Tom Cruise could have been in ‘Milk’

valkyrie premiere 2 210209

There have been some dribs and drabs of Tom Cruise news here and there the past few days, and some of it is really funny. Tom’s been in Europe promoting Valkyrie, and I’m starting to suspect that maybe the translations aren’t so great. There were a few headlines like “Tom Cruise loves sausages” that cracked me up, but I couldn’t find his original statements.

Katie Holmes has joined him for the European tour, now that her play’s run is over. Yesterday, as they were exiting Berlin, they apparently made out in front of the trailing paparazzi, so that made even more headlines. Today they attended the UK premiere of Valkyrie. Katie looks surprisingly well-rested and put-together, donning an attractive black cocktail dress, black panty hose and short heels.

In other Tom Cruise news, Milk director Gus Van Sant has recently admitted that Cruise was his original choice for the role of Dan White, Harvey Milk’s assassin. It would have been interesting casting, but I doubt it would have worked.

Gus Van Sant has revealed that he originally wanted Tom Cruise to star in the Harvey Milk biopic.

The director said he thought Tom in the role of the outspoken gay politician’s assassin, and Sean Penn in the titular role, would get the fledging project off the ground. And he was keen to make the movie before the memory of the real-life Harvey Milk faded.

“I thought if I connected those two guys at the time I could go into the studio and say ‘look I have these two guys’ and they would do it. There was always the problem with the gay community aspect of the film so they needed a reason to overcome that fear that they had of making a film that wasn’t going to have a very big return money wise, so that was my plan,” he said.

Van Sant said that when the idea launched again, with a different writer at the helm, he forgot he had offered Sean a part.

“We had a meeting with him at his house, and half way through the meeting – it took me that long for me to remember – I realized that I’d actually gone through all this and met him before, I’d somehow forgot,” he said.

The part of Dan White was eventually played by No Country For Old Men star Josh Brolin.

It would have been a hell of a comeback role for Tom Cruise, but I’m sure Xenu wouldn’t approve. Just the “Tom Cruise starring in film of gay icon’s life” headlines alone would irked Xenu. But I bet Valkyrie does well in Europe, especially in England. So many of Cruise’s co-stars are great British actors. I’m sure audiences will go see the film just to support them.

Here’s Tom and Katie at the UK premiere of Valkyrie today. Images thanks to WENN.

Katie really does look great here. For all the speculation about her marriage, I suspect that a huge source of her recent exhaustion has been her schedule with All My Sons–now that the play has finished its run, she’s probably been able to get more rest.

Katie looks unbalanced, with the bare strappy neckline of the dress then all that lower blackness, it blurs out all the delicate beaded details. Beautiful dress though, I would have loved to have seen it with bare legs/nude nylons and less cankle-inducing shoes.

I wasn’t really sure what the point of Gus Van Sant’s statement was. He forgot he offered it to Sean? How does someone forget something like this? And I would have liked to know why Tommy didn’t get cast,to know if he turned it down or if the studio said no. When I first read this I thought Tom was being offered the lead role and I could not for all that’s holy imagine him in that part. Hearing Tom say “I am here to recruit you” would have been way too much media fodder.

From the shoulders up, Katie looks gorgeous (not a fan of the dress, the thick black tights or the boots). She really is a very beautiful girl and it always made me sad to see her so gray and washed out in the last year or so.

I love all those British actors, but I still couldn’t bring myself to sit through that Cruise vanity movie. I’ll wait till it’s on TBS.

    He wishes.

I think the shoes and hose make her legs look thick and stubby, and I’m pretty sure she’s like a 2 or so, so I know she’s not fat. Not really a good look on her

  7. I agree with the commenter above that from the shoulders up Katie Holmes looks really beautiful. She could have ditched the stockings and worn better suited shoes. As to Tom Cruise, it does seem a bit odd that Gus would “forget” he offered the part to Sean Penn. I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m not buying that which makes me wonder why he even offered the information in the first place.

  8. Dirty Martini says:

Does it annoy anyone else but me how pics of them together always have her hand resting on his shoulder? I know she towers over him and all (guess her hand wont reach down to his back?) but I swear it makes her look like his mom or something–too protective maybe?

I don’t know why, but it just bugs me.

    Almost as much as scientology………..

    Just sayin.

  9. doodahs says:

Why does he keep marrying these amazon women? Is it to prove to the world that he is secure with his height?

i love katie she’s so beautiful and so classy.

  11. Mairead says:

Tom wasn’t being considered for Sean Penn’s part (Milk) he was considered for Josh Brolin’s.

I quite like Katie’s dress, it has some lovely detailing.

I doubt that a supporting role in Milk “would have been a hell of a comeback role for Tom Cruise”. First, he already had last summer such an elevating supporting role (in a blockbuster nevertheless) and earned a Globe nomination for that. And second he’s the lead in Valkyrie and, like it or not, it’s already a success even without all the money that’s coming in from Europe now.

  13. CandyKay says:

I see Tom Cruise’s reputation making a slow comeback, here.

I’m not really a fan of his one way or the other, but I must say he’s worked hard for it. He must have done a couple of hundred interviews and appearances for this Nazi film.

You can certainly see the difference between people like Cruise and Brad Pitt – who really get out there and hump for their projects – and the Jeremy Pivens of the world.

  14. Mairead says:

Well, you could never accuse Tom of not being a hard worker and not grafting for every iota of success he has.

A twerp, (with an irritating need to be adored, who won’t hesitate to put ethics on you and with a propensity for muffing up an accent anytime he’s attempted one) maybe – lazy, no.

  15. ebgirl says:

Are there still rumors circulating that Tom is closeted? I just think it’s interesting because I heard an interview with the writer of Milk who said that it was very important to him to not have closeted gay actors in the film, since that was so against everything that Harvey Milk believed in. He didn’t mind known straight actors playing gay characters or vice versa, but he really wanted to avoid any closeted actors having a prominent role in the film.

I noticed in past photo when Katie first started dating Tom how young, big smile so full of life she was and now she seem unhappy. I read somewhere that he told her to cut her hair, he probably told her also how to smile and act when they are in public
