Maggie Gyllenhaal in Dior at ‘White House Down’ premiere: crazy or cute?

Last night was the NYC premiere of White House Down, which I’m sure will be yet another big hit film for Channing Tatum. Channing, Jamie Foxx and Maggie Gyllenhaal were all at the premiere. Maggie plays a White House staffer (to Jamie Foxx’s president) in the film – she might even play a Secret Service agent? Anyway, Maggie got a lot of the attention at last night’s premiere because she wore this completely ridiculous Christian Dior dress. You know I sort of like Maggie – she’s smart and interesting, and sometimes her style is kind of cool. But I think this dress was a big mistake. The super-structured peplum is ridiculous! And it’s made out of, like, a waffle-knit! I also kind of hate the clash of patterns and I think the skirt should be knee-length rather than tea-length.

Have we really discussed Maggie’s pixie cut? She got it several months ago. I have mixed feelings – I don’t think it’s as flattering and youthful as she thinks it is, but it’s not terrible either. I think it will look cuter when she grows it out a little bit more, but it just seems to be at an awkward stage right now.

I’m also including photos of Channing and Jamie, of course, the real stars of the film. I like Channing’s suit and his goatee. Hot. I think Jamie looks better with facial hair too – it’s weird seeing him clean-shaven in the film. Jamie also looks like he lost weight for the movie, then bulked up after they were done.

Here’s the extended trailer for White House Down – is his daughter the same little girl from Moneyball? Oooh, Jason Clarke is in this!

who doesn’t love a long cable knit skirt topped with a b&w sea anemone peplum in summertime?

  2. Contrived says:

    Love her, think she’s awesome!

    But, some peeps need hair!

She looks kinda Nancy Reaganish…white house movie…does she realize that’s the look she’s rock’n?

    • Spooks says:

I love her too. So so much. She can do no wrong in my book.
And I find her to be very beautiful in an unusual way

    • Kosmos says:

I love her, too, she’s an individual, not a cookie-cutter person or actor; however, if the top of the dress had been carried down to a flatter fitting peplum, I would have thought this dress was okay. The fat center mess I definitely do not think is flattering on anyone. I think peplums are generally flattering, but not the bulky type, eeww.

  3. Dawn says:

Ewww…not so into it but isn’t she thin? Plus I really like her hubby in the Killing, he is really good!

    • KUNTA KINTE says:

Peter Skarsgard is weirdly HOT and he is amazing in the killing. I totally would.

  4. Lupe says:

Seems like it probably looked awesome on the runway, but for an actual event? On Maggie Gyllenhaal? Might’ve liked it on someone else.

    • bns says:

I agree. I like it, but I have an irrational dislike for Maggie so I would like it more on someone else.

  5. TG says:

I love Maggie G she is the best and am a bit obsessed with her. To me she is beautiful and elegant and alluring and a great actress. I will watch any movie she is in. My favorite is, gosh I just forgot the name, the one where she is a baker and Will Farrell is an IRS agent. Love it and love her hair.

  6. Nanz says:

I actually like this dress on her. I hate the idea of this dress, but love the execution. How does that even make sense?

  7. janie says:

    She is certainly fashion challenged…

  8. Dorothy#1 says:

I think she looks better than usual! At least she is showing off her figure!

  9. marie says:

I’m a fan of Maggie, but that hair over the ears is killing me, I wanna trim it.

  10. Jess says:

I don’t mind the dress though it would be better if the bottom was a pencil skirt shape.

Hate the hair though. I think the length is fine for her, other than the too long sides, but she needs a more structured style. What she’s got going on now is the cut my grandma got when she stopped giving a damn. Make it more textured or a little spiky and she’d look great.

  11. DanaG says:

If it wasn’t for that middle ruffle/peplem thing it could be ok. Don’t like the hair on her she needs it a bit longer. Not so sure this will be a big hit.

  12. pao la says:

I’m sorry, i might be the only one here, but i don’t see all the fuss about Maggie or her brother they seem so boring. i might be wrong but she doesn’t seem good looking to me. I just fall asleep everytime i see her.

    • Contrived says:

The fuss is about them both being incredibly good actors…nevermind Jake is ridiculously hot—love and other drugs anyone?

Maggie is way more beautiful, charming, amazing in action. Stills she can look..yawn..if you don’t know her.

Watch some of her stuff, great side roles like in ‘away we go’

How bout the G-haals in Donnie Darko..love their scenes together—so hilarious!

      • paige says:

wow, i don’t find either one of them interesting as actors probably because they are not interesting as people. she is especially unattractive.. nepotisim is alive and well. look up their parents…

    • Nikki says:

I find her to be pretty funny-looking, and a mediocre actress to boot.

She has that “anti-starlet” quality which some find appealing, much like Zooey Deschanel, who is also a dishwater actress.

  13. maggiegrace says:

The dress is horrible, just horrible. Her hair is very badly styled as well. I love Maggie, just love her….but the comment above is so true – she is fashion challenged. She rarely nails it and often falls completely flat. That despite she has such an interesting face and lovely body. Maggie, girl – call me!

  14. KLO says:

Maggie looks great here! The whole ensemble works, even if it might seems wierd in parts.
Love her hairdo, I think this is the best one she`s had in a looong time.

  15. Pinky says:

I say yes to the top part and pattern, no to the middle, and the bottom looks like a giant spine from some kind of evil sea creature.

  16. serena says:

I don’t like Channing Tatum at all physically, but damn Jamie Foxx sure does it for me.

  17. maggiegrace says:

I’m not an action movie fan, but that trailer looks SOOOO GOOD!!!!!!!! Jamie Fox as a Jordan-wearing president? Love it! Chatum Daly’s star is rising high these days.

  18. Wif says:

I love (!!!!) the skirt part. But I’m a knitter, so that may be why.

Also, in regards to the peplum, it’s not a “waffle-knit” it’s coral shaped crochet. It’s featured in this fascinating Ted Talk (and my husband keeps one at his desk as a stress reduction tool, if you were ever interested in crochet at all, try it, super fun). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zGEDHMF4rLI

  19. KSPaula says:

I actually like this dress quite a bit – I think the contrast of pattern is interesting. I imagine its challenging to find something new all the time – this worked for her I thought. Good for you girl!

  20. Anna says:

Dior: not cute, tho points to MG for looking like she actually put some effort into face/hair/fit.

You know what IS cute tho? Charming Potato. Looking very delicious in that suit…I am enjoying that plaid and a pocket square. And even the goatee.

  21. Lflips says:

Well, I guess the cheese stands alone. I actually love this look. Her face looks so young and fresh and that dress is so funky it just works for her.

  22. ladybert62 says:

That dress gave me a headache!

  23. Ginger says:

I’m not digging the dress or the haircut. The top makes her look flat chested when I know she’s got some boobs. Only two women in the world can pull off that hair cut–Charlize and Mia Farrow. I am looking forward to seeing this movie. Channing cleans up quite nicely!

  24. Sumodo1 says:

The peplum looks like jumbled up white and black gloves. Cable knit skirt in June? On Grandma, maybe, if she’s freezing in Vermont….

  25. What? says:

She always looks like an old lady/Droopy Dog mix. Yuck.

  26. Mew says:

She’s pretty but somehow I don’t know about the hair.. it’s pretty and nice and cute but seems to make her look somehow older…

    • Barhey says:

I appreciate her work as an actress but her face looks so old to me. There’s just something about her that looks permanently 70 years old.

  27. Roxy says:

Not liking the dress, but I luv Maggie, she is too cute. Loved her in Mona Lisa Smile and Secretary!! She’s a great actress! 🙂

  28. I Choose Me says:

I’m a Maggie Gyllenhaal fan so my bias is probably at work here but I kinda dig it. It’s different, it seems to fit well and she wears it with confidence. It’s much better imo than some of the shlumpy outfits she’s worn in the past.

  29. Lucy says:

This is the best she’s looked in a long time. (which is not that great) and she looks like someone who looks good for their age who is 45, not 35.

  30. lisa says:

she always looks a little greasy to me. not k stew filthy but greasy.

  31. Stubbylove says:

If there’s a dress Maggie doesn’t have to wear a bra in, she’s all over it. I do think she looks lovely here though. 🙂

  32. lena horne says:

i think she looks like an old lady

  33. JASON CLARKE IS IN THE MOVIE AND YOU DIDN’T POST PICTURES OF HIM FROM THE PREMIERE?!?

(Sory for the caps, I just find him so incredibly sexy)

  34. KUNTA KINTE says:

I have seen her in person, she is stunning. The most beautiful blue eyes..

  35. ms. deneuve says:

she is sooo unattractive! and arrogant and boring and overrated.

  36. bread, please says:

it is a pixie cut; hence, it is not supposed to grow out a bit to look better. MG is one of those women who looks delightful with a pixie. it opens up her face in a way her longer hair can’t. most people are enslaved to traditional idea of what’s feminine that short hair always equals bad to them–those poor suckers. viva la short hair!
