Critics Choice: Slumdog Millionaire big winner, Brangelina big losers

critic_choice_awards_01_wen
As it turns out, The Los Angeles Times was right about every major category win at the Critics Choice Awards on Thursday night.

The major winners were: Sean Penn for Best Actor, Meryl Streep (Doubt) and Anne Hathaway (Rachel Getting Married) for Best Actress, Slumdog Millionaire for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Score and Best Young Actor. Best Supporting Actors were Kate Winslet (The Reader) and the late Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight), and Milk got Best Ensemble.

The critics have spoken, and “Slumdog Millionaire” is their final answer.

The rags-to-riches tale won a leading five prizes, including best picture, at Thursday night’s Critics’ Choice Awards. “Slumdog” also won honors for director Danny Boyle, writer Simon Beaufoy, star Dev Patel and composer A.R. Rahman.

Sean Penn was a double winner, earning best actor honors and sharing the acting-ensemble prize for “Milk.” ”The Dark Knight” also won a pair of trophies: best action movie and best supporting actor for Heath Ledger.

From The Guardian

Now that we’ve covered the winners, we can get to the good stuff. Brad and Angelina made their first red-carpet awards-ceremony appearance of the year, and were rewarded with, by my count, fifteen gratuitous cut-away shots. Angelina was wearing a silvery drape-y-Grecian-style dress, with her hair in a simple ponytail. Brad grew out his unfortunate moustache, joining it with a salt-and-pepper goatee which looked nice. Not only were they the recipients of so many cut-away shots, they were heckled (nicely) by opening host Jason Alexander.

There were several “wtf” moments during the ceremony, many about the sub-par choices of presenters. Amanda Bynes is a lovely young woman, but she’s sort of bitchy and Lohan-esque in appearance and attitude. Jason Segal, who I have a crush on, was upstaged by co-presenter Kristin Bell. Diane Lane, resplendent in a black, sequined cocktail dress, presented the Joel Segel Award to Richard Gere, who gave a slightly awkward speech about Tibet. And is there *any* occasion to which Kate Beckinsale will not show up, fully decked out in a ball gown and pageant-hair?

I haven’t seen Slumdog Millionaire yet, but I hear it’s good. I doubt this line-up will be the award-winners at the Golden Globes on Sunday, though. Here’s hoping that the red carpet is a hell of a lot better.

    brangie look good

  2. Mairead says:

    Oh well done Danny Boyle!
I heard him being interviewed on the radio the other day about the film and he was saying just how important the various awards are to him and the team as a whole. So it’s brilliant that someone who really appreciates the accolade got it.

I LOOOOOVE Eva Longoria’s dress; brilliant colour and striking details and accessories. Her makeup is woeful though. That super-pale lipstick suits nobody, outside of a very carefully-lit photo shoot.

Note to Amanda Bynes – I don’t care how popular those identikit Hervé Leger dresses are, clevage AND leg on display along with orange skin makes you look trashy. Knee-length would have looked (marginally) better.

  3. geronimo says:

Yay! Congrats to Danny Boyle, really well-deserved by all accounts I’ve read of Slumdog. Must see. And well done to the others, particularly Sean Penn and Kate Winslet.

  4. Len says:

Angelina looks so old. She’s only 33 isn’t she? She doesn’t look very healthy.

  5. Gracie says:

I do have one question. Kate Beckinsale is a lovely woman with a bod that I might kill someone for.

But what does she do? Is she in films I am not aware of? Does she consider herself an actress?

    Just wondering.

  6. bros says:

as soon as I saw slumdog millionaire, i sent out a text message to all my friends that said “slumdog millionaire, best movie 2008” and it looks like its coming true. that movie seriously rocked, on so many levels.

mairead, i thought the same thing-will someone take that herve leger dress out to the back of the barn and shoot it already? its the most over-worn dress of the year, and it wont die! I thought celebrities didnt like wearing the same thing as other celebs, yet this dress has been on almost everyone this year! im so over it! and this late in the game bynes chooses it? maybe for the MTV movie awards, but not for the big kids show.

ps thank god manson’s ex is returning to wearing normal clothes and makeup and isnt trying to be a dita-clone anymore.

  7. DEe says:

Yeah…….the actresses are wearing mute colors that wash out their skin. More vibrancy is needed, especially for A.J.

  8. lara says:

Speak about most over-worn dresses, that grecian-style is so 2007. As for Kate B., she was nominated for “Nothing but the truth”, therefore I think she still considers herself an actress ;-).

  9. DD says:

Look at what the saint complex is doing to AJ. She looks so severe these days. She used to be stunning.

  10. lara says:

BTW, this is why super hardcore fans (with few exceptions) shouldn’t be writing gossip posts about their idols. It’s boring.
You left the best part out! The bitchface Angelina was making when she realized she lost. Hilarious. Who cares about Brad’s matching moustache/goatee?!

  11. roller says:

    bravo lara 🙂

  12. monica says:

did you guys see angie’s face when anne won…if looks could kill.
everyone is talking about it (as in the news media and other gossip blogs). i’m not surpirsed that this hasn’t been mention here but it was hilarious.
there is also a piece out that anne has already won the golden globes. it was fluke on the golden globe page that was taken down but i’m sure if you look it is still up somewhere.

  13. california angel says:

The entire point of this blog is to allow people to express their opinions, no matter how much of a “hardcore fan”/hardcore hater they might be towards a celebrity. I really like that this site has writers with different opinions and styles, it makes the reading much more interesting. Would you prefer that everyone had the same opinion? That is just being unrealistic. Yes, Angelina did look a little miffed when Anne won, but that is not even what this post was about anyways.

  14. lara says:

“Would you prefer that everyone had the same opinion? ” Where did you get that from? But thanks for asking, actually I would LOVE to hear different opinions and not two posts on the same day from the same person stating merely the same thing about how great Brangelina is. That’s my opinion.

  15. daisy424 says:

I hopped over to DL to see Anne’s rambling
*Who me? Trying to look surprised* acceptance speech. I have to disagree with some of the above comments.

Angie didn’t looked pissed to me, She looked bored.

Because she remained calm and didn’t put on the
“gracious – I didn’t win act” jump and down, smiling, applauding the winners = she’s pissed?

    Disappointed maybe, but not pissed.

Now if Angie pulled a razor blade out of her ponytail and slashed Anne on her way up to the stage, you would have a point. Nice try though.

  16. geronimo says:

@Daisy – yes, you’re right. Also, AJ is way too media savvy (and I mean this in a good way) to publicly come across as being bothered. It’s her living and she’s allowed to be disappointed (and yes, she may have been) but I’m sure she takes it in her stride. Although I’d have paid money to see the blade action!

  17. daisy424 says:

@Geronimo; She could have had Zahara hiding under her dress to slash Anne…

    Damn I miss the emoticons!!!

  18. Kaiser says:

Geronimo, Daisy – I thought Angie looked a little drunk, not bored, but you could be right. Keep in mind that at the Critics Choice and the Globes, they keep the liquor flowing.

  19. calfornia angel says:

My apologies, I did not realize that you were so passionate about it. Yeesh.

  20. geronimo says:

@Daisy – I’d have said Maddox rather than Z – isn’t he the resident blade expert in the House of J-P?!

Kaiser – for sure, all that sitting around waiting for a result that’s not necessarily going to please you – who wouldn’t get pissed? (pissed = drunk btw, my side of the pond.)

  21. daisy424 says:

@Geronimo, I wrote Maddox and then backspaced! Z reminds me of my Granddaughter, they both kick ass.

@Kaiser, after looking at it again, I see your point. Maybe both, eh?

  22. lara says:

Dear california angel, apologies accepted. I just skipped your condescending yeesh part. Yeesh.

  23. Ana says:

I dislike Kate Beckinsale. Well actually I’m jealous because my husband has a crush on her.
Then I started reading her articles and she says some really stupid things.
But in her defense, she does have another Underworld movie coming out this month.
Angelina looks great. So beautiful and classy. I was glad to see her out of her regular uniform of black.
Dakota Fanning just keeps melting my ice cold heart. She looks so great and true to her age by not caking herself in make-up. I LOVE her pale skin, not faked baked.
Amanda’s dress has already been worn (exact color and everything) by Denise Richards. If that doesn’t turn you off of a style nothing will.
And I’m pretty sure Kate Beckinsale wore a longer white version over a year ago. It was a beautiful dress and she wore it before the style got murdered….

  24. Ned says:

I can’t see anything lovely about Amanda Bynes. She looks trashy, bitchy, and, to be honest, she is far from pretty.

Brangelina look very fake and contrived, but the worst part is Angelina’s unfortunate combination of Botox and anorexia.

I don’t know if I can use this word here, but what the hell happened to her boobs?
Did she take the implants out or did her body had to use all the breast tissue to survive her extreme diet?

I don’t mind ingoring what has become of Angelina’s face, but she used to have a nice feminine body.

  25. Ned says:

Anne Hathaway is a mediocre actress and her winning just show how dismal is these past years crops of female leading ladies.

Moreover, there was a time when film actresses were beautiful or at least nice to look at.

Nor Anne nor other “actresses” such as Jennifer Garner, should have had a career in film.

Rachel’s Getting Married was a great film, but the script, the direcor and the entire ensemble cast made it the wonderful film it is.
Anne was fine, but the film was an ensemble work.

  26. Ter says:

Angie is back to the haggard look of yore. She will be bone thin the next time we see her in public and her face has taken on the tautness, sheen and pallor of a waxed corpse. When she looks like this it reminds me of a praying mantis. Ugh!

  27. lulu says:

you said, big losers my thought exactly and they didn’t look good either and every time someone got an award they looked so mad, what did they think their movies sucks which they should have never been nominated in the first place.

  28. lulu says:

they can buy fame and nomination with money but they can’t buy awards or oscars.

  29. doodahs says:

Daisy: You really thought Anne was putting on the ‘who me’ act? I thought she looked like she was leaving her body with nerves and shock. To be tied with Meryl.. that’s some pretty big acclaim. I agree that Angie looked seriously bored.

Ana: I don’t think Kate B is in the next Underworld movie. It’s Rona Mitra I believe.

  30. o says:

    these two are so boring.
mannequins have more spark than they do.

  31. Persistent Cat says:

I definitely think Angie looked pissed. She was pissed last year and vocal about people not taking to A Mighty Heart. If she’s bored, don’t show up. She wants these awards.

I think Kate Beckinsale is always the most beautiful woman in any room.

  32. Ana says:

doodahs: yes, you are correct. No wonder I haven’t heard that much about this one….

  33. daisy424 says:

@doodahs, Yes I do. Anne is an actress after all, I tend to think she would have had something prepared instead of the rambling. Her reaction and speech reminded me of a prom queen at a HS assembly in a gym.
To be fair, I have never been in that position and couldn’t say how I would react.

@Ned, Nursing babies changes your breasts. They are never the same.

  34. vdantev says:

Wow what a bunch of bitter, hen-clucking, sewing circle harpies. When you show me your movie awards, then you sour internet ’50 cats in the house’ spinsters can whine about AJ’s nomination.

  35. Tooty says:

I don’t see how Brad and Angie are “big losers” if everyone is talking about them and not the winners.

  36. Kim says:

Tooty, every one is talking about them but not saying particularly nice things. Drew Barrymore and Kate Winslet are 33, Aj looks like their long lost mother who has been grieving for a long time. I agree she has gone down hill. Big losers in everything these two.

  37. Di says:

They lost at the golden globes too. They haven’t won anything in the last couple of years. Karma is cruel.

  38. vdantev says:

Di- which shows you know exactly d*ck about karma, like most people.

  39. Josephina says:

Awards that Angie has already won:

    1 Oscar Award
    2 Screen Actor Guilds Awards
    3 Golden Globes Awards
    1 Critics Choice Award
    1 People Choice Awards**

** By the way, she just WON last week at the People Choice Awards for “Best Female Action Hero.” Brad won at the People Choice Awards last week as well.

Currently, how many other young actresses by the age of 33 have accomplished what she has accomplished? She is so much more than just a pretty face…And she has Brad to boink with night after night after night…aaahhhh, love.

  40. nina says:

AJ’s GG’s and Oscars are from 2000 or earlier. Nothing in the last 8 years, hence the big charity efforts.

  41. Linda says:

I have just seen Slum Dog Millionaire and walked out after witnessing the torture and abuse of a young child, which followed violence, electrical torture, starvation, threatened abuse of a baby and all together too much abuse and nastiness to be able to watch any longer.I can’t believe more people didn’t walk out. Have we become so desensitised to violence and abuse that we condone this as a “good” movie. What is wrong with us as a society ?
