I much prefer quietly, elegant and delicate names for girls. Especially for a lovely young lady. Violet is also a quiet, elegant and delicate name so new sister’s name fits the family profile.

Old fashioned does not have to mean unlovely or unsophisticated, and at least it’s not over-used and abused. It may however be more than an mouthful for such a small bundle of love and beauty. *smile*

It’s a lovely name. An angelic based moniker is nothing to sneeze at. It doesn’t sound trite or made up. I’m sure that she will grow into it and wear it with grace.

Seraphina is dignified and elegant – as opposed to the sleazy moniker Matt Damon gave his kid – it just screams “Hey, I’ll be shaking my t*ts on stage just like my mom.”

Just for clarification I’m guessing you mean “passion” in the traditional or religous sense – not in the Hollywood bodice-ripper sense *wink*

I must say Séraphine is probably one of the prettiest names I’ve ever heard.

I like the spelling of Serafina better. Seraphina is too much like Seraphim.

I like Serephina – it’s not ‘out there’ as far as I’m concerned. Plus it shortens to ‘Sera’ which sounds rather sweet.

For those curious about the name’s origins: in Judaism and Christianity, the Seraphim are one of the choirs of angels. The Hebrew word “Seraph” (“seraphim” is plural) translates to something like “one who burns,” burning being a metaphor for passion.

Finally, my Jewish education was put to good use!

I think I prefer your Séraphine, bellatrix, it’s got more of a contemporary feel to it but Serephina is lovely too. As is Phina.

It can’t be italian as it would have an “f” instead of “ph”. But there’s a story about Saint Seraphina that does originate from Italy (wasn’t it a woman whose infidelities drove her husband crazy until he decided to bring and leave her at a convent?).

It is indeed a rather ancient name and I actually know someone’s grandmother who’s called Séraphine and also a little baby girl who’s been named so (in France). It means “angel taking the human appearance” in Hebrew if my memory serves me correctly.

In Russia, I believe the diminutive form to call a Seraphina is Phina (pronounce Feenah) which I find absolutely adorable.
