Old-school supermodels cover Interview Mag’s ‘Model Issue’: who is your favorite?

Interview Magazine has SEVEN different covers for their September issue. It’s “The Model Issue” which is to say, the fall/winter fashion issue. Amazingly enough, Interview gathered together seven of the biggest supermodels of all time (minus Gisele Bundchen, interestingly enough) for their covers. These are ladies who can go by one name – Linda (Evangelista), Kate (Moss), Amber (Valletta), Naomi (Campbell), Stephanie (Seymour), Christy (Turlington) and Daria (Werbowy). I kind of think Daria is the odd woman out in that grouping, right? Fashion Girls love Daria, but it seems like she really doesn’t have the profile of all of the other featured cover models.

All of the cover images are by Mert & Marcus, and the magazine will also feature pictorials with “more than 70 models including Candice Swanepoel, Alessandra Ambrosio, Miranda Kerr, Doutzen Kroes, Behati Prinsloo and Karlie Kloss — as well as 18 up-and-comers — in a series of stunning photographs by Craig McDean, Fabien Baron, Mikael Jansson and Patrick Demarchelier.” I also spy some photos of Lara Stone without clothes.

So, who’s missing? Gisele, obviously. And Cindy Crawford. I would have loved to see Iman. Helena Christensen is missing. I also would have loved to see Doutzen Kroes. And where’s Claudia Schiffer? But I guess they couldn’t include EVERYBODY, so they just got who they could get and it’s fine. I don’t mean to sound morose, these covers are really cool. I’m really jazzed to see Amber Valletta in particular, she was always one of my favorites. And Christy’s face is still impossibly perfect, right?

Of these models, Amber Valletta is my favorite. Man, I miss watching House of Style in the 90s…

And I would be REALLY excited to see Erin O’Connor inside the magazine (if they featured her). She was always my veryfavorite model.

    • Hubbahun says:

      Co-sign – Amber!

    • Esmom says:

Yes, Amber for the win. She’s always been — and still is — stunning.

Another model from that era I always liked is Stella Tennant.

    • ncboudicca says:

I saw her in a NYC hotel lobby once, back in the late 90s. She had on no make-up and was completely gorgeous.

      • Esmom says:

I don’t doubt that, she seems like a real natural beauty. On a semi-related note, my husband once saw Heidi Klum at a restaurant in LA and said she was far more “smokin’ hot” than you would ever believe from photos and TV.

      • Lipsy says:

I clearly remember reading about Amber long time ago, that she has flawless skin and is one of very few models who shoot with no makeup… sigh.

    • Minty says:

      Where’s Paulina???????? 🙁

    • Carolyn says:

yes, Amber. I miss the Shalom/Amber covers 🙂 The others look too photoshopped. Where are Helena & Claudia?

      • Hannah says:

Amber is beautiful, but she was on Revenge, Season 1 and has a lot of wrinkles. She looks much older than I remembered. These pictures are majorly photoshopped!

  2. Micah says:

    Christy and Linda!

  3. GiGi says:

Oh, love this! I’ve got to say Christy Turlington is by far my fave – always has been.

    • brin says:

      ITA…love Christy!

      • Jessibes says:

I saw her once, just walking around in a museum with her daughter (I think). She was amazing looking.

    • RobinS says:

      +1

    • QQ says:

Christy’s and Naomi’s faces are so so crazy beautiful still

    • Tanguerita says:

Agree, but the picture is the worst, the light is all wrong. I think Linda looks the best in this shoot.

    • layla says:

      Christy. Forever and always.

    • Bubbles says:

I find her face ugly, almost horse like. How opinions differ.

    • Lauren says:

Christy for me too! I have always thought that she is so beautiful. And she seems to be aging amazingly well. The cover photo is not terribly flattering, though. I’m not wild about the style of any of the photos.

      • Esmom says:

I’ve always liked her look, although as I posted Amber was/is my favorite. As for Christy aging, I saw photos of her in recent years where she had obvious work done, looked like fillers. But it seems to have settled (or it could be Photoshop).

    • Michelle says:

Yes Christy is absolutely, naturally beautiful. NO plastic surgery either. I’m also really glad Cindy C didn’t make this issue.

  4. Sixer says:

Kate followed by Naomi, for photogenic charisma.

  5. Out of these covers Linda’s is my favorite but Kate Moss will always be my favorite model. She’s simply in a league of her own!

  6. blue marie says:

they all look so great that it’s hard to choose, but if I had to pick one it would either be Naomi or Kate.

    • V4Real says:

I have to go with Naomi or Christy since my favorite Cindy Crawford is not featured.

      • SoCalgal says:

Co sign! Where is Cindy? As far as I’m concerned, she was the only supermodel that counted ever!

      • YuYa says:

Cindy ruined her face with that eye plastic surgery. Her eye job is just the worst. The models featured on these covers most likely only had some botox here and there…they still look like themselves. Cindy looks like a ghost of herself.

      • V4Real says:

I don’t care it still doesn’t change my mind that she was the best of her era; the best ever. In case you didn’t hear me, I said the best ever. I’m just teasing with you but in my book I do believe that Cindy was the best during the reign of the supermodels.

Look at Janice Dickerson who coined the term supermodel. She was absolutely goegeous back in her day but plastic surgery has taken its toll on her face but while modeling she was drop dead gorgeous.

  7. maja says:

amber is spectacular, but my favorite is by far shalom harlow. that woman is beyond gorgeous. so, she’s missing, definitely.

  8. CleoCat73 says:

Would love to Shalom Harlow. She was my favorite back in the day. And Kate forever.

  9. Anna says:

It will always be Linda. She has been THE supermodel for me for the last 15+ years.

  10. David99 says:

    Christy Turlington

  11. e.non says:

damn, they all look gorgeous; and it’s infuriating that kate moss still pulls it off despite the years of drinking/drugs/partying… lol

christy has the life to envy — still getting those covers and contracts; a successful yoga business; tribeca loft; healthy kids … and ed byrnes… sigh…

    • Rosalie says:

I know, I am always astounded at how amazing she still looks. Every time I see her stumbling out of a club (which is often haha) I think she is ruining her looks. But look at here here! Flawless.

      • A.P. says:

Way too much photoshop going on here on Kate. She always looks absolutely haggard and worn out in any candid shots of her out and about.

  12. Nev says:

    Naomi. Kate. Christy. Linda. Daria

This is fashion yayyyyyy!!!!!! Eat it Wintour.

    • TheOneAndOnlyOnly says:

      Nev, you’ll agree Where is Yasmeen Ghauri the truly underrated glamazon that stole all those early 90s versace shows; Also, as others noted where is Shalom Harlow – she and Amber were fun on MTV’s house of style after taking over for cindy;
At least these are beautiful women, and we don’t have to look at Miley’s tongue.
The fashion industry has to push some of it’s models, enough with d-listers, and how much better is Naomi or Christy on a cover than that sullen waif Roony Mara?
And yes, AW should be embarassed, she’s prob. lining up blake lively for another cover.

      • Nev says:

        hahaha YES!!

I think I can say if we saw YASMEEN GHAURI on these covers, we’d both just combust!!!! hahahaha WORD.

        YASMEEN
        CINDY C.
        NADEGE
        MEGHAN DOUGLAS
        VERONICA WEBB

        all missing….sigh.

  13. Lucy2 says:

Never heard of Daria. Always thought Christy was so pretty, and they all look really good.

  14. bns says:

    I love Daria.

  15. Tessa says:

Christy and Amber. Christy is a goddess, plain and simple.

  16. RN says:

Always Linda, forever and ever. She consistently knocked it out of the park, year after year.

  17. Mrs.Darcy says:

Weirdly for me the best shot is Naomi -I was never a big fan but she looks stunning. Also Linda looks amazing, I love Christy but the boob grab looks awkward. They all look a million times more beautiful and interesting than Giselle ever could,I don’t think she belongs in this group at all. I worked at Ralph Lauren around the time Giselle was breaking through and a photographer confirmed/pointed out to me Giselle’s plastic surgeries, I just find her so ordinary. I do think Cindy is a glaring omission.

    • ChrisK says:

I love when people claim Gisele is ordinary or ugly and at the same time they say she has done plastic surgeries to make her look attractive. Her nose is awful and always has being, her face is the same since her fame came in 1998. Her body has changed mostly because of her physical exercises routine, nowadays she looks too muscular but in the past she looked very thin.
I only can find plastic surgery in her breasts, she has put and took out implants.

      • Mrs.Darcy says:

This isn’t based on internet gossip, but a person who worked directly with her and knew for a fact what she had done, it was no secret in the industry before she was famous. She has clearly had a nose job as well as the very obvious boob job. Which would be fine if it weren’t for her ridiculous pretense that she is all natural.

Your comment about plastic surgery equating with beauty makes no sense. Of course a person can have plastic surgery to try to be more attractive, in Gisele’s case I think it did make her prettier, but she still has a very manly face. That’s my opinion though. I don’t dispute anyone’s right to like one model over another, but I would say I’m not alone in thinking she’s not in the same league as the supermodels that preceded her, facially she just isn’t that remarkable, I never said she was ugly.

      • ChrisK says:

You’re not saying Gisele is ugly certainly but your comments give the impression that you think she is a fabricated doll like many other female celebrities where you can clearly see the hard work of plastic surgeons. In Gisele it isn’t the case.
I don’t think she has done work in her nose because it didn’t help in her career at all, her nose looks bad when you take a picture in a bad position. Her face has always being the same so there’s no surgery done there, skillful protographers and image editors work together to fool people.

There is no supermodel who has the best features ever, they are all ordinary and boring without the help of the best people just like Gisele.
Gisele got the title of supermodel because of the hype given by the people who build up the supermodels of the past. It’s just fashion modelling history.

    • Harriet says:

I always brace myself for these types of conversations especially as I am a big fan of hers. I think most models actually are little weird and that’s what makes them even more other worldly when we see them and adore them. As I am not a plastic surgeon with powers of telepathy I will remain quiet about plastic surgery rumours. Fair enough you worked at Ralp Lauren but this is the Internet and anyone can say or do anything. (I worked backstage at Versace and a make up artist said to me…)I’m not insinuating you are lying I’m just saying I’m probably too jaded to fall for everything that is said about her! I think if you look at her nose and the boobs, and you see her sisters it’s not so unbelievable that Gisele’s genetics were involved rather than a surgeons knife. Plus as a fan since the 90’s, I know that camera angles, itsy bitsy tops etc were also all at play. I don’t usually fall for gossip anyway, I come to celebitchy more for the smart, witty and funny commenters than because I believe everything that’s written or covered. I like people’s opinions- but doesn’t mean I agree it believe in them all the time.

      • Mrs.Darcy says:

Believe what you like, I am sceptical too sometimes “I know someone who knows for a fact,etc.”. I never recount sencondhand stories, I realize now this one was kind of secondhand gossip as it were but the guy had no reason to lie, she was barely known at the time and if anything she was being made fun of/looked down on by the photog. as (high)fashion models getting boob jobs is a no no generally. I do rarely share my own fairly mundane stories of living in NY, meeting famous people is not unusual there when you are young and working numerous jobs and in general my experiences were not that thrilling! If I were going to make up a story it would be something far more exciting than this, trust 🙂

  18. Jackie says:

My favorite back in the day was Helena Christiansen. She’s still beautiful.

    • goddesslove says:

Helena is my favorite too! But all these broads look fantastic in these photos. Simply Gorge

    • Harriet says:

Btw this was for Mrs Darcy. Damn mobile device! I always brace myself for these types of conversations especially as I am a big fan of hers. I think most models actually are little weird and that’s what makes them even more other worldly when we see them and adore them. • stellalovejoydiver says:

Helena still has a bangin body, but her face took a toll from her lifestyle and sun damage.

  19. AustinMJ says:

Linda E., then Christy. Turlington has moved in a very cool direction since her modeling days.

  20. Sunlily says:

Naomi’s face is giving me everything this dreary morning. They all look stunning, but Naomi’s cover is saying “Bitches, this is how you werq!”

  21. Dawn says:

Kate, Christy, Amber, Naomi. Well actually I like them all!

  22. Janet says:

Christy Turlington. God, those eyes and that mouth. Plus she’s the only nice one in the whole bunch.

    • taxi says:

Agree Christy T is very nice, socially conscious, does good for charities, etc. Never met Kate but have heard she is always polite to everyone.

  23. Mar says:

    Cindy – Claudia are missing

    • Mitch Buchanan Rocks! says:

Cindy Claudia and Shalom are going to be featured in the Christmas edition – I think this issue must be for Haloween.

  24. Kim1 says:

    NAOMI

  25. magpie says:

KATE! But they all look great.

  26. Mandy says:

Linda Evangelista and Christy Turlington were my favorites. So gorgeous!

  27. Madpoe says:

Sorry I feel like models or supermodels are a thing of the past for me. I’m not 14 struggling with my image anymore.

  28. snappyfish says:

where is shalom harlow? I love her.

  29. Helvetica says:

    Naomi and Christy Turlington

  30. drea says:

This is cheekbone p0rn. Doesn’t matter how old you are, if you’ve got it, you’ve got IT.

Giselle’s definitely not the only notable person missing. I’m guessing she was pregnant or had just given birth in the time frame these were shot so I’m not so surprised she’s not in the issue.

  31. Lipsy says:

Out of all these cover girls, I’ve always loved Christy and Amber, they can do no wrong. Not the biggest fan of Kate and Naomi but I understand where they stand in the industry… but Daria??

  32. Hautie says:

I love seeing these girls again. The last of the real thing.

And I do find it odd that Cindy and Harlow are missing from the group. They are part of this set and time. When models were Super.

I bet Janice Dickerson is furious she was not included. Since she was (in her own mind) the Ultimate Super Model! 🙂

  33. Adrien says:

Amber up close but Kate Moss on the thumbnails. Kate is just a damn good model.

  34. Christina says:

Christy Turlington. Always. She is a class act and stunningly beautiful. Oh yeah and she snagged Ed Burns! YUM.

  35. MacScore says:

Linda. No, wait… Christy…. No, I mean Amber. Darn, too many beauties here! So good to see them all again. Missing: Paulina, Cindy, Stella, Shalom. Glad not to see: Claudia (always thought she looked like a rabbit).
Just for fun: throw in Patti Hansen. I know she wasn’t in that league, at that time, but I met her once on vacation and she was SO funny and naturally beautiful – even after an entire day on the beach and in the sea with her kids. Very approachable and nice.

    • RN says:

I never understood the Claudia love either. The rabbit comparison made me giggle a little, as I was just moving two of our rabbits into their pen right before reading this.

    • Esmom says:

Also missing: Elle McPherson, don’t you think? Maybe they omitted her because her face is so jacked now. Such a shame.

Agree about Claudia, I used to gaze at photos of her in fascination (not the good kind).

      • amilu says:

I bet it’s probably because Elle MacPherson is/was known more for being a swimsuit model than for being a high fashion model like these ladies. She was never really a “most fabulous face in fashion.” She’s “The Body.” 🙂

      • ImWithTheBand says:

Elle has aged badly. She looks like Steven Tyler now.

  36. Frenzy says:

Except for Daria… the real supermodels! Now even Miranda Kerr is called a supermodel ugh. It would be nice if Cindy and Claudia are featured too or even Helena or Tatjana. Or maybe Nadja or Alec Wek.

  37. Happy21 says:

Linda all the way. To me she never looked anything but gorgeous and classy. Her face was perfection.

Don’t get me wrong all of these women are beautiful and have every right to be supermodels but Linda just well she’s IT for me 🙂

  38. Sorcha says:

    All those covers are fierce

  39. Bird says:

OMG Amber Valetta is so gorgeous it is almost obscene.

  40. Brooke says:

Linda and Kate.. wish they hadn’t put Christy in that awful pose!

  41. Laura says:

Although I think these ladies are all beautiful in their own ways, my personal favourite model from the 90s is and always will be, Niki Taylor! I was an avid reader of teen magazines like Seventeen and YM during the 90s (I was in high school in the 90s) and looked forward to the issues featuring Niki, as she was not only beautiful but came across as a sweet, down to earth person. Someone I could imagine being friends with.

I also thought her younger sister, Krissy, was a beauty and a nice girl. So sad that she died.

Niki Taylor will always be my number one cover girl!

    • Really says:

+1. Exactly who I think of. For the same reasons.

    • Claire says:

Yes Niki!! I had forgotten about her. Did she have a car accident or something and had to have reconstruction? Might be right off the mark, will have to look her up. She was lovely.

  42. nicegirl says:

I love this, but I miss Janice

  43. DB says:

Put all of them back on the covers of everything. I don’t need homely Jennifer Aniston, I need THIS.

  44. ms. deneuve says:

They are hotter than ever. 40 is the new 20! I’m 45, feeling better than ever.

  45. Susan says:

I agree that Daria seems out of place amongst the rest.

She’s more early aughts in my mind as opposed to nineties super model. Oh well.

  46. Agnetha says:

Stephanie Seymour was always my favorite model. November Rain is also my all time favorite music video too. She is absolutely gorgeous.

  47. I'm With The Band says:

Where’s Helena? She was my favourite. Stunning. Just stunning.

  48. Erina says:

No Laetitia Casta though. She was always my favorite!

  49. Andrea says:

This how you do the sept issue covers… Take note everyone else.

  50. Jay says:

Gisele isn’t a supermodel – just someone who got lucky.

  51. Flower says:

Christy and Yasmeen Gauri stunning looks and they always looked high class even half naked the rest not so much.

  52. Official Bitch says:

NAOMI. Has she had a nose job? Won’t be the first most models get them as a right of passage. Kate is stunning. Daria who is that? Nadja Aureman wtf where is she? Elle and Cindy both effed up their faces why they weren’t asked. They didn’t age as well as the others but Cindy is a glaring omission. I never thought Veronica Webb was high fashion model material. More caatlog model maybe.

  53. Jane says:

    I don’t like her as a person, but she’s a great model….Naomi.

  54. minimi says:

It’s sad not to see Karen Mulder. She was one of my favorite topmodels, in the times when there were actually some real supermodels. Unfortunately she also messed up big time with her face, so it would be difficult to include her here…still, they are certainly also missing Claudia.

    • Sarah says:

Yes, Karen Mulder! I loved her. I remember reading about her in YM magazine (remember that?) in the early 90s, along with Claudia, Cindy and the rest. I thought she was so pretty. But maybe she too is too ‘commercial’ since she did Victoria’s Secret back in the day (not to mention her more recent troubles – so sad).
