James Marsden: ‘I know I have a face like a model, but I’m just a goofy drama nerd’

James Marsden covers the new issue of Out Magazine. No, he’s not gay. Out and The Advocate have been doing this more and more – they’ve been using straight male LBGT allies on their covers. Chris Pine was recently on the cover of Out too, remember? Anyway, I guess Marsden is a LBGT Ally because he’s promoting The Butler – where Marsden plays John F. Kennedy – which was directed by out-and-proud director Lee Daniels. Beyond that, the interview is pretty much a standard-issue celebrity profile. Marsden barely speaks about anything having to do with gay rights. You can read the full profile here and here are some highlights:

Marsden on being good-looking: “I know I have a face like a model. But I’m actually just a goofy drama nerd underneath. I’m actually less comfortable being the smoldering hot guy. I’d rather play a goofball or a rube than a steamy leading-man role,” he insists. “I’ve never been that guy — I was a skinny loner in high school.”

Doing comedic roles: “I think the key to comedy — and I learned this on the set of Enchanted and Hairspray — is that the audience needs to feel like everyone is having fun,” he says. “It’s so obvious to me and the audience when an actor is having a miserable time doing a movie.”

On John F. Kennedy: “His speeches were like poetry,” he says before slipping into a pitch-perfect impression, quoting Kennedy’s famed civil rights address of 1963. “The fires of frustration and discord are burning in every city, north and south.”

Marsden’s main career plan: “Not to sell out.” This means, as he puts it, “no sh-tty horror movies for big paychecks” and turning down long-term offers on not-to-be-named police procedural shows with silly dialogue and stilted acting. “I never set out to make a bad movie,” he explains. “Some movies just turn out bad, and I want to scream, ‘Why did you pick that take?!’ Then there are some movies that I’ve been in that I was sure people would laugh at, that have become huge. I thought The Notebook was going to be a schmaltzy Movie of the Week–type thing, and here we are!” he says, laughing.

But sometimes he was too picky: “I’m a gentleman,” he says delicately [of a role he passed on]. One such misstep may have been passing up a supporting role in a certain rom-com about male strippers helmed by an Oscar-winning director. But to hell with all that, he says. “So far, I’ve been incredibly fortunate in the roles I’ve been offered. Sometimes I worry that I’ll stop getting offered these ‘break in case of emergency’ sell-out parts.”

Getting recognized: “They say, ‘How do I know you?’ So then I start profiling them. If you have a 7-year-old girl? Hop. A 19-year-old, college-student-age girl? The Notebook or 27 Dresses. Fanboy geek? X-Men.”

Funny story: A day before our interview, Marsden was at his local grocery store when he noticed the girl at the checkout surveying him. As he helped her bag his produce, she leaned in close and whispered, “You’ll never believe who was just in here.” Who? “Louis C.K.” squealed the star-struck clerk, and sent Cyclops on his way.

[From Out Magazine]

Well, he doesn’t lack confidence. I get tired of celebrities always trying to convince people that they were dorks or geeks when they were younger, and I’m not buying it in Marsden’s case. Out talks about how he dropped out of college and left Oklahoma to come to Hollywood, and he started finding work almost immediately. Real dorks and geeks would have struggled longer, right? James Marsden has always been handsome and popular and confident. That’s what I think.

Don’t know much about him but he’s always seemed like a sweetheart to me, I don’t find him attractive though, not sure what it is but he just doesn’t do it for me.

  2. notpretentious says:

He seems very self aware. That’s a good thing.

    • stellalovejoydiver says:

I get the opposite impression, he seems rather full of himself. I can´t imagine any drama nerd start a sentence with “I know I have the face of a model.” as for not selling out I guess he considers that movie with Kaley Cucou about the Easter Bunny art.

      • Trek Girl says:

Sometimes being self-aware means acknowledging that you do, indeed, have the face of a model. Especially since looking like a model means people tend to have preconceived notions about what you are, what you do, and how you will act and think.
I can see a drama nerd, or any nerd, say they have the face of a model of it is the truth and relevant to the conversation, which it is in his case.

    • Gretchen says:

      @stellalovejoydiver

Yeah, I mean it does sound kind of conceited, but the fact is he DOES have the face of model, and if he’d replied with all that false modesty crap that a lot of celebrities come out with, eg ‘I just can’t fathom why people find me attractive’ blah blah blah we’d all be calling BS. It seems much more mature and self-aware to just be honest and say, yes I’m hot, but I’m human and this is how I feel. Next question.

  3. plum says:

    So frickin hot.

  4. Kim1 says:

No issue with Marsden but I do have issue with every other month there is a Straight person on Out cover. To me if would be comparable to Ebony magazine having a Non Black Person or Glamour puting a man on cover every other month

  5. Andrea says:

He was hilarious in Enchanted. I’ll never get why they never made the planned sequel for that movie. It was a huge hit with great talent. I heard it was bc Disney didn’t want to have to pay Amy Adams or James Marsden for the lifetime rights to make dolls in their image. Bummer.

    • Ari says:

Best movie ever haha – I HAVE IT ON REPLAY ALL THE TIME and yes he was fantastic in it – i kind of dont want a sequel because it might not be as good and then ill cry weep…anyway HE IS SO HOT and omg big boots on his feet huh?

  6. Val says:

“I know I have a face like a model” is usually how I like to start conversations with perfect strangers just in case they didn’t notice.

    • stellalovejoydiver says:

      and then quote Kennedy

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I just say, “don’t hate me because I’m beautiful.”

    • Anna says:

Well, I like that he’s self-aware, and I think it’s less about being generally good-looking than having certain features.
So this part doesnt bother me.

The whole ‘why did [director] pick that take?!’ spiel does. Oh, that one – or even a dozen – take that would make a difference between a sh*t project and a good film? I dont think so. Take ownership of your work. if you picked badly, dont blame professionals in the field where you have no expertise.

PS – I would pick him over Chris Pine ANY day. Esp bc he is legit funny in movies.

  7. Rhiley says:

I think he should have been cast in Gone Girl over Ben Affleck. When I was reading Gone Girl, JM is who I pictured playing Nick.

    • Bored suburbanhousewife says:

      Me too.

    • Abby says:

I could see that, but the whole “I have a face people want to punch” totally makes me think of Affleck, so I say good call on casting him. Marsden is such a heartthrob to me.

    • dj says:

OMG. He would have been absolutely perfect in Gone Girl. Affleck is wrong. He is too old according to the book. Marsden would have been great as that guy who slides through life! Man. It’s funny because I really wanted Amy Adams to be cast in Gone Girl too. Chemistry people!

  8. PrettyTarheelFan says:

    Criss Cross!
Sorry, he will forever be Liz Lemon’s stay-at-home husband, and I will forever love him for that role alone. Don’t get me wrong, I am a total X-men nerd and that’s where I first met him, but when he showed up as Liz’s HEA, it was So. Much. Joy.
“the camptown ladies sing their song, doodah, dooooooo-daaaaaaaa….” “Yo, dude, I’m back from the hardware store…”

    Sorry. 30 Rock nerd moment.

    • Bijlee says:

THIS! I love him for his role in 30 rock. Unfortunately he’s a bit of a douche supposedly. Something about an affair and divorce. I may not be remembering right tho.

  9. MademoiselleRose says:

I’ve always thought he was extremely handsome, but he does absolutely nothing for me.

  10. QQ says:

Well… How precious.. Also idk if he knows but he already made a romcom with that queen hatpy Heigl soooo tht takes care of that selling out thing

  11. Trek Girl says:

No, real dorks and geeks wouldn’t automatically struggle longer. You don’t have to be so insecure that you get in your own way in order to be a real geek or a dork.

    • Algernon says:

Thank you. Struggle has nothing to do with being a geek or a dork. Some nerds arrive in Hollywood and happen to be talented enough to start working right off the bat.

As for Marsden, I buy the title “drama nerd”. I have a lot of family in Oklahoma around where he’s from and everyone remembers him as a goofy, outgoing theater dork. Is he a comic nerd, or a sci-fi geek? No, because not all geeks are created equal. But I think he is a drama nerd. After all, Tina Fey, who is the queen of the drama nerds, liked him enough to give him a plum recurring role on 30 Rock. She gravitates to that type.

  12. smee says:

ITA @PrettyTarheelFan – he will always be Chris Chros, Hot Dog Vendor, to me.

He’s pretty dang funny. Strangely, I don’t find him all that attractive, altho I know everyone else does………

  13. Trek Girl says:

The first movie I saw Marsden in is the movie “Gossip”, which came out in 2000.

That was such a good movie and was a great introduction to him and Norman Reedus.

    • Ash says:

I saw him, for the first time, in ‘Gossip’ too. And I fell in love! I don’t remember the storyline or the other actors but I remember Marsden.
So Norman Reedus was in it too? Methinks it’s time for a rewatch.

      • Jane says:

I loved Gossip! Don’t hear too many people bring it up. The trio of James, Lena, and Norman (who I’ve been a fan of ever since) made the movie. Them and the soundtrack. The soundtrack was fantastic.

  14. Bored suburbanhousewife says:

I love him but I am a sucker for a handsome man who can sing, act, AND be incredibly dorky and funny in comic roles.

  15. OhDear says:

I wish celebrities would show instead of tell as to how nerdy they are if they’re claiming that. Like I believe Henry Cavill and Megan Fox when they claim they have dorky interests – they talk about nerdy things. With Marsden it seems like he’s claiming it because it’s the thing to claim these days.

  16. Miss M says:

    Kellan Lutz vibe

  17. Bird says:

Yeah, I’m ALWAYS telling people that I know I have the face of a model. It makes me so relatable.

  18. Abby says:

He’s so hot! Forever the nice other-guy in the Notebook. I guess I’m that age bracket.

  19. Elodie says:

HA! He almost always plays the dude who NEVER gets the girl, that’s all I remember of the actor.

  20. snappyfish says:

I can’t with this guy. he really ruined “30 rock”; well, his character and hazel.

  21. AustinMJ says:

    I’de hit it.

  22. Lisa says:

The shitstorm that would ensue if a woman said this…

    • Nina W says:

You hear this stuff from women all the time. “Don’t hate me because I’m beautiful.” It’s a common enough complaint from the pretty people regardless of sex.

    • KC says:

Have you missed all of the Goop posts or……?

  23. Bucky says:

I ran into him at a dive bar while he was filming in my town one night, and he could not have been cooler. He was funny and easy going, was gracious when girls made a run on his table, and ended up coming to sit with my group of friends (we did not run squealing to his table) to shoot the sh*t and whatnot. He really was goofy and seemed fairly self-aware.

  24. Lark says:

I like James. Yeah, I know it comes off arrogant and a woman would get killed for saying the same thing…but I wish more people who looked like him didn’t play the “oh me, I’m good looking?” card like they don’t know that they are. James, Charlize, Angelina, etc. are all incredibly beautiful human beings. I can appreciate that they don’t do the false modesty crap.

  25. Belle says:

It IS possible that he was a drama geek and not the ‘hot guy’… then made it pretty quickly because he is talented and easy on the eyes. Even if he never thought of himself as attractive, how long would it take of having others fawn over you, telling you how good-looking you are, along with sexy magazine spreads that look pretty damn hot, before you acknowledge it? Probably not long.

Also, per the usual… the question posed to him might have mentioned his ‘model looks’, and so he started his answer with it.

Last, I think it is funny (and sad) that the suggestion is that nerdy/geeky people would struggle before being successful. Nerdy and/or geeky does not necessarily equate to insecurity or low self esteem.

  26. Apsutter says:

Love James Marsden. He’s super cute and very self aware. I’ve always thought of him as being a little bit different and geekier than other leading men…he’s been in a lot of silly and quirky movies and is a lot funnier than you would assume just by looking at him.

  27. mythrasun says:

Since when was Magic Mike a “rom-com”?

  28. phlyfiremama says:

“Don’t hate me becuase I’m beautiful” bwahaha

  29. Carol says:

I love his profiling people who ask why they recognize him!

  30. A says:

If a woman had said that… people would want her head on a plate.

And btw, modesty is attractive for a reason.

  31. misstrishm says:

I loved him in Hairspray and Enchanted. He’s very cute and has a great smile.

  32. Au de toilet says:

He looks like a nice guy, he has a kind face, reminds me of my cousin Bill.

  33. KC says:

Chris Pine didn’t say he was straight.

Is Marsden going for some kind of 1st Place award in Humblebragging?
