Ben Affleck in talks for lead role in David Fincher adaptation of ‘Gone Girl’

Over Christmas 2012, I became engrossed with the bestseller Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. If you haven’t read it, I highly recommend it. It’s not a breezy, easy book, but it’s immensely readable and you will probably be able to get through in a weekend. I’m not even going to try to summarize the twists and turns and spoilers, but the basic plot is that a pretty blonde wife goes “missing” on her fifth anniversary and her husband quickly becomes the main suspect in her disappearance. Last year, Fox bought the rights to the book for a film adaptation, and I don’t have a problem with that at all – it will make a good movie, especially if they make it R-rated. David Fincher has already signed on to direct, which gives me even more hope that the film will be faithful to the book, because Fincher won’t pull his punches with the story at all. And now comes this interesting news… Ben Affleck is in negotiations to play the lead character, the husband suspected of having something to do with his wife’s disappearance:

Ben Affleck is in negotiations to play the lead role in David Fincher‘s Gone Girl, a development that will seal the Fox project pic as Fincher’s next film to direct. In the pic, based on the Gillian Flynn bestseller, Affleck will play a husband whose wife disappears on the day of their fifth anniversary, and all roads point to him as the killer.

Fox made a 7-figure deal for the novel last July for Pacific Standard’s Reese Witherspoon and Bruna Papandrea, along with Leslie Dixon, to produce. Flynn wrote the first draft of the screenplay. There is no female lead yet as it looks like Witherspoon is only producing. Fox recently brought on New Regency as a financing partner.

Affleck’s casting is interesting because it means Warner Bros is allowing him to push back his next directing and starring project, the adaptation of the Dennis Lahane novel Live By Night, which he continues to prep. Shooting on Gone Girl is set to shoot this fall, and the thinking is Affleck will be able to finish up and still get Live By Night done for the end of 2014.

I’m hearing that Affleck reached out to Warner Bros’ brass over the Fourth of July holiday, and the studio behind his Oscar-winner Argo made a fast and concerted effort to give him a quick answer and let him do something it didn’t stand to gain from. All this certainly signals that Warner Bros and Affleck plan to be in business together for the long haul, a relationship the studio was keen to preserve especially following the departure of Jeff Robinov, the just-exited former President of Warner Bros Pictures Group with whom Affleck had a “dream relationship”.

The studio had wasted little time setting Affleck’s follow-up to Best Picture Oscar winner Argo, beginning pre-production in May on Live By Night, about a black-sheep son of a police captain who gets involved in escalating levels of organized crime. Affleck is also producing as he did with Argo.

Fincher and Fox had been developing Gone Girl since since January. This is now his next project, ahead of Disney’s 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea: Captain Nemo.

[From Deadline]

Will Ben make a good Nick? Nick is described as being very handsome and boyish, with black hair and Irish features. As far as looks go, I always saw Nick as more of a Colin Farrell type, and with Colin’s build too. I didn’t think Nick was supposed to be BIG like Ben. And Nick is supposed to be several years younger than his wife too – Ben is kind of too old to play Nick as written. I’m being nitpicky, I know. In all honesty, the idea of Ben in this kind of role is intriguing, and I’m glad he’s not directing because he would turn the film into “Nick’s story” and it’s really not.

Interestingly enough, there has been a lot of talk about which blonde actress should be cast as “Amazing Amy”. In the book, Amy is described as petite, blonde, well-educated, highly intelligent and beautiful. There also needs to be an air about her of… condescension. Judgment. Snottiness. And there’s been a lot of talk that Gwyneth Paltrow should play Amy. So… will Gwyneth and Ben reunite on-screen once again? Wouldn’t that be epic? Alas, I think that by casting Ben as Nick, they’ve made it sort of impossible for Fincher to cast Goop. Too bad. I would have actually been interested in seeing Goop’s version of Amazing Amy. They’ll probably go with Jessica Chastain or somebody like that. I would actually be interested in seeing Angelina Jolie (in a blonde wig) try it out.

Isn’t Amy supposed to be sort of petite? I haven’t read it in a while. I was thinking Reese W. for the role of Amy.

    • atrain says:

Months ago, when I first heard it was becoming a movie, Reese’s name was attached to it. Like she was planning on producing and starring in it or something. I think she’d be good.

    • Tiffany :) says:

Reese is producing it, but I think she would be perfect as Amy. We all know that she has some, um, sass in there. 😉

I don’t think Gwen could handle the transition. She is too hauty and I don’t think she could tap into the darker side very well.

  2. taxi says:

Tilda? Kristen Scott Thomas? Diane Kruger?

I don’t know the book – just thinking of smart women who can convincingly condescend.

  3. lisa2 says:

I am a Fincher fan.. I like Ben as a director but not as an Actor.

  4. Original A says:

Ugh. Goop would have been perfect, and Ben is all wrong for Nick. Reese or Jessica would work well, or maybe Naomi.

  5. danielle says:

All of the people mentioned are too old, i think, including ben. I pictured these people as late 20sfor to mid 30s. Paltrow would be interesting tho. I’d like to see her act out some rage, show some range.

    • Esmom says:

Exactly what I was going to say. Although I guess they could just make the executive decision to bump up the characters’ ages and it wouldn’t affect the story in any real way.

I hadn’t considered Tilda but I think she’d be brilliant. I just saw We Need To Talk About Kevin and she blew me away. Gone Girl has a similar creepiness that I’d bet she could nail.

Also, I’d heard that Reese really wants the role of Amy.

    • YuYa says:

Nick in the book is 34 and Amy is 39. Amy being 39 is a huge part of the book and an actress in her 20’s wouldn’t work at all. Ben is too old to play Nick. The actress has to be older than the actor in this role.

    • Ellen says:

Yes, these guys are all too old, and there are a bunch of half-famous late-twenty-something actors who really deserve a shot/would be better cast for these parts.

I suppose this is part of the problem with Hollywood these days: you need big name actors to green-light mid-budget dramas. Blergh.

      • tracking says:

Ellen, I see what you’re saying, but I’m hoping Fincher +blockbuster book means they can take a few chances (like with Mara for GWTDT). We can hope, right?

    • Tiffany :) says:

I think Ryan Gosling and Reese would be perfect.

I think Tilda is an AMAZING actress, but she doesn’t fit the “America’s Sweetheart” stereotype that the news media quickly turns Amy into.

  6. Tapioca says:

Amy Adams! As soon as I heard DF had signed on I got all excited as it’s perfect for him.

Or maybe Rooney Mara, so they can continue their clandestine affair and we can have another round of interviews heaped with gilded pretension?

    • nicole says:

I agree with Amy Adams! We read this in my book club and thought Amy Adams would be perfect for the sort of range was needed!

    • LucyS says:

I thought Amy Adams too. She has the perfect mix of perky and tough that I think Amazing Amy needs.

As long as it’s not Reese.

    • Bijlee says:

Exactly what I was thinking! Amy Adams sounds perfect and she even shares the name. Easy!

      • dj says:

Amy Adams would be perfect!!! She could play adorable and smart. OMG. Please, please, please, no Goop. I have not loved a book like this since Memoirs of a Geisha. I highly recommend reading this book especially before it becomes a movie.

  7. oblivious says:

Ooh, Diane Kruger! I love her! I can’t see them having chemistry for some reason though.

    • LadyMTL says:

ITA, I can totally see Diane Kruger as the female lead. Ben Affleck tho…meh. I remember reading the book and thinking that Colin Farrell would be perfect for the role but he might not be considered mainstream enough these days.

    • Chordy says:

Here’s a thought…DIANE AND JOSH! It would be such an interesting, dark way for them to work together. They would already have that “married” chemistry, but they could have some fun with the dynamic as well.

  8. MAP says:

Isn’t he a great choice, because Nick in the book is a compromised character who you end up rooting for anyway? Doesn’t that sound like someone Ben is tailor-made to play?

    • littlestar says:

I agree with what you said! Ben totally fits that likeable American Irish type that I saw nick as when I read the book (a year ago actually – cant believe how time flies!). I’m not a Ben fan, but I actually think he’d be perfect for the Nick part! As for Amy, no clue. Goop would make it interesting lol :).

  9. Anna says:

I can totally see Reese in that role. I actually thought of her before GOOP.

    • HappyMom says:

This-because she’s such a dislikable character in the book: Reese is perfect.

  10. lisa says:

ben is believable as someone who may kill his wife

    • endoplasmic_ridiculum says:

I couldn’t help myself. You’re comment made me burst out laughing.

  11. Steph says:

Reese Witherspoon was to play Amy last I heard (she optioned the book and brought on Fincher). Amy Adams was going to play the main character in Dark Places, but dropped out according to IMDB (which stinks bc she PERFECT for the role).

    • Andrea says:

I hate that Amy Adams dropped out of Dark Places!

Honestly she’d be better in Gone Girl than Reese would. Adams could play crazy more convincingly.

      • Irishae says:

I’ve read all of Gillian’s books and Dark Places was my favorite. I imagined Amy Adams several times as Libby so was also disappointed when she dropped out.

Charlize Theron seems to be the most recent replacement (according to IMDB and a google search). While I’m a huge Charlize fan…are they going to CGI her 2 feet shorter? Use crazy makeup like in Monster? Visually a terrible choice.

I think Chloe Grace Moretz as Diondra is close to perfect. Evan Rachel Wood would have been my first choice, but she’s too old. They have Nicholas Hoult playing Lyle and I approve of that. I wonder who will be cast as Ben?

      • Tiffany :) says:

Dark Places was my favorite too! Love the casting ideas you mentioned!

  12. Cece says:

Big fan of the book, and Ben is just fine for the role – he may be a bit on the older side, but the age of the characters was not an important aspect of the story. And besides, all movies are interpretations of the book.

    • Andrea says:

Actually I think the fact that Amy is older than Nick is pretty important. It’s part of their power struggle.

      • YuYa says:

I agree, Amy being older was a key part of the story. But, hollywood will probably screw it up and the movie wont have as much impact.

      • Cece says:

So cast someone older than Ben. Also, he can look quite young with make-up, etc.

      • littlestar says:

They can make Ben look young with makeup and computer effects :).

  13. Lucretia says:

In the book, Nick is 34 and Amy is 39, and the fact that she is older is an important part of her psyche. The 3 actresses being supposedly considered (Natalie P, Emily Blunt, and Charlize Theron) are all from 10 to 3 years younger.
I don’t really like Ben for this role; I think he is better as a director.

    • Andrea says:

Yup. That’s what I just said. It’s actually imperative that Amy is older than Nick.

    • Bijlee says:

Which is why Amy Adams should take it.

For goodness’s sake not Nat or Charlize. Maybe Emily because she looks older. But I still prefer Amy. She’s the right age. She’s talented. She’s petite, smart, and beautiful. And she could do the judgy, condescending thing if she wanted. She’s just perfect.

  14. hels says:

    Everyone’s too old.

  15. Bopit says:

I loved the book and was so engrossed in it until the last chapter. Sweet Jesus did the end ruin the book for me. HATED the ending.

    • Esmom says:

I hated the ending at first, too, but over time it’s grown on me. I really can’t imagine any other ending.

      • Falula says:

I hated the end, too, but after reading Flynn’s other novels I appreciated it a bit more. Hard to explain without spoilers but it made more sense to me considering the vibe that all of Flynn’s books have.

I actually liked both Dark Places and Sharp Objects better than Gone Girl.

    • HappyMom says:

Really? I thought it fit with how twisted the rest of the book is.

    • CG says:

I actually had major problems with the entire second half. I mean, I still thought the book was entertaining, but it went so off the rails. Dont even get me started on the Ozarks robbery. That part made me want to tear my hair out!

    • Zigggy says:

I agree- I was SO incredibly dissatisfied with the ending!

    • L says:

Yup. Said the same thing below.

First half was super interesting. Second half was slower but I thought there would be a great payout. Last 3 chapters (ending) sucked. Ruined the rest of the book for me.

  16. lamamu says:

Ben A is perfect for the role of Nick: kind of a blah good looking lump. When I was reading, I always saw Charlize Theron. I know she’s not petite, etc, but she’s my Amy nonetheless. And she would rock as Amy.

  17. Esti says:

I just don’t think he’s a good enough actor for a role like this. I wish he would stick to directing.

I thought either Reese or Natalie Portman would have been perfect as Amy, but apparently Reese decided not to do it and Natalie has already turned it down. I like Tapioca’s suggestion of Amy Adams, I could see that.

  18. L says:

Liked the book until the last 3 chapters. Weekend of my life I’m never getting back.

I think Paltrow doesn’t have the verve that Amy is described as having. Reese is to cheerleader peppy/preppy-amy’s a girl that grew up as the messed up child of children’s authors after all. I could see Amy Adams, Diane Kruger, or Charlize Theron.

They need someone a little more naive for Nick than Ben Affleck. Same goes for Colin Farrell. And isn’t nick supposed to be a good ole’ midwestern boy anyway?

  19. Liz says:

Love to see Rachel McAdams opposite Ben. Would not go see the flick if Gweneth is in it.

    • Lisa says:

Took the words right out of my mouth!

    • Chordy says:

I honestly think Rachel McAdams could do anything, and she automatically raises the quality of every project she’s in. Which is good because a lot of her projects of late need the boost (how many time warping romantic melodramas can one woman fit into a career?)

    • Becky1 says:

Rachel McAdams would be great in that role!

I think Ben will be good as Nick. Yeah, he’s older than the character in the book but they can bump up the ages a little bit-it would still work. He looks young enough that he can still play mid to late 30’s if they get rid of the grey in his hair. Plus, Nick was a bit of a sleaze-charming but a little sleazy-I can see Ben playing that very well.

  20. tracking says:

I would love to see Alison Brie in this part. She is so talented and would give the role dimension (I feel like I can already see the schtick Theron, Adams, Witherspoon etc. would throw down, and not in a good way). Would love someone fresh, and who has a good look for younger and older Amy.

    • Esmom says:

Great idea, she is awesome. And while we’re on the MM casting, maybe Vincent Kartheiser as Nick? He is so amazing on MM that I’d love to see him sink his teeth into something so different. And he’s the right age, I think.

      • tracking says:

Though I love him, not sure he’s conventionally handsome enough. I was thinking Christian Bale would fit the dark good looks in the book and obviously a much better actor than Affleck.

      • Esmom says:

@tracking, I hear you although I’m guessing VK could look pretty handsome if need be. We’re (or I’m at least) used to seeing him in MM with his shaved back hairline and other makeup tricks to add to his aging and smarminess. It would nice to see him as a regular guy like Nick.

  21. Merritt says:

Charlize Theron is who I pictured as I read it. Although I think Amy Adams would work too. Whoever plays Nick needs to be decent looking but also look like a douche. So Ben fits that.

  22. kk2 says:

I heard reese w had already signed on? I like her for the part- Amy is almost a grownup version of her character in Election. I think people are overreacting about the ages. They are mid-late thirties in the book, and Amy is a few years older but I don’t think she has to look noticeably older. They are both described as attractive. Gwyneth would be a good choice also.

  23. Jane says:

Naomi Watts as Amy. She needs to be older than Nick.

  24. Naye in VA says:

Charlize. She plays cold and sweet equally well

  25. Jane says:

Speaking of anniversaries, isn’t it interesting that Ben and Jen just celebrated their anniversary and she hasn’t been seen (pap’d) since?? Coincidence or conspiracy? Ben has some esplainin’ to do… Glad he’s pushing back “Live by Night” maybe that will give him enough time to re-think casting himself as the lead in that adaptation, in the book the protagonist is 20-ish and it’s important that he’s young, yet Ben thinks he can pull that off, well, he convinced all of us that he was Mexican in Argo, right? Ben’s a douchebag…

    • amberly says:

They went to the Turks and Caicos for their anniversary and literally just got back in LA like the day before Ben was papped out to eat with David Fincher. They haven’t been in LA for a steady perios of time since like May.

    • Katie says:

Wait, he’s trying to make AND star in “Live By Night”? Noooooooooo!

I’ll just have to “spoil” the end of that book like I did for “Shutter Island.” There are few things funnier to me than people getting mad that you spoiled the ending of a book that’s been out for at least a year.

  26. CCR says:

I pictured Jake Johnson as Nick when reading the book, although that may’ve been because both characters are called Nick! That said, I think he’s a good fit.

  27. Beep says:

I kinda love Ben for this role. No way on Reese though. I was thinking Amber Heard but she may be too young. I Like Amy Adams or Charlize Theron

  28. Ai says:

Really enjoyed the book too. Ben is sooo not Nick! Too old and just the wrong fit. Amy is also tricky: petite, blond, intelligent and more…the actress must really have the span and depth. She def should be in her late 30’s — this was important. I need to dream up my cast lol

  29. Katie says:

Hollywood is going to screw this movie up. Ben Affleck is not good enough of an actor to play Nick. I think two unknowns should play Nick and Amy, although I don’t know why Hollywood has to make every bestselling book into a (crappy) movie.

  30. Ella says:

I read the book, and I don’t see Ben A. as Nick at all. (don’t know who could play the part!) Anyway, I don’t think much of Affleck as an actor. He had the same expression in “Argo” the whole movie – he should stick with directing. And I also don’t think that “Argo” should have gotten best movie. Oh well, he’ll probably get cast because Hollywood is like high school with the popular people getting all the glory! LOL

  31. Talie says:

The gossipy element of having Gwyneth would be amazing. And she definitely fits.

  32. Elle says:

I think this would be PERFECT casting. Ben Affleck was born to play the role of a cuckolded husband who silently resents his wife all the while thinking he’s smarter than he actually is.

As for Amy, she’s one of my favourite fictional characters ever. I just loved, loved, loved her. She was brilliant, intelligent, manipulative and awesome (most of the time). I actually think Reese would make a great Amy because people have this perception of Reese that she’s America’s sweetheart which would fit right in. Her, or Rachel McAdams who I could see playing this role brilliantly as well.

I’m excited for David Fincher to bring this to the screen.

    • Maya says:

Ooh, I hadn’t thought of Rachel McAdams. I can definitely see her as Amy – and I totally agree with you about what a great character Amy is. Totally terrifying and awe-inspiring but also kind of wonderful – like, you can’t help but admire how she’s always ten steps ahead of anyone else. Definitely a fun, juicy role for any actress.

  33. Annie says:

I think Affleck is just the right combination of charm and smarm. Witherspoon or Paltrow would play different but equally compelling Amys though the crowd makes a valid point: the age difference, and the power dynamic it causes, would be off.

May I submit for consideration actress Amy Ryan. Not only would it be a fun Gone Baby Gone reunion of sorts, but Amy Ryan is a few years older than Ben and, let’s not forget, a tremendous actress. Amy is a tricky part, and I have no doubt she could pull off all the twists and turns.

Ryan is not typically cast as a glamorous leading lady, but she IS a babe and can be made up accordingly.

    Thoughts please?

    • Esmom says:

I like the idea but I can’t imagine it happening. Somehow I have a feeling this will be A list all the way given how huge the book was.

  34. Annie says:

(Like, in other words, maybe Amazing Amy should be played by an honest-to-goodness character actress. Just an idea.)

  35. Evelyn Apricots says:

Goop is Amy. They should give in to Gwyneth Paltrow and Ben Affleck. I love these two together.

    • Suze says:

They are both too old: more important, both of them look too old to play those roles.

  36. Bodhi says:

While I liked Gone Girl well enough, I think Flynn’s other books are better. I LOVED Sharp Objects & think it could be a fantastic (if creepy) movie

    • LucyS says:

I couldn’t get through Sharp Objects. I was about five chapters in and just had to stop. I really, really liked Gone Girl and I liked Dark Places, but Sharp Objects made me uncomfortable.

  37. Axis2ClusterB says:

I love Naomi Watts as Amy. Hmmm, maybe Casey Affleck for Nick? Or Mike Vogel!

  38. Holden says:

You know who sounds like she’d be a great Amy? Blake Lively! *ducks*

  39. serena says:

Angelina Jolie is not petite, I think Jessica would be a good pick. Also Reese W. is producing but I get the feeling she’ll have some sort of part..maybe Amy.

  40. Melissa says:

I like the idea of the following actresses for Amy: Amy Adams, Naomi Watts, Goop, or Winona.

Can’t think of an actor that’s the right age, though. Gonna have to start working on that.

  41. IWantToLiveInNew York says:

I haven’t read the book but probably will.

I just came her to say that that picture makes me want to punch him in the face (I think I have PMS) and I never realized his chin had a butt.

  42. Kelly says:

I don’t see Ben A as Nick at all. Reese W is perfect for Amy. If not her then Jessica Chastain

  43. bella bella says:

Carey Mulligan. She’s petite, and comes off as intelligent.

  44. Suze says:

Affleck is too old for the role.

  45. Nymeria says:

I thought Gone Girl was inane. The premise was fantastic, and the first third of the book was engrossing, but the author didn’t seem to know how to maintain character continuity. A major character does a complete 180, spinning right out of character to do so, at the very end of the book simply because it fits in with the nice, neat ending the author wanted. Nice, neat endings don’t belong to books like this, books that have so many twists and turns. So the characters and the story wind up feeling fake, contrived, and unsympathetic.

    • Anon33 says:

Thank you for explaining exactly how I felt about that book. I was SO excited I thought finally an author is going to do something different here…nope. Total disappointment.

  46. Andrea says:

I think Gwyneth 5-7 years ago would have been perfect as Amy, but not so much now (to me, she looks older than she is). This is really random, but I could kind of see Amy Smart playing Amy. Ben A. is not Nick. Just. No.

  47. maureen12345 says:

Lainey got it- Jennifer Garner is perfect!

  48. A says:

Someone who looks like a younger version of Cillian Murphy for the role as Nick, and Reese Witherspoon or Amy Adams as Amy.
    Who’s with me!!?

  49. Tig says:

I think Ben would be great as Nick- like the poster above stated “charm and smarm”. Amy is more of a challenge- Amy Adams would be great. Don’t think the actress playing Amy has to be older than Ben- looking forward to this movie.

  50. Lux says:

I am NOT happy with Ben playing Nick, it’s ridiculous casting. As for Amy, I always pictured Amy Adams.

  51. Ginger says:

I will preface by saying that I haven’t read the book yet but I really want to after I’m done with Booky Wook 2. My question is this: if the main character is a suspect in his wife’s disappearance and the wife is blonde and condescending couldn’t Ben and GOOP play it convincingly? They could tap into that ex lover rage. Buy if everyone is saying the actors need to be younger…Colin Farrell definitely has my vote!

  52. Shay Kay says:

Scarlet johansen could pull off Amy. Ages are wrong there too so Casey A. For Nick. Casey is awesome and can do quiet controlled rage and vulnerable helplessness.
BTW on the Angelina idea… Someone t play Amy not someone who is Amy… although just like Girl Interrupted AJ would nail the role except in the looks department.

  54. Thora says:

You had me interested until I saw it was being made by Fox. I can’t justify providing financial support to Murdoch’s evil empire.

I’d be interested in seeing Live By Night though.

  55. mimi says:

Amy sounds like Reese Witherspoon to me.

Maybe Rachel Mcadams, (Goop too, though petite usually refers to women who are around 5’2).

I can’t really think of anyone else.

  56. Claire says:

No not Reese! I don’t really hate/love her but I don’t think she is right at all. Amy Adams is super awesome and I could see her pulling it off. What about a blonde Eva Green (just saw Dark Shadows and she was so good). Definately not Ben. Am not a huge Ryan Reynolds fan but for some reason I kept seeing him as Nick. Loved the book but am still a bit unsure if I was thrilled in the ending

  57. mimi says:

It’s obvious Charlize Theron is the best choice. Between her looks and her ability to play really dark AND everything else. Kaiser’s superfan is showing saying Angelna Jolie with a blonde wig. I’ve never heard a fan of the book suggest her. That’s just a ridiculous choice.

  58. Jen says:

Claire Danes! Talented as all get out and a classic blonde. Not at all sold on Ben Affleck. Peter Sarsgard (sp?) on the other hand…

  59. Jenny says:

Tilda for Amy. If they are going for an older version of Nick and Amy, she would be perfect.
