Here are some photos from last night’s IFP and Calvin Klein party at the Cannes Film Festival. I feel like this used to be a bigger event…? Although I could be mistaking it for one of the other big fashion events that happen every year at Cannes. Anyway, all of the ladies we’ll discuss wore Calvin Klein, obviously, to this event. To varying degrees of success. Let’s start with Nicole Kidman in this Fall 2013 look – it’s interesting to see her in black leather, and even when Nicole doesn’t look completely amazing, she’s still interesting to look at. I think the full skirt is throwing me off here – this would seem more “Kidman” if it was a straight pencil skirt. Also: I want Nicole to go back to a darker red for her hair. This blondish shade is wrong.
Carey Mulligan wore a pretty straight-forward strapless LBD. I’m not sure if this was supposed to be a bustier and she’s just too small or whatever. It’s cute, but now I want her to wear her hair down more often.
Rooney Mara is too aloof to wear an actual color. Rooney wants to be washed out. She is not your Fashion Girl!! (Even though she’s at a fashion event at one of the biggest fashion-friendly film festivals ever.)
I like Naomie Harris so much and I think she’s gorgeous but OMG she should not wear cut-out dresses. Maybe it’s been too long since I was truly skinny (if I ever was truly skinny), but I feel like Naomie’s rib cage is especially pronounced and it’s kind of… too much. Or too little, shall we say.

Oh, God yeah, that face it’s getting frightening. The dress is fab but I can’t seem to be able to tune out how awful that face is looking. Just stop Nicole, stop!

I agree about the hair, but I think there is not much she can do without using extensions because her hair is so thin (I can relate). It’s nice that she’s not resorting to the extensions though – maybe they were too hard on the hair she has left.
Not feeling it with Nicole’s look this time. The black is too stark,and the leather is too harsh. Poor girl’s eyes are bloodshot again – too much contact lens wearing at Cannes is catching up with her.
I can’t help but wonder if she tokes a bit before appearances to help relax her. She struggles with panic disorder.

It’s cause she can’t blink, everything is pulled so tight. I know it was 25 years ago but dead calm and days if thunder hair was amazing, she owned red and curly, gorgeous. I wish she’d quit the fountain of youth routine (whos she kidding?) and go gracefully she’s a beautiful woman.
I hate it when she flat irons the hell out her hair. She has really murdered what was once her crowning glory. I just don’t get it.
I am honestly, truly puzzled by this as well.
Although I don’t agree with all her injections and procedures, I can almost see where she would do them to keep pace with Hollywood’s ideal of youth.
But her hair, when it was darker red and curly, was flat out gorgeous. She has never had a hair style or color since then that looked half as good.
I agree with both of you. I keep waiting for her just once to wear her hair in its naturally curly state. It’s beautiful! Just once Nicole, just once!! Bring back your natural beauty!
Agree about her natural texture looking better. I think she would look younger. Products have come a long way since the 1990s. I would imagine her natural curls would look fabulous and not frizzy.
I think black is too harsh for her. And her crazy eyes are back.
Her other Cannes looks have been so much nicer.
Love the dress, the Kidman in it, though…no. The hair, the makeup, the botox…

Not unflattering, her body is flawless, and the fit is great, but the leather is wearing her a bit. I don’t know, it’s ok, but it could be so much better. It’s so so.

She looks fine and so much better than others. But leather looks better on harder looking people than on soft naturally pretty people like Nicole.
She is better as Grace Kelly. She does not have the Angelina type edge or attitude to carry this off.
And the bloodless, depressed vampire is back with Mulligan. People who are as skinny as Harris should not wear that kind of dress. It looks horrid.
Her smile in the third picture just…weird…almost joker-like. She’s looking the best in the dress that she wore during the opening of the Festival.
Rooney Mara just seems so affected. Would it kill her to look up at the camera? To me, her demeanor says she is terribly bored and just trying to endure it.
I see her as less affected and more awkward. She doesn’t bug me as much as she seems to but many others. I haven’t seen her act other than in The Social Network but I love her style and fashion sense.
I don’t mind the dress on NK. I think the skirt might have been picked up by the wind in the first because in the next it looks pleated and not very full. Not a home run for me (I don’t love leather dresses in general), but it’s not bad. I would also like to see her with darker hair, a la Moulin Rouge. She was GORGEOUS in that movie.
Kidmans’ face is now as stiff as her acting.

Well, the word on the street is that she’s a stuck-up b*tch (I’ve obviously never met her, just heard this multiple places), so that might have something to do with it. But she always looks more sad than b*itchy to me-like she’s always on the verge of bursting into tears.
All three dresses are ugly and that last one makes her body look deformed with those bones sticking out!
Whatever is under those cutouts looks crazy. What are they? Ribs?

Scoliosis (or whatever) severe enough to require spinal surgery would explain the oddly shaped ribcage.
But I couldn’t find any confirmation when I tried to google it.
Working on your assumption – which sounds viable – isn’t it kind of wonderful that she is putting herself out there like this? I think she is beautiful and I get hung up looking at her face but she is showing her scars and a ribcage that is not the same as all the other Hollywood actresses with confidence in who she is and what she is made of.

The length on all of the dresses looks really good. But the girl whose ribs are showing….oh no, please cover that up.
Naomie Harris would’ve been perfection if it weren’t for that upper body cutout. I mean, the woman is ripped – look at those arms! But the ribcage is totally distracting and creepy.
I really want to be her BFF and make her talk to me in her Tia Dalma voice all the time.
Adding: I really hate that Rooney Mara is a decent actress because it makes me feel bad for hating on her. I always want to smack that smug look off her face. I do not understand why she bothers me so much!
What’s with this trend of no accessories? They look all kind of blah and naked without nothing but a dress plus a very light make up -carey and rooney- . Meh.
Anyway Nicole’s face is looking crazy again. I don’t know how nobody tells her she’s scary with that kind of face..and those lips ughhhh.
I like that this is something different for her. Nic’s face looks…different? though, and not in a good way. But here’s what stumps me: her forehead is scrunched in pix #3. You cannot do that with Botox, which would knock down a lot of conventional wisdom we’ve had about Nic’s face recently. So…is it fillers then? That’s what I am inclined to believe.

You are spot on with the hair comment. Her hair needs to be a deeper shade of red. Anything to distract us from the mess she has made of her face. She used to be so beautiful. I think she still could be if she would just lay off of the botox. How can she look at herself in the mirror and think she looks good. I would take wrinkles any day over that face. Diane Lane has wrinkles and she is gorgeous.
I think it’s similar to body dysmorphia – these women literally do not see what we see and think they look better with the fillers & surgery. But I agree with you. She used to be unique looking. Now she looks cookie cutter, fake and terrible.
Love Nic’s dress! I just like her, period. She dresses great 99% of the time, fabulous body! Naomie’s dress? Not so much… She looks emaciated.

Really love all 3 dresses. Kidman’s face is so sad but dress is cool. Mara is cute, she’s clearly not a poseur but does not look smug at all as someone said. Harris is gorgeous but scary abs.

The stray strand of Nicole’s hair is irritating and I also hate it when her hair is too flat. Leather dresses are hard to pull off. I think the pattern is fine but the material should be changed. Rooney’s dress is really boring, she should embrace her edgy face and really work her fashion. Yes, I know some of you think she’s boring but I really adore her high fashion face.
Kidman looks like a coquettish, red eyeballed nightmare in that 3rd pic! Someone needs to tell her she hit the expiry date on “cutesy” years ago.

Nicole Kidman ALWAYS looks baked.
It looks like there is a lighter fabric sewn into the lower skirt – it’s not all leather. The fit is incredible and she is lovely.Her facial expression in the third photo is kind of off but damn…at least she is smiling! The younger actresses look so dour and ordinary.
There is no one at Cannes this year to make you want to keep track.
I like Nicole’s dress, but not on her. As others have mentioned there are a few women that can work leather and Nicole is not one in this instance… her hair is what bothers me. It is so thin and damaged. She use to have the most beautiful hair. And that blond/red color is wrong. I wish she would go darker.
Naomie is thin, but I have seen very thin women who don’t have ribs sticking out that way. not sure if she is sucking in or if there is some other problem.
The other two look just so meh. No personality is the root cause.
