Jessica Alba: ‘I was a lot more critical of my body when it was awesome’

Jessica Alba

Jessica Alba covers the October issue of Health magazine to promote Machete Kills, which is her zillionth Robert Rodriguez-directed movie. He’s basically the only reason she’s still in movies. If it sounds like I’m picking on Jessica, I’m really not. She’s done wonders to build her own lifestyle company that sells practical household products without going the full Goop. Like Jessica sells things that people need (diapers, wipes, soap) for reasonable prices; Gwyneth sells useless crap (elite paper clips and ugly onesies) for the price of your quarterly grocery bill.

In this interview, Jessica does pimp her Honest business. She also talks about making it two decades in Hollywood (remember, she started young with Dark Angel). Of course the most interesting stuff she says is about her figure. She brings up the post-partum corset/girdle topic again. She also says she’s a lot less critical of her body now that it’s not perfect. At least I think that’s what she’s getting at:

On starting The Honest Company: “There were certainly moments when it was scary. The day we launched, I was like, Is anyone even going to go to our website [honest.com]? Our distribution is mainly the Internet. It took me about three years of people telling me I was crazy and that there’s no way it could ever happen before I found the partners who could balance my weaknesses.”

Her mantra: “Breathe. I swear. It’s been so hectic. And I’ve been doing more work in movies and on television lately.”

Her acting career: “This year, I’ve acted for 20 years. That’s so messed up! How did I do anything for 20 years? [Laughs] Now I don’t work just to work. To me, doing two or three days on a movie with a cool director is more important than spending my life on a set.”

A natural lifestyle works: “Yeah, I used to have a stuffy nose every morning, and once we got a HEPA filter in our main air-conditioning unit in our house, it went away. Just having clean air: crazy! Even Cash–we would both wake up, like, ‘Honk,’ blowing our noses with swollen eyes. And now we don’t.”

Be natural in one easy step: “Read labels on everything: what you’re cleaning your house with, what you’re cleaning yourself with and what you’re putting in your body. You have the power to not expose your kids or yourself to chemicals that are endocrine disruptors or allergens. You don’t need to live that way.”

Honest workouts: “I like dancing. There’s a choreographer I used on a couple of movies, JJ Dancer [aka Jennifer Johnson]; her dance moves are so fun, so it doesn’t feel like you’re working out. And I like interval training on a treadmill, with sprinting and then uphill walking, then sprint, then uphill walk, then sprint. This morning I did sprint intervals with a high-incline walk. Otherwise I get bored–I can’t just do the same thing over and over.”

What’s in her green drink? “I normally do one with kale, spinach, green apple, blueberries, ginger, cucumber and celery. So this has all of that but also tomato and turmeric and pear. I blend with the skin and everything. There’s only so many times that you can wake up, get right into the grind and all of a sudden it’s dinner, a glass of wine…and then two. Then you go to bed, wake up tired and it starts all over again. I just felt like I was in a rut. So now I’m waking up, working out right away and doing juice.”

Her changing body image: “I was a lot more critical of my body when it was probably pretty awesome. It’s like, why did I not ever wear jean shorts? That’s so crazy. I was so skinny! I didn’t have any cellulite…what was I thinking?! I was more willing to wear short skirts after I had my kids. I never wore them before. Ever. I was so self-conscious. But I remember I was 28 or 29, at an MTV award thing, and my girlfriend Kelly was like, ‘You should wear a short skirt, because you are not going to be this age forever.’ Now I’m a lot more confident in my skin–because who cares? At the end of the day, it’s so much time spent on something that really doesn’t matter that much.”

The best way to relax: “A bath after the kids go to sleep. I put in a bag of Epsom salts or Honest Bubble Bath, and sometimes I’ll watch TV or sometimes I’m on my iPad on Pinterest. There is no way that taking a bath is fun when the kids are awake, because they want to get in, too, and they’re for sure peeing in it!”

Juicing doesn’t do it for me. I don’t care to drink my calories unless the beverage is alcoholic. Give me some food, you know? Eating is much more pleasurable than drinking IMO. I wish I could get with the juicing program but accept it will never happen. Props to Jessica in that department. I do think she’s a little bit nutty by thinking plastic toys can be aired outside to make them safer. The rest of the stuff she does to improve her home’s environment sounds reasonable.

Do we buy what Jessica’s saying about her shifting body image? I remember reading how she was shocked by having to work out to lose the baby weight. She scheduled some silly Campari calendar shoot a few months after giving birth to Honor. At the time, she described working out as the hardest thing ever. I guess she’s changed her mind.

Here are some photos of Jessica with Cash, Honor, and Haven yesterday. They were attending an LA birthday party. The girls are so cute.

Maybe she should air out her brain along with the plastic toys.

  2. Lilyvanilli says:

Has Haven lost her red hair?

  3. Pastyousayyouneverknew says:

When it was “awesome”? I remember reading an interview where she talked about her “hotness” and she sounded so full of herself. Girl really seems to believe her own hype.

    • Esmom says:

Meh, I give her a pass because I think I know what she means. I tended to be more critical of my body before I had kids. And in retrospect I realized I didn’t need to be so critical once I experienced how much harder it is to get in/stay in shape after kids.

I agree about “real food” being much more satisfying than juice (or energy bars for that matter, which I loathe). Although her green juice thing sounds pretty good. I’d drink it and then probably eat a plate of pasta.

      • lisa says:

i know i thought i was a mess when i was 18 and i would love to be that “mess” again.

i love a kale shake for breakfast, because i hate breakfast and would rather skip it. so the kale shake is a win win. i also like one when im busy running errands all day saturday and wouldnt eat otherwise. but i wouldnt have juice for dinner.

    • TWINK says:

I’m indifferent about Alba but it’s better to be “I’m hot and I know it” than fake modesty!

    • Yup, Me says:

What is wrong with her acknowledging that her body was/is amazing? I think women, in general, would benefit from making a few more self-celebratory statements rather than griping about women who do.

But then, I openly acknowledge my own fabulousness without a lick of shame. Maybe that’s why I wasn’t bothered by her statement.

    • Abby says:

I think about the stuff I wore when I was 108 pounds with an “awesome” body and I’m like… why didn’t I show it off more? Why didn’t I wear bikinis? Now I’m 8 months pregnant, with cellulite and everything and I’m sad because I probably lost the chance to look good in short shorts. Shoulda done it when I was younger! So I can see what she’s saying. Even though she still looks “awesome.”

  4. LB says:

I did a juice cleanse. It isn’t worth the trouble I had with it. The only benefit was it taught me how to make some delicious smoothies/juices and served as a reminder that if I’m not too hungry, I could just have one of those instead. But I would never do it again as a total body cleanse.

  5. shelley says:

She is so talentless. Pretty can only get you so far..and her stop was a long time ago

  6. Kate says:

She annoys me a lot more than Goop. Goop’s pretension is at least entertaining, Jessica’s just painfully dull and humorless.

  7. Anna says:

It’s easy to hate on your body in teens and early 20s, pre-kids. You’re competing with a whole bunch of other hot young girls. But to have the body she has now, after 2 kids, and after 30 – this is remarkable. It IS a body of a 20-yo. So it’s easier to compare and be like, this is great!

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

Seriously. Your body is still awesome, Jessica, stop bitching.

She looks amazing IMO. Can’t act worth a damn, but she’s a very pretty woman.

  8. Dhavynia says:

It’s a good thing she is into her company because her acting would’ve never gotten her far.

IMO she looks better now than when she was a lollipop with playdough looking lips

  9. LILOU says:

To be honest I have never thought she had an amazing body.

I mean people used to describe her as a girl with “curves”. Call me crazy but everytime I saw pictures of her in a bikini, I wasn’t impressed. Her butt was flat, her waist wasn’t that thin and her boobs weren’t that big!

I think her body is way better now!!

So she souldn’t be to hard on herself….

  10. grabbyhands says:

Please try to be less obvious-she knows that she still looks good, so the false note of “oh, my body USED to look awesome” is grating. Maybe she would have fewer stress lines if her company spent less time going after independent bloggers who happened to have the same word in their title.

  11. NeNe says:

In my eyes, she is so yesterdays news. Yawn!!

  12. mkyarwood says:

She’s talking about Blue Crush, which is the last time Kate Bosworth’s body was any good. I was a lot more critical of my body back when it was young and nubile too. Now, I wear rompers if it’s too hot. SO THERE.

  13. janie says:

She’s cute enough & I’m glad she was smart enough to start a business, acting is not her strong suit. Her girls are adorable!

  14. lucy2 says:

That kind of talk always sounds like fishing for compliments to me.

It sounds like her company is doing well though, and good for her.

  15. Sonya says:

I tend to roll my eyes whenever celebrities talk about body images and not needing perfection. It’s all pretentious regurgitation of whatever their agents told them to say to the masses. It’s not actually what they think–If they believed a damn word they said–they wouldn’t diet and work out like mad to maintain the unattainable bodies they claim they don’t ‘need’ to have, would they?

  16. nanalu says:

It’s a given, she is a pretty girl and BORING!!!!!!

But she seriosuly “TOOTS HER OWN” A lot for my taste.

Not a good actress.. she is not a natural on camera when making movies, her acting capabilities are definitely not there.

She really needs to invest in some acting lessons!

  17. BeachingIt says:

She’s still so gorgeous! Her acting chops may not be that great, but she’s obviously got some sort if smarts for business( or at least surrounding herself with the right people). Good on her! Her body looks crazy good on the cover.

  18. Mar says:

She is pretty and stylish but so bland

  19. anon says:

I could never do juicing on a daily basis, however my roommate did a juice cleanse for a few days and she had so much energy and felt so good and cleaned her system out, so I think i might do it for a few days. But yes I can’t give up food..

Maybe juice cleanse every few months is good..

  20. ZAK says:

I don’t dislike Alba and I’m happy for her that she seems like she is in a good place but I’m tired of talentless actors like her getting magazine covers.

  21. umyeah says:

She is so boring. Her acting sucks so she decides to do this line of products, which all suck btw. I’ve used a bunch of the stuff and they all molded, went bad, or plain just didn’t work. Nice try, Jessica.

  22. Lindsey says:

I love green smoothies as a way to get in like, at least my 5-a-day.

  23. Shelly says:

Newsflash to Jessica – your body is still awesome. You are, however, boring.

  24. GMon says:

Despise this woman beyond words. Talentless is an understatement. Why is she even a thing? And on magazine covers to boot…just ugh.

  25. IceQueen says:

    What’s wrong with it now?

  26. DGO says:

She’s had a lot of work done, both pre and post pregnancies, including boob jobs, a nose job, lipo, and tummy tucks. I don’t like her false modesty. She still thinks she’s the ish.

  27. Norman says:

I think JA is fine. She has her own thing she does besides acting. She is one of the hottest women on the planet. What star looks this good after two kids?
