Zoe Saldana vs. Marion Cotillard at Cannes premiere: who looked cuter?

Here are some photos from last night’s Cannes Film Festival premiere of Blood Ties, Guillaume Canet’s new English-only (?) film. The film stars Mila Kunis, Clive Owen, Marion Cotillard, Zoe Saldana and many more. Unfortunately, Mila Kunis did not come to Cannes, and I have NO idea why. I just saw some photos of Mila and Ashton in London, so it’s not like it would have been crazy travel time. Anyway, let’s start with Zoe Saldana in this Valentino gown. I feel like… this could have been more striking if only the designer had made some more interesting edits. I’m not flat-out opposed to the grey-blue fabric, I just think it would have looked prettier… maybe as a strapless ball gown? Those white straps make it seem like Zoe was wearing a shell underneath her gown.

Here’s Marion Cotillard in Dior. It’s just… ugh. Marion loves a mullet dress. She loves to wear ugly, unconventional pieces and style them in unusual ways. Is this the worst thing ever? No. It’s not. But it’s also disappointing because she’s so beautiful and I would love to see her dress impeccably. This dress looks sloppy (but the styling is fab).

Milla Jovovich (she’s not in the film) was there. She wore Chanel. Again, not the best but not the worst.

Aishwarya Rai in an intricate gown by Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla. The beading and button-front feel very Indian to me, and it’s very beautiful. I would have styled it with her hair back, though. With the hair down, everything just seems so heavy.

Bonus Clive Owen! Mm.

Marion Cotillard, hands down. I read the description of the mullet dress before the picture came up and thought it was going to be monstrous, but for a mullet dress, it’s not that bad.
Zoe looks like my Grandma on her way to Church.

  2. Mew says:

    Zoe is really beautiful.

  3. T.Fanty says:

I actually disagree @Amelia. I LOVE the delicacy of the fabric on Zoe’s dress, and the straps are a fun contrast. I would wear that in a heartbeat. The Marion Cotillard dress is fine, but a little basic.

Zoe’s dress is pretty but I think I would like it better if it were shorter.

    • MisJes says:

      I agree T.Fanty, I absolutely love it.

    • Liv says:

I somehow really like Zoe’s dress! Maybe it’s because she has a great stylist and can pull “special” dresses off.

I don’t have words for Marion. What is Dior doing to her? The dress looks horrible. And her hair is awful as well. She’s unbelievable beautiful and it takes a lot to make her look horrible like this.

    • Amelia says:

It’s the pattern that really put me off; it reminds me a little of damask wallpaper. The skirt of the dress looks quite big for Zoe, she’s so tiny, maybe the tulle (?) could have been shortened a bit.
I think my eyes are too unsophisticated to appreciate the finesse of the dress, maybe that’s why I’m loving the electric blue stripe on Marion’s!

Zoe´s dress is like a Monet, beautiful from far, the closer you get not so much.

    • BooBooLaRue says:

Love Zoe’s dress! I think if I were to change it, I’d make the straps black. Mullet dress? Basic at best, horrible mostly.

  4. LL says:

Marion Cotillard dress and hair is terrible. To go along with that, I think Dior (now) is terrible.

I was looking at old vintage Dior, it was like night and day to the clothing now. Majority of Dior outfits/dresses now are either boring or ugly.

  5. Toot says:

Zoe looks really good, hair and dress.

As for Marion, hate her hair and the dress is so so. I like the top, but then I saw the bottom.

    • E says:

Ugh. What a horrible comment and borderline racist, and no, I do not have dark skin. This is the best I’ve seen her look and it has nothing to do with her skin color.

  6. poppy says:

    the white straps, NO

  7. Shelley says:

Zoe looks amazing. I love the dress on her. Not many people would have pulled it off.
Marion in that dress is a big no no..and the bouffant hair -_______-??! Maybe she ought to try a tootheir smile.

  8. j.eyre says:

I love Marion’s dress except for the asymmetrical hemline but that is a personal preference – the soft fabric has a nice effect on it.

I thought Zoe was wearing something under her dress too. I don’t hate it but would have preferred something of less contrast. I love the fabric and color.

Mila’s dress looked like Anna Wintours from the Met Gala.

  9. Jane says:

If Marion is going to have “50s” style hair, she should wear the same old school style dress. Her dress is too modern. Dior also seems to have the same top styling to all their dresses–Lawrence wears the same style over and over. They should have some variation.

Don’t like the white straps on Zoe’s dress, but otherwise, pretty. Still no overall Cannes style stars though, most of the fashion has been rather blah with weird hair.

  10. Guesto says:

Marian Cotillard hands down, no competition. She’s a beautiful, graceful, stylish throw-back to when Cannes was about real glamour. Just stunning.

  11. Gwen says:

I think Marion looks amazing. Zoe looks like she sucked a lemon and I don’t think the dress works.

  12. Micki says:

I’d wear Marion’s dress in a heartbeat if I could. The rest is not interesting.

  13. Anna says:

I am almost always Team Zoe over Team Marion, and Team Valentino over Team Dior Under RS, but Marion completely wins this one for me, hands down, due to impeccable styling and that distracting white afterthought on the Valentino dress.

  14. stellalovejoydiver says:

I love that Marion is experimenting occasionally and she has the sophistication to pull it off.

  15. pretty says:

is her concept a conehead here?

  16. moon says:

Aishwarya looks like she’d done work on her face.

  17. lisa says:

it looks like zoe is wearing an amazing dress over a tank top. plus i dont really think her face is very cute. the bottom half is too angular or something.

    marion is super pretty.

i dont mila or aishwarya’s dresses either

  18. MAC says:

    Marion.

  19. sal says:

Ugh. Zoe Saldana looks so old.

  20. CosmicGirl says:

I’ve never seen Zoe wears anything that would be flattering to her, and this one is no exception.

  21. StaCat1 says:

WHY WHY WHY do we always have to pit two women in what they wear? Her VERSUS HER….I mean, really??

How very US Weekly of you….

  22. Bea Carter says:

I like both, but Marion wins! She looks amazing!! I LOVE the dress and the hair.

  23. F5 says:

    Both fug.
There, I fixed it for you.
