Worst hair and makeup at the Oscars

With the notable exceptions of Cameron Diaz and Celine Dion, most of the women with bad hair and makeup wore risky dresses that they managed to look pretty good in from the neck down.

Gwyneth Paltrow’s peach-colored Zach Posen tulle and chiffon gown is complicated but flatters her figure well. It looks like she did her hair and makeup herself, though, as she has the same weighed-down too-long straight hair that she’s always seen with lately, and her lips are too red for her pastel-colored dress.

Like Paltrow, Kirsten Dunst is also wearing bright red lipstick with a neutral gown. Red lips are not in this season. It seems like they both just chose their lipstick color using the old “red lipstick for special events” rule that no longer applies. Dunst’s hair was pulled back with plain straight bangs stuck on her forehead. Dust is seen with her 19 year-old brother, Christian. Her dress is a little much with the feathers on the bottom sides, but the top part is decent. I have not been able to identify the designer. Her dress is vintage Chanel.

Cameron Diaz’s bleeding blue eye shadow with too much black eyeliner, dirty brown skin, and sloppy hair are just terrible. She should fire her stylist, hair and makeup people.

Jessica Biel’s curly upswept ‘do gave her hair a frizzy look that didn’t suit her. She wore a pink Oscar de la Renta gown with a black belt and seems to have neglected to apply those sticky things you put over your nipples to keep them from showing through sheer fabric. Her makeup is fine, though.

Eva Green loves the goth look, but it just seems out of place at the Oscars. Her straight hair with a puff crown wasn’t as bad as it’s been in the Bride of Frankenstein past, but I don’t like her smoky creepy eyes. Let me know if you think she pulls it off. Her gauzy dress is not my taste, but it’s not awful either.

Celine Dion’s drab hair drags her down in a too-loose green draped dress that makes her look skinnier than usual. Her makeup seenms cheap with light bronze eyeshadow that’s not blended well, and heavily applied, clumpy mascara.

John Travolta’s spray on hair and too-light foundation coupled with black eyeliner applied to the membranes of his eyes make his the worst makeup of the night.

Update I just realized that Rachel Weisz had dark red lips that she managed to make work. Her dress was silver, though, not pastel, and her lips were a darker red than Dunst and Paltrow, who wore a brighter color. Dunst’s dress is vintage Chanel.

When will women learn that the milkmaid hairdo rarely works on the red carpet.

It didn’t work on Sienna, and it didn’t work on Gwynneth a few years back. And it definitely doesn’t work if you look like Kirsten Dunst.

I just noticed for the first time in these photos that Gwyneth is starting to look a LOT like her mother.

  3. Viv says:

Haha, you sure hate it when people wear eyeliner on their membranes! I remember you did a post on Gwyneth about this awhile ago. =)

  4. Kolby says:

I’ve got to give you credit for liking ANY part of Kirsten Dunst’s look…I thought it was head to toe awful.

Speaking of John Travolta…look at his wife! They are gazillionaires…they are supposed to pay people to tell them not to wear skin-tight leopard-print getups! Ugh!

hehe…. I said to my husband while we were watching, when Eva Green came out to present, that she looked like a mummy with barnacles on her.

  6. celebitchy says:

Good memory Viv! It looks so cheap and 80s to me when people put eyeliner there and I always thought it was a no-no, but maybe it’s back in. It’s even worse on a guy!

  7. Aimee says:

Yeah, Eva Green definitely looks like she just crawled out of a grave.
I don’t hate the membrane-eyeliner thing so much (except of course on John Tavolta), but it does make the eyes look smaller. One can put a little white eyeliner on the lower membranes to make the eyes appear larger. It’s a neat trick!

A commentor on I’m Not Obsessed claimed Kristen’s dress was historically correct? So maybe it’s vintage?

Is it me or does Cameron Diaz make herself more unattractive than she has to be? She used to be so good looking. Now she’s aging badly or something and she’s not even that old at all. The hair is always a mess, the make-up sloppy.
    I don’t know…..maybe i am too critical.

Leave the bangs to boy bands! Yeah, I’m lookin’ at you, Travolta! Seriously, didn’t the blonde in O-town sport this look for a while?

Great job, CB. I agree with everything…even the strange straight hair trend that really only worked on Reese. It helped to balance out the evil chin. And both the Travolta’s looked like nouveau riche folks from Noo Joisey.

Kirstin’s dress could be beautiful, but it looks like they sewed the wrong top to the bottom part the dress.

  12. Carol says:

I don’t know who Eva Green is so when I saw that picture I was like “I thought Lily Munster died?”. Creepy.

I don’t recall ever seeing Paltrow with anything other than plain, straight hair. At least she managed to knock the part a little off center. I guess thats her idea of “doing her hair” 😉

You people do realize these pix are taken in afternoon light and these folks are made up to look good under the stage lights right? Shws what little you know about the biz…

Looks like the Scientologists are trolling the blogs again.

It doesn’t matter what light these pictures were taken in- fug is still fug. Gwyneth looked kind of bland, Kirsten was wrong on so many levels, and Cameron looked like trash

  16. kirby says:

i bet that travolta flew himself in one of his airplanes to the oscars…and the others flew in private planes, and then were taken to the awards show in big gas guzzling limousines….
WTF with these people pretending to save the world from “global warming” Y2K ???
    bunch of retarded flaming hippocrites.
ive heard people say that they think that this is the worst oscar show yet.

  17. Clarimonde says:

I like Eva Green’s look. It’s different and sexy!

  18. Stella says:

Rachel looked great in the silver gown EXCEPT her mound was showing…ewwwww!

  19. Natalie says:

Gwyneth: I agree about the makeup, red with a peach dress? Vital colour mistake.

Kirsten: Terrible dress, her makeup is so dark as well, who told her that dress was a good look? Fire them.

Cameron: That dirty tan is terrible… I thought the orange fake tan was out? Pale and beautiful? She looks fugly and like she caked her face in mud before coming out.

Jessica Biel: She looks ok except for the nipples.

Eva: SCARY! Is she dressed as a zombie bride?

Celine: She always looks weird, didn’t she wear a backwards shirt-dress to an awards ceremony one time? I don’t expect her to dress right.

Travolta: He wins, he looks terrible. Kind of like a corpse dressed up for open coffin.
