Henry Cavill covers Details, looks awesome, talks about his ‘amazing’ girlfriend

Henry Cavill covers the June/July issue of Details and OMG, this is a beautiful shoot. Usually, I dislike the boringness of a men’s magazine photographing a male celebrity – they put the celebrity in a suit and put him against a blah background. But for Henry, he just seems to pop, right? At worst, he’s beautiful in a vanilla way. At best, he’s “throw me on the bed and just have your way with me” beautiful. I can’t find the Details interview on the Details site, but Henry has a really well-organized fan-site and they have the whole interview, which you can read here. I learned something new: his last name is supposed to be pronounced to rhyme with “travel”. Did not know that. Here are some highlights:

Amy Adams on Henry: “It takes a second to adjust, because Henry’s just so good-looking. He’s dashing with just a hint of danger, and it’s kinda great. It’s super-hidden. But you know there’s a steeliness within him that makes the gentlemanly qualities all the more interesting.”

Henry lives half the time in LA with Gina Carano: When not in London, Cavill makes his home here with his girlfriend. Her name, he says, “is Gina,” which comes out in a way that suggests he doesn’t want to answer any more questions about his girlfriend. “She’s amazing,” he says. “Gina” is known to everyone else as Gina Carano, the MMA fighter turned actress who is also conveniently rumored to be the next Wonder Woman. Cavill has chosen to walk up the street, leaving the car at home. “I’m not much of a schmoozer,” he says, “not much of an eventgoer. I’d rather stay close to here. This doesn’t feel like L.A. It doesn’t feel like work.”

Testing for James Bond: “I screen-tested for James Bond when l was 22,” he says. “But Daniel [Craig] was above and beyond the best choice.”

He loves Robert Jordan’s fantasy series Wheel Of Time: “The books are about the rise of a chosen one with great powers. I’d stay up until five, six in the morning reading. I couldn’t put them down.”

His youth, being homesick at boarding school: “I was fat,” he says. “I was Fat Cavill.” At boarding school, Cavill was prone to homesickness. “I bawled on the phone to my mom four times a day. I became an easy target.” Being Fat Cavill didn’t exactly boost the boy’s self-esteem, but it did help him form early understanding of his breakout character’s inner life. “My version of Superman,” he says, “is essentially of a guy who has spent his whole life alone.”

Finding out he was cast as Superman: “When I found out I got the part. I was home playing World of Warcraft. Zack called, and I thought he was calling to let me down easy. But then it dawned on me that he was giving me the part. I had to play it cool. Be appreciative, respectful, professional. But the second we hung up, I just sprinted up and down my stairs cheering and whooping like a madman. I kept looking in the mirror, going, ‘I don’t believe it. I’m Superman? I’m Superman!’”

His family: Cavill credits his early and unlikely confidence to his parents. “They taught me to believe in myself,” he says. “And as much as there were times where I really didn’t, you muscle through. You end up believing in yourself even more.” It’s also worth noting that Colin and Marianne Cavill, parents to five boys, are actually in the business of raising sons who look and act like heroes. Cavill’s oldest brother, Piers, spent a decade as an officer in the British Army. Nick, the second-oldest, is a highly decorated Royal Marine, having served in Sierra Leone and Iraq and as an infantry commander in Afghanistan.

Bulking up for Superman, then slimming down: “I’m not eating 5,000 calories a day anymore,” he says. He’s also cut back on the grueling Tabata workout methods employed by his trainer, Mark Twight, the record-breaking speed… Aside from his caloric intake, Cavill, showing both respect for trade secrets and a reasonable fear of Internet trolls, refuses to divulge any additional numbers. “I will say I was a lot bigger as Superman. A lot bigger. I’m not saying how much. It’s modesty about the weight — I’ve always been worried about my weight — but I also don’t want to invite that debate: Henry weighs this, so he’s the perfect Superman. Or, Henry doesn’t weigh this, and therefore he’s not believable in the role.”

He’s not afraid to watch his movies: “The hardest part of acting,” Cavill says, “is not being guaranteed work. Every job could be your last… But I cannot wait for this movie to come out. The studio just showed me the completed cut. I literally asked to watch it twice in a row. I’m so excited. I just want to show it to the world.”

The mythology and symbolism of Superman: “This character matters so much to so many people,” Cavill says. “I want to get that right. I want to do it justice. I want people to believe in the character and have faith in the character and kids to grow up wanting to be Superman. Or, God forbid, there’s people who are going through hardship and wishing that this character would turn up and save them.”

[From Details via Cavill’s fan-site]

I should note that the Details interview took place on the same day as the Boston Marathon Bombing – the beginning of the interview was normal and then as Henry and the interviewer were eating lunch, they stopped talking and just began watching the footage from the bombing. That’s why Henry’s last quote seems so bittersweet, about how the Superman character means so much to people and you can tell he was close to saying some cliché (but true) line about how first-responders are the true superheroes.

As for the discussion on Henry’s weight… I’m so glad he’s not giving numbers and making it into some huge deal, like Anne Hathaway’s “I won’t tell you what I did to lose weight, oh yes I will and I will keep talking about it until I win my Oscar” stuff.

Yowza…Gandy Tuesday and Cavill Wednesday…can’t wait til (Fassy?)Friday!

  2. Amelia says:

    I just . . . gah, I just don’t get it.
I see that he’s classically handsome, I see that he’s got a great body but for the life of me I can’t get enthusiastic about him. My biscuit isn’t returning his calls. Which doesn’t make a lot of sense.
Maybe he’s too pretty? Maybe he’s too perfect. I’m not saying he’s flawless, because there isn’t a person on the planet who is, but I haven’t seen any visible spark from him, or snark for that matter. Just vanilla-flavoured, diplomatic sound bites.
Also, I don’t think I’ve ever heard this dude’s voice. He only ever seems to exist in pictures, but to be fair, I haven’t seen the Man of Steel trailer yet.

    • LadyMTL says:

I know what you mean, and I feel the same way. He’s a gorgeous man and I normally flip out over the darker hair – lighter eyes combo but there’s something about him that leaves me shrugging my shoulders.

Maybe it’s because it’s a picture and not an interview? When I saw him on a talk show (can’t remember if it was Leno or Letterman) he was sweet and charming and THEN he was hot. If you haven’t seen him “live” then Google it now, it’ll definitely get the tingles going. 🙂

      • V4Real says:

I’m like you; I perfer the dark type. I like dark hair with brown or light eyes. I should be all over this man like a cheap Sunday suit but he is just not doing it for me.

He’s handsome but not pretty boy handsome. If you notice his nose is a little uneven and usually I would find that sexy, the way I did with Clive Owens.

Henry does nothing for my girlie parts and yes I saw The Tudors as some suggested. He didn’t do it for me in that series either. I’m hoping Man of Steele might change my mind. That movie better not suck. We saw what Superman Returns did to Brandon Routh career.

    • marie says:

I am totally with you, I get the he’s attractive but he does nothing for me.

And I have seen the Man of Steel trailer and can’t remember his voice. (I was only half paying attention though)

    • MisJes says:

You all need to go out and get yourself The Tudors, particularly Season 1 and 2. IMMEDIATELY!

      • Natasha says:

Yes, do it!!!!!!!! He is sexxxxy in the tudors…gaaahh

      • Chicagogurl says:

Yes. He’s so much more handsome when he smiles and has a beard. He has a swagger which is really attractive.

      • BW says:

Agreed! He’s hot with an English accent.

I’m not sure I can see him as Superman. It’s sort of like how I cannot watch House, because I keep seeing Hugh Laurie with an English accent as Bertie Wooster or on Blackadder.

    • OhDear says:

Maybe because it doesn’t seem genuine? Everything in this interview seems…calculated. Not that I don’t believe that he was bullied and has nerdy interests, but many of the people who are looking forward to this movie have had difficulties fitting in and have nerdy interests. And the usual “he used to be so private and now he’s talking about his personal life” comment. Hoping for the best for him, but it’s disappointing.

      • Andrea says:

He is calculated right now and it doesn’t suit him. It’s a shame really that we force these guys to play this game. Wish he could just be himself. His PR team is suffocating right now.

      • Lauli says:

I agree with you, this is PR stuff, not a genuine interview.

      • Gabby says:

        That’s because HE IS GAY.

  3. GoldenState says:

God, this guy is all sorts of hot. And I kind of love how he has the hots for a former MMA fighter. He seems kind of great, right?

  4. TheyPromisedMeBeer says:

HA! I knew I was pronouncing his last name right! I win that bet at work!

Anyways, he is starting to grow on me again. That is all.

  5. Mirella says:

Dear lawd that man is beautiful.

  6. mkyarwood says:

He’s a reader, sigh. And I like his blandness in comparison to everyone else’s ‘look at me’. And I like his girlfriend. They can both come over.

    • loveisthecoal says:

He was doing nothing at all for me until I found out he’s a Robert Jordan fan. Now he’s looking a little more appealing!

  7. Mel says:

    He’s super purty…

I really like that he was playing WoW when he got the call. Makes him seem strangely normal.

    • Natasha says:

I read an interview with him in this month’s Instyle where he called himself a big geek. He said that he locked himself in his room and played Skyrim for 20 hours straight (pre-girlfriend). It made me like him even more because, like you said, it makes him seem more normal. Plus he’s beautiful. He can lock himself in my room and play whatever he wants for 20 hours 😉

  8. Gwen says:

He’s getting less and less vanilla IMO and I love it 😀 I SO hope Man of Steel will work out well for him *crosses fingers*

  9. Spooks says:

He seems so nice. I’m kind of warming up to him.

  10. Deb says:

He has me from The Tudors. Drooling for Man of Steel.

    • Natasha says:

Ditto time a million…loved him on the Tudors

    • TQB says:

THISTHISTHIS. So happy to see him getting bigger roles. He’s gorgeous and charming. But it’s going to be weird to hear him with an American accent!!!

  11. Vee says:

I adore this guy. He is honestly kind and humble. He works hard and is grateful. I cant wait for Superman!

  12. aims says:

it’s my man!! I’ve loved him since the Tudors, now I’m little apprehensive. With all this exposure, he will no longer be my dirty little secret. And yes, He does look like he can take care of business 😉

  13. BC says:

He seems really grounded, I hope the success in the next month doesn’t change that. It can’t be easy with all these crazy fans out there. For instance, I am a 50 year old, wife, mom and full time career gal and cannot stop thinking about him, talk about stalker….what is wrong with me? Hopefully someone else out there is just as addicted and I am not alone living in a fantasy world! Good lord!

  14. The Original Mia says:

I love him. Cannot wait for Man of Steel. He really seems to adore Gina. That’s great. Wishing him all the success.

    • Andrea says:

Yes the PR campaign really wants you to think he adores Gina just like they want to hide that she started those rumors about WW herself. Don’t be fooled.

      • The Original Mia says:

I don’t care if you think this is PR push. I don’t care if you think he’s gay. I don’t care what you feel or don’t feel about Gina & Wonder Woman. I don’t care. Move on.

      • Lauli says:

Please, don’t move on Andrea. You’re totally right.

    • Gabby says:

I’m sure they are very good friends.

    • Ximena says:

Again with the gay thing??? that’s boring!!! I don’t like Gina (and the created rumors about wonder woman) but why should I invent a story about being gay? O_O He’s great!
      I support Henry 100%

  15. GoodCapon says:

I’m not a fan of the mouth wide open stance but that chest hair!! HOT DAMN!

  16. GeeMoney says:

This man is fine… but is too pretty for me. Kind of like Brad Pitt.

I tend to be more drawn to the smart, funny looking guys with enormous talent (aka Cumberbatch). But I won’t deny that Cavill is very nice to look at.

  17. Vee says:

On a side note; I truly do not understand boarding schools, which I know is a British tradition. My son is 16 and everyday I get in some great teaching and bonding moments with him. I cannot imagine missing those.
My heart breaks for the 14 year old fat Cavill who was homesick.

    • Amelia says:

Boarding school really isn’t that common here anymore, usually it’s the private/independent schools that have boarding facilities but even then you can still attend as a day pupil (like I did).
From what I can ascertain, Henry grew up in Jersey, and generally you need quite a lot of money to live there (it’s a tax haven so often you’re quickly priced out when buying property there). This is pure speculation on my part, but I’m guessing Henry may have come from ‘old money’, where tradition still lives on. I think his father was a banker or stockbroker though, so like I said, I’m speculating.
Anyway, it may have just been purely for the sake of his education; Jersey is miniscule, and I had quite a few friends at my school who came from the Channel Islands but boarded because their parents wanted to send them to a higher quality school.
I boarded for about 6 months when I was twelve due to issues when we moved house, it’s actually quite fun if you’ve got a decent house master/mistress 🙂

    • j.eyre says:

Vee, I hear what you are saying and I felt the same way until my niece went to a boarding school for high school. There are a lot of pros to it.

  18. Tig says:

Saw the trailer- and just didn’t work for me. I was more excited seeing Kevin Costner! I think I just loved him so much in “The Tudors”-everything now is so bland. Did see where he’s to be on “Tonight Show” next Thurs, so will try to check that out.

On a side note- saw where he’s been tapped to replace Tom Cruise in Man from UNCLE- not excited about another re-tread, but can see Henry C in this more than Superman- and also loving that Arnie Hammer is in it as well!

    • pat says:

He seems like a nice man and I wish him well. He is obviously attractive and fits the role but he is DULLLLLL.
I hate the vanilla, safe approach the studios take to everything.

He just isn’t my idea of interesting or sexy.

  19. Samtha says:

Love him and how he’s a secret (or not so secret anymore) nerd.

Wonder what realm he plays WoW on…

  20. moon says:

My question is.. does Gina know she’s a beard? Or are they keeping her in the dark?

    • Lauli says:

      Lol

The real problem is not that he is in the closet (without Gina) but that he can not act.

    • Andrea says:

Gina has her own agenda. She wants to play Wonder Woman. She wants fame. Those “rumors” about Carano being WW were started by HER camp and this is one way she is campaigning. This is common knowledge. Don’t let her fool you.

These two are not a couple. They make like each other very much but this is no coincidence. This was arranged to help her career and help her campaign and to make sure he appears straight when Superman comes out.

It’s hilarious that people are fooled by this.

    • Gabby says:

      She knows.

This is one of the more obvious bearding relationships in Hollywood and the fact that “savvy” gossips like Lainey and Celebitchy are shipping them as real should tell us something.

      • Lila says:

Co-sign. This bearding is pathetic. And it’s not the first time the Superman franchise has bearded up a Superman.

      • yoyo says:

I don’t know about him but Gina Caranno is a primo fame whore. MMA fighter, please. All she’s ever wanted to be is famous. If she could pull a Kardashian she would, they tried to make her the face of female MMA because she has model type looks but the very first ime she actually faced a real MMa fighter she got her face bashed in and never fought again -lol- ran off to hollywood to become a f-list star, but she’s working hard to climb to b-list status starting with hooking up with Cavill here.

PS (now they actually have an olympic champion as the face of female MMA! Bit of a one trick poney with the arm bars but hey it’s working! good for her!)

    • Ximena says:

I don’t know if that’s arrange for Carano’s new ‘career’ and her created rumors about WW, but why some say that he’s gay?! if you have proof, show them!

  21. Trace says:

Give me Hot, hot, clean-cut anyday! He was on Leno awhile back to promote Man of Steel. He was sexy as hell, very charming and funny with a dry sense of humor. I think after the movie comes out, those who think he’s too vanilla will be converted.

  22. Anna says:

Oh boy. Looks wise, I am still somewhere between ‘I wish this was Matt Bomer’ and ‘I see he’s handsome, but he does nothing for me.’

But after this interview…I dont know, he totally melted my heart. He just seems so emo, and giddy, and gracious, and open and…He is certainly growing on me.

    • marie says:

I still think Matt Bomer would have been better, I would have watched the movie just to stare at him..

I still feel nothing for him but why do people think this dude is gay?

  23. Andrea says:

I like Henry but his PR parade for Superman is ridiculous.

First off, Gina Carano is not “rumored” to play Wonder Woman and never has been. Her camp started those rumors and they have been using Cavill to advance that agenda. Instead of actually working on her acting (which despite her fighting skills is still very poor) she is trying to use Henry to get the role. (A role she is nowhere near good enough an actress for btw.)

Henry is desperate to be seen as straight. It is no coincidence at all that he’s now trying to pass himself off as the guy living part time with his girlfriend.

Both Carano and Cavill are shady as hell and the hilarious part is that some people are so dumb they are falling for it. Their “relationship” is no accident. It was arranged. She is fame hungry just like the rest of the women people bash on here. He is trying really hard to make it.

I’m excited to see Superman but I’m done with both of them personally.

    • Vee says:

Andrea – You sound way to vested in Wonder Woman and casting to be unbiased. Are you trying for the role?

And you cannot in one paragraph say “I like Henry” then call him “shady as hell” in the next.

You’ve got a bone to pick with them, it’s clear.

      • Lauli says:

@Vee, sorry but I disagree with you. The only thing that is clear, IMHO, is that Andrea is fed up with all the bollocks PR people try “to sell” us as if women were a bunch of idiots incapacle of critical thinking.

      • Andrea says:

I am invested. ::shrugs:: I’m a comics fan. I don’t like or appreciate the PR lies associated with a character I actually care about and I’m tired of the lies. I don’t respect it and I find it aggravating.

I’m no different than anyone else who is deeply invested in source material or books and would probably be sick and tired of seeing people use it and start rumors about themselves.

I see people get angry every single day for less here.

It’s absolutely possible to like Henry and still be annoyed at him. I still like him as an actor. I don’t enjoy his new image. ::shrugs::

    • Josie says:

Andrea You seem really really invested in this whole Henry being gay thing. Why is it so important to you? I don’t care what he is, tough i don’t think he is gay, he was in very serious long term relationships with women before he got famous.
I do agree with your stance on Carano, if you do a bit of digging it does rather look like her team planted the rumors. If wonder woman ever gets made she will mid/late 30’s -which is a little to old IMO.

      • Lauli says:

I don’t think Andrea is “invested”, I believe she is just tired and annoyed by all this pr fake stuff.

      • Andrea says:

I don’t care what his sexual orientation is but I don’t like PR lies.

I have been a fan of his for years and more importantly I am a fan of Superman. I watched Matt Bomer get shoved out bc he was gay only to watch this PR fiasco take place and I think it’s sad.

I’m also invested in who plays WW and I don’t care for someone planting rumors about themselves. I’ve waited years to get a WW movie and I, like many other fans, am sick and tired of Carano co-opting this conversation by staring rumors.

Also, yes, I’m sick of the PR lies. So I’d say it’s a combo of being over the deception and being annoyed as a fan to see people using their personal lives on properties I care about. Does that help?

      • Gabby says:

First of all a LOT of actors are gay. The vast majority of gay actors are closeted. Many of them are in fake relationships for PR, and for good reason.

When do we ever read anything about Henry on here or other gossip sites? What do they lead with? His relationship status, his girlfriend. That’s how you get coverage. And that’s how you score big huge superhero roles. That’s what Matt Bomer gave up when he decided it was more important to be out and proud for his family and kids.

It sucks. I’m tired of it too. I agree with Andrea 100%.

If you don’t understand why people think Henry is gay, do some google research. You might have to dig a little, but his PR team hasn’t erased all of it. I’m not posting links here – it’ll just draw his PR team’s attention right to what they forgot.

Also, I have a question for you – if Henry isn’t gay, who is? Who are the A-list actors who are in the closet and bearding? They have to be somewhere. And don’t say John Travolta. I mean young and hot ones.

  24. j.eyre says:

My lawd those are some nice photos.

  25. Josie says:

    @ Andrea
I understand that if you felt like you were being deceived you would be upset. I just don’t think there is any concrete proof that he’s gay other than that he has gay friends. But that doesn’t make him gay.
I don’t like Henry and Gina together, but there have been plenty of sighting of them out together when it wasn’t a publicity thing, sooo I don’t think they’re fake.

  26. Christo says:

This man is BEAUTIFUL. I know everyone has their own unique tastes. Many people prefer the over-the-top braggart with exaggerated pomp and circumstance—a glorified example of viagra-fueled pomposity, fake tans, and steroid-laden insecurity accompanied by the obligatory Iphone selfie.

Henry is the type of guy that surprises you with his sly wit, communicating volumes of thought with one glance from across the room. He doesn’t have to broadcast anything because his presence alone is communication enough. Call me old-fashioned, but I’m a sucker for the understated guys like him rather than the obvious, “show me” marketing of today’s Facebook generation.

  27. Isabelle says:

..and he reads. That does it for me. Men reading books, my kryptonite.

  28. AustinMJ says:

    YUM.

  29. Patrice says:

“Colin and Marianne Cavill, parents to five boys…” Good Lord. You mean to tell me that somewhere in the world, there are FOUR MORE of him running around?! *Packs bags* 😀

    • Miss M says:

Hahahahahaha! Best comment in this thread! I was thinking that when I was reading it, ha!

    • anet says:

yet, England is boring and I dislike at least 80 percent of them aside from John Taylor and Simon Lebon…and maybe Jude Law on a good day.

  30. jj says:

I really really love Gina Carano and Henry Caill together, i think they make a beautiful and sweet couple and i’m hoping it isn’t just for publicity. Honestly, she is gorgeous and a super amazing fighter and she’s a good actress too.

  31. Tiffany27 says:

I’m excited for Man of Steel, but idgaf about Henry Cavill. He’s like a talking piece of toast. Hats off to Gina for being able to stay awake when he speaks.

  32. Lucy says:

AMAZING the kick in the ass that you are getting some fans when they know that is more false that a red dollar
