Carey Mulligan in a Nina Ricci bustier at Sydney premiere: lovely or tacky?

Here are some photos from the Australian premiere of The Great Gatsby last night (?) in Sydney. Leonardo DiCaprio was not there, obviously. Is that weird? Baz Luhrman is Australian. Joel Edgerton is Aussie too. My point? Australians should be and are proud of Baz and his Hollywood success. But doesn’t it feel like Leonardo DiCaprio thumbed his nose at Australia by refusing to fly to Sydney to promote the film? He was supposed to, but he canceled at the last minute, citing a “schedule change”. Perhaps Leo was still trying to get Cara Delevingne into bed? Whatever the “schedule change,” Leo has been living it up in Cannes. He’s the King of Cannes. Which is sort of like saying he’s this year’s King of the Douchebags.

Anyway, since we don’t have Leo to look at, let’s discuss Carey Mulligan’s outfit. She wore this Nina Ricci bustier which is just… odd. I never think of Carey as one of those young actresses who needs to or wants to show a lot of skin, so this bustier is a surprising choice for her, right? And it doesn’t “look expensive” either – she looks like she’s wearing some cheap Vicky’s Secret knockoff. I hate the pants too. So what do I love? Her hair. I love when she wears her hair down, and I love this shade of blonde she’s working. It’s a good blonde.

Here are some photos of Tobey Maguire and Joel Edgerton (and who I am assuming is Joel’s wife Alexis Blake). I can’t help it, I think Joel is The Hotness. I want to see him in more movies.

I think Carey looks good here. She’s flat chested enough that it’s not tacky. The fit seems just a little off, but overall I like it.

Baz Lurhman actually doesn’t get a whole lot of love in Australia. And a lot of big celebs don’t make the trip down here and just leave it to the supporting cast, so there’s nothing unusual about Leo skipping it to bang models in Cannes.

Leo was scheduled to be at the Sydney premiere ( I saw the article about it months ago ) but he cancelled like 4-5 days before the event. He said scheduling changes and then Buz said ‘personal issues’ were the reason for his absence. I guess it’s tough to decide which party to go to instead if your own premiere.

  2. Micki says:

Unremarkable outfit, doesn’t do anything for her.

  3. mkyarwood says:

Leo’s too busy macking on models in his Kangol hat from the 90’s.

  4. Amelia says:

Is it raining? What’s up with Joel’s jacket?

    • Jane says:

Yep it was raining – there are funny photos in some other places of all the stars with umbrellas

  5. Elly says:

    she´s a sleeping pill

    • RocketMerry says:

Oh, but she’s so cute and has such sweet face features… maybe that’s why she comes across as boring to some; she has a quiet personality, which I love and find refreshing.

  6. Rose says:

My god, is it just raining at every premier lately or what? Cannes, London, now Oz!

    • VioletCrumble says:

Well, it’s almost winter here, so rain is to be expected. If only it had been held the day before, cuz it hadn’t rained in weeks.

  7. bns says:

She looks weird with long hair.

  8. GoodCapon says:

The bustier looks cheap and poorly-made. Her pants and shoes though are lovely!

Who is that statuesque blonde beside Carey?

And where the **** is Jason Clarke?!!!

  9. Dee says:

Mulligan is so dull and bland, she leaves absolutely no impression of having a personality. I don’t dislike her but I haven’t learned enough about her to find her interesting.

I also find her looks very bland. I don’t know if it’s just me but there’s something about her mouth area and the way her upper lip is pulled down (the space between her nose and upper lip is slightly longer than normal) that gives her face the appearance of a pinched turtle. At least she’s not trying for the ingenue look that Michelle Williams seem to be hawking.

    • Cam S says:

@ Dee: I fell in love with your post. My thoughts exactly about Mulligan AND Williams

    • Anmelt says:

You express my feelings about those two actresses so well, spot on!

    • Isla says:

+1,000. Nothing more to add since you’ve expressed my exact thoughts to a tee about both Carey and Michelle.

    • MisJes says:

+1, Dee! The way people carry on about them, you’d think they were actually interesting.

  10. Official Bitch says:

Alexis is beauuuuutiful. She is the dark-skinned woman – farking stunning. Carey is FUG. All around. She always looks like she is about to burst into tears. I want to slap her face.

  11. Eugenia says:

Geez, has Carey worn anything that wasn’t black and white the whole time while in Cannes? That trend officially died at this festival.

  12. Cam S says:

Just want to say there should be a caution warning before a picture of Carey Mulligan’s face pops up. It almost pains me to look at it, she looks so… strained. Like, girl needs a proper bowel movement! Yup, I know its snarky of me. Sorry, not sorry

    • Asiyah says:

I think she’s not a fan of the “hollywood” side of acting. She always seems uncomfortable at premieres, events, etc. I know I’d look strained too if I were in her shoes!

      • Cam S says:

Ah, I see. Good point. Perhaps she should do plays or stage theatre? Plenty of options for actresses other than Hollywood blockbusters

    • Asiyah says:

      @Cam S

      Agreed!

  13. Jennykins says:

Carey mulligan always looks like she’s in the middle of a depressive episode. Like she’s downtrodden and beaten. Even when she smiles it looks like she is just about to cry. Girl needs a hug, or happy pills or a good roll on the hay or a sandwich. Something.

  14. Addison says:

Oh Wow! Who is that giant on the group picture? I can’t look past that.

    • my .02 says:

Movie people are short. That woman (don’t know who she is) is probably 6’1″ and everyone else is probably under 5’10” which is supposed to be average height for a man.

I have a friend whose daughter is a great actress, but I wonder what’s going to happen when she gets out of school and goes on auditions – she’s 6’2″ and there’s no way she’s going to get roles when it seems like all the men in acting are under 5’10”. Nobody wants to see a woman towering over a man – it distracts visually. It’s a shame, too, because she’s really good at acting.

    • xxx says:

That is Elizabeth Debicki who plays Jordan Baker in the film. Apparently she is fantastic in it! She is Australian too. Apparently she is only 5’11” but the rest of them are midgets so she looks about 7 feet tall!

    • Ally8 says:

I had to know, too! “Who’s that giant girl?” It’s Elizabeth Debicki who plays Jordan in the movie. She must have played every scene with her knees half-bent to make it work with Dopey Maguire.

  15. Dedrie says:

Carey looks like.. Help me.. I rather desire to be in roofless shack, on a remote mountaintop in the middle of nowhere, shivering, hungry, lost and bewildered, and absorbing that dark and lonely night, as frightening thunderstorm strikes.. just me.. morbidly grateful for the personal suffering.. but weeping and lamenting for all the lost thundering sonic shock waves sounds in the world I shall miss..

  16. JC says:

Facially, I just find her so unremarkable. She always looks like a little old lady.

  17. serena says:

She looks cute, but not enough elegant. I’d love to see her with more eyeliner or eyeshadow too..

  18. I Choose Me says:

Why does it look like Tobey is copping a feel on Carey, again?

*tinfoil hat on* I’m probably reaching but could there be a little hanky-panky going on between those two?

  19. lrm says:

oh my gosh, i actually LOVE her pants. and she somehow makes that bustier work, even though intuitively, the color should wash her out, with her pale skin and the even paler hair shade [which, i agree with you, does work on her, oddly].
She looks great, also love the hair down and there’s something interesting and pretty/lovely about her look and features. Not conventionally beautiful, and she has a bit of an icy, affected persona, but she is beautiful to me. I think she will be like kate blanchett; she’ll become iconic both for fashion and her personal style, and for her acting talent. CM carries herself with a similar grace and dignity that KB does….my two cents….though KB seems infinitely warmer and unsnobby.

  20. lylaooo says:

    she seems so boring!

  21. ichsi says:

    Alexis is GORGEOUS! WoW!

  22. rtms says:

She looks young and great with her hair down. Anytime she has it up or in a bun etc it makes her look old and frail, like she’s going to topple over. And this shade of blond looks better than the platinum she had in Cannes.

  23. gg says:

Red lippy is not her friend, nor is severe style. She needs to go boho feminine or she looks awkward and her delicate beauty is mowed over.

  24. Angelica says:

I might be the only one who thinks this, but she looks to me like if Britney Spears and Bonnie Hunt had a baby together. (Giggles)…

  25. xxx says:

I actually think Carey looked about 1000x better as a brunette a la An Education. Blonde hair washes her out and that combined with her perma-frown makes her look like a little, sad ghost.

  26. raincoaster says:

Carey always looks like she’s a college student hauled in for a shoplifing mugshot.

  27. VioletCrumble says:

Leo not showing up is no bother to Aussies. If he’d rather be elsewhere than his own premiere and trying to get into someone’s pants, then we’d rather not have him.

Joel is a really wonderful actor and just a super bloke. Love you always, Joel!
