Robert Downey Jr. is a Men’s Vogue cover boy

Robert Downey Jr. is the cover boy for Men’s Vogue, Spring 2009. The issue will somehow be included or integrated into the April Vogue issue. Apparently, Conde Nast is trying something new because the launch of Men’s Vogue hasn’t been the success they were hoping for.

It’s a really beautiful picture of Downey – he looks good for his age and his history. People have started comparing him to George Clooney, but I’m not so sure. Clooney and Downey are very different men with very different appeals – but both can wear the hell out of a suit, so there’s that. Downey is nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Golden Globe for his role in Tropic Thunder, and his turn in the massively successful Iron Man has put him back on the A-list.

Robert Downey Jr. has never looked hotter than on the cover of the upcoming Men’s Vogue. The magazine has gone from publishing ten times a year to doing two seasonal editions. The next issue, Spring 2009, will appear on the back of regular Vogue magazine in its April 2009 issue.

For the first time, Vogue will couple the male mag by binding it to the back as a reverse-bound issue having two covers. If you flip Vogue over, you get Men’s Vogue.

The future of Men’s Vogue is still up in the air. Publisher Conde’ Nast indicates it is an experiment that may allow the male version to survive the chopping block and enjoy a second life.

Step aside George Clooney, you may have finally met your match.

In addition to Downey’s cover-boy status, Iron Man 2 already has some big casting news. Downey, of course, will return as Tony Stark. Gwyneth “GOOP” Paltrow, too, is returning. But who will play the next villain? As SamHill mentioned yesterday, some say Mickey Rourke, some say Sam Rockwell.

Mickey Rourke, who earned numerous awards and nominations for his work in “The Wrestler,” is in talks to play a villain in “Iron Man 2.”

Variety.com said Rourke is up for the role of the Russian arms dealer, the Crimson Dynamo, in “IM2.”

Director Jon Favreau reportedly plans to begin shooting the sequel to the 2008 Marvel Entertainment blockbuster this spring. Paramount Pictures, which will distribute the movie, has scheduled it for release in the summer of 2010.

Robert Downey Jr. plays the title character in the “Iron Man” franchise and Variety.com said Sam Rockwell is in talks to play his as-yet-undisclosed nemesis in the second installment. Rockwell can now be seen in “Frost/Nixon.”

I don’t have anything against Mickey Rourke, but I absolutely adore Sam Rockwell. Even though Rockwell’s a great actor, I wonder if he can pull off a comic-style villain. Rourke might be better, simply because he already seems a little cartoon-y.

I love that picture of Robert! Yummy! But he is definitely a different type of handsome than George Clooney. More… quirky-seeming?

I can imagine Sam Rockwell (whom I also adore) as a comic villain. He was the villain in the first Charlie’s Angels movie, remember? Pretty comic-ey already in some respects. I’m convinced there’s nothing Sam can’t play.

There is no actor on this planet that has stolen my heart more than RDJr. His early boyish good looks and charm has segued into a strength and quirky handsomeness. The edgy quality he brings to every role has always been aces in my book. When he played Calista Flockhart’s main squeeze in Ally McBeal and we were serenaded each week with his dulcet tones, I melted for him. He is funny, self deprecating, able to reach for those dramatic moments with ease and believability not to mention his set of amazing pipes – such talent! When he went off the rails with drugs, I was heartbroken, so to see him comeback to the A List where he so rightly belongs is wonderful.

I agree that he and Clooney are different types of men but they both have that ability to make women melt and men wish they could be them – that’s the mark of a true movie star.

Robert Downey Jr… You make me melt with those deep brown eyes of yours.

  4. Mairead says:

  5. LaLa says:

@Mairead — could not agree more

he was almost i dont know … dopey? looking before now yum!

  6. NotBlonde says:

On top of the physical gorgeousness and the oozing sexiness, he is an extremely talented actor. My mom showed my sisters and me “Chaplin” years and years ago to show us what brilliant acting really was.

*sigh* I would be on that like white on rice.

  7. elainebenes says:

I could stare at this man all day. And he doesn’t even have to take his clothes off!! Just so hot.

My sons & I loved him in Tropic Thunder. I want one.

  9. lunachick says:

I finally saw Iron Man recently and LOVED it! Robert Downey Jr. absolutely owned that role and made the movie.

I’m not a Mickey Rourke fan at all. Detest him actually…I just think he’s gross and his off-screen rep turns me off too. I really hope Sam Rockwell gets the role!

  10. Kevin says:

    That’s one airbrushed mofo.

  11. Bella Mama says:

    i just simply love him

  12. c says:

Yeah, RDJ has it. I’m way more attracted to him. Clooney? Never. I’d take RDJ any day. There’s something about Clooney that’s always bugged me.

  13. Ling says:

I’m not saying I’ll cry if it doesn’t go to Rockwell. I’m just saying I may.

  14. CB Rawks says:

I feel like I discovered Rockwell, because I first saw him years ago in this small-budget horror film called Clownhouse, and I decided he was a big talent that would go far! heheh
    And yes, still love him!

  15. tess says:

    whattaman, whattaman, whattaman.

definitely improves with age. i think this cover is a bit photoshopped as RDJ has “crumpled” a bit with age, like fine parchment. too bad they couldn’t let him stay in his fine, original form.

  16. lunachick says:

Hey, I just checked Sam Rockwell’s IMDB entry, and it says he’s playing Justing Hammer in Iron Man 2 (currently in pre-production, to be released in 2010). Sweet!
