Enquirer: Winona Ryder still ‘trash-talks’ former BFF Gwyneth Paltrow

I’m sure this story will ruffle the feathers of many Winona-stans, but I think this is good news for Winona Ryder. Her career comeback is going well, she spent a few years doing smaller parts in smaller movies, getting some critical acclaim again, getting photographed more often and coming out in public more often. So it’s good news when the tabloids start discussing her as a scandalous and/or bizarre person. Winona’s always been a little strange, and now a new generation of tabloid readers get to enjoy it. For the young’uns, let me tell you: Winona Ryder used to be like Kristen Stewart, Selena Gomez and Jennifer Lawrence all rolled into one. Winona was HUGE. She dated her costars, she was a child actor who transitioned to adult roles beautifully, she won awards and praise, she was BFFs with some of the biggest celebrities out there and there were plenty of scandals and drama. Ah, the halcyon days of the 1990s.

So this Enquirer story references some of those older scandals. Like, Johnny Depp and Winona were crazy about each other way back when (before Kate Moss, even), and Winona used to be BFFs with Gwyneth Paltrow. So, enjoy:

Winona Ryder is getting weirder by the day, becoming a virtual recluse and taking potshots at her former friends.

Insiders say she’s dyed her hair bright white and become obsessed with online shopping, filling her closets with unworn clothes that still have their tags. And just about the only time she leaves her home is when her cleaning staff arrives, because she can’t stand talking to them.

Winona has also been trash-talking her ex-BFF Gwyneth Paltrow and former flame Johnny Depp, a source tells The ENQUIRER.

“She’s alienating so many people it’s no wonder she’s turning into a hermit,” said a longtime friend of the 41-year-old actress.

Winona has a “major grudge” against Gwyneth because she believes the blonde-haired beauty made unflattering comments about her in an online lifestyle blog four years ago. And Winona also never got over Gwyneth beating her out for a plum role in the 1998 hit movie “Shakespeare in Love” – and winning an Oscar for it!

“Those comments were a huge embarrassment for her,” the pal said.

The friend says Winona has also been blasting Depp, 50, for hooking up with 27- year Amber Heard not long after splitting with his longtime love, Vanessa Paradis, 40, last year.

“Johnny couldn’t care less care less,” said the friend, “but she’s really ragging on him for being so predictable and going for a blonde in her twenties.”

As The ENQUIRER reported in April, Winona had a fleeting hope she and “The Lone Ranger” star would reunite.

“It’s really sad she’s become so vindictive,” the friend continued. “She rarely leaves the house because she hates being around people so much. And she makes sure her housekeepers don’t speak English because that way they are less likely to know who she is.

“When she was younger, her eccentricities were perceived as cute and quirky, but now she’s just bizarre.”

[From The Enquirer]

I think the Gwyneth reference is about an old Goop post from a few years ago where Gwyneth talked about “how to break up with a friend”. And the Hollywood rumor back in 1997 was that Gwyneth outright STOLE Winona’s script for Shakespeare In Love and Goop went behind Winona’s back and got the part. And they were never friends after that. As for the Depp stuff… I’m not sure I believe Wino and Johnny still talk. She might talk smack about him (as she should, because he’s absurd), but I doubt Johnny even hears about it.

Oh, and remember how Matt Damon dumped Minnie Driver (while appearing on Oprah!!!) and then he started up with Winona two seconds later? I wish people still brought that up, because that was an amazing scandal. God, I miss Winona’s scandals. I want her to start dating someone really controversial. Not Charlie Sheen! I want her to throw it down old-school, like Winona could steal Garrett Hedlund away from Kirsten Dunst. That would be fun.

WTF is up with her in the first picture?? She has crazy eyes!

    • Jane's Wasted Talent says:

Looks like botched surgery. If you look at a close-up, the inside corners of her eyes are stretched toward her nose in a way that’s obviously unnatural. Looking at these pics, she might also have a slight case of the cavewoman botox effect going on with her eyebrows (see Cindy Crawford).

      • Becky says:

She has crazy eyes like that in every picture. I always assumed it was some sort of medication, although I’ve never actually heard of any meds that do that. Anyone?

      • Arthur says:

They are prefectly gorgeous eyes. I think people forget about what a real expression looks like.

      • GByeGirl says:

She’s always had “crazy eyes”. My best friend for 30 years also has those eyes. She’s crazy, but has never had plastic surgery, botox, etc.

    • QQ says:

I figure it was pills or a lot of botox or both

    • Adrien says:

I think she’s not comfortable in the red carpet. She looked like a deer caught in headlights.

    • Hayley says:

I didn’t notice the eyes. I was too busy wondering where her hair went.

      • Kzinti says:

I agree about the hair. It looks like mine did after about 24 rounds of chemo. I didn’t lose all my hair, but about 2/3rds of it, and it broke off, rather than falling out at the root (for the most part), so I was left with a mess looking like the first picture.

However, I have to say WR > GP any day.

    • Fret says:

WTF is up with your face, idiot!

  2. Apsutter says:

I freaking love her. I don’t like the ageist/sexist tinge to this story that when she was young it was quirky and cute but now that she’s an old hag it’s bizarre and she’s a freak.

    • Launicaangelina says:

I agree! Thank you for saying that. I love her and she’s definitely quirky but I doubt the level of bitterness, relayed in this story, is true. Anyway, EVERYONE talks smack about Johnny and Gwyneth because they are messes.

    • Angie says:

If she is trash talking Gwyneth, I am Team Winona!! Just became a fan.

    • Becky says:

Couldn’t agree more. Especially when, if anything, she has only gotten more interesting, and certainly no less beautiful.

    • Liberty says:

Agreed. Diana Vreeland went into her 90s being her own eccentric self re style and it was fine and celebrated. There is “senior fabulous ladies” site that shows amazingly-garbed Park Avenue women in glory, doing what the hell they like as well with style as they probably were back when they were just Winona’s age too: http://advancedstyle.blogspot.com/

I think this hits a particular style snit of mine: we’re so boringly homogeneous. Stars inflate and carve and spray tan to look like one prototype blonde housefrau (possibly even like the “source” who is dutifully bitching about all this to the Enq). Everyone wears the same looks, the same way in our “civilian” world as well. Yeah, trends. Yeah, some things are nice so we all love ’em. But…

I saw some movies of the 60s and 80s recently on a few rainy nights while on holiday w friends. I sighed seeing the happy cocky creative freedom balls of those two decades. Go watch Starstruck (1982) starting Jo Kennedy, and Desperately Seeking Susan….Hard Day’s NIght w the Beatles… Visconti’s The Leopard (1963)…..I don’t know. Thank god for London and Belgian street fashionistas, I suppose.

There is a sadness when people are clearly hurting and issue-ridden like Amanda B. But otherwise, jesus, let a person redefine themselves any way she/he likes. Kelley Osbourne with her purple hair (career choice) for example. Hell yeah, I’ll smirk at an image choice or giggle at try-hards, but I’m still thinking, “hey, at least you tried SOMETHING.” I don’t assume they are crazy. Lady Gaga? Madge? Katy Perry? Lock ’em all up because they aren’t THE SAME? Elton John? Donald Trump with his hair? And oh my god, Tilda, lock up Tilda?

Ryder still hasn’t worn all her new clothes? So check the Ecclestone girls: are all their tags snipped off in their 50 closets? Shall we go look? Should the Enq write a piece questioning the sanity of women who think is it OKAY to wear Marchesa skating dresses for every red carpet?

I am not a particular fan follower of WR. She may be in her own special world. I am just saying…a bit of yeesh on the Enq’s story. Maybe they should have retitled it to read something more like: “Winona Ryder still does not look as blonde, tanned, smug and tweaked as Our Source, Who Kindly Lets Her Staff Take Home Gluten-rich Leftovers and Very Old Shoes.”

(And she is allowed to shoots sparks on an old grudge if she wants. Grudges are not my thing, but a friend’s 95 year old great-aunt can still go to town on the girl who tried to steal her late husband at a dance party 78 years ago, and she enjoys telling the story and snarking. So whatever! They’re still catching old mobsters so, hey, watch out, Gwyneth, WR’s BAAAAACK!)

      • Prettylights says:

Love that Advanced Style website – how fabulous! Thanks for the link 🙂 I’ve loved Winona ever since I saw her in Mermaids when I was around 10, I was just taken by her beauty and her acting. I continue to be a big fan of hers and am happy she’s doing her own thing.

      • Crumpets & Crotchshots says:

        +1000

Fake highlights, fake tan, fake nails, fake boobs…. And all of it the same. Ugh.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

      Wino Forever, glorious eccentricities included.

I bet she IS trash-talking Depp and Goop, and I love her for it.

*sigh* Will she ever make a REAL comeback? I miss her so much..she was amazingly creepy in Black Swan.

      • Noodles says:

I hope she does. I watched Girl, Interrupted the other night and she’s just great. And beautiful.

I think she needs the right part to come back and it will make her a star (again). Preferably something a bit dark…she does well in that genre.

      • Itsa Reallyme says:

Yes, her comeback is long overdue.

  3. Original A says:

Winona has been dating the same guy for a while now, so no.

  4. Nikollet says:

Anyone who throws shade on vapid Gwyneth is alright by me.

She seems bat-sh*t crazy, but love her for it!

  5. silken_floss says:

    I still love her. Don’t care 🙂

  6. HH says:

In all fairness, who isn’t trash-talking GOOP right now?

    • greenmonster says:

Just what I was thinking: isn’t everyone trash-talking Gwyneth Paltrow and Johnny Depp?

I never cared about Gwyneth but when she won the Oscar for “Shakespeare in Love” my dislike began… I don’t think her acting deserved an Oscar and that pink mess she was wearing plus the cry-baby act – for heavens sake. So Winona, please go on and say whatever comes to your mind.

      • Tapioca says:

It was the crying-without-producing-a-single-tear that made me laugh – never a faker display of emotion has ever been seen.

They should have made her give the Oscar straight back for that performance!

    • It'sJustBlanche says:

Yes! Just think about much we dislike Gwennie and we don’t even have a history with her (unless you count having to sit through a couple of her sucky movies).

  7. Arock says:

Winona- Helen bonham carter only works for Helen bonham carter.

    P.s. loved ya in heathers.

  8. rianic says:

Don’t we all make fun of the Goop?

    Love her!!!!

    • mango says:

Sparkles – would that be a reasonable scandal?

      • Nikollet says:

That would be awesome. Kristen would be livid.

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

Why do people keep trying to ship her with dudes half her age (don’t worry I will never use the term “ship” again)??

I’d love to see her with Crispin Glover-like two unconventional stars colliding to form a supernova of bizarre.

      • Cidee says:

I want her to date an older, well-established actor or musician. The ONLY reason I like Calista Flockhart is because she’s with Harrison Ford. Since I love Winona already, pairing her with someone fabulous would just heighten her likeability.

  9. Annie says:

How is online shopping sooo bizarre? I have a bunch of clothes I bought that still have the tags on, simply because I haven’t worn them yet, so what? So long as she’s not out stealing clothes anymore, it’s her money and she can buy as many clothes as she wants.

And dying her hair white blonde? Anne Hathaway did that recently and nobody said she’d gone batshit. And surely everyone here must be batshit if making fun of Goop makes one so.

I think Winona’s always had her reclusive phases too.

  10. Willa says:

    Wino forever!

  11. mkyarwood says:

It’s okay Wino, you’ve earned a little trash talking against those idiots. One nearly ruined your career (and you would have been WAY BETTER as Violet)and the other got you hooked on pills. Shine on!

    • Collar says:

Not taking sides between GP and WR because they are both just the worst. One with the snobbery, the other with the thrill seeking thievery, over lapping relationships etc etc. But how on earth can Winona have beef about a film role that she hadnt signed for yet? I get a little jealousy but geez how can you hold a 20 year old grudge over a job that wasnt even yours yet??? Yikes!

      • CC says:

I think it’s the betrayal, not the job, and it would sour me on someone forever true, if something like that happened. It’s not as if GP and WR started in the same way – GP is a spoiled-brat benefactor of intense connections, family and otherwise (Douglas, Danner, Paltrow, ‘Uncle Mort’) beyond the obvious nepotism.

And GP sucks – the GOOP b.s. I think WR would likely react to is a nasty, NASTY post on schadenfreude – where GP made it really effing clear that she reveled in WR’s arrest and problems.

GP was a total asshole to her. And the stories about Depp getting her into drugs…he’s one, too. He kept his mess together during most of his partnership with Paradis, but he was a room-destroying thuggish guy beginning with River Phoenix/Viper Room days, on forward (Google it, younguns!).

      • Carol says:

I always have to laugh at this. GP STOLE Winona’s script – yes, there was only one script for Shakespeare in Love in existence. It was like the Golden Ticket in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. GOOP found it, stole it, and was given the part solely because she arrived with it. She scratched out Winona’s name in Sharpie marker and wrote “Property of Gwyneth who is playing the female lead” and that is how she got the part. Winona tried chasing her down, but the security guard and the movie director just shrugged and said, “We had to give the part to GP. The script had her name on it.”

      • StaCat1 says:

Well GP also cozied up to her “buddy” harvey. let’s not forget that!

Cate Blanchett deserved the Oscar that year for Elizabeth! It was a joke that GP won.
The Miramax campaign was effective..but her “acting” in that film was not even worth a nomination.

      • Emma - the JP Lover says:

@StaCat1, who wrote: “Cate Blanchett deserved the Oscar that year for Elizabeth! It was a joke that GP won.
The Miramax campaign was effective..but her “acting” in that film was not even worth a nomination.”

Yes! Cate Blanchett ‘really’ deserved an Oscar. Her performance in “Elizabeth” was magnificent. 🙂

  12. ReelChildofHell says:

Love her & glad she’s back! I would much rather chill out with a neurotic shut-in than a pretentious twat. Winona Forevah!

  13. sqs says:

    Team Winona.

  14. Kerfuffles says:

Jeebus–this Enquirer article is downright misogynistic. Yeah, Winona seems eccentric. So does Johnny Depp. So do 99% of the people in Hollywood.

So Winona Ryder wants to online shop and experiment with her hair color and stay in more. Are these really character flaws or signs of dementia?!

I agree in some pics last year at media events she had some serious “crazy eyes” going on. But she seemed MUCH more relaxed-/and downright gorgeous–in movie premier pics this year.

I hope she’s overcome *whatever* it was that made her eyes look so scared/upset/crazy in former pictures.

    • MademoiselleRose says:

Agreed. I must be a weirdo too. I online shop for my clothes, cos well, I find better stuff on the internet, and a lot of them I haven’t worn yet either. I dye my hair blonde – wow, that’s really weird. I don’t go out if I don’t have to. I like my own company and have heaps to do at home, never bored. Can’t say as I much like people these days either, rude, pushy with no manners or courtesy. Good reason to stay home.

I think she’s great. She still looks beautiful and I like her films. I’m all for her coming back.

    • commonsense says:

that’s me most every night..sheesh..call crazy cops huh????

  15. The Wizz says:

As long as she’s online shopping she cant be nicking anything….

    • CC says:

I hate that the jokes will never go away. She had psychological and drug problems, and didn’t attempt to manipulate anything legally or otherwise after. I’m not picking on you – it’s just, Of Course this sentiment will pop up.

  16. poppy says:

non-story, for her publicity or goops.
she’s been a hermit for a long time now, admittedly so.
if she’s talking smack @ depp and goopers, team winona.
maybe the falling out with goop has more to do with matt damon/minnie driver than shakespeare in love and the fact paltry has always been a climber/user, hence goopster coming out first with the “reason” for their break-up? seems likely she was talking smack @ winona, was finished with her and brad pitt and ready to move on to damon/affleck and all things british -what goopers considered bigger and better things. at the time there was some story about both ladies and jay k/jamiroquai that coincided conveniently. also, wasn’t goop a covert coke head and didn’t think it would be prudent to associate with someone with an obvious pill problem?
someone needs to work it out for me because i think it is MUCH more than just script stealing.

winona really got around in her day. didn’t she bag every lead singer from every alt rock band as well as her co-stars? i think she even had a little daniel day lewis? unfortunately the interwebs was only in its infancy or the gossip would have been off the charts outrageous.
winona transitioned well from child star to adult but the crazy was always strong in that one.

    • dj says:

Poppy is on point! Winona has had issues most of the time… she was raised in a commune. I did a paper on her in grad school lots of issues. I would love to know the real story with her and Goop. It seems that Wino never really held grudges before or since…I think WR has her reasons. Plus, she was the queen of partnering with lead singers (I mean that in a good way)! K Stew wishes she was as alternative as WR once was.

  17. All Mark says:

I like the explanation of how big she was in the 90s. I agree, but I think Winona had sort of an indie/alternative cred that people like Selena Gomez or K Stew don’t. Those modern girls are mainstream. Sure we all saw “reality bites” “pump up the volume” “heathers” but Winona’s flicks all fit into that alternative/indie vibe (which was a bigger deal then, for sure).

    • Bored suburbanhousewife says:

When Winona was the it girl, she was cast in many big Hollywood movies like Little Women and Age of Innocence. I am a fan, but she was very wrong for the part of May in Age of Innocence. I also thinks its possible she would have been miscast in Shakespeare and that, annoying as she is, Paltrow was abetter fit for the role. I wonder if Goop could truly “steal ” a role if producers thought Ryder or another actress was the ideal choice. Winona was always best in alt/Indy/quirky roles.

Also I read somewhere her natural hair color is blond but they died her hair & eyebrows dark brown to emphasis her pale skin. The blog suggested her hippie parents pushed her into acting to use her as- meal ticket & she was further. Damaged by the callous behavior of Depp & Christian Slater.

      • d says:

Totally, totally agree with everything said here.
Betrayals by friends can be hard to get over too. I get why she might still be trash talking someone like Gwyneth. It’s not healthy and you have to forgive obviously, but sometimes like a little splinter you never get out unfortunately. Me, a friend betrayed my trust and while I forgave her and understand it all, we will never be friends again. I just don’t want her in my life. These two are in the same biz and WR maybe finds it hard to “get away” from GP. I like WR for her faults and all. She doesn’t present as perfect. She’s flawed. That makes her interesting. GP always presents as perfect. And it’s laughable.
There was a hilarious segment from a show a while back about researching your ancestors/genealogy (“Who Do You Think You Are”) where GP was discovering some of her ancestors, including one who had been a servant of some kind and the look on her face was priceless. I totally LOLd. So I’m on WR’s side, no matter how cuckoo she may or may not be. I say leave her alone…I think she got a raw deal. She may be responsible for some of her misfortune but surely not all.

  18. Kaye says:

Matt Damon seems like such a class act. Did he really dump Minnie Driver like that? I never did know the real story.

    • pwal says:

I didn’t know that Damon made a bee-line to Ryder, but I do remember him discussing his break-up with Oprah before letting Minnie in on it.

From that point on, I side-eye Damon because he seemed to be all about Damon, despite the non-threatening boy next door facade.

    • JennJ says:

I think that the truth is more grey. At the time I believed Minnie, but I think that they had had some sort of breakup talk and it was more vague than it should have been. He thought that they broke up, she thought that they were discussing things.

    • MegK says:

Minnie Driver admitted years ago that she just made up that story because she was mad at Matt. He DID mention on Oprah that they weren’t together any more, but it was well after the two of them split.

    • Melissa says:

No – they were broken up and she lied about finding out about it on Oprah to be a nasty bitch. I’ve never liked her.

  19. Gia says:

I loved the movie Reality Bites, but Wynona is a total mess and I’m not a fan of her crazy. And don’t mess with my G!!

  20. Dedrie says:

Hyperthyroidism caused by medications for other conditions or recreational purposes .. perhaps Graves Disease.

  21. Sal says:

Another probably false Enquirer story. Ugh. This is embarrassing.

  22. annaloo. says:

You know this was the FIRST story I clicked on!!! Can’t stand the Goop!!!

  23. Meggin says:

I think she is beautiful (not in that first picture) but normally yes. She has an eccentric beauty which is more interesting IMO. Boring blondes get redundant in Hollywood

  24. JJ says:

I think she is a talented actress, but I also believe she is a very disturbed person.

  25. truthful says:

I can’t help it, the girl has some good acting chops, LOVE her.

  26. A says:

She always stretch out her eyes like that to make them look bigger, she’s even admitted to it. “I always do that thing with my eyes…”.

it’s the big brown eyes effect she’s infamous for.

    • rianic says:

Sometimes I do that. Normally, I squint my eyes terribly when I smile, so I’ll try to counteract that and end up looking bug eyed.

  27. hannah says:

That blog entry on Goop four years ago was horrible. Gwyneth basically said that she used to have a best friend who was really jealous of her and then something horrible happened to the friend (the shoplifting scandal) and Gwyneth was glad about it, cause that’s karma. When I read it at the time I actually remember thinking ‘jeez, it’s been years. Why write a blog entry about a frenemy from years ago?’. I’ve also had a nasty “breakup” with a female friend or two in the past and it stings a lot, but why try to take a stab at the person years after the fact?

    • Bridget says:

I don’t know… I always thought Lainey had a point when she guessed that GOOP was actually talking about Madonna, not Winona. It makes way more sense.

  28. poiup says:

Oh these ages, Vanessa Paradis was stunning when she was young but I thought she was a decade older than 40 now. Winona should be proud she’s got that beat, looking good at 41 – at least in 2nd and 3rd pic lol.

  29. lenje says:

I want Winona to chop her hair ala Posh/Katie Holmes (during her earlier years with Tom Cruise). It looks so much better on her than the other two, and short hair suits petite figures.

  30. Ginger says:

I still like Winona although I was never convinced that she was all that great of an actress but she was certainly better than Gwynnie. I completely believe that she stole the part from Wino. I will never get over her winning the Oscar and stealing it from Cate Blanchett. So, if Winona wants to talk trash I’m all for it! And agreed that she’s speaking the truth about Johnny’s mid life crisis. However, Winona should probably still get a little shade for her shoplifting. I recall very well her whole relationship scandal with Matt Damon. But she’s only 3 years younger than I am. She must be a vampire because she looks nowhere near 40. Or perhaps she’s had some subtle work done?

  31. Nicolette says:

That first picture is too much! But she looks beautiful in the third. I’ve always liked her and hope the story of her becoming a recluse and acting all loopy aren’t true.

  32. Chutzpah says:

If I was Winona, not only would I talk trash about Paltrow dusk to dawn, I would also invest in technology so that after I died I could be reanimated to continue talking trash!

  33. Lucinda says:

All I can say is she’s baaackk!!! If Enquirer needs to write smack about her, she’s on people’s radar again. So happy!

  34. elle224 says:

I love Winona so much! gah, she’s so pretty!

  35. serena says:

Well Johnny deserves some bashing for that Amber Head thing.

  36. Chordy says:

Us weird girls need role models too! Wino Forever!

  37. Mandy says:

    Vampire! Love me some WINO.

  38. Andrea says:

    Wino Forevah!

  39. mar says:

is it weird to say that her and I have SO much in common right now!!

  40. Denise says:

She looks amazing in the last photo. Those eyes, when not looking a bit nuts as in the first photo, are the absolute most gorgeous. And the cheeks and lips. A classic, exquisite beauty still.

The Enquirer article seems like such rubbish. Imagine! From the Enquirer! I could have written that based on stuff we all know about her. Probably true, but such bitchy, gossipy crap from the bottom of the barrel.

  41. Ron says:

Everyone, and I mean everyone, talks smack about Gwyennie. She invites it with all of her vapid comments about needing $1200 shoes and $750 t shirts and organic tea raised in baby lamb crap. I used to go the same place that Winona worked out years ago and she was always pretty friendly.

  42. BorgQueen says:

I used to LOVE Winona Ryder. I didnt read anyone else’s comment yet bc I needed to put this out there. Another reason why she is so bitter about Johnny Depp. She got hurt (I dont remember how but it was by his hands – maybe he threw a lamp or she got pushed thru a window). Suffice it to say, she was so badly hurt that she had to pain pills during her recovery which led her to a pill addiction and downward spiral.

  43. Emily C. says:

Good for Winona. It’s about time actors started calling each other out on the crap they pull. The housekeeper thing’s a tad strange if it’s true, but it’s not at all harmful to anyone.

  44. I Choose Me says:

Pffft. The Enquirer is really reaching with this story.

  45. angee says:

She’s one of the most beautiful women ever. Besides that, I hope she does come back in a bigger way and does some GREAT acting. I think she’s got it in her.

  46. ThruRoseColouredGlasses says:

Quick Quotes from the Daily Mail back in 2009:

‘This person really did what they could to hurt me. I was deeply upset, I was angry, I was all of those things you feel when you find out that someone you thought you liked was venomous and dangerous.

Former flame: Paltrow with ex-boyfriend Ben Affleck at a 1999 post-Oscars party
‘I restrained myself from fighting back. I tried to take the high road. But one day I heard that something unfortunate and humiliating had happened to this person. And my reaction was deep relief and happiness.’

In her blog Paltrow raises the subject as an example of what she calls the ‘evil tongue’ – gossiping about other people. She asks why people take pleasure in learning of the downfall of others.

Another star who might be the ‘frenemy’ is Jennifer Lopez, who got engaged to Affleck after his split from Paltrow.
In a magazine interview the Latina singer/actress said she could not remember any of Paltrow’s films.
Afterwards Paltrow, whose husband is British rock star Chris Martin of Coldplay, said: ‘I do not want to be married for six months and then say, “Oh well, never mind, on to No2”,’ – an apparent reference to Lopez’s brief marriages to Cuban waiter Ojani Noa and dancer Cris Judd.

Her spokesman said: ‘She did not write this to name names but to share a lesson she learned.’

  47. JM says:

GOOP may have won the Oscar, but Winona can out act her any day and will be remembered for an incredible body of work. Lucas, Beetlejuice, Heathers, Mermaids, Reality Bites, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Great Balls of Fire and the list goes on. She’s beautiful and eccentric and I’d love to see her with someone we’d never expect. Is Liam Neeson still single?

  48. Daphne says:

I am rooting for Winona Ryder to make a comeback. I was a big fan back in the day. I loved her in Heathers.

  49. Bridget says:

Dislike GOOP all you want (personally, I just dont think she’s worth the effort) but really, she STOLE the script for Shakespeare in Love? Like G wouldn’t have had access to any mid-90s Miramax script that she wanted? She and Harvey were tight, she was apparently successful as Emma, she would have easily gotten an audition for SIL. And honestly, she was good in the movie – when you take away the GOOP, the pink dress, the crying, she really was the heartbeat of that movie. Was she better than Cate Blanchett? Not really, but she had the benefit of being in a far superior movie (Elizabeth didnt age well). And Winona was definitely already starting to unravel at that point.

    • Bridget says:

Also, I miss Winona. There hasnt been a movie star like her in a long time – that face, the boyfriends, the fantastic movies – she managed to appear both fabulously beautiful and effortlessly cool.

  50. Dirty Martini says:

Count me in on the “love her” ledger. THis woman has a gorgeous face with cheekbones that could cut diamonds.

    Or goop.

  51. Claudia says:

She’s right about Depp. Soooo predictable!

  52. erin says:

If she’s talking smack about Johnny, which is doubtful, she should be ashamed. He’s one of the very few who took up for her, when her shoplifting trial made her a laughingstock. He has never talked bad about any of his girlfriends. Also, it was well known that Winona was cheating on him, with her co-stars, when they broke up. He was filming Gilbert Grape in Texas at the time, and was so depressed he stayed with friends in Texas for months after filming ended. As for him breaking up with Paradis, the details are unknown and what is printed is just gossip. She seemed desperate to get to Paris and has spent most of her time there since they broke up. The kids are in L.A. with Johnny. That relationship had been dead for several years. He’s a super nice guy.

  53. Flounder says:

    Love her. Team Winona.

  54. meaghan says:

i don’t know about any of this. I met her in los angeles one night at a party , and she was very lovely and approachable. she even introduced me to the people she was with, and invited me along with them.

  55. Puleeeez says:

Geez. With “friends” like this faux b!tch, who needs enemies? What kinda scum phony talks this much BS about her dear “friend”?
    Loser jealous douchetool.
    🙂

  56. Trent says:

I think the Johnny Depp part is b.s.

Also, Gwyneth found out about the role in “Shakespeare in Love” because Winona had the script and was up for it, and then Gwyneth went out and got an audition.

I met Winona through work in 2006, and though she was pretty flighty, she was down to earth and personable. I can picture her being antisocial, but not really a flat-out bitch.

  57. Romo says:

I don’t think she could do anything to make me love her less. And since when do we believe anything the Enquirer has to say! I too, hope she has a legit comeback one day. She has more talent in her teeny, petite pinky finger than most actresses today. She was, is and always will be a classy, ageless beauty.

  58. Jo March says:

she was AMAZING as May Welland in Scorsese’s _Age of Innocence_ and she also deserves high praise for her turn as Jo March in _Little Women_. In fact if memory serves she was responsible for getting that film made. I remember well when she was on top of the world in the 1990s–the darling of the era. What has become of her says more about our culture(‘s ageism and sexism) than it does about her.

  59. A says:

I want to see her new hair!!
White? Sounds interesting and if anything it will bring out her eyes even more.

  60. Noelle says:

If you grew up in the 90’s you loved Winona Ryder. She was classic in Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, and Mermaids. She may be quirkly, but add her to the pile of people in Hollywood who are. She’s a helluva lot more interesting than a lot of the vapid clowns making their way onto the scene. MORE WINONA!

  61. Fret says:

Oh puh-lease! Enough with the whole pitting the two actresses against each other! They were friends at one time. Leave it at that. Just remember the good times.

And for the people who are saying Winona has crazy eyes—Get in front of a mirror at look at your own face and feel the disappointment! That’s why you have to say something bad about someone else is because you are not satisfied with how you look.

One last thing, this story originated from The National Enquirer. Anybody who believes what that rag prints is a freakin idiot!!!

  62. Lucy Goosey says:

I can understand her being pissed at both. (As well as just finding Gwyneth generally unpleasant and annoying.) Thank God I never have to invite any of the three to my house!

Meanwhile, I don’t really get the Johnny Depp/Amber Heard hate. It is like he is the first actor or first man in recorded human history to take up with a hot young woman as soon as he got a bit of money. The backlash against him as an actor is also baffling. I would much rather watch him be weird than watch (insert young actor here)be boring.

  63. Ceebee says:

    Typo

  64. Ceebee says:

Love love love Winona! Forever beautiful and talented, please bring her back to the screen. And bravo, lol if she’s throwing shade at Goop and Johnny Depp Hefner. Who the hell isn’t? They’re ridiculous.

  65. Mitch Buchanan Rocks! says:

Far better actress than ole Goop – I’m surprised if WR doesn’t have an oscar.

On youtube discovered Mermaids, with Cher and Christina ricci

  66. CassT says:

    What happened to her career?

    • Marcus says:

      Hey Cass,

I know her career went down sometime ago. The last time I saw her she starred opposite Angelina Jolie.

  67. chalkdustgirl says:

Team Winona, all the way. She had and always will have more talent in one strand of her hair than Goopy has in her entire body.

  68. Claire says:

Loved her and Johnny together. I was never sure she was the best actress some of her movies were so good and she fitted the roles so perfectly that I loved her anyway. Heathers was so good!
