First look, Nicole Kidman as ‘Grace of Monaco’: total disaster or not that bad?

Here’s what I don’t understand: why is Nicole Kidman so desperate for another Oscar nomination? It seems like that’s been her goal for the past few years in particular, like she wants to “prove” that she’s still one of the most important actresses out there, like she was a decade ago. She did get a nomination for Rabbit Hole a few years ago, but no one really remembers it. Anyway, that was/is Nicole’s goal for Grace of Monaco. She wants to be a contender! She wants everyone to say, “OMG, Nicole Kidman looks so much like 33-year-old Grace Kelly, let’s give her an Oscar nomination for being so amazing!” Except that most of still remember that there were other, better contenders for Grace and that somebody was smoking crack when they cast Nicole. So, the first trailer for Grace of Monaco has come out and…OMG.

This reminds me so much of the first trailer for Diana starring Nicole’s friend Naomi Watts. Does Nicole look like the 33-year-old Grace Kelly (or Her Serene Highness, Princess Grace)? Not at all. They didn’t even make Nicole a real Grace Kelly blonde!!!!!!! Nicole just has the same strawberry-blonde hair that she’s had for a while. And besides that, it’s like they weren’t even trying. She doesn’t look anything like Grace whatsoever. She just looks like 40-something Nicole Kidman in pretty clothes. Which is a lot like Naomi Watts in Diana, only Naomi actually did TRY to do some Diana-ish stuff, like wear a wiglet and get clothes that looked a lot like Diana’s most famous gowns. Anyway, the same thing is going to happen, that’s my prediction: that this film will be so bad that the critics savage Nicole and the whole idea of the film. My other prediction: Nicole will not be getting another Oscar nomination this year.

The teaser showed no action, no plot. And I had such high hopes!

    I can just imagine Grace, Diana and Elizabeth Taylor sitting together in the most in-demand cocktail bar in heaven, martini in hand, looking down and thinking;
    “…Bitch, please.”

And lift their un-botoxed eyebrows in an epic side-eye.

Elizabeth was known for cosmetic surgery, and I think Grace, with her young boyfriends, and Diana with her insecurities, would probably be ODing on botox.

This may be the best fantasy I hear all day. I must run off now – I need to become famous, reach iconic status and die so I may join them in the cocktail bar when Mary-Kate Olson takes on “The Transcendent J. Eyre” in her made for tv movie.

      • Amelia says:

I’ve no idea why, but my mind just immediately leapt to the thought of your funeral, complete with thousands of mourners lining the gates of the cemetery.
Then, just as your dearest and nearest are invited to place a rose onto the coffin, TommyAnne flings himself across your casket, bawling his sparkly little eyes out.
Cue Fassy pulling him off and demanding what he’s doing at the love of his life’s funeral.
Hiddles raises his handbag, prepared for dragonfly-rules fisticuffs, and Fassy promptly punches him out.

      • j.eyre says:

Oh my stars! That’s a wonderful scenario (my apologies to Hiddles.) And in the middle of the kerfuffle, CHemboy raises my coffin up over his head (with one hand, of course. Maybe his bicep rips through his shirtsleeve as a result of the lifting) and pronounces that my memory should not be sullied by such tom-foolery and walks me out as a tear falls from his eye. This would be where The Mac and Ewan jump up and walk behind the coffin… in kilts because, well, that part is obvious, right?

      • Amelia says:

The kilts provide good ventilation for their magic, Scottish appendages which will be used in an Ancient Norse/Australian ceremony in order to bring you back from the dead?
        Thought so.

      @ Amelia

Grace of Monaco was good life long friends with the amazingly talented and equally beautiful Josephine Baker. Grace and Josephine met when Josephine was denied service at a ‘whites only bar’ and Grace seeing this approached/ comforted Jose and told the business off saying would never spend her money at such a disgusting place again. From that moment forward those two ladies from such different worlds/ upbringings/ experiences became very good friends. I already liked both ladies individually for their talents/ beauty/ passions but finding out they were like besties (Grace even gave Josephine money for a place to stay when Josephine went bankrupt) up until death just makes me love them both even more.

LOL I know a bit of random info… but when I read your post I sort of replaced Elizabeth and Diana with Josephine. Now those are two ladies I can imagine just sitting around for a good chat and catch up just saying ‘bitch, please’. 😉

      • Blue says:

That story makes me respect Grace so much. I had no idea she and Josephine were friends. What a great and courageous lady for standing up against racism like that. She truly was a princess.

      • MaiGirl says:

Wow! Nice story! I didn’t know about this at all, and I know quite a bit about La Baker’s life. How very classy of Grace!

      • Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

Definitely a woman of contrasts. Heavily involved with March Of Dimes and one for the first celebrity endorsers for La Leche, a very loyal fan…and a nightmare to the married woman. She makes January Jones look like a freaking June Cleaver.

  5. Hannah says:

Why does she want another nomination? Probably for the same reason her face looks the way it does: insecurity.

  6. Elisabeth says:

what’s going on with her nose in the 1st pic? that is a face FROZEN in time

  7. Stephanie says:

    No dice.

  8. Sankay says:

Couldn’t she just want to play interesting characters? She takes on such varied and interesting characters – I don’t think the little golden statue is her goal, at least anymore.

    • alex says:

i agree…maybe this Grace Kelly movie wasn’t the best casting choice but I think Nicole just enjoys intresting parts. Rabbit Hole was great I thought and she has done HBO too, that’s not chasing an oscar.
I’d rather her be interesting than turn around and be like Halle Berry or Reese Witherspoon who never have interesting movies anymore.

  9. alliekat says:

i mean… whaat? the grimaldi family is just a bunch of rich upper crusters. what did they do?! build a tax haven and they will come. grace and her momma angled gracie a nice rich ladies life. they’ll talk about her for years to come, give me a break. it speaks volumes about nicole’s arrognance too that she plays this role…

    • Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

Yeah, they’re a weird bunch. I think marrying R. Grimaldi was a cut in pay, though. Her family gave him 2 millions dollar dowry in 1956 money so she could be a princess. They barely knew each other, she couldn’t speak French had hayfever. He was a workaholic and inveterate philanderer, they barely knew each other, they were miserable, she drank. They did reconcile a few years before her death, so that’s something.

  10. neelyo says:

I’m not a Grace Kelly fan. She was pretty, a marginal actress and the only reason people remember her is because she married a prince. Besides being a slut in Hollywood and the car crash there’s not much interesting about her life.

Also, she looked pretty matronly by the 60s so a 46 year old Kidman is about right for a 33 year old Kelly. And her features were so patrician and bland that I don’t understand the need for a doppelganger. You could probably go to any East Coast country club and find one.

I like Kidman and I’m intrigued by the director, Olivier Dahan, but the subject matter holds no interest for me.

And why is everyone hoping it bombs so much?

    • Harriet says:

Gotta say, balls for saying what you just did! I don’t love her or hate her but it’s just nice seeing alternative views here sometimes!

      • No hate says:

        Ha!!
        This +1000

It’s like the poster says go right and all the commenters go right, go left. ..
my eyes are about rolling out of em suckers!!

      • Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

I’m also neutral on her but that was fun to read. 😉

    • starrywonder says:

Eh I actually saw some stills and thought she looked like her. However, one question why do women when portraying famous women have to look exactly like them. Tons of male actors when portraying someone famous look nothing like those people, i.e. Phillip Seymour Hoffman portraying Truman Capote, Russell Crowe portraying John Nash, etc.

The movie looks interesting and I actually want to see it.

Diana from the beginning did not look that great and once they decided to make it a movie about some great conspiracy I lost interest in it. Frankly Diana would have been better if they focused on her life pre-Charles and how she came to be the Princess of Wales and stopped there.

      • neelyo says:

Great point and so true. Hoffman looked nothing like Capote and won the Oscar so who cares if she looks like Kelly or Naomi Watts looks like Diana. The only reason I can think of such concern is because Kelly and Diana’s main appeal has always been visual, not substantive so therefore it is the most important quality when portraying these people. Michelle Williams didn’t resemble Marilyn Monroe but Monroe had such a distinct presence that she could evoke her through mannerisms and behaviour. I don’t know how you’d do that with Kelly and/or Diana.

    • Kiddo says:

I like old Hitchcock films, my favorite is Rear Window, so I appreciate Kelly for that, although Jimmy Stewart obviously carried the film.

I don’t particularly find Nicole Kidman all that beautiful. She irritates the hell out of me, for some unknown reason. I think she is more bland than Kelly who, in her youth, had a sort of glow. Or maybe it was lighting and lens Vaseline, lol.

    • Tanguerita says:

Absolutely agree with you. Still, I hope that it bombs because at some point even people in Hollywood (slow as they are at catching-up)should understand that being dead doesn’t automatically mean being worth making a movie about.

    • Anna says:

I dont think people hope – I think they expect that it will bomb. I am a Nicole lover and apologist. I also gobble up all sorts of glitzy glamorous celeb/royal stories like it’s my job. This was one of the movies I could not WAIT for to come out. And then we’re treated to an over-botoxed, fuzzily-lit perfume commercial…

    • Kate says:

Thank you! Grace was pretty in a bland way, had a great figure and carried herself beautifully in her youth, but she was also very, very carefully shot and photographed. The mannish features people talk about in Caroline and Stephanie, that’s all Grace. By her 30’s she was looking very matronly, she had always looked older than she was and it caught up with her (again, where do people think Caroline and Stephanie got it from?) There’s a reason she married Rainier at the height of her career, she was a smart woman and she knew she had a use by date in Hollywood.

I don’t have high hopes for this film because from the wedding to the car crash, Grace’s life just wasn’t that interesting, and by making it about that time you cut out most of the juicy stuff, and a lot of opportunity for fun minor roles. A film about Grace’s film career, with all the sleeping around and lot’s of little cameo roles for people playing Hitchcock, Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart and so on, that could be entertaining. This will have to be about the clothes, the jewellery, the scenery, because there wasn’t much else going on, at least not the kind of stuff people want to watch a film about. Unless it get’s appalling reviews I’ll see it for the visuals, but this was never going to be a masterpiece. People are focusing on the wrong Kidman film, The Railway Man looks great and could get her that nomination, this was never going to.

      • hillbillyinthecorner says:

I know what you are saying…I would have loved to have see who that would have cast as Gary Cooper…..he really had the hot’s for her…and Oleg Cassini the designer she had the long standing affair with…that would have be really good…Or they could have went for the Hitchcock obsession he had of her….oh well just another white wash Hollywood rewrite history story….

      • Suzy from Ontario says:

Problem is that would interfere with the fairy tale image they clearly want to project of Grace. It’s like they don’t think movie stars of that era slept around or acted badly, unless it was like Elizabeth Taylor and then it’s excused as being part of some epic love story or something. Hollywood tends to like things very clear…good or bad girl, no in between! But I agree…it would’ve been a much juicier and more interesting film.

    • poppy says:

ita, re: marginal acting, famous for marrying royalty. slutty younger years, lol.
kidman is not even close to what GK looked like at the age the film is about. GK had a full, round face, very soft looking in her mid 30s.
kidman is just harsh with her frozen angles, weird tipped nose, and stoner red eyes. she doesn’t even look like a young GK. heck, she doesn’t even look like nicole kidman.

people love to love GK because she was in roles that are pure fantasy/aspirational with clothes, cars, locations and and leading men to boot. just fantasy.

as for the kidman vitriole, i think a lot of people really liked her in the beginning. she was unique looking, took interesting roles, looked great i clothes. then she f*cked up her face and strongly denied it. even escaping from tom cruise couldn’t get people to roll with her constant denials of messing with her face. the “hate” wouldn’t be near as bad if she had just owned it from the start. she’d be adored if she hadn’t messed with it at all, imo.

    • T.C. says:

      +100000

Grace Kelly looked older than 33 in those pictures. Nicole Kidman looks like her.

    • Kelly says:

Agreed. I do not get the fascination with Grace Kelly at all. I like Nicole Kidman a lot better actually.

  11. DanaG says:

Why didn’t they make her a blonde at least?? It looks more high budget then Diana. Naomi’s Diana was pathetic and her clothes and wig weren’t like Diana’s at all. I think Nicole just likes to work but she should have let someone else take on this role. I wonder how true to life this will be? Both Grace and her husband had many lovers and it was a loveless marriage by the end. I can imagine what their spin will be.

  12. Adrien says:

Nicole is a beautiful woman but I don’t see Princess Grace in her. It has nothing to do with her age (Princess Grace looked older than her actual age). She has no likeness with the late Princess. Should have chosen Evan Rachel Wood.

  13. Kiddo says:

I just can not like Nicole Kidman. She’s a good actress, but she’s one of those people that I have an irrational dislike for. I can’t put my finger on it, but she is completely off-putting to me.

  14. Harriet says:

I would find it super interesting to see who wins with this one- i.e. Will this even be a half decent movie compared to the Diana one?

The Diana one is soooo bad that here in England, the posters promoting it are bare. Usually they have “Breathtaking” The Times etc. When it’s a bad film the tabloids fill the void: “Unmissable” Daily Mail or “Beautifully moving” The Sun. But it is so, so, so bad that even the trashiest newspapers here are treating it like rubbish.

  15. Eleonor says:

Michael K. nailed it when he described this trailer as a parfum ad.

  16. Susei says:

the trailer shows nothing?! It´s opera music with Nicole Kidman looking like Nicole Kidman in retro clothes.

  17. Brandi says:

The only thing that was exciting was seeing that Tim Roth is in it!! Still won’t go see this in the theater though.

  18. Tessa says:

I watched Rear Window on TV the other day. Grace was spectacularly beautiful. Nicole isn’t touching her here.

  19. janie says:

I love Nichole… I’ll probably watch the movie. I do think Grace Kelly probably would not be happy at how her family has turned out!

  20. Lilyvanilli says:

I wonder if the movie touches on the weird cult Grace was involved with in her later years.

  21. Vee says:

This was bad casting from the beginning. Nicole was too old and it shows.

  22. eliza says:

I don’t get the dislike of Kidman. The way some react to her you would think she is the devil. I think she is a solid actress and I have enjoyed most of her movies. I also think she is a harmless person who loves her family and enjoys her career. What is so bad about that?

  23. Dawn says:

Okay, TMC had a Hitchcock Sunday and I re-watched Rear Window and Grace Kelly was absolutely perfection in that movie from the top her head to the bottom of her feet. Her hair was perfect, her skin was perfect, her makeup was perfect, her voice was perfect, her body was perfect and her clothes were to die for. She was so perfect in that movie that even the character played by Jimmy Stewart commented on her perfection. So I believe that there are times that perfection just needs to be left alone and this is one of those times and I love Nicole so I am in no way slighting her. Grace Kelly just happened to get it all when they rolled her gene dice.

  24. hillbillyinthecorner says:

No no no no no no no no no no no no ! Grew up loving Grace Kelly…..this is horrible like painting a orange red and trying to sell it as a apple…!!!!!
Do they even try to find someone who vaguely even looks remotely like a person they are going to play ? Grace was a cool colored blonde with bright blue eyes ..not a strawberry blonde with wonky colored bi-colored eyes.. this is worse then Lindsay Lohan as Elizabeth Taylor……

  25. Mike says:

Just screened this last night for Nielsen. It was horrendous. It didn’t know what it wanted to be was it a comedy or drama? It was like the Princess Diaries. There was no climax. There was no real issue. It was like #princessprobz. She came off as selfish and not likable by the bit. Whoever played Hitchcock did a good job but no Academy Awards here even though I have respect for Nicole Kidman’s performance. There are so many problems with this film I could go on forever!

  26. putchka says:

IMO Grace Kelly was a flawless beauty but a stiff actress, ice princess reputation (professionally), lusty slut (personally). I love that she was a lusty slut and banged all those hot Hollywood actors. I would have done the same! Agree with other comments, now that would be a great story…

  27. MissNostalgia says:

    Twin trainwrecks…Diana and Grace!

  28. Mandy says:

I do not understand this. AT ALL.

  29. Gistine says:

She looks like Nicole Kidman. :/

  30. shitler says:

Nicole used to have of the most beautiful faces in Hollywood.. What the hell happened? A young Nicole Kidman blew the oatmeal Grace out of the water

  31. taxi says:

GK had classic (except for the square jaw) & rather bland features. With 20 other lovely blonds of medium height, dressed the same, it’d been hard to pick her from the lineup. She wasn’t a great actress but her carefully built upper-crust image was novel at the time she worked. Except for Eva Marie Saint, who hit the big screen after GK, the other pretty blondes were overtly sexy. Rear Window may have been her best film.

Nicole is a fine actress but an unconvincing Grace. I’m not sure what this movie is supposed to portray, as Tim Roth is as different in appearance to Ranier as it’s possible to be. NK is way too tall. Other than Frank Langella’s mellifluous voice in the trailer, it might be a fashion shoot.

  32. RHONYC says:

Matt Damon Jr. is such a cutie pie! 😉

  33. Suzy from Ontario says:

I guess I’m in the minority, but I think Grace Kelly was absolutely beautiful and was one of the prettiest brides I’ve ever seen. I agree that she did look matronly as she aged, but with class (unless some of her children).

Nicole Kidman used to be gorgeous, but I think the botoxing and who knows what else has ruined her looks imo.

  34. Justme says:

Nicole is a good actress in the right role. But she is totally miscast in thsi role. She looks way too old to play PGrace at 33 and is all wrong for this role. Poor Nicole who so DESPERATELY wants to slow down aging (thus the frozen face), will FREAK upon hearing “too old” , but it’s truth and the reviews may send her screaming to have her face stretched even further.

You just know that NK likely gloated in past couple of weeks when her friend (but likely HUGE competitor in age and roles), Naomi got crucified over her Princess Diana movie, so it’s LOL funny that NK will also be experiencing same type of remarks.

  35. Mabs says:

Nicole just needs to start taking on grandma roles. Maybe she’d look halfway decent amid some juxtapositioning. :p

  36. miriam says:

It looks like one of her adverts. But the voiceover made it even worse. I can see this being very sycophantic.

I’m utterly perplexed to see Tim Roth is in this too, not that I noticed him in the trailer (was he there?) – I’d just assumed he’d disappeared off the face of the earth.

  37. lori says:

jaysus help us if Lohan’s Taylor ends up the best one out the the 3.

  38. sara says:

They should have went with January Jones.

  39. Bridget says:

Is it just me, or did the use digital effects to make Nicole look more like Grace in the actual film footage? She looks older in the candid production stills.

I just can’t watch Nicole anymore. She’s utterly ruined her face. Her, Courtney Cox, Tom Cruise (irony!) and even Alec Baldwin, the work they’ve done on their faces is so overboard I just can’t watch them anymore.

    • Suki2 says:

I think they did use digital effects to morph her face. It really jumped out at me in the last shot of the trailer.

  40. SpankFD says:

Forgive me but was that LIEV SCHREIBER doing the narration, as in NK’s archnemesis’ companion? If so…whoa. Cold.

  41. Snowpea says:

She looks TERRIBLE in this palaver of a flick! And I am a proud Aussie chick who LOVES NK usually.

But no, just no. This looks like a godawful vaseline on the lens, obsequiously vomit inducing malarkey! he he

Ms Kidman, you CAN do so much better! 😉

  42. Another flop says:

Ms. Kidman CANNOT do any better. She has sabotaged her career with Botox and should retire.
