Brangelina’s Oscar campaign totally worked

I might have to turn in my Brangeloonie Badge, because even I doubted that Brangelina’s Oscar campaign would work. Sure, Brad and Angelina approached the campaign differently this year – they turned on the charm, they showed off the babies and Brad’s parents, they were good film-promoting soldiers for all of their films. They gave many, many interviews, and Brad even made a trip to Oprah, always a good sign.

Brad Pitt’s Benjamin Button ruled over all nominees, with 13 in total, including a nod to the title hunk and to Taraji P. Henson in the Supporting Actress category.

It’s got to be a happy morning in the Brangelina household, as Brad’s babymama Angelina Jolie was also recognized for her work in the Clint Eastwood-directed film The Changeling. This is Angie’s first nomination since her Supporting Actress win for Girl, Interrupted.

From OK! Magazine

Still, I prepared myself for one or both of them to be snubbed. Did the Academy feel that they needed to rectify last year’s snub for Angelina’s role in A Mighty Heart? Is The Curious Case of Benjamin Button really that great a movie? Is Clint Eastwood still the best guy to know in Hollywood? A case could be made for Clint Eastwood’s influence, actually. He’s the stamp of approval for mainstream Hollywood. And it didn’t hurt that Brad and Angelina made multiple private and public appearance with Eastwood and his wife Dina throughout the year. The Academy took notice.

The question arises, however, exactly what are their chances for a victory on February 22? They’ll both probably go home empty handed. Kate Winslet’s pretty much got Best Actress locked up, and either Mickey Rourke or Sean Pean have the best chance at Best Actor. There’s always a possibility that Brad could surge at the end of this now formal Oscar campaign – Benjamin Button is the nomination leader, and Penn and Rourke could split the vote, giving the award to Brad. But for now, I think Brangelina should just be content with their successful Oscar campaign – they earned this victory the hard way!

Number of Oscar considerations lent to JA- zero. Just Sayin’.

  2. Baholicious says:

Too me, Crisco is not a good look.

  3. Anon says:

Where is Ned? this should get quite a few posts from him and the rest of the Angie and Brad are horrible people committee lol

  4. Zoe says:

ah, Kaiser, hopefully, there was a LITTLE talent involved! LOL

Did the other nominees just run good “campaigns” or did they actually earn their nods?

Lots of hard work went into these films, let’s just support them like anyone else, eh?

  5. 88modesty88 says:

Glad for the nods — doesn’t happen very often with Brad… He’s playing catch-up with Angie!

  6. DD says:

Always thought the oscars were awarded more for performance than a publicity campaign. Only watched the changeling and revolutionary road, they both gave good performances. No matter the hype for BB I can’t bring myself to see that movie, it seems too ridiculous.

  7. geronimo says:

Kaiser = naysayer. Extra polishing duties for you.

Well done to the Brange. It’s an honour, regardless of how it pans out.

  8. Kaiser says:

I really had my doubts, y’all! I thought Brad would definitely get one, but I wasn’t sure about Angie.

I’m sad that Christopher Nolan didn’t get nominated – he deserved a directing nom.

  9. Claude Yoola says:

WTF is wrong with her face these days? It looks like she’s stepping out wearing Vaseline or something.

  10. Ash says:

I think she looks stunning in that picture. Glad to see they were nominated again – but I don’t think they’ll walk away with an oscar.

  11. Kristen says:

    Dante ~

    Well said my friend!

  12. Kristen says:

Oh God not Ned or Kim……well at least we had a few moments without them. LOL

  13. Eloise says:

Her face looks odd from plastic surgery.

  14. Faye says:

am looking forward to watching the oscars…good performances for all but I don’t think either of them will win…but ya never know..

  15. Muff Diver says:

Mmmmm, Angelina is FINE! I’d go down on her all day and night. You don’t even have to pay me! I’m just sayin’

Angie needs to dump Brad and his bad acting skills and get with a hero. I say she should date Tom Cruise and get his head out of the clouds. Tom is better looking, a much better actor and is more rich than Brad. I’m just sayin’

  16. anonymous says:

I love them both, so deserving of the nominations for their great acting. Trust me if they didn’t do well they wouldn’t even get mention. Truly upset that Clint didn’t get a nomination, he was great in Gran Torino.

  17. bros says:

    Val,
WTF are you even saying? your comment makes no sense. also, stop insulting kaiser and the rest of this site and the people who post.

dante-i was thinking the same thing…wondering what JA is doing right about now…..WAIL!!!!!!!

  18. geronimo says:

Val plainly doesn’t ‘get it’, that’s all. It’s like the ‘losing streak’ headline, major sense of humour-failure. (although the accusation is particularly funny when Kaiser’s the writer!)

  19. PJ says:

Both Brad and JA have done comedy, which the Oscars ignore. No matter how well they act, “Ocean’s Eleven” stars aren’t going to get a nod.

“Button” seems overrated with 13 nominations. I haven’t seen it but the critics here gave it very tepid reviews.

  20. Cheyenne says:

13 nominations? Wow! Congrats to David Fincher, Brad Pitt, Taraji Henson and the entire CCOBB cast and crew. This is a great honor, whether they actually collect any statuettes or not.

  21. hmm says:

The only thing in the article that I take exception to is the reference to the kids because we haven’t seen their children for quite awhile. And, the Oscars is all about the campaign for everyone. If no one had any complaints about Kate Winslet winning the best supporting actress for The Reader when she was the star of the film, then they should have nothing to say about anyone else’s campaign.

  22. Mairead says:

Muff – I know you’re just sayin’, but you is out of your mind! Katie Holmes and TC being together means that they’re not out there infecting the rest of the population with their codology. *wink*

I’ve not seen Benjamin Buttons yet, but it does seem to be one of the most unusual story-lines out there for years and many of the noms will be for technical things. It does look amazing.

Where are the Voices of Skewed Morality and Pro-Wumminhood?
I wonder if there is any point in pointing out that as the Oscars are nominated and selected by their peers, that a nomination alone means that they’re not universally detested and being snubbed by Hollywood? Nope probably not, LOL.

  23. Terry says:

Kaiser, i love you, but you read Lamey too much.

  24. Syko says:

Someone insulted Kaiser? Get me my gun!

  25. Vannuccia says:

Claude Yoola, that waxy sheen she has now is from an over-use of lasers and botox, but mostly laser treatments cause the skin to look like that.

  26. DD says:

LFMAO! Tom Cruise? Brad’s a douchy poser but Tom’s a douchy psycho.

  27. ebgirl says:

Brad must really know how to campaign because I don’t think Benjamin Button was worthy. I have nothing against Brad, but I REALLY hated Benjamin Button. I thought it was a waste of 3 hours of my life, and so did the 8 other people I saw it with. LOVED Slumdog Millionaire, Milk, and Frost/Nixon, but haven’t seen the Reader yet.

  28. NotBlonde says:

If you want to watch the Curious Case of Benjamin Button but do not want to spend $20…just watch your Forrest Gump dvd. It’s basically the same story just with an aging-backwards twist. It has the same writer and director too.

There is no way in hell either of them will win. The other actors in their categories are much better and gave much better performances. Sean Penn has pretty much got Best Actor locked up. There is no way the Academy is giving an award to Mickey Rourke. The dude is an asshat and should be thankful that his little movie even got attention.

  29. Ter says:

I’ll confess I haven’t seen any of these movies yet, I’m that much of a tight wad right now. I will say that protraying someone from real life seems to be the harder role. Therefore I wish say that Sean Penn will get the nod.

  30. Kaiser says:

Bros, Geronimo, Syko – Thanks so much for the support! Now I feel like *my* Oscar campaign worked!

  31. jay says:

Being a great manipulator is something to really be proud of. Putting up all these fake fronts. I hope the Oscar people are smarter than that. I don’t think she is a talented actress…she overacts and the entire time alls I hear and see is her. She never disappears in her roles.

  32. Lily says:

No campaign. They are just talented actors.

  33. Jane says:

way to bring in JA when this thread wasn’t even remotely about her Vdan. You get annoyed with other posters when they do that, yet you think you can do it?

  34. doodahs says:

NotBlonde, I assume you were being sarcastic when you said Forrest Gump and Ben Button share the same writer/director?

  35. Cheyenne says:

The best actor award will probably go to Sean Penn, unless the academy has another fit of homophobia like they did the year they gave the best picture award to Crash instead of Brokeback Mountain, which really deserved it.

I wouldn’t say any actor or actress has anything locked up at this point.

What totally cracks me up, though, is the haters who claimed that since everyone hates Brad and Angie so much, they wouldn’t get nominated for anything, and here Angie is nominated for best actress and Brad’s movie is nominated in 13 different categories, including best picture, best director and best actor. The trolls must be in agony.

  36. geronimo says:

@Cheyanne – have to agree. I don’t expect either of the J-Ps to come away from this with a win but I’m enjoying their noms enormously because they’re obviously annoying the crap out of those who like to write the J-Ps off as loathed/despised/talentless/hated blah blah etc. Sweetly amusing!

  37. Lydia says:

I hope they’re very happy with the nominations, because, it’s all they’re going to get. Angelina has zero chances. Kate Winslet will probably take the award, and, even if she doesn’t, there are still Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway in the race.
Things are even worse for Brad. Even if Rourke and Penn cancel each other out, there’s still Frank Langella going strong there to take the award. Again, zero chances!
And, Benjamin Button will probably take only some technical awards. Slumdog Millionaire is strong as hell this year.
Well, if this couple was so beloved and talented, wouldn’t they win every award in town? They’re all looks and no substance. God knows what kind of stuff Angelina did to win that undeserving Best Supporting Actress Oscar.

  38. NotBlonde says:

I don’t recall anyone saying they wouldn’t be nominated for Oscars. I personally do not think that are that good of actors but considering the Curious Case of Benjamin Button was nominated for a crapload of other awards the would have to give it at least one acting award and Brad Pitt makes sense as he was the lead.

I suspect Angelina Jolie got nominated because there was very little else to choose from. Can anyone think of any other lead actress who deserved the nomination?
