Carey Mulligan in Dior at ‘Gatsby’ Cannes premiere: the loveliest she’s ever looked?

Here are the photos from the big opening night of the Cannes Film Festival, the premiere of The Great Gatsby. I actually had pretty low expectations for everyone at this premiere – I was preparing myself for a major let-down, but I was pleasantly surprised. Sure, there were some celebrities phoning it in (Cough Isla Fisher cough), but Carey Mulligan led the pack in this Dior gown. It is really balls-out amazing. I would have expected this pale pink (-ish) color to wash her out, but it really doesn’t. There’s a touch of Audrey Hepburn in Carey, I swear.

I’m including some other lovely ladies below. Here’s Isla Fisher, blending in with the red carpet in this super-ruffled Oscar de la Renta. That’s unfortunate because this is a detailed dress and the details are just lost because of the color.

Solange Knowles looks kind of badass in this Stéphane Rolland Fall 2012.

Julianne Moore in Dior. OMG. NOOOOO. I love Julianne but NO.

Cindy Crawford in Roberto Cavalli. Eh. She looks like a game-show hostess.

Cara Delevingne in Burberry. I like the dress… but I think it would look more interesting on Rosie Huntington-Whiteley rather than this chick.

    impeccable!

  2. Anna says:

I have zero love for anyone in this post/slideshow. Carey – yes, ok, I might say this is ONE OF the best looks we’ve ever seen on her, but that’s not a high bar to pass. To me the overall look is ‘ingenue society bride about to marry an influential industrialist 25 years her senior’. The dress itself looks so heavy, at least in photos, that it comes across as stiff rather than structured/sculpted (what I believe was the intended effect).

  3. Hubbahun says:

Julianne’s shows make my pinkie toes scream in pain!!

    • Azurea says:

Yeah, didn’t she check her feet in those shoes before choosing them? Ridiculous!

    • Onasan says:

LOL!! I didn’t even notice, it’s like they’re trying to escape out that side of the sandal. OUCH

Out of these, the look I like the most is the Delavigne girl, although I don’t care much for her personally.

I have to agree with the commenter above in that Cara’s dress looks quite stiff and not very well fitted…

  4. ds says:

Carey looks so lovely. A bit too skinny for her, but delicate and… it’s a good look.

  5. bns says:

    Carey looks really old here.

    • jinni says:

She always looks old and the white blonde hair isn’t helping her look any younger. She’s like Angela Lansbury (in her youth) , they both just have a jowly looking jawline and aged before their time features. It’s weird.

      • Kate says:

Have you seen pictures of her mother? Exact same face & that jawline is seriously going to age so terribly.

      • Mims says:

@Kate – I just googled her mother, doesn’t paint a pretty picture for her future, unfortunately

      • TG says:

I was noticing the same thing about Solange isn’t she younger than Beyonce? She looks a good 10 years older than Bey.

      • jinni says:

@Kate: Well I see she gets it from her mama. Poor thing.

      • jinni says:

@TG: Yes, Solange is Beyonce’s younger sister. I guess some people just have old faces no matter what their age.

      • Apples says:

I had a dream that she already had a facelift to fix those jowls.

      • sasa says:

Where are you guys seeing jowls? I’m not seeing them.

      • Well... says:

If she gained some weight back you would see them.

She’s adorable. She just has a round face and knows that Hollywood doesn’t prefer that as much.

      • Lauren says:

@jinni you’re so right about some people having older faces no matter what age. I have such an old face ever since I was a baby and the youngest of all my sisters people always thought I was one of the older ones haha.

      • catt says:

I agree she always looks wan and pale and full of ennui like its an effort to walk and talk. She has zero charisma. The comment about her and Angela Lansbury is dead on. And I do not get all the It Girl stuff about her. She is so unattractive and sullen and her acting matches her blandness perfectly. I just don’t get it.

  6. Enzo says:

Carey = very Elle Fanning here

  7. Dutchy says:

    These men are so HOT

  8. gee says:

She is channeling Goop circa Oscar win. Also, Isla looks amazing.

  9. Sisi says:

Carey’s dress looks like it needs to be ironed at the stitches. I don’t like it. (dunno how to say this properly in English :/)

  10. Shade says:

Carey’s hair and make-up is lovely. I can’t tell where Isla’s dress ends and the red carpet begins.

  11. jellybird says:

I would like to have a conversation about DiCaprio’s beard.
The substance of the conversation: DO NOT LIKE.

    • Hakura says:

+1 – I’m not a facial hair person, almost *ever*. It’s not ‘God-awful’ on Leo, but not attractive to me. (Plus it ages him quite a bit).

  12. Eleonor says:

    Julianne Moore feets what’s wrong???

    • Janet says:

Her shoes are about a size and a half too small.

      • Justsayin9 says:

Um….I think they may be too big. Doesn’t it look like there is an extra inch or 2 of shoe behind her heel? I cannot believe she wore shoes that her pinkies were squeezed out of! Lol! Too narrow.

  13. Gabby says:

    http://www.yournextshoes.com/2013/05/julianne-moore-toes-cannes/

Julianne’s poor toes looking all twisted in those shoes. I don’t relish the thought of what her feet must have felt like after this night was over.

    • blannie says:

Too funny!!! What a way to start my day – looking at Julianne Moore’s toes!

  14. Andrea says:

Yes I think this is the best that Carey has ever looked. She looks like Daisy here….lost. That’s not a bad thing for the character.

Isla is a pretty woman. I didn’t think her performance, limited as it was, in Gatsby was that great.

  15. Kate says:

I think this is the best she’s ever looked mainly because her make-up has never been better.

  16. 2000 says:

I think the dress totally washes her out. Her hair, her skin and the pale dress… almost looks like she is sick. Even that red lipstick can`t help. To me she was just as boring as ever. This girl can and should wear color and she needs some darker hair or at least some lowlights.

    • Nerd Alert says:

Agreed, she looks totally washed out in that color. The hair color has got to go.

    • lbeees says:

Agree–exactly what I was thinking. Her hair color is too light & flattened, the lipstick doesn’t match her hair or the dress color.

The dress color is slightly light, but it could have worked if she had darker hair and a different shade of lipstick.

  17. Agnes says:

Carey looks a little bit washed out

  18. mary says:

Mulligan looks so miserable. even a smirk would be better than her face…maybe she’s cold? lol

    • Lexi says:

This girl is always so po’faced in public. Such a turnoff.

      • Nerd Alert says:

She probably listens to too much Mumford and Sons.

      • Itsjustblanche. says:

I dont know what po’faced is but somehow it fits. 🙂

      • EmmaStoneWannabe says:

I think she would be happier, after all being newly married to the M&S lead singer.. I find him very attractive. I would be smiling ear to ear all them time if I were her.

  19. Mel says:

She looks bored and bland. Eh.

  20. KAS says:

Her feet, ah! This makes me so uncomfortable just looking at the photo, shudder!

  21. gloaming says:

Tobey Maguire has his hand on Carey’s ass and looks quite pleased about it.

    • Itsjustblanche. says:

      Yeah. I wondered about that.

    • I Choose Me says:

I kept scrolling down wondering if anybody else noticed and would mention it. Maybe he doesn’t realize exactly where his hand is placed?

      • EmmaStoneWannabe says:

Yeah right. A man with his hand on an attractive, young woman’s a$$… he knows exactly where his hand is placed lol.

  22. judd says:

Carey has been looking miserable since the Shia LaDouche debacle.

  23. SusieQ2 says:

Carey looks like a cross between Goop and Elle Fanning.

I don’t get why Isla Fisher is a thing.

Julianne Moore is very disappointing and those shoes look like they’re torturing her toes.

    Meh all round.

  24. Mrs.Darcy says:

I just wish Carey M. would smile, just once. She always looks distant and wan/full of ennui. It’s so HARD being a movie star, yawn. I keep trying to like her, but think her Daisy is going to be a snooze. And sorry I know the Redford film was boring but he was so beautiful, we have to make do with old Leo bloatface as Gatsby? Blah.

    • Chrissy says:

I have to agree. The Redford movie was tragically terrible but…Robert Redford > Leo. Although, it is nice to see Leo looking pretty since Titanic/Romeo + Juliet.

  25. serena says:

Wow, I’m surprised by Carey too. She looks amazing and at the same time super cute and precious. Total win for her.

  26. Jm says:

Carey should not be that blond. Not cute.

  27. Miss M says:

The only thing I have to say is that I noticed how much of a team player Leo has been for the great Gatsby. I don’t recall him playing this nice to promote a film. I guess he changed his strategy. Oh, just to add one more thing, he was amazing as Gatsby.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

Since there is a very slight Leo Lovefest going on here I thought I’d chime in with this:

      http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/05/14/entertainment-us-art-auction-environment-idUSBRE94906320130514

Say what you want about his dating habits, but the man does some serious good for wildlife and the environment. Can’t help but respect him for that.

      • j.eyre says:

I have been kind of indifferent to him in the past. I don’t really care if a guy wants to be a modelizer unless I want to date him. I suppose I should be more aware as to whether he is a misogynist.

I have always found his activism admirable (thank you for the article, OKitt)

I thought he was brilliant in Gilbert Grape and have found his talent to permeate throughout many of his films.

However, after seeing Gatsby yesterday – he is going to have to drown a kitten to get himself off my H!t L!st. He may have even earned a lifetime placement. I think they all went on the list – Carey, Tobey, Joel, Jason, Isla, Elizabeth, Amitabh…

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

Yeah it’s how I feel too, J. Eyre.

Similar to how I feel about Clooney’s dating style-doesn’t make me respect him more but doesn’t make me hate him either.
I feel like both those guys’ reputations are pretty well-known so I don’t think any model who dates them is going into things blindly. And I agree that Leo is undoubtedly a very talented actor.

I was going to boycott Gatsby on principal but now I might have to see it. It’s that good huh?

      • Miss M says:

@j.eyre: I am glad you mentioned his role as “Gilbert Grape”. I love that movie. Let’s be honest, aside from his dating habits the man is consistent in picking good projects and delivering it so well.

@Theoriginalkitten: I’d like to give some credit to Gisele. He started getting more involved with environmental causes when he was with her (and I believe due to her involvement). If I remember well, He went to Brazil and visited indigenous tribes a few times while dating her, etc.

      • j.eyre says:

OKitt – I have a drs appt but come back in 2 hours and I will give you my opinion on going to the movie.

      • Then... says:

he hopped on a private plane to fly to France.

      • j.eyre says:

@Then – did he really? ha, well – there your go.

@OKitt – I am not sure if you should go or not because I don’t know why you are boycotting it. I have a strong emotional connection to the book. I saw the Redford film and thought it was fine b/c I was 17 and Robert Redford has always, and will always, make my heart flutter. When I heard they were remaking this, I was going to boycott it as well. The casting infuriated me, save for Tobey who basically is Nick in my opinion.

When I saw the first trailer, my view changed and I have been eagerly anticipating the film ever since. As I started the trailer, I scoffed and thought “what the he… ” and about then it was as if my eyes opened into the world I had always seen for Gatsby.

So that is how I went into it. For me – and I accept possibly me alone – this movie embodied how I saw the book. The characters were spot on, the opulence, the metaphors – everything came across as I had seen it. Whereas the Redford movie told the story, stripping it down to just the story of Gatsby, this movie reaches out and grabs all the elements that made The Great Gatsby an experience beyond just the story.

But I recognize, this is all just how I saw it. If someone told me they did not like it and why, I would be fine with that. I do not feel the need to defend the movie. It was everything I needed and no amount of criticism will change my view. But my emotion will not change a critics view either.

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

@ Miss M: “I would like to give some credit to Gisele..” This is the only time you will ever read that phrase around here. I didn’t know she had an influence on his philanthropic interests but that’s great. She’s married to TB, so I’m always looking for a reason to like her 😉

@ J eyre- The Fitzgerald book is one of my all-time favorites and I adored the original movie, which I’ve watched so many times that I can recite each character’s lines. I’m also, admittedly, not a huge Luhrmann fan. While I respect greatly what he does, his style of direction isn’t my favorite-it just doesn’t really resonate with me the way some directorial styles do. I wasn’t bowled over by the trailers for the remake but I thought the casting choices were interesting. You make it sound really appealing though…maybe I’ll catch a matinee this weekend. Did you see it in the 3D?

      • j.eyre says:

No, I m no a big 3D fan so I saw it just regular.

  28. kiki says:

Carey is beautiful. Yes, she looks a bit like a gorgeous ghost, but I love it! I think the look is ballsy.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

I think she looks STUNNING. I hate how there can’t be one post about her without an angry mob gathering to bag on her looks. If you want to criticize her fashion, fine, but people are unbelievably harsh on her for the face that she was born with. A face that I find to be pretty in an unusual way.

    • EmmaStoneWannabe says:

Agree. It’s refreshingly different..the pale skin and lack of botox/overall try-hardness is like a breath of fresh air in HWood these days. I like this look on her very much!

    • Adrien says:

Love her too. The blonde hair does not suit her though. She looks like a pale Jennie Garth.

  29. Hakura says:

Carey’s dress ‘texture'(& color) reminds me of frosting on wedding cakes. It’s too pale. The blonde is too bright, & flat. There’s no depth or warmth to it, to showcase her beautiful skin. Same goes for her makeup. The red lipstick is too distracting, when she hasn’t done anything (color wise) w/the rest of her makeup to balance it.

I think a very delicate necklace would’ve looked nice. Just a small, classy little sparkle.

Re: Cindy Crawford – “She looks like a game-show hostess.

Looks more like one of the girls who’d turn around the letters, or stand next to the prizes, on ‘The Price Is Right’. She’s a beautiful woman w/a great body, I just don’t think this one does anything for her.

—-I’m probably sounding like ‘fashion police’ today, or too critical, but eh. Just one of those days, I guess.—

  30. Deb says:

Cary looks awful. The terrible hair, ugh ugh ugh. That dress is too pale for her. All I can see are the overpowering red lips. Bad bad look for her.

  31. Dedrie says:

Carey always looks like a sad deprived child or fearful kidnap victim.

    • Cam S says:

@Dedrie: YES! Thank you, this is gonna be my favorite post today. Sums up her expression wonderfully. She doesn’t smile because her smile is atrocious. No, seriously- it’s awful.

    • Hakura says:

@Dedrie – I hadn’t really paid it any attention before now, but you’re absolutely right-on with the comparison. Such an odd expression.

  32. Dhavynia says:

Julianne Moore is a beautiful woman and she grts styled so badly! I think the last time she look good was when she wore that green dress at the Oscars

we all know Posh’s reason for not smiling so what’s Carey’s?

I don’t think there will be much of a difference between Cara and Rosie wearing this dress

  33. StormsMama says:

It looks like Tobey has his hand ON her butt. Seems a bit…unnecessary.

  34. moon says:

Carey’s dress is beautiful but the colour washes her out.

  35. Chrissie says:

Carrie looks so sad lately – hope everything is ok with in her personal life – I really like her!

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

You know, my mom never really smiled much in photos because she was always self-conscious about how much her gums show.

I think the constant criticism that Carey gets has just made her so self-conscious that she doesn’t smile naturally. I don’t think she’s sad per se.

    • EmmaStoneWannabe says:

If she is not loving being Marcus Mumford’s new bride I will gladly take him off her hands!!

  36. Scarlett says:

Monochromatic except for the red lipstick. It’s a strange look. Everything sort of blends together..the hair color, her coloring, her muted makeup and the color of the dress.

  37. Kelly says:

Cindy Crawford’s dress is terrible. There was some other actress, younger, that had a similar dress in red. Blah – tacky.

Carey looked good, don’t know great.

Nicole Kidman and Frieda Pinto nailed it.

    • BooBooLaRue says:

Spot on Kelly! Did I miss something? Why was Cindy C. there in the first place?

  38. Scarlett says:

They all look very uncomfortable here.

  39. Glaughy says:

I love Carey’s dress. Super glamorous and I dont think it washes her out at all. I also love Isla’s. And Leo looks so dapper. Lovely all around!

  40. Cam S says:

Carey’s hair extensions look like something I would have churned out when I was in cosmetology school and charged clients $25 because we were still learning. Just sayin…

  41. Isabella says:

    Tobey’s hand is a bit low on Carey’s body…
Leo doesn’t do it for me :-/

Aww poor Moore, her little toes are stickin out like a cat’s would.

  42. Jackie Jormp Jomp (formerly Zelda) says:

It’s very late 90’s bridesmaid. Underwhelmed.

  43. Sabah says:

Solange, bravo. She is so fearless in her fashion choices and always works it. Showstopper in this dress!!!

  44. mel says:

Carey looks really pretty…but a little sullen.

The rest…just no. Cindy Crawford looks absolutely awful…we are the same age and it frightens me how scary she looks.

    I liked the Burberry dress.

    • Itsjustblanche. says:

Se here. I hope I don’t look that hagged out. Still beautiful but HARD looking.

  45. Chrissy says:

    I spoke too soon.

Carey did NOT disappoint. She looks like a goddess! She looks like Daisy!

p.s. It’s pleasing to note that Leo is taller than Carey with heels. His bloated sidewards face always gave the impression that he was a short man.

  46. roxy750 says:

Carey looks so like the young Jenny Garth! She looks beautiful, Leo looks handsome, Tobey looks great and Isla is gorgeous!

  47. Ally says:

I have to disagree. Carey is wearing a bridesmaid dress, w/ a lower neckline. A darker color would look better. She also looks hungry and unhappy. If I were standing with those guys, I’d have the biggest donkey girl scout grin on my face. Would it kill her to smile?

  48. Elle says:

How did Tobey Maguire manage to look cooler than Leo and Joel? He clearly has minimal f*cks to give for the hoopla and it’s actually working in his favor in these pics. Nice.

    • Elle says:

Also, is his hand sort of…resting on/across Carey’s ass? Maybe that explains the expressions on both of their faces, actually.

  49. ramie says:

Wow…everyone is so harsh! I think she looks great! I’m loving the longer hair & the sad distant look in her eyes. Very cool.

  50. Lex says:

She sat through the whole opening ceremony thing with a face like a smacked arse – she couldn’t have looked more miserable…
Has this girl recently experienced some trauma or is she just perma-sad?

    • Lane says:

      What? Were you there!?

      • Lex says:

Hhaha no – I live in France and they played the opening ceremony thing on tv. It was only 45 mins or so but every single time they flashed to her (there were only a few *stars* there so they had to keep showing the same ones), she looked painfully sad

  51. mkyarwood says:

From the front, she looks great, but white always highlights where the dress is cut too tight for, say, ribs. I think she should go dark blonde, and soon. Also, she’s looking like she was on the actual 20’s diet (laxatives, coffee, piece of toast) and this could be the key to her miserable face :/ We watched Pride and Prejudice last night. She always steals the show for me at the end.

  52. Gal says:

Carey is beautiful but she needs to to smile. She’s married to a HOTTIE and being photographed with all these hottie’s…what gives?

  53. Lulu.T.O. says:

She does have an ethereal quality to her, and this look makes the most of it.

  54. Tiffany says:

I cannot believe I am typing this, but I believe that Carey is pregnant.

    • Me says:

Yep. So do I. I saw her in a dress earlier this week and I was like, “that girl is so preggo, it’s not even funny.”

  55. A Fan says:

That hideous fake blonde hair coupled with brown eyes ruins everything good about her.

That combination is beyond awful – and not just on her.

  56. Dorky says:

Again. Looks like Paltrow. Even wearing the pink Oscar dress. lol

  57. vegemite says:

Carey Mulligan is the new Goop-plain faced, sullen and over-rated.Lacks chemistry with Leo too.
I like Solange, this is the best I have seen her look but the poor thing has a man face.
    Isla Fisher is lovely!
