Chloe Sevigny shades Gwyneth’s Met hissy: ‘Maybe her sleeves were too tight’

Did you see Chloe Sevigny on The Mindy Project? Chloe was on for a few episodes and she was surprisingly great. I remember when she was on Will & Grace too – Chloe is a surprisingly deft comedienne if she’s given strong writing, and on TMP, they gave her funny lines and she had really sweet chemistry with Chris Messina (she was playing Messina’s ex-wife). Anyway, Chloe is still a thing (yay!) and she still gets acting AND modeling gigs. She’s the current face of Absolut Elyx vodka, and Vulture asked her about her appearance at the Met Gala and about Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop-hissy about how awful the Gala was this year (pity we couldn’t get Chloe’s comments on Gwyneth’s “I was literally a transvestite” quote). Chloe’s reaction was priceless:

Last night, Chloë Sevigny hosted an event for Absolut Elyx vodka, whose ad campaign she currently fronts. In the spirit of flowing liquor, the Cut asked if she’d ever given a drunk interview, à la Gwyneth Paltrow last week. “I always say something I wish I hadn’t, almost every time I interview, so I generally try not to drink too much at press events,” she said.

As for Paltrow’s recent Met Gala tirade, she could sympathize: “Maybe her sleeves were too tight. If you’re in a dress where you can’t breathe, then you’re not comfortable. I found that out the hard way after going five or six times. It’s more important to be really comfortable in your dress. That was a big thing with Proenza Schouler, they made my dress this year. I said, ‘I have to be able to lift my arms and move them around.’”

“I think it depends on what table you’re at, and who you’re with, and obviously your attitude. But it’s a lot of hoopla over not a lot. Everybody thinks it’s so much pressure, and you do the carpet and it’s such a big deal, and it’s just a museum fund-raiser, you know? But you have to wear comfortable shoes and an outfit you can be okay in.”

[From NY Magazine]

Is this shade or sympathy? I think it’s shade wrapped in faux sympathy. I think this was the equivalent of Chloe saying, “Oh, poor little thing, you’re so uncomfortable and you’re whining about something that really doesn’t matter.” LaineyGossip covered this yesterday and she said that Chloe and Goop have never clashed before, but a long time ago, Chloe shaded Gwyneth HARD. It made such an impression on me, I went and dug up the old magazine. It was in a 2001 Harper’s Bazaar interview, and Chloe’s shade was even more perfect than “maybe her sleeves were too tight.” Behold:

“I used to be really addicted to the fashion magazines,” Sevigny says with a weary tone, “and I think I’m pretty schooled as far as the designers go, but I don’t study fashion. I don’t think it’s worth studying…”

“Fashion is just there.” She’s sipping dry white wine and smoking Parliaments, both in steady succession.

“Carolyn Bessette always looked so elegant – and like Gwyneth Paltrow wishes,” Sevigny continues. “Carolyn Bessette always looked so clean and, like, not forced. I mean, it wasn’t as if she was wearing Calvin Klein – she was wearing Yohji Yamamamoto and offbeat things, but she looked amazing in them.”

“She was so consistent, whereas Gwyneth will one day look this way and the next day look completely different.” She laughs – which comes as a kind of shock. It sounds like a blender on a high speed. “Actually I really feel for Gwyneth,” she says, “because how much pressure does she have to look good every time she goes out… they’re going to rip her apart if she looks bad and they’re gonna rip her apart if she looks good.”

[From Harper’s Bazaar, print edition, May 2001]

Now THAT is some beautiful shade right there. There’s just so much pity and contempt. Poor Gwyneth wishes she could look as beautiful as the late Carolyn Bessette. Poor Gwyneth feels so much pressure. Poor Gwyneth should be more consistent. Sorry, I just loved that interview and I’ve always wanted to use those quotes!

“She WISHES!” OMG this is some amazing, Valley-Girl celeb shade! Love this so much!

    • V4Real says:

Ha ha and ha ha again. Gwyn just got served with a scope of shade Chloe style.

    • Nev says:

      WORD.

and just like that Chloe has eclipsed GOOP as the baddest fashion bitch on da block!!!!

  2. brin says:

Brilliant…shade with a big side eye!

  3. Miss so and so says:

This poor GIRL? I am not sure… she is a bit … homely.

  4. k says:

Damn celebs who say real people things are so refreshing. When did it all become so fake and sound bitey?

    Chloe rocks.

  5. tracking says:

I’ve always found Sevigny to be off-putting–arrogant and cold–but she does have an impressive self-confidence and wit that Goop lacks.

  6. Faye says:

Ha ha! I love a good Hollywood shading. That was so nicely done, too, wrapped up as sympathy.

I love that quote from 2001 even more, because it’s just so true. Gwyneth really has been striving to be that WASP-y icon her whole life (among other things).

I wonder if something happened between these two way back? Inquiring minds want to know.

    • Apples says:

As an Interior Designer I’m pretty familiar with the stars that have published images of their homes. Chloe Sevigny has (surprisingly given her hipster vibe) very much fashioned her home/s in a WASPY style. This makes me think she IS shading Paltrow. Sevigny is probably jealous of her fame, $$$, and that illustrious Oscar that they ALL want. Yes, every single actor wants an Oscar no matter what they claim.

      • Tasha says:

I highly doubt it. if Chloe whated to be jealous of someone with fame, Oscar and money their are many other acters out thier for her to be jealous of.

      • Talie says:

People forget Chloe is a pretty celebrated actor, she works a lot and has been nominated for an Oscar in addition to winning a GG.

      • Apples says:

To your point- that would make Sevigny even MORE annoyed (jealous, petty, whatever your word choice) that Paltrow has achieved so much, with such seeming ease and quite possibly less talent. The 2001 quote was a LOT funnier/more shade thrown, and Paltrow was a really big deal then whether you want to admit it or not. Now, she’s not so much- her star is a lot more tarnished. But, in 2001 she had already won an Oscar, Golden Globe, and two SAG awards. I’m sure you’re right, though, Sevigny wasn’t trying to take her down a peg, at all.

      • FLORC says:

Chloe has been around for a long time. She doesn’t often take generic roles. You’ll see her more in something that the average actor can’t pull off. I think she was on W&G because that was an “edgy” show for the time. She really is a phenomenal actor. Her style is crazy, but there is structure in her chaotic style and she’s consistent.

A lot of people don’t like how she dresses and don’t want to see her in some roles she takes because both can be hard to watch, but she pulls it off. Nobody can accuse her of being fake and I think that’s what she’s doing the Gwyneth in a very shady, well-spoken way. She’s such a delightful b!tc#.

      • squeakie says:

If chloe wanted a mainstream career she probably could have had one but instead she has taken the time to select interesting projects and not gone the typical fame whore route. I highly doubt she is “jealous” of Gweneth. Chloe is right, Gwyneth never does seem to get her personal style right like remember that goth disaster she wore in the height of her career? That pink dress she wore to the met gala is coming in at a close second..

      • Emily says:

I think she just despises and pities Goop, as all right-thinking people do. She likely had just had a big dose of Goopiness from somewhere or other.

      • Apples says:

What is this confusion? Chloe Sevigny is a very good actress- not amazing. I know she throws some good shade but, people are fronting like she’s Meryl Streep and simply chosen a more low key career to appease her eclectic tastes.
No, the acting profession is rough and she’s basically had to compromise and spend years on the small screen by her own admission for the steady paychecks and work.
Chloe has talked about the things she would like to do someday to her home, budget permitting, that she couldn’t afford to do immediately. All while Paltrow is out collecting 10 million dollar homes and taking years off (at the height of her fame) to raise her kids- the ultimate luxury.

      • Eh says:

Chloe grew up in ‘gold coast’ Darien, Connecticut. That uptight prepster style is in her blood every bit as much as GP — more, more like. She’s had acclaim since Larry Clark/’Kids.’ She’s starred in more culturally significant projects, between that and ‘Boys Don’t Cry’ alone, and has guts and/or crazy commitment, depending on how one regards ‘The Brown Bunny.’ She’s worked with the people everyone wants to work with – David Fincher to Louis CK/Mindy Kaling. I don’t think she was shading out of jealousy.

The comparison, style-wise, to Bessette and finding Paltrow lacking, is painful because it’s frigging astute as hell. Before GP married, she was trying to bang the future king of Spain and the Heinz heir — ‘American Princess’ was and remains her thing, and CBK married the one man in this country that was regarded as ‘America’s Prince.’ I don’t suggest that GP envied CPK, but she certainly modeled herself style-wise after her in some significant ways.

      • anon33 says:

I’m sorry but there is no way IN HELL that CHLOE SEVIGNY is “jealous” of Gwyneth Paltrow for all the reasons people have stated above. So, you found support for that statement by…looking at some pictures in a magazine? Okay…

  7. gloaming says:

Chloe should come here. She’d fit right in.

  8. Micki says:

I can’t help but enjoy her bitchiness

  9. poppy says:

good times, hating on Goop back when she was being called a “funky angel come to earth and maybe get in some shopping at agnes b” (some such nonsense) and the whole media blitz by miramax trying to make her the new grace kelly. all she could do back then was complain about every mention of her always including her boyfriend and parents! goop was always tacky, ungrateful, and stupid.

lainey seemed to have forgotten all about this priceless diss.

  10. lisa says:

what’s on her head? did they give facials at that met gala?

    • poppy says:

      lol.
it came full circle; the bazaar article has chloe wearing a black turban/babushka/scarf on her head in the 2001 interview.

  11. Lulu.T.O. says:

Ah Carolyn Bessette. She was an ethereal gazelle, that woman. And yes, I can see where Gwyneth is striving for that kind of physical perfection.

    • Talie says:

Now that I read this, I can totally see Chloe’s point, Gwyneth did copy Carolyn’s look in the 90s.

  12. Bren says:

    Oh snap! Well played Chloe.

  13. Lindsey says:

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAA

    that is all

  14. Adrien says:

Chloe mentioning Proenza Schouler reminds me of the ‘Chloe Sevigny’ Toast skit: “have a conversation about Fassbinder, irony, or Proenza Schouler.”
Everything she said about Caroline Bessette Kennedy was spot on. Caroline was effortless.

  15. Talie says:

Movie stars used to shade really good back before the Internet blew up and everyone had to be accountable.

  16. Deb says:

Ooo what a subtle shade throw by Chole LOL. Love her. And agree with her comments about Carolyn Bessette who always looked effortlessly chic.

  17. Gwen says:

I love Chloe! Perfect and spot on comments on Goop 😀

  18. annaloo. says:

Chloe is absolutely right about that tryhard plate-face Gwyneth!

  19. kiki says:

    I find this very entertaining.
But Chloe comes across as jealous. Goopy is a movie start (whether we like her or not) while Sevigny is not much more than a former fashion girl.

    • Tasha says:

I don’t see it coming off as jealousy. Goop been bitching about everything from her dress and her makeup to the Met. No one made her wear that dress or forced her to go to the Met and if she didn’t like her makeup she should have said somthing to the makeup people.

All Chole is really saying is suck it up its not that big of a deal and remeber this is a fundraiser.

    • FLORC says:

      Kiki
It’s being well stated on this thread (after you posted your comment) that Chloe is just as privileged as Goop. She also took very interesting roles that Goop could not take because it was either out of her skill level or too risky. Chloe can never be accused of being fake. What she says is what she means to say. It’s refreshing. And maybe Goop will love o make this into a war so she can be associated with Chloe. Gwyneth did sugary movies for the most part and worked with a revolving door of different face/same actor. Chloe for taking risky roles has worked with some truly amazing talent that Gwyneth would sell Apple to get a connection with.

    • cupcake says:

Why does she have to be pinned as jealous if she “hates” on Gwennie? Not everyone that says something negative about someone else is jealous.. Just saying.

  20. Dave says:

+1 to her for ripping GOOP, but I can’t understand how she could be a model. She is some kind of ugly.

    • MsAubra says:

Modeling I walwas thought was moreso about your height, body and “serve” factor, not so much if you were pretty so to speak! I think the “prety” models went out with the 90s

      • Amy Tennant says:

For a long time now, I think it’s been more important to have a unique or striking look in modeling than just conventional prettiness.

    • Faye says:

Well if Gwyneth could be The Most Beautiful Woman . . .

And actually, Chloe never called her ugly. She was more poking fun at her self-stylings.

    • Amy Tennant says:

Didn’t know she modeled until I read this article. She’s primarily known as an actress, I think.
I can see how Chloe is not as conventionally pretty as some. She has her own “look,” and I kind of like it. Some her style choices would be howlers on anyone else, but her presence makes it work.
I cringe on her behalf for “The Brown Bunny,” though. Girlfriend suffers for her art.

  21. c'est la vie says:

That is some beautiful shade there…

  22. LadyL says:

Chloe can really show her WASPY Greenwich, CT roots when called upon. You go girl!!!
And, I don’t think she’s a bit arrogant. She’s just not fawning and obvious. Love her.

  23. Truthful says:

Love Chloe ad would like to see her more, she keeps it all the way real.

Poor Droopy Goopy, just can’t get it right-that horrid dress AGAIN, heehee.

  24. dvz says:

Although not a WASP herself, Chloe was raised in Darien, CT. This chick knows the WASP lifestyle well. She also doesn’t suffer fools. While Gwinnie may have WASP pretensions,(among so many, many other pretensions)she’s about as WASP as one of my toenail clippings.

  25. oce says:

Bringing up the dead? Seriously?! Come on…

  26. shanaynay says:

thank god some celebrities are finally responding to Goops shenanigans! can more come out and put her in her place?!

  27. Bucky says:

I disliked Chloe for so long, for reasons I can’t remember, but damn if this isn’t some redeeming shit. Between The Mindy Project and perfect Gwyneth shade, she’s becoming a favorite.

Also, about a year ago in New York, I almost ran smack into her because I was playing with my phone and not paying attention. Even though I was at fault, she stepped out of my way and said “Sorry.” I was like, holy shit, I was just accidentally totally rude to Chloe Sevigny.

  28. m says:

Chloe seems cool. Not in a Goop try hard way, but legitimately cool way. I like her. Its funny, the first time I saw her was in American Physco. I dont think she has aged a day since, its hard to believe that she is 38!

  29. Shelly says:

Love Chloe. Always have, always will.

  30. Ag says:

    MUAHAHAHA!

  31. Calcifer says:

What a great, subtle way of telling Gwyneth to SIT DOWN for a minute! Apart from that, I think she was really right when she compared Gwyneth’s style unfavorably to Carolyn Bessette’s style. Gwyneth seems to always be only about wearing the newest and flashiest stuff. I almost never seem to see her wearing some item of clothing more than once. Someone like Kate Moss, on the other hand, seems to have a real personal liking for some (in fact most of) of the clothes she wears. Which means that she will wear them again, combining them with other pieces of clothing (which shows that she really pays attention to these pieces of clothing and is creative with them). Carolyn Bessette was also like that, though to a lesser extent. Gwyneth just seems to want to wear the newest. There is something curiously sterile about that and I imagine her to smell unpleasantly of NEW clothes all the time.

  32. marie says:

    ha, masterful

  33. Glaughy says:

I love Chloe. I wish she was my in real life friend.

  34. taxi says:

Chloe’s style does not appeal to me. I much prefer Gwyneth’s fashion choices & think she carries them off well. Carolyn Bessette, sans make-up or wardrobe, was very drab & unexpressive, a blank. Unnoticeable in a crowd except by her extreme pallor or unless she was next to John, whose charisma glowed like an internal halo.

  35. RHONYC says:

i used worked in Calvin Klein’s building on 39th St in the early 90s
    and lemma tell ya…that Carolyn?

    was one B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L chick.

like so effortless and brezzy it was RIDIC! mind you this was b4 the marriage to John-John and the media scrutiny that made her waste away. she was not bony, but svelte yet soft.

i remember how HOARDS of chicks tried to bite her style when she became famous & Goopy obviously has become one.

it would be nice if she stop ‘D’-ridin’ other peoples style & develop something more authentic for herself. 🙄

    • Calcifer says:

Wonderful to hear that Carolyn was beautiful not only in pictures, but also in reality!

I think that she kept her style understated on purpose after she married John Kennedy Jr., because she didn’t really want to be too ‘visible’, strange as that may sound because she was in the spotlights all the time of course. Her unique style shone through anyway, in the great choices she made (Yohji Yamamoto!). But what I really loved about her was her casual style, it was so ‘low try’ and yet so chic.

  36. Calcifer says:

By the way, Jessica at ‘Go Fug Yourself’ once described Gwyneth’s style – when out in public at special occasions – perfectly (back in 2008):

‘No one can find exquisite, expensive, super-high fashion clothing that almost succeeds, yet still brings with it a strong stench of total wackadoo the way Gwyneth does.’

Gwyneth looks best in jeans/good pants and a great blazer I think, and luckily she can be seen in that once in a while.

  37. Hmm says:

It doesn’t matter how harmless something someone says in writing is. You can’t see their expression or body language so you’ll always think they’re being sarcastic/bitchy/shady/whatever.

  38. Alipop says:

looks like Chloe had her nose tweeked a little…

  39. F5 says:

She should fire her stylist.. Or mirror.

  40. skuddles says:

You gotta love Chloe for having the cajones to appear almost completely makeup free on the red carpet. She’s wacky and and has rather terrifying fashion sense but I can’t help but admire her 🙂

  41. Agnetha says:

Chloe is awesome, this just made me love her even more!

  42. Well, risking a lashing here….. Preface: never got the Paltrow appeal. Still don’t understand why she brings appeal to the table and even more so, how she conjures so much animosity. Chloe is or was, in my tiny, culture handicapped but man do I try, mind, on a different (read-better) level than Paltrow, who had the text book beat example of a nepotism Hollywood cotillion.
For her to actually dedicate a respectable and obviously defining portion of her interview to randomly throw “shade” (which I savor as much as anyone), lets me down and gives me sads. Why Chloe? Why Celebitchy? Love this site!

  43. Denise says:

Gwyneth is an easy target. Since we’re all saying what we think of Chloe, good or bad, I’ve got a weird one. When I first saw her in Kids in the 90s I loved her look. But I got this sense that she just smells bad, all the time and I still get that from her. Weird I know, but it’s so persistent, nearly 20 years later I can still smell something whenever I see a photo of her face. WTF I know.

  44. Dick says:

Somebody PLEASE get RuPaul’s response to Goop’s transvestite slam. Me thinks she back handed Ru because Jinkx Monsoon, RPDR Season 5 winner and better actor/comedian times a million, shaded Goop to US Magazine with “[Gwyneth] always looks like she’s about to cry…somebody should kick her…” LOL!

  45. Quinn says:

Hoppy seems like a friend I had in highschool who ALWAYS claimed never to study, but got straight A’s. She always acted scared before tests, swearing she didn’t study. One day her mother told me this chick stayed up ALL night studying sometimes. This is the kind of person Goop is…someone who claims not to try, but tries soooooo hard.
