Rihanna shows off her new AK-47 gun grill on Instagram: gross or not awful?

Rihanna

Rihanna is the latest in a stream of pop stars who feel the need to show off their “grills.” I really don’t understand this trend because, first off, one must be fitted for a grill, and I seriously hate visiting my dentist for any reason and have (historically, because I’m of advanced age at 38) only done so out of necessity. The possibility of visiting a dentist out of choice seems … unreasonable and bizarre; that is, other than braces, which seem preventative as my daughter’s case has confirmed.

Yet the choice of visiting a dentist is an affirmative one when it comes to acquiring a properly fitted grill. And all sorts of pop artists these days have done just that. Miley Cyrus possesses mulitiple grills while Madonna has raised her an upper and Beyonce has gone for a vampire grill. Who is the latest entrant into this exclusive club? Rihanna, of course, who has gone (quite controversially) for a grill with the upper formation fashioned into the shape of an AK-47 assault rifle. To paraphrase Quentin Tarantino (and before him, Elmore Leonard), “Accept no substitutes.” These pics function as photo evidence from Bad Girl RiRi’s Instagram account.

Rihanna

This sh-t just seems so weird, but I guess I’m not on the cutting edge and don’t really understand the trend. In other news, Rihanna is once again starring as the drunken star of the Bajan Kadooment Day parade just like she did two years ago when she was slightly heavier. Soon after that last parade, Rihanna went on a strict diet and lost those “extra” pounds, but she looks equally good at either weight. Here she is while cozying up to her Grandpa.

Wait for it…wait for it…Miley is going to do the same thing soon.

    • lucy says:

I know right? I’ve been getting single white female vibes from Miley lately lol

      • MCraw says:

She’s copied Rihanna so much! I’m glad someone else noticed it’s not Pink she’s emulating.

As far as grillz… Y’all are way late. It’s been a “trend” for the last 15 years! Just because Miley hijacks black culture, it’s all new? Elvis take the wheel! Twerking, grillz, none of it is new! Just more (white) women are doing it as opposed to just (black) men.

And Rihanna is so, so beautiful. Damn!

    • Madeline says:

She is so vulgar lately. It’s just disgusting.

      • BooBooLaRue says:

        +1

        +1

You forgot about tedious, boring and predictable. Zzzzzzzzz

      • Kaligula says:

She clearly is just not very intelligent. A case of being in the right place at the right time, I assume? That’s the only way I can explain her success which quite frankly is a catastrophe IMO.

    • thebutlerdidit says:

Uhhh, Miley’s been wearing grills since right after the start of the new year. Before Bouncy, Amanda Bynes, Vadge, and now RiRi. She might have grounds on the whole “copying” thing.

  2. Pastyousayyouneverknew says:

I don’t get the grills trend either but she looks super pretty in that last photo.

    • Andrew says:

I don’t get it either but I guess it’s harmless. She is very pretty, I just wish she didn’t seem so trashy at times (IMO). I do think she is successful and a great entertainer.

    • V4Real says:

+1 That last photo is stunning.

    • LadyMTL says:

      +2

I have never understood the grill trend (be it on RiRi or Ryan Lochte) but yeah, she looks so gorgeous in that last pic.

      • dena says:

I worked at a high school a couple of years back and one of the students I knew ran for prom queen or something like that. Her slogan was “Vote for the Girl with the Grill.” WTF? So I asked her about it. She said that she was “the only girl rockin one” at the time, so that made her unique and she stood out from her peers.

After working with HS aged kids, I came away with the realization that they all are “on she sh*t” (I don’t mean literally) that’s unrecognizable to people over 30. With that said, I think the the 20s are simply an extension of that. Hopefully, you/we sort some stuff out during that time too. But the 30s are really when you start leveling out. With that said . . . when is Rhianna’s 30th birthday? (Smile) I like her, though. I really do.

  3. Nev says:

    love it.

  4. Mew says:

    Plain stupid.

  5. Mo says:

Amanda and Lindsay may be more transparent in their need for intervention, but this girl…. Why with all that she has, is it her number one goal to be as trashy as humanly possible? This girl has some seriously deep issues.

    • Dawn says:

      ITA.

    • bns says:

She’s young and she’s having fun. I don’t see the problem.

      • Pastyousayyouneverknew says:

@Bns +1 I’d like to have it explained to me how Rihanna is as bad as those two.

      • bns says:

^Right? Amanda Bynes may have schizophrenia and Lindsay Lohan has been in and out of rehab/jail. How does Rihanna compare?

      • V4Real says:

Live your life Riri. I’m sure you’re not going to let what a few people say on a gossip site affect how you live your life. Just because your way of living doesn’t suit their standards you are considered trashy, gross and one poster even called you ghetto. I’m assuming she means the urban definition of the word which means unnecessarily uncivilized.

Now on the other hand if it were a bunch of men calling you trashy and uncivilized the same posters would be calling these men misogynistic. They would be saying how much of a feminist they are and equal rights for women. But since it’s women calling another woman trashy, ghetto and gross, it is totally acceptable. Where’s the girl power now?

    • Side-Eye says:

      What V4real said.

  6. blue marie says:

not a fan of it, but she looks beautiful in that last photo.

  7. Rikki says:

    Eh

  8. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

It doesn’t surprise me that I am no longer young enough to get this grill thing. I don’t understand why hipster guys wear those wool hats in the summer. Or why young men think they look cool struggling to walk normally with their pants one hair away from falling off. But I do think this is one of the least attractive and just plain dumb trends I have seen in my lifetime. The fact that it’s an assault rifle…am I really even thinking about whether that makes it worse? This too shall pass.

    • Hakura says:

@GoodNamesAllTaken – ITA. I’m all of 27, & *I’m* too old to understand this trend.

I understand where a lot of the more stupid trends come from (but the guy’s ‘pants almost on the floor’ thing is asinine), but not *this* one. To me, any ‘color’ on one’s teeth besides white creates the appearance that they’re ‘dirty’…

    • IzzyB says:

      I’m 23 and it’s lost on me.

I weave me way through the try-hards, hipsters, look-at-mes, such “originals”, every day. It’s exhausting and irritating.

    • dena says:

Or why young men think they look cool struggling to walk normally with their pants one hair away from falling off.

      **************************
Every time I see that my mind automatically thinks “hip replacement surgery.”

When I was a kid, my grandmother would not even buy us the color black because she said it was “too old for us.” (Perhaps that’s why I wear so much of it now.)

I have seen more drawers then I want to in this lifetime because of those saggy pants. But, but, but (no pun intended) I am beginning to see less outrageous sag and more fitted sag, if you will. (Sometimes, you just have to take your victories where you can get them.)

    • Jen says:

I so agree with you. I think she is a true exhibitionist in every form.

  9. goldie says:

*Ugh* she makes me feel soooo dirty…I need to dive into a tub of disinfectant. Miley is so the fame slag…

  10. bns says:

People get so mad over everything she does.

  11. JennJ says:

So gross, so wrong, and so ridiculous too!

If it were a SNL sketch it would stretch credibility, but sadly, it’s true.

  12. aang says:

I don’t get grills. Or full sleeve tatoos. Or saggy pants. Or wool hunting shirts and lumberjack boots on a warm day in the city when all you are doing is drinking an iced chai. I am old.

    • JennJ says:

      I am with you.

I didn’t get tattoos when I was younger either though — I couldn’t commit to a serious relationship or a career choice or anything beyond a few months in those those days — a tattoo was way too much commitment!

    • BooBooLaRue says:

No aang, NOT OLD! You just have some common sense and class.

      • MorticiansDoItDeader says:

Well done, well thought out, tattoos on men are SEXY! Sleeves especially.

Neck tattoos, on the other hand, scream loser. Around here we refer to them as “the everlasting job stopper.”
        (I’m looking at you Rihanna).

    • dena says:

Don’t forget Ugg boots worn with shorts.

I think it has died (or is near death) but I was so tired of seeing something written across the butt (I really wanted to say ass) of girls/womens jogging pants.

Ooh. Ohh. How about girls wearing pajama pants (ala Sponge Bob / Hello Kitty) out of the house as if they were sweat pants. Or is that just wear I live?

      • Lady D says:

It’s here too. It absolutely staggers me that anyone would wear their pajama pants out in public. They go to stores, school, library, etc. I personally wouldn’t be caught dead wearing my pajamas in public.

  13. Liz says:

I just think she’s gross period.

  14. BlackMamba says:

Rihanna is not the latest to do the grill thing, she is actually one of the first girls(because when I was a teen only guys wore them) to make this into a trend and that was wayyyy before Miley. Like some people have been saying it seems that Miley is really single white femaling RiRi hard. It seems that when she was on hiatus she studied every single move Rihanna made/makes including the short hair(remember Rihanna cut her short in her “good girl gone bad” transition), the grills, the skimpy clothes, the wanna be gangsta etc. Soon enough Miley will be boasting about the thug life just like Ri. SMH.

  15. kibbles says:

Immature, and stupid. Wish she would grow up and put herself together. She looked a lot better when she first came onto the scene (circa 2004-05) before she dated Chris Brown and became more “street”. Hate her look now.

    • Eh...I'm Indifferent says:

      Wow.

I think she’s just wealthier than any of us could imagine in the prime of her life. She’s bound to get bored and do ridiculous things (especially with all of her enabling friends tagging along).

      • kibbles says:

There are also a lot of wealthy young people out there using their money to get an education, become entrepreneurs, start a family, volunteer, and act like mature and decent human beings. Not everyone in Hollywood and the music industry is like Rihanna, Miley, or Lindsay Lohan. Having money is not an excuse to act a fool, go back to a man who beats you, or use drugs.

      • dena says:

@ Eh . . . I’m different. That’s what I think too. She’s living a life she probably didn’t expect and it ‘s not one in keeping with what her “ordinary” expectations would be if she had just been Robyn in Barbados. Particularly, the money.

        I think she’ll be okay.

    • Eh...I'm Indifferent says:

I agree that not everyone is like them, but a majority of the young starlets are this way. They remain relevant based on the attention they get. We live in a world where social media dominates and enables, and people feel entitled to be a part of every aspect of their lives; and if you keep fueling the fire…it will only get worse. That’s what is happening here.

  16. ErinINPitt says:

    oh..I..Ugh.

  17. Princess Lizabeth says:

Really asinine. Why does anyone do that?

  18. janie says:

Yuck! She has her teeth covered more than her body. I don’t get why she bothers dressing at all.

    • bns says:

She was at a festival. A lot of people were dressed like that.

    • Leen says:

If you noticed, a lot of people at the carnival are dressed the same as Rihanna.

    • Laura says:

What they said! This is how women dress for carnival. So in this particular occasion Rihanna is just playing mas!!!!!!

      • MorticiansDoItDeader says:

She also went to the same club as Karuche Tran, dressed in a black see through crop top and no bra. In fact, she is more frequently scantily clad than not. One only has to look at her Instagram to figure that out.

  19. Lark says:

I’ve always given Rihanna credit for saying that she never wanted to be a role model. While I get saying someone might be a role model for their dedication to their job (teacher) or bravery (fire-fighter) or talent (a singer), I’ve never grasped the idea that a person as a whole should be a role model because it just puts someone up on a impossible pedestal.

As far as the grill, meh. She looks nice though and her outfit is typical for Carnival.

  20. Tessa says:

It’s not just that it’s a grill. It’s a grill of a gun. She sends mixed messages to the world, and to her fans. I find it irresponsible. She has an opportunity to be a positive role model for youth, and instead, she glamorizes guns and violence.

  21. jen says:

She looks really great in that outfit, but the whole idea of carnival in the Caribbean is just icky to me. all those sweaty half naked people grinding on each other in the streets……..eh.

  22. Diana says:

Rooting for her. I love Rihanna! She is a stunner.

  23. TheOriginalKitten says:

It’s an interesting piece of jewelry and piece of art, if you ask me.

    • MorticiansDoItDeader says:

I wouldn’t even know what it was if I hadn’t been told. Surely there’s a jeweler that could do better than that. Beyonce’s was well done, this was not.

  24. cloud&feather says:

That last picture is beautiful. That’s all I’ve got.

  25. Nev says:

    GORGEOUS.

  26. Axis2ClusterB says:

I’ll give her this – girl’s skin is flawless. That last pic of her is just drop dead stunning.

  27. K-Rock says:

    What a mess.

  28. Nicolette says:

Not a fan of hers, but the last photo is beautiful.

  29. jwoolman says:

My teeth ache just looking at grills. But then I had an alcoholic orthodontist. For reals. Painful period of my life.

Can she get through airports with a weapon in her mouth?

  30. Meaghan says:

I LOVE her necklace in the top 2 pics, super nice. Wish I had it.

  31. Dommy Dearest says:

    Try hard.
Her, Beyonce, and Miley should form a little group of what to do when you start to become irrelevant.

    • bns says:

LOL at you thinking Beyonce and Rihanna are irrelevant. They’re two of the biggest forces in pop right now.

      • Dommy Dearest says:

LOL in thinking they’ll continue to last. Beyonce is holding on by a thread and her husband sure has helped that. God complexes crash and burn. Rihanna has no talent and only maintains her stay in the limelight with her idiotic antics.

So while you can continue to worship the ground they walk on, I’ll continue waiting for their crash and burn since it’s coming.

    • bns says:

I can’t speak for Rihanna because it’s too soon to tell, but Beyonce has been a huge star for over 10 years now. I’m not sure why you think she’d crash and burn now.

      • Dommy Dearest says:

She isn’t taking a break and going back into hiding. Overexposure. She doesn’t sing anymore she just shouts into the microphone. Charging a grand for concert tickets. Trying to stop certain pictures of her being on the internet ( http://i.imgur.com/55Hcjqi.jpg ). People are waking up and seeing how vapid she and her husband are. Beyonce has only been relevant in recent years due to her fake pregnancy and her husband’s ego. Her last album didn’t sell the way it was hoped.

I can further explain all the reasons I dislike this family as well as why she’ll be crashing and burning in the future. You can only continue going on about your life with your nose stuck high in the air until you eventually trip and fall flat on your face.

  32. Anoni Mus says:

    A few questions about grills:

    A) Can you talk with them on?
    B) Can you eat with them on?

Obviously they come from street or/and gangsta culture. They are also favored by drug traffickers and their ilk. They scream trashy to me. Wouldn’t mind it so much if it wasn’t a gun though. Why the glorification of firearms and violence?

The whole thing baffles me. I’m also too old for this s…t!

  33. GirlyGirl says:

She’s striving for new heights of trashiness

  34. Becca says:

    Ewwww! That is disgusting. Wtf?!

  35. I Choose Me says:

It’s a silly trend perhaps but I won’t knock it. Who’s she hurting by sportin a grill? No one.

I actually like Beyonce’s vampire grill. If I didn’t hate the dentist so much I might be tempted to get one. I can imagine the look on my dad’s face now. Hee.

  36. Chrystina says:

Ok dude. We get it. Youre sooooooo edgy and bad ass.

  37. Bread and Circuses says:

I like to pretend I know nothing about her so I can just appreciate the pretty.

  38. pnichols says:

I swear she does everything to impress Chris Brown. That grill is pathetic.
    An AK-47………really. Loser.

  39. BrandNewNick says:

People with no understanding of West Indian/ Caribbean culture have NO PLACE commenting on it. A lot of you sound just terribly ignorant.

Rihanna was at a festival known as Crop Over. This particular day that she was wearing this costume is called Kadooment Day.

Cropover is very similar to other parades around the world like Notting Hill Carnival in London, Caribana in Toronto or the annual Carnival in Rio de Janeiro. She was wearing a COSTUME just like other women do at carnivals around the world.

    So now you know.

As for the grill… Heaven help.
