Matt Smith on leaving Doctor Who: ‘I’ve made a huge mistake. What am I doing?’

I am not a Whovian. I do not watch Doctor Who. A Twitter-follower recently yelled at me for abbreviating it to “Dr. Who” by the way. Which just shows how out of touch I am with the Whovians. With so many of your crushes, however, I will continue to try to deliver some news. Back in June, Matt Smith – the current Doctor – announced that he was leaving the role after four years. All of his episodes have not aired yet, right? There are still episodes to air later on this year, including a Christmas Special, I believe. So… the producers still have time to look for a new Doctor. And that casting process is ongoing. But what about Matt Smith? Does he regret pulling out of the series?

More than perhaps any scripted drama on TV, the nature of Doctor Who is forward-looking renewal, embracing the sort of periodic cast upheaval that other shows strive to avoid at all cost. For actor Matt Smith, who is preparing to shoot his final episode as the Time Lord, stepping off the cult hit is an unnerving prospect.

“I feel very proud to be a part of such a wonderful legacy,” Smith said Thursday at the Television Critics Association press tour in Beverly Hills. “The thing about Doctor Who is he always looks forward. The show will get bigger and better and carry on without me … we shoot nine to 10 months a year, the show has come to a natural tipping point … it’s at the top of a cycle … it’s a good time of me and the show … it was a hard choice. I’ll miss it.”

Smith pointed out, however, that “just because I’ve done Doctor Who doesn’t give me a divine right to walk into any other jobs,” adding: “I’ll ponder it and sometimes think, ‘I’ve made a huge mistake. What am I doing?’”

The actor shouldn’t be too worried. He already has his next gig lined up, appearing in next year’s How to Catch a Monster, a fantasy film produced and directed by Ryan Gosling.

Doctor Who producer Marcus Wilson added: “As you say, when it’s time to go, it’s time to go. We want to send him out with a bang. Coming out after the 50th anniversary episode — our most ambitious episode yet — everybody wants to top that.”

[From Entertainment Weekly]

In another post, I compared Matt Smith to David Tennant and wondered if Matt was going to find that Hollywood just wasn’t all that interested in him post-Who. Tennant got a couple of roles in American films, but for the most part, he’s been in British television ever since he left Doctor Who. I get the feeling that Matt is more ambitious and he’s really going to try to make a Hollywood career happen. We’ll see. I will say this – Hollywood always finds uses for pale English actors, no matter what, so maybe his career prospects are pretty good.

E! News says that Whovians are asking producers to cast a woman as the new Doctor, and producer Marcus Wilson tells E!: “The search is ongoing. You just want the best actor possible for the role. We’ve been so looking to have a great succession of fantastic actors. You just have to cast the net wide and hope you find somebody brilliant.”

I don’t think its that Hollywood isn’t interested in Tennant, I think Tennant isn’t interested in Hollywood. He is never going to want to be a big blockbust kind of actor

    • Amy Pond says:

Lol they ALL want to be blockbuster actors. That it’s never going to happen for Tennant (whom I happen to like and whom I think is talented) is a reality he’s had to face, and, honestly, which he should have known when he left Doctor Who.

      • Bodhi says:

Eh, I think he would have gone the Cumby route if he really wanted to be a Big Name. I certainly don’t know the man, but I seriously doubt that he’d ever want to be pap’d at LAX, KWIM?

    • Axis2ClusterB says:

      Exactly.

      • Quinn says:

That’s what I always thought too — I expected him to bite the bullet and make some kind of relocation to L.A. after Doctor Who, so when he didn’t I just sort of assumed he wasn’t as interested in the prospect. Also, he got married and had a couple kids in the meantime, which I’d guess would maybe leave less flexibility to do the Hollywood Hustle a la Cumberbatch.

      • Bijlee says:

He filmed a pilot for an american tv show, but it didn’t get picked up unfortunately. It actually might be a good thing because his accent work in that show as AWFUL.

David’s career is fine. I think he prefers the theatre anyways. He does a few animated films in Hollywood and some REALLY bad Brit/Scott films. Seriously The Decoy Bride is just awful. But he has work and he seems happy and fine.

  2. Anna says:

When will we get the 50th anniversary trailer? It really unfair us UK fan are being left out.

  3. Emma13 says:

I believe David does a lot of theater now, and he has a new show on BBC, right?!

Is it just me or am I the only one who isn’t interested in a female doctor? I want to hear, well read, what everyone’s thoughts are on that.

    • insomniac says:

I’m not interested in a female doctor either (and I’m a girl). I just identify the character so strongly as a male at this point that I think this change would be way too jarring. I doubt like hell it’s going to happen anyhow.

      • Trashaddict says:

I would personally vote for Melody Pond as the next Doctor Who, because she was perfect in the show, but I’m not sure they could fit her in with Whovian rules of transmogrification or whatever. How does he pick his next body anyway?

    • whipmyhair says:

They’re showing his show Broadbeach (?) In Australia right now; it was very exciting to stumble across it. I was going to go upstairs and do other things, but David Tennant is a magnet that made me stand in front of the fire and watch him in all of his moody glory!

      • Emma13 says:

Haha! He is a magnet, I think it’s the hair. I hope it airs in the US or goes to Netflix 😀

      • Al says:

I’m in Australia too and I am LOVING Broadchurch at the moment.

I’m also enjoying Father Brown on the abc on Saturday nights. It makes me feel a bit old that my two favourite tv shows are Friday & Saturday nights on ABC 😛 (or maybe it just says something about the quality of the other crap shown on free-to-air tv…)

      • ol cranky says:

I just saw an ad for Broadchurch on BBC America yesterday. . .I think it starts in early August

    • Cazzee says:

I’m not interested in stunt casting or a self-conscious ‘diversity’ hire where they do lots of news stories and pat themselves on the back for being so brave, etc., for hiring a woman. “Amazing! Wow! Aren’t we great?” Yeah, I don’t need that.

If, however, the producers look around and find the best available actor for the role and that actor happens to be female (I’m looking at you, Helen Mirren) then that would be a lot of fun and I would love watching her.

      • Emma13 says:

I agree, I don’t want them to cast the doctor as female just because they felt pressure to do so, and she ends up being crap. That’s not cool.

I liked insomniac’s point of “I just identify the character so strongly as a male at this point,” and I feel this way too, BUT if she was really awesome and makes an amazing Doctor then I could get behind it.

      • Reece says:

I agree. I don’t want a stunt cast female Doctor. I want the best actor possible. If it happens to be female then great if not that’s fine too.

    • dipgizzard says:

It’s kinda canon that a Time Lady is able to change her gender when she concentrates really hard, Time Ladies have greater control over their regenerations than Time Lords. I mean, the Doctor always wanted to be ginger, but he never has ginger hair.
So I think there’s not really a chance to have a female Doctor.

      • Jay says:

Actually, canonically Time Lords/Ladies do have control over their regenerations as long as they aren’t forced (see: Romana I to Romana II), but all of the Doctor’s regenerations so far have been forced ones when something has happened to his current body to make it no longer viable.

    • MavenTheFirst says:

I would ADORE having a female as the Doctor. It’s about freaking time! And she can have a yummy male companion. A win-win, IMO.

I had no idea Matt Smith was leaving. Geez. Mind you, this last season was crappy. Maybe new blood is needed.

    • Novaraen says:

Exactly…zero interest in a female Doctor. It will never happen anyway…they’d lose so many fans.

  4. dahlianoir says:

I wish he could take Steven Moffat with him. BRING BACK DAVIES !

    • Aud says:

I second that. The stories have gone to hell with Moffat.
Davies is the better storyteller/scriptwriter. Edgier, contemporary. It’s as though the series has had a lobotomy with Moffat. So politically correct. I realised this after watching the first two seasons last week. These days, with Moffat, you wouldn’t have words like ‘prostitute’ or a male to male kiss.
I can’t even stomach watching Sherlock, it’s so over the top and camp, and prefer watching Lee Miller in Elementary.

    • Stormy says:

I third that to the power of one. Freaking Moffat is awful as showrunner now. He needs someone to reign his butt in.

I also don’t think David Tennant was interested in Hollywood and neither was Chris. Shocking though it is some actors are fine with staying in Britain and don’t give a toss about being embraced by American audiences.

    • Sixer says:

Fourthed! I kinda feel that Matt has taken all the criticism that should have been sent Moffat’s way. He did ok with what he had. I liked him. Not as much as Tennant, but I still liked him.

      • MavenTheFirst says:

IMO Davies went to the dark side, to the point of nihilism. Gad, his stories became so depressing. Saints preserve us from him!

  5. AustinMJ says:

Dont Go Matt! I love his Doctor. He is so funny and brilliant. Love tennant too, but I Have to say – Matt’s my fav.

  6. duchessofhazard says:

Can the next doctor not be a white male? Thanks. 😀

  7. DanaG says:

David was my favourite Dr and he has done very well post Dr. Not every actor wants to make it in Hollywood. I think David just takes roles he is interested in no matter where they are. It took me a long time to warm up to Matt so I want really miss him. I don’t think a female Dr would be good I think it needs to stay a male Dr. I like that they find actors and giving them a huge break I hadn’t heard of Matt or David before Dr Who so it s a great platform.

  8. Chicagogurl says:

Last pic — he’s fly is open, right? Maybe he could star in a few things with his friend Cumby. Matt’s insanely talented and charming.

    • hyfr says:

I heard he auditioned to be John Watson on Sherlock, not sure if it’s true or not though.

  9. Leah says:

I think matt has more commercial appeal than tennant so he might do better in hollywood. tennant does a lot of theatre and british tv, he might not even be interested in hollywood.

  10. mom2two says:

Well. Matt Smith basically has the 50 th anniversary special that will air and the Christmas special which deals with his departure to still film.
I think Matt is an incredibly likable guy. I, for one, would watch anything he was in. He might not be the most attractive guy, but he comes across very funny and down to Earth.
I hope he gets the career he wants. He deserves it.
I do agree that Tennett has the career he wants and I don’t think he has any regrets about being the doctor and same with Eccleston.

    • jen d. says:

I actually used to think that he was downright ugly, but charming, and therefore attractive. That sentence doesn’t really make sense, but you know what I mean, right? Anyways, now that he’s cut his hair I find him super attractive.

  11. Erinn says:

The makeup crew needs to give this guy some eyebrows.

While I’m no Dr. Who fan, I have watched with my brother a few times, and much prefer David.

  12. boredbrit says:

I’ve been a Doctor who fan for quite some time now and I have to say I stopped watching a while back. This programme turned to utter shit, the acting became cringey (more so on Karen Gillan’s part) and the storyline got boring. I don’t understand why America is so gripped with this show anymore. Perhaps for the novelty factor.

  13. Jenna says:

I just started to like him as the Doctor within the seventh series, so it’s sad to see him go. 🙁 I think he was a good contrast to Tennant’s portrayal and I hope the twelfth will have a smooth transition. Wonder if they’ll change the TARDIS or the sonic again.

  14. Rachel says:

I think he can make it in Hollywood. The 9th doctor has made a nice little career in Hollywood. Matt has that appeal that he doesn’t need to look handsome but people will gravitate to him. I think he has the same charm as Cumby and Hiddles. Not particularly goodlooking to Hollywood standards but very charming. I wish him well.

  15. dcypher1 says:

I’m a hardcore whovian so its going to be hard for me to accept anyone else as the doctor for a while cus Matt to me is the best doctor and he plays him so well I’m going to miss him. It’s gonna take me while to get over this and get used to a new doctor probably forever.

  16. Grandizer says:

9 to 10 months a year shooting?? Really?? For the few episodes a year we get???
    Wow…
I would have thought it takes half that time to produce the 10-15 hours of how we get, and that includes commercials…

  17. Novaraen says:

There will never be a female Doctor. Ever.

Oh and I hate how the actors that play the Doctor seem to feel that 3-4 years is enough…are you kidding me? Matt was just finding his stride as the Doctor and I think his agents must have been telling him he needed to get out now or he’d be pigeonholed as the Doctor and never get another role. These agents need to shut up…LOL.

  18. AmyLynne says:

I’m not interested in stunt casting either. Just get the best person. I’d love it to be a ginger, but I’m not complaining either way. Yet.

I love Matt and I hope he has a great career ahead of him. He’s just so friendly and enthusiastic; I watched him at Nerd HQ at comic con and he was just all about being there and was so sweet to this little girl. I want to hear more about him! 🙂

  19. Haystacks says:

Matt Smith has the advantage of being a better actor than Tennant. He is not boring looking enough for Hollywood though. I bet he becomes a character actor and plays a bunch of bad guys, then goes back to British stuff.

  20. RandomFandom says:

Any thoughts on Matt being cast for Christian Grey in 50 Shades? Just throwing that out there. . . It may be unconventional from what others are thinking for the role, but I believe he ‘attacks’ his characters with an all in vengeance that would make it believable.

  21. Shelby says:

I keep hearing people complaining about Steven and Matt, so I just wanted to give my opinion on it.
To be completely honest, I wasn’t a big fan of the stories that Russel T. Davies had. Of course, I have a lot of favorite episodes from his writing, but I feel as if Moffat is better at storyline. He writes for himself instead of the fans, which is good to an extent. I honestly believe that Season 5 or Season 7 are my favorite seasons out of them all and Steven Moffat was the show runner for both.
As for Matt vs. David, it’s really all personal opinion. Matt is the Doctor, my Doctor. He does a better job at portraying the actual old, tired Time Lord the Doctor is than David. Example: go rewatch The Big Bang and try to tell me that Matt doesn’t capture the real Doctor that he always keeps inside of him.
So yeah. Start a shitstorm anyone?
