Dakota Fanning may play pint-sized vampire in “New Moon”

twilight
The sequel to the hit teen vampire sensation “Twilight” has already had its fair share of speed bumps, with director and casting issues, but it seems those problems are now in the past. “New Moon” is in early production, and child star Dakota Fanning may have been offered a plum role as Jane, the young but terrifying leader of a vicious faction of vampires.

Dakota Fanning…with fangs?

It’s possible. I can exclusively report that the 14-year-old child star—she turns 15 on Feb. 23—is in talks to play Jane opposite Robert Pattinson & Co. in New Moon, the upcoming sequel to box office megahit Twilight.

“There were no auditions,” a source reveals. “They just offered it to her outright, and now they’re in negotiations. They’ve been going back and forth.”

Jane is a member of Italy’s Volturi, the most deadly group of bloodsucking killers in author Stephenie Meyer’s best-selling series.

In the casting notice we got our hands on earlier this month, Jane is described as a petite blonde with a “Botticelli angel-like face…[and] crimson irises.” While fellow Volturi guards Demetri & Felix “are three times the size of her, they are terrified of her,” the casting notice reads.

Coincidentally (or maybe not), an online petition started by a Twilight fan already asks the studio, Summit Entertainment, to cast Fanning because she would be “perfect” for the role.

Early last month, Entertainment Weekly suggested Pushing Daisies star and Broadway diva Kristin Chenoweth. “Her voice is certainly high enough, and at 4’11”, she’s also short enough,” writer Amy Wilkinson proposed.
Director Chris Weitz is expected to start shooting New Moon in March in the U.S. and Italy. If all goes as planned, the movie will hit theaters on Nov. 20.

Is Fanning right for Jane? We’re sure Twilight fans have plenty to say about it.

[From E!Online]

I will have to check in with my resident Twilight expert – my 13-year-old daughter – when she gets home from school to see if this is a good fit. I do know that Dakota is pushing to branch out into edgier roles now that she’s a teenager – so far it’s been difficult. Maybe this is just the role and franchise for her.

Who is Dakota?? She looks like a pint sized version of Jodie Foster. Jodie Foster’s minnie-me. I’m just sayin’

  2. Annie says:

She’s pale enough. I think she fits the look quite well.

But having never read the series or even seen the first movie, I’d have to doublecheck with my resident Twilight expert as well because as it turns out, we all seem to have at least one of those in our lives. lol

    awh just like KiKi Dunst

  4. Ash says:

She’s grown up! Very cute. I haven’t read the series either. If she gets the roll, it will be a little weird to picture her being a vampire bully. Hmm….

  5. KPC says:

She is a fantastic, little actress. They would be lucky to have her. At least she has charisma unlike princess thundercloud, Kristen Stewart. She always looks like she just soiled herself and is being forced to be an incredibly popular and wealthy, young starlet.

  6. Syko says:

I’ve read the books, I think she’d fit the part. Jane is one hellacious vampire!

  7. LondonParis says:

I read the books! I think she’d fit the role quite well, and I think she has the chops to do this and more. Love her!

  8. Annie says:

Oh yea. I mean, I have no doubt she has the talent to do it. Definitely.

She’s amazing in everything I’ve ever seen her in. And for her age, that’s astounding.

Not like overrated Hayden Panettiere. Pfft.

  9. Hollz says:

I think she’s perfect for the role 🙂

  10. Ash says:

Definitely no doubt she can take it on. Been waiting to see her in something else.

  11. Lily says:

Dakota Fanning is a versatile young actress. She is not afraid to take on new roles and change her looks. Her acting skills are amazing and will look forward to seeing this young talent in this new movie.

  12. vdantev says:

I blame you Hot Topic / Twilight kids out there for this.

  13. california angel says:

She really that natural beauty thing down for being so young. When I was her age (of course, it’s generational) I would wear oversize animal tee-shirts and neon shorts and let’s not even get into the problems with my hair. hehe.

  14. Emily says:

Oh yeah I could def. see her pulling off the part. Creepy little Jane and her creepy powers. Though Kristin Chenoweth isn’t a bad idea either.

  15. elisha says:

What did your daughter say, MSat? I’m curious to know.

  16. Aspen says:

She’s visually perfect for it…and I’d bet money she can out act both of the leading roles. 🙂 She’s be an excellent choice.

  17. brista says:

She’d be slumming it with that movie. She’s way too good of an actress to be in a stupid Twilight movie.

  18. FF says:

Oh lord, not Dakota. Her sister Elle would be a MUCH better choice though. She was great in Benjamin Button and The Nines.

I hope someone on the production team makes that mental leap. Dakota’s too well known and obvious a choice in this case – and I’m sure she’d want something more challenging.
