Christina Aguilera: ‘Trying too hard to be sexy is the worst thing you can do’

Christina Aguilera

Christina Aguilera covers the October issue of Maxim. I do believe she’s mostly promoting her recent weight loss, and I don’t blame her one bit for doing so! The magazine certainly could have chosen a better cover shot because Christina’s blonde hair really blends into the background. Even with the power cleavage effect going on here, she looks pretty washed out. The rest of the photoshoot is much, much sultrier and in a more subtle way. That red dress slays me, and Christina looks very comfortable in her skin.

The interview isn’t all that though, but what do you expect from Maxim? The journo does, quite interestingly enough, try and force Christina to choose her favorite male co-star from her days on Disney’s “Mickey Mouse Club” show. Girlfriend takes a very diplomatic approach in answering the question:

Christina Aguilera

Being sexy shouldn’t be difficult: “I’m such a down-to-earth girl, I’m comfortable in just a jersey and boy’s underwear. Trying too hard to be sexy is the worst thing you can do. Sexiness should be effortless.”

Do musicians turn her on? “Not at all! The quickest way for me to feel weird and run for the hills is if somebody sits down and serenades me with a guitar. It’s not my thing.”

Ryan Gosling or Justin Timberlake? “They were both very charismatic, but I think I have to shy away from the question. I don’t want this to bite me in the butt later. They were tight, you know. They’d walk around together all the time, same as me and Britney [Spears] would. Now look at us. It’s funny how that played out.”

[From Maxim]

Now look at us. It’s funny how that played out.” Christina’s not throwing any shade at Britney, is she? She had better not play that game, but I think that even though there was a fair amount of rivalry between the two ladies about a decade ago, that’s mostly in the past. However, I am LOLing at Christina’s suggestion that she is a casual, totally down-to-earth girl when it comes to being sexy. She loves getting dolled up in overdone hair, makeup and spray tanner. I think she’s appealing to the Maxim fantasy of girls who are supposed to pretend they roll out of bed looking like a pinup without any further maintenance.

    Oh the irony.

      Miley, listen!

    • QQ says:

COMING FROM HER!!! Rotfl is obvious they had to Make her UNDER and that was probably under duress! LOL

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

        Totally.
Still, she looks pretty good (for her) here.

      • Erinn says:

I agree OKitt. It’s sadly pretty good, considering the orange clown makeup she usually has.

The fiance saw a picture of her yesterday – he was like “I liked her when she was chubbier” which I found kind of funny, because I think she looks good at this weight. She hasn’t dropped it all – and I don’t think she should. But towards the end of her heaviest days she just wasn’t looking good. I don’t think he saw pictures of her at that stage though.

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

I agree, Erinn. It wasn’t her weight per se, but the fact that she just looked unhealthy and bloated all the time.

She looks great at this weight IMO.

    • gogoGorilla says:

      I know right?

“Don’t try too hard,” she says, while prancing about in a bra and gaping like a come-hither fish.

Christina Aguilera: ‘Trying too hard to be sexy is the worst thing you can do’

… and you’re still doing it, my dear. Go look at your dirrty video. About 30 times. Now you know an iota of how grossed out we’ve been all this time. Thanks.

    • bloggah says:

stand in your underwear by a large ornate french door by all means not trying

    • emma says:

The first thing I thought of was her Drrrty album. THAT was tryhard honey.

    • elaine says:

she should tell that to leann rimes

  2. Andrew says:

IMO that red dress makes it look like a Playboy shot. I really do like her, commend her for losing weight, I just wish she’d cover them up. She would look so sexy covered up

    • Andrew says:

Just noticed it was maxim lol, so ignore my comment about covering up. But I still think some of it looks almost like try-hard playboy

  3. jemshoes says:

Does anyone remember UK band Transvision Vamp from the 80s? I swear Christina in the red dress shots looks like Wendy James from this era! I loved Wendy James.

  4. Hubbahun says:

There’s a hint of the Porn Iguana about these pics…

  5. Tessa says:

All I have to say is ass-chaps.

    • HH says:

Right! The “Dirrrty” Video is the first ting I thought of when I read that line. Someone should put together a photo spread and call her out on this. There are a TON of pictures.

      • Emma - the JP Lover says:

Why are women so offended by Christina’s “Dirrty” video and give Britney, Modonna, and countless others a pass on all of their early videos??

“Dirrty” was nothing more than a hot video about the old warehouse ‘all night’ dance clubs/gatherings … legal and other wise. Is it because most people mistakenly thought the song was about sex? Try actually looking at the lyrics. It’s about dancing:

        http://www.metrolyrics.com/dirrty-lyrics-christina-aguilera.html

That’s exactly what went down at all the famous dance clubs back in the 80’s and early 90’s. Have you ever since the documentary about ‘Club 54’ in New York City? Have you ever seen ‘Madonna’s first music video of her first sample song shot in one of her favorite dance clubs in New York City?

I love Christina’s voice, and “Dirrty” is still one of my favorite CD’s to listen to. She went through a stage of pushing boundaries in her late teens and early 20’s … like we all (hopefully) did … then she fell in love, got married, settled down and had a kid (I think Miley will too, though she is definitely a wild thang).

Did you know Christina was bullied all through school (a half Latina with blue eyes … her father is from Ecuador) and that she often witnessed her Dad beating up her Mom, until she got the courage to leave him?

Did you know that at her high school prom, everyone walked off the floor when the DJ played “Gennie in a Bottle.”

Christina was definitely working through some issues.

      • tifzlan says:

        +1 Emma

I think people like to crap on Dirrrty so much that they fail to notice other wonderful songs from that album. I LOVE Christina, and Stripped is my most favorite album from her discography. Even if the song WAS about sex, who cares? Madonna is praised all the time for singing about sex, i don’t see why Christina can’t do it too. If anything, Dirrrty is a fun song to dance to and don’t lie! You KNOW you get down to the song when it comes on!

      • Tessa says:

Err, ok. Is this article about Britney or Madonna being quoted saying you shouldn’t try too hard to be sexy? It’s not? Oh, that’s weird… Maybe if it was, our comments would have been about how they try hard too. In this case, it’s about Christina Aguilera, who tries very hard to be sexy, IMO. She wore ass chaps for like two years straight. Not everyone liked the ass chaps. Deal with it.

      • tifzlan says:

Tessa, you don’t have to be so rude about it. Emma and i were simply giving our opinion on things, much like yourself. We aren’t FORCING you to like ass-chaps. No need for snark. Thanks.

      • HH says:

@Emma and Tifzlan – The “Dirrty” video is just one example. There are plenty of photos of Christina going overboard to be sexy. My response was particularly in regards to Christina’s comment. I don’t recall such comments from Britney, Madonna and countless others, but correct me if I’m wrong.

      • Emma - the JP Lover says:

        @Tessa and HH …

Okay, there is no need to get up in anyone’s face about a matter of opinion. But if you ‘do’ feel the need, please be accurate in what you bring.

Christina Aguilera ‘did not’ wear “ass chaps” for two years. She wore them for the cover of her “Stripped” CD (which was released in October 2002) and in her “Dirrty” music video. Her “Stripped” tour to promote the CD was in late 2002/early 2003, so perhaps she wore them, or something closely resembling them, on stage. But again, that was ’11’ years ago this fall.

Why are you holding on to images of her from 10 – 11 years ago? That’s not a diss on your right to an opinion … I’m just truly curious. We all grow and change. My bringing up the other artists was to make exactly that point: others are/were allowed to experience wearing similar outfits in their youth (Madonna still does), which produced similar images. They were allowed a period of sexually explicit behavior and actions, but you hardly ‘ever’ see any throw back on threads regarding them … only on threads about Christina.

I simply said I didn’t understand the consistent and ‘aggressive’ hate on this woman simply for owning who she is.

I ‘do’ feel a lot of the disdain she gets is because many people mistakenly thought—or still do think—the song “Dirrty” was about sex, gave Christina the SLUT label, and have just never let go of it.

      • HH says:

@Emma – I can’t speak for Tessa, but in my view, the issue in particular is with her comment of “trying too hard to be sexy is the worst thing you can do.” Had she either followed or preceded this statement and said something to the tune of “from my own experience…” I would have understood. Also, it’s a completely ironic statement in conjunction with the editorial. She’s definitely had her share of try hard outfits through out her time in the spotlight including recently. If you look at the comments from other posters you’ll find the same sentiments. In regards to other celebs, I haven’t given anyone a pass in regards to this issue. You’re taking this rather personally, especially from a site called “Celebitchy.” I know that you “LOVE” her, but that doesn’t mean she should be free from criticism, particularly when it’s simply a matter of opinion. We will simply have to agree to disagree.

Question: Is wearing boy’s underwear part of being a “down to earth” girl?

    • Emma - the JP Lover says:

@Vera, who wrote: “Question: Is wearing boy’s underwear part of being a “down to earth” girl?”

Yes … a woman comfortable enough to own wearing boy’s/men’s underwear is a ‘down to earth’ girl.

  7. TherapyCranes says:

Cause she is totally -not- trying hard. Right guys? She just can’t stop oozing sexuality. It’s so natural for her. *EYEROLL OF THE DECADE*

    • greenmonster says:

Of course she is not trying to be sexy in these pictures (or ever). It’s obvious that she had some severe back pain in the last picture and was doing some exercises (in high heels and a Bikini, i guess – because… of course) to lessen the pain and someone took a picture.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Right. I always mess up my hair, squeeze my breasts together and pull the front of my dress up when I’m not trying to be sexy.

  8. greenmonster says:

Her hair is such a mess. It looks horrific in the third picture.

  9. H. Scott says:

She looks like Courtney Stodden in the red dress pics. So natural, so subtle *eyeroll*

  10. MrsBPitt says:

Love these women who give interviews when they are heavy and state that they “love” their bigger body and feel sexy being “curvy” and then as soon as they lose weight, there they are in a magazine, half naked…Her body does look good, though. She is at a good weight in these pictures. She didn’t look good when she was stick thin, any more than when she was a little heavy.

    • emmie_a says:

What’s wrong with loving your body, no matter the size? Maybe Christina really did enjoy her curves and maybe she enjoys being this size as well — I’m not seeing the problem with either. And even if she didn’t *like* gaining weight, what is she supposed to do? Hate herself and hide until she loses weight?

    • Sassy says:

Did she have a butt implant? I recall her being really skinny with no rear end to speak of.

  11. Barrett says:

I’m dying laughing. She is so try hard and fake looking. I can’t even address that comment further. What an idiot!

  12. HH says:

She needs a complete overhaul of her hair and makeup team. She’ll either look overdone, too severe, or just a little off. I honestly don’t recall at least one picture where I think her hair and makeup has looked on point. Perhaps I just don’t like whatever looks she goes/has been going for.

  13. HQ says:

She was Miley (with a better voice) a decade ago.

I loved the Back to Basic Era.

    • Pinky says:

Back to Basic was an incredible album. Best song on the disc? Back in the Day. So funky!

    • aaquarius74 says:

Yes, she has a million dollar voice. That’s why I’ll always find her excuses for her behaviour. She has so much talent, but she has to fight the frustation of not being recognized as the biggest star (she rivals Beyonce’s voice, if she doesn’t overtake hers). Not to mention the Britney problem.

  14. janie says:

I think she looks lovely… she can’t win no matter what she says or does. I do love her voice, phenomenal!

    • Emma - the JP Lover says:

@Janie, who wrote: “… she can’t win no matter what she says or does. I do love her voice, phenomenal!”

True that … and I have never understood why. 🙁

      • Bridget says:

She has a very lovely, amazing, one in a million voice. But she’s got a reputation (especially post-divorce) as not being a particularly nice lady and now that she’s in a fairly extended professional slump she’s getting more defensive, which then opens her up to more criticism. Personally, I’m not a fan of her style choices – it always feels like she’s trying to co-opt someone else’s mojo, almost like she’s never been happy being the person she is. If that makes sense. Like the phase where she went all Marilyn for Back to Basics. More than anything, to me she comes across like a woman who has never been truly comfortable being herself, no matter what message comes across in her music.

    • Relli says:

      Totally!

  15. Lucy2 says:

She is the very definition of try hard, so that’s hilarious. She does look good though, but as always I wish she’d tone it down and class it up.

    • ChrisK says:

      I agree with you.

Christina never tried to pass an image of a dignified woman or at least a classy woman. She always looks like thrash to my eyes. She is no different from other Pop Stars. I hope she changes her marketing strategies someday in the future.

She has an amazing voice but her precious asset is very damaged due to abuse and mistreatment.

  16. Abby says:

Girlfriend has the BEST shoe collection. I could totally see her having these shoes at home. She looks good in the editorial, not so much the cover.

And you’re right, getting dolled up is her thing–she doesn’t ever just roll out of bed.

  17. Jennifer12 says:

No effort at all…. just implants…. nothing to see here, folks, no one trying hard to be sexy….

  18. grabbyhands says:

Christina Aguilera: ‘Trying too hard to be sexy is the worst thing you can do’

Says the woman posing for Maxim looking like Courtney Stodden. Also, did she just blackout the previous booze bloat period she JUST went through when she still tried to dress like she was the size she was when she was a teenager?

Oh my god, the denial is amazing.

  19. serena says:

She’s not the brightest thing but she looks stunning! Now if only it wasn’t for the white-blonde hair..

  20. vv says:

So, she dropped a few pounds and starts prancing around in her underwear again in photoshoots.

    Great. How original.

  21. Quinn says:

Good Lord. She still looks like ten pounds of sugar in a five pound bag.

The last decade or so has really made women forget a true adage…leaving something to the imagination is much more alluring than giving it all away at once.

  22. Nicolette says:

Love the red dress, and she has lost a lot of weight. But sorry, ‘Trying too hard to be sexy is the worst thing you can do’…….really? How else do these photos come across?

  23. Huh says:

She’d know, wouldn’t she? She’s intolerable in interviews. Top of my list of truly unlikeable celebrities just in terms of her perspectives/personality.

IMO, absolutely she’s throwing shade at Britney Spears, per her usual. Britney likely has serious, diagnosed and managed mental issues. Christina, on the other hand, is just a g.d. brat. And deeply unsexy.

  24. Jayna says:

I love Christina musicwise, but she has never come off great in interviews, except occasionally. Still hasn’t toured in like seven years. She said she was this year and didn’t after her album bombed. I hope she can get a better direction and put out a great album. Dirrty was a great album.

    • Dommy Dearest says:

Dirrty was a great album she’s put out, probably the best out of all (though Dirrty was my last Christina album I bought). I think this woman has one of the best voices out there right now. She beats Beyonce’s constant screaming and Rhianna’s lack of talent. But you can’t put a wrecked train (Christina) back on the rails and expect it to continue chugging along perfectly.

  25. G says:

    Girl please.

You’ve been “trying to hard…” for the last 5yrs.

  26. Susei says:

Don´t like the cover. She sounds soo idiotic in interviews…

I can understand that she wants to show her “new” body with a sexy shooting… but every single photo looks “try hard”

  27. Bird says:

It’s a rare thing when you look LESS trashy in your Maxim photo shoot than you do in real life. This is the best she’s ever looked and I hope she keeps things toned down.

  28. Meggin says:

Talk about the pot calling the kettle black! She always tries way too hard to be sexy

  29. Chris says:

Christina said it herself that during the dirrty era she was not trying to be sexy, she was going for shock, one of her quotes was ” f@ck the being pretty”,

anyway she looks great sexy but classy nothing like the courtney person, and how is she shading britney.

  30. Baylor says:

Do musicians turn her on? “Not at all! The quickest way for me to feel weird and run for the hills is if somebody sits down and serenades me with a guitar. It’s not my thing.”

What?! I believe her now boyfriend is/ used to be a “musician.” There are pictures out there of him performing with a guitar and her sitting on the floor in front of him clapping and acting like a fan girl. I have a hard time believing he has never performed for her at home.

  31. Claudia says:

I think she looks great in that full-length shot of the red dress. I am so in love with breasts, she’s got great ones! I am really small chested so I am always hyper aware of people’s boobs. Is that weird?

Sigh. I just really want bigger boobs. *weeps*

    • Lila says:

I think she looks great in that shot too. I think we notice what we think we lack. I am only 5’3″ and would love to be a couple of inches taller. I always notice people’s height!

    • lisa says:

you too could buy those boobs

  32. Shannon says:

Then what has she been doing all these years other then trying to be sexy? And is Maxim still popular? If I was her I wouldn’t be doing a spread with them.

And she looks like Courtney Stodden in these pics.

  33. lisa says:

she looks better here where she didnt style herself, but i still think she puts herself together like a drag queen

and while i love drag queens, it’s not a great look for a girl

  34. Virgilia Coriolanus says:

……….says the woman who went on stage in a leather, metal studded DIAPER, clown makeup, orange skin, and thought she was Elizabeth Taylor reincarnated for the viewing pleasure of us peasants.

  35. Mitch Buchanan Rocks! says:

As long as she doesn’t put out another Christmas agony I mean album.

  36. NANALU says:

AIRBRUSHING PLASTIC SURGERY LIPO does WONDERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  37. Dommy Dearest says:

That deer stuck in headlights look for the cover picture screams of try hard sex appeal. I like her curves but her interview ruined the pictures. ‘Trying to hard to be sexy is the worst thing you can do’… Shut your mouth while you’re posing that’s the first thing all women do when they are trying to be sexy is the open mouth pose.

  38. Leila in Wunderland says:

If Jennifer Lawrence or Taylor Sift did this exact photoshoot, I would see it as a little try-hard for them. If Miley Cyrus did this exact same photoshoot, it would have been classy and toned down by Miley standards. For Christina Aguilera, it doesn’t come off as either ‘trying too hard to be sexy’ or as toned down, it’s a nice middle ground- it’s just very her. It’s very Christina. And she does look sexy in the red dress. Now if only she’d lose that tragic white hair.
