The Critcs Choice Awards are tonight!

Early this morning, in a haze on the People’s Choice post, I claimed that this Sunday’s Golden Globes would be the next big award show. I lied! I had completely forgotten about the Critics Choice Awards, which have gotten to be a really big deal the past five years or so. All the stars show up in their best “business-cocktail” outfits and get hammered with film critics. The Critics Choice Awards (also known as the Broadcast Film Critics Awards) will air on VH1 at 8 p.m. EST tonight! The Los Angeles Times did their predictions for the winners.

BEST PICTURE AND DIRECTOR
Close races between Slumdog Millionaire and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Bet on “Millionaire” hitting both jackpots.

BEST ACTOR
Sean Penn (”Milk”) has won all other critics’ awards. This one’s next. But, beware: That doesn’t mean he’ll claim the Golden Globe this Sunday.

BEST ACTRESS
Fierce diva clawfest between (”Rachel Getting Married”) and her ole costar Meryl Streep (”Doubt”). Streep pummeled Hathaway in “Devil Wears Prada” and will do so again here.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Heath Ledger of course. Members of BFCA are junketeers who did final video interviews with Ledger just before he died.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
In this race, I’m totally befuddled. Penelope Cruz (”Vicky Cristina Barcelona”) had the early buzz, but Viola Davis (”Doubt”) and Kate Winslet (The Reader) have come on strong in recent weeks. Cruz and Winslet were chummy darlings of the junket scene in recent years, so it’s probably between them. BFCA members are suckers for glamour. Cruz it is.

[From The Los Angeles Times]

I totally disagree with nearly every one of these predictions. I think Benjamin Button will win Best Picture, and maybe Ron Howard for Best Director. For Best Actor, I do think Sean Penn’s got it. Best Actress will be for Kate Winslet, Best Supporting Actor might be Heath Ledger, but I wouldn’t count on it. Best Supporting Actress will probably be Penelope Cruz, she’s probably got a better shot at winning an Oscar this year than most people realize. Tune in to VH1 tonight to see if I was wrong!

  3. The best actress this year was a british actress in a French movie- I Loved You For So Long.

She was the best this year and none of the other actresses even got close to her performance.

Kate Winslet has peaked years ago, and is doing the same thing again and again for years now.

Mickey Rourke should get all the awards for the phenomenal work he has done in the Wrestler.

Benjamin Button was a boring movie and lame performances- acting -wise.

  4. Ned, It’s Kristin Scott Thomas, who’s bi-lingual, and I agree with your judgment of her as best actress this year. Remember her in “The English Patient” with Ralph Fiennes?
