If recent pop-cultural history has shown anything at all, it’s that ladies love Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Tommy Solomon has not only grown up good but also appears so grateful and enthusiastic about his success and even looks good while pumping gas. Now JGL appears in a new feature film, Don Jon (formerly titled Don Jon’s Addictions), that functions as his writing and directing debut. Last year, Kaiser covered some meathead set photos where Joe looked a little too orange for my liking. Honestly, he looked like the ultimate “Jersey Shore” reject, which is saying something considering that I willingly watched every episode of that dumb show.
But now there’s a trailer for the Don Jon movie, which was a hit at Sundance and was immediately picked up for global distribution, and the trailer is unavoidably charismatic. Kaiser, CB, and myself were all gushing over how surprisingly sweet this trailer appears. The words “cute” and “adorable” came to pass more than once. The trailer itself is a wee bit NSFW, but watch it, and you’ll probably like it too:
See, this movie co-stars Tony Danza JGL’s dad! Julianne Moore is in there too. Essentially, this is a very sweert rom-com with a pr0ny twist. That is, the titular Don Jon is obsessed with (as the trailer suggests) a few things, which include pr0n. Then he falls in love with Scarlett Johansson’s character, who adores cheesy romantic comedies just like Don Jon harbors a weakness for pr0n.
ScarJo does an excellent Joisey accent here (seriously, that’s some very effective gum smacking) and finally embraces her own sexuality (which she has steadfastly buried under wraps for the past few years) as an actress even though her character honestly doesn’t understand why Don Jon continues to watch his pr0n even though he has her. The premise sounds awful, I know, but the trailer says otherwise. The movie also stars Channing Tatum and Anne Hathaway in a movie-within-a-movie. It’s going to be a total sleeper and an unexpectedly great date movie, I just know it.

Wow who knew ScarJo had it in her. That’s the most alive I think I’ve ever seen her on film.
Julianne Moore is in it, but I think that’s Glenne Headley as his mother. Always great to see her too.
I agree. I think this is the first time I actually thought Scarlett could act.

I absolutely loved the trailer but is it just me or ScarJo really CANNOT act? I am not even mean-girling her… doesnt she have an Oscar nomination? And I liked her well enough in Vicky Christina Barcelona. But here she is just so wooden – and her accent is atrocious.
She doesn’t have an Oscar nom (as far as I know…) but I’m fairly certain she’s got a few Tony noms under her belt.

I tend to go back and forth between Scarlett, but at the moment I quite enjoy watching her. She’s generally quite funny and interesting to watch.
She is good on stage…the infamous “What is the victory of a cat on a hot tin roof…” scene is on youtube and she’s really good. I was amazed. Maybe she’s trying to work harder in her films now.
I’m from Jersey so I think I’m a pretty good judge when I say her accent and attitude are pretty spot on.

The trailer looks good! Looking forward to this movie. Scar’s a pretty bad actress, but it’s nice to see her finally get a role outside of the avengers. She seems to be losing out on auditions for the big films over the past couple of years.
Except she’s not really a “big film” actress. The Avengers and Iron Man 2 are really the only mainstream film in recent years I remember her doing. She mostly does those limited art house releases or theater.

I guess I’m one of the few who have absolutely loved Scarlett ever since Lost in Translation. If she’s a bad actress I’ve never noticed it. Add in the effin’ sexy as hell JGL and Julianne Moore and helllll yes i’m going to see this. Trailer looks awesome.

I’m definitely Team Scarlett and find her to be a decent actress. She has a specific style of acting which works for the characters she plays. It’s not really all that different from Jennifer Lawrence’s monotonish style of acting.

OMG the “Good Vibration” singing/rapping was hilarious! Reminds me of when Michael Bolton was rapping on Office Space. JGL is adorable and sexy wrapped in talent. Love him!

It’s interesting how you say the premise of the movie “sounds awful” but “the trailer says otherwise.” You should know better than to judge a movie from its trailer.
I’m interested in how they recut it (if they even did) to try and sell this as some standard, “sweet” rom com. The buzz at the festival when this came out was that it was a depressing, misogynistic mess, and they speculated whether it would even get picked up (as if that was ever a concern with JGL associated with it).
It will be interesting to see how it looks in the commercial release.
After just watching that rubbish The Millers trailer, *THIS* movie here looks good! Definitely will be checking this out. And even though I’m not a ScarJo fan, even she looks OK in this.
This trailer has pushed me full throttle into having a huge ladyboner for JGL. I think its the guido act.
