Michelle Rodriguez on her sexuality: ‘I’ve gone both ways. I do as I please’

Michelle Rodriguez has been asked many, many times if she’s a lesbian. She’s always denied the rumors, sometimes denying the rumors in a rather dismissive, almost offensive way. But the rumors have persisted because A) a lot of people don’t think much further than “she wears pants” and “she’s not a girly-girl” and B) Michelle has had a few seemingly close, intimate relationships with women. But now Michelle is finally nailing down some specifics about her sexuality, and she’s basically saying that we’ve been asking her the wrong question this whole time. She’s NOT a lesbian. She’s bisexual.

After years of having fans speculate over her sexuality, Michelle Rodriguez is putting the rumors to rest. In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, on stands now, the 35-year-old Fast & Furious 7 actress opens up about her love life and says she understands why her fans are curious.

“I’ve never walked the carpet with anyone, so they wonder: What does she do with her vagina?” she tells EW. “Plus, I play a butchy girl all the time, so they assume I’m a lesbo.”

Are their assumptions correct? “Eh, they’re not too far off,” Rodriguez says. “I’ve gone both ways. I do as I please. I am too f–king curios to sit here and not try when I can. Men are intriguing. So are chicks.”

The Machete Kills star has been rumored to have dated Fast and the Furious costar Vin Diesel, S.W.A.T costar Olivier Martinez (Halle Berry’s now husband and baby daddy) and Bloodrayne actress Kristanna Loken. At the 2011 premiere of Battle Los Angeles, Rodriguez was asked by Rumorfix to clarify gay rumors. “I’m not a lesbian . . . yeah,” she said, and joked, “Michi likes sausage.”

In the Summer 2013 issue of Cosmopolitan for Latinas, Rodriguez said she wasn’t dating anyone at the time. “I’m attracted to manly men,” she said. “I can’t do metrosexuals who get their nails done more than me. Which is why, living in L.A. for eight years, you can’t blame me for not having a partner!”

[From Us Weekly]

Is this surprising? Not really. I took her at her word that she “liked sausage” but I also thought she had probably dated some ladies along the way too. Looks like I was right! I think this is common enough, especially among women – Michelle is “mostly” into men, but sometimes a lady will strike her fancy and she doesn’t have any issue with exploring all of her options. Good for her.

    Who needs labels anyway..

If wearing pants and not being a girly-girl makes you a lesbian than sign me up. I operate in jeans and t-shirts 80% of the time, it’s about being comfortable ya as-holes.

    • TG says:

Yes me too! My mom forced me to wear dresses and skirts from first thru fifth grades, when basically we rebelled and refused. So I have had an aversion to dresses ever since.

I have to say I have always thought Michelle Rodriguez is smoking hot. Wish I looked boyish and hot at the same time.

    • MonciaQ says:

Agreed. Guess I have to tell my husband he’s a lady because it’s a clear day on Ferenginar if I’m in a dress.

    • I Choose Me says:

Hear, hear! I’m most comfortable in a pair of jeans and a nice t-shirt. I’ve got maybe two skirts and one dress in my entire wardrobe.

As for Michelle I figured she was bisexual but it irks me that people kept hounding her for a response to the rumors. Why do people HAVE to know? So they can say they were right? Let those who want to be a role model/advocate for LGBT issues do so in their own way and leave the rest to their privacy.

      • Kate says:

        I’m so with you ladies
my mother dressed me in the pretty dresses, frilly socks, hair in place etc. when she finally let me dress myself; I wore jeans, tops and tennis shoes. as an adult I still go for comfort

  3. Talullah says:

I think its the other way around Kaiser. She is mostly into women and sometimes a man strikes her fancy.

    • LizEJ says:

Definitely – she’s in NYC a lot (does she live there?) and a lot of ppl I know have bumped into her and her girlfriend or female dates at restaurants and events.

Its none of your business if she likes guys over girls or vice versa. She says shes bisexual and that should be the end of speculation on this totally irrelevant topic.

      • StaCat1 says:

totally agree. It’s disappointing that she would ever need to clarify. Who’s business is it?

      • Bibi says:

She doesnt have to clarify. She herself chooses to do so, so thats on her. WE have bigger stars such as George Clooney and Joseph Gordon Lewitt who just doesnt answer the question. And we have Jodie Foster who didnt deny or confirm throughout a long career. Michelle answered and thats why people are talking about it.

  4. YoYo says:

This is like when Ricky Marting gradually came out. First stern denials of any gayness then i am bisexual and then finally comes out as a gay. Lets see in 5-10 years what she id’s as.

    • Samtha says:

That was my first thought as well, but then it made me uncomfortable. People who are bisexual have their sexuality denied SO OFTEN–told either they’re really closeted lesbians/gay or that they’re straight and confused (or greedy).

I don’t know. I guess I’ll take her at her word.

      • Dee says:

I think its strikes a chord because she denied it so hard before. It always raises an eyebrow when someone issues pissed off denials.

      • V4Real says:

@Dee I don’t think she denied it. She made in very clear in the above article that people were asking the wrong questions. They asked if she was gay or a lesbian and she said no. She was right, she’s bisexual. Ricky Martin claimed to be straight not bi. Some people believe you can only be one or the other and that’s the furthest thing from the truth. I may prefer one gender over the other but if I’m sexually attracted to both then I’m bi.

      • YoYo says:

I see what you are saying and you may be right but i dont understand why she had issued these stern denials in the first place. Its not that long ago ( last year) she denied that she had been with women. She has repeatedly denied this so thats why my thoughts immediatly went to ricky martin. I wouldnt have felt the same if she had kept quiet JGL style. I also dont think being bisexual hampers a career in the same way in which being gay does. It wouldnt have hurt her career to say what she says now years ago. Many actresses in hollywood say they are bisexual and have better careers than her.

      • Anna says:

@VReal. She went out of her way to clear up gay rumors.

At the premiere of her new film Battle L.A., Michelle Rodriguez was asked by Rumorfix if there were any rumors she’d like to clear up.

Said Rodriguez: “I’m not a lesbian….yeah. Michi likes sausage.”

        Uber defensive.

      • V4Real says:

@yoyo oh I see. I didn’t catch the interview where she straight out denied, I only know about the ones where she was asked if she was a lesbian or gay.

But the question is offensive. Who gives someone the right to ask another person about their sexual orientation. Perhaps that’s why some celebs would say that’s a private matter or just lie about it. It’s their right to decide when or if they want the public to know. She’s not the one bringing the topic of that matter up, it’s the interviewers and such. They target her because of how they view her and she’s not known for who she dates. They have started to do the same with Jessica Chastain. You don’t hear reporters asking Taylor Swift if she’s into women because they assume she is not because of her serial dating. As for Michelle’s career I don’t think her coming out would impact it much. She has always played the tough girl roles in which she doesn’t have a romantic partner except in F&F and The Breed.

I don’t put all my business on C/B but when people in my circle ask about my preference I jokingly say I’m straight but I might bend a little if the opportunity presents itself. 🙂

      • Anna says:

In the quote provided she wasnt asked about gay rumors, she was asked if there was any rumors she would like to clarify and she felt the need to say she liked “sausage” and isnt a lesbian. I find that to be defensive. And its not the first time she railed against gay rumors. I doubt you will ever find Chastain become that defensive. There is also the fact that her rumored ex, Loken pretty much outed them and has alluded to the fact that they broke up because Michelled didnt want to be seen as gay.

Note by Celebitchy: banned multiple nicks
What the hell is this hostility I keep reading against Bi or Lez women?!!

Lots of now Out guys denied being gay at some point. Infact its quicker to identify men who didNOT deny being gay. And yet when they come out, nobody trawls their history for denials, some of which are super offensive. For instance, Wentworth Miller claimed that the gay rumors were a result of gay men wanting to sleep with him and therefore manufacturing the rumor.

We forgive these denials because we know how complex sexuality is. We know that the person may have suffered some personal shame over it. Or been afraid to “disappoint” family members.

But for some reason women struggling with coming to terms with their sexuality are fair game. What homophobic/biphobic bs. Guys victimise queer dudes so its no surprisr that women would attack queer women.

      • ProudBisexual says:

You are over reacting. It was merely pointed out that her gradual coming out mirrors Ricky Martins up to a point and it would be interesting to see where she is in a few years. I dont understand where you read hostility in that. The hostility would be as much in the people who found it offensive that one should suggest she is gay and doesnt like a bit of “sausage” as she is so elegantly calls it. If memory serves me right there were a whole bunch of people insisting that she is totally straight on previous posts about her as if it were some kind of offense to suggest such a thing merely because she herself claimed to like men. It wouldnt be surprise me if those are the same people who are so offended that some people think she might be a lesbian even if she says she is bisexual.

      • V4Real says:

@Anna but that’s my point and you just proved it by adding her quote. She said she’s not a lesbian she likes sausage. A lesbian is a woman who prefers only women so therefore she is not a lesbian, she is bi. She, like some of us like to have our cake and eat it too. She denied being a lesbian, that’s not a lie if she likes both sexes. Now if she had said I only like sausage you would have a point.

I can understand her being defensive; I would probably be as well if a reporter was only intetested in my sexual preference and after being asked the same question over and over by various people. How would we feel if we were asked about something that private over and over again.

      • Leo says:

VReal. Sorry but Anna is right she has firmly denied being anything but straight, This has been going on for years. She could have saved herself the long ass denial freak-out letter she had on her site a couple years back.

      • V4Real says:

Leo where did she straight out say I’m straight? Saying I’m not a lesbian or gay or like men is not denying. Where did she say I only date men?

Also why does she have to answer that question to anyone? If she denied being bi that’s her right. Who are we to force someone to come out?.

      • ChicagoGirl says:

Samtha is right. Bisexuality is invisible, denied, criticized. Bisexuals are assumed to be straight or gay until we make the “I am” statement. And many, many of us deny who we are because of the stereotypes. Folks, please just let her self-identify.

      • Oli says:

Not really. When a person first says they are straight then changes it to bisexual, its valid to ask if she may say something different later on. Its nothing to do with invisible bisexuals or anything negative like that. Purely down to a person who keeps moving the goalpost and therefore may seem a little wishy washy. To be fair i dont think anyone is not “letting” her self id. She spoke about it and people comment, Its what happens on a gossip site, chill out.

    • Nono says:

Ah, the sweet taste of bi erasure with my coffee in the mornings.

    • Kim1 says:

I have never heard Ricky Martin say he is Bisexual. Since he announced he was Gay he has stated he is attracted to women also but he considers himself Gay. Michelle did not label herself

      • Anna says:

@kim1 He did before he said he is gay. I quote ” my heart could belong to a woman or a man.” (2009)

      • Rosie says:

Note by Celebitchy: banned multiple nicks
Many men CAN form romantic connections with women. Plus he may be bisexual leaning on the gay end of the scale, which really isnt unusual.

      • Asiyah says:

I think the reason why Ricky identifies as gay is because he said he fell in love with a man. So while he is sexually and physically attracted to both, he is choosing to identify with his heart and not with his sexuality.

      • Kim1 says:

My heart can belong to a woman or a man is not saying I’M A BISEXUAL my comment said he has never said Im bisexual.

    • Lucy Goosey says:

Sometimes it takes a while to figure it out for yourself, let alone announce it to the world. It is a process and not just a PR one.

I am bisexual and went through all the same phases. This same set of phases applies to all tranisitions as well as accepting death. There is denial (No, not me!), anger (How dare you suggest that is me!), bargaining (Ok, I will allow that that is me a little bit), depression (Oh my God, they are right, that IS me) and finally acceptance. Millions of people go through this same process but thankfully without having to answer to the press and the media.

I can’t imagine having to go through it in Hollywood, especially since once a celeb is identified with a sexual orientation it seems they no longer have a name. Every article from now on will simply identify them as “switch-hitter” and “bisexual beauty.”

  5. Rhiley says:

I have never read an interview with her before, but have always found her attractive. And then I read this interview, and now I do not find her attractive at all. Avril Lavigne (sp?)is far more thoughtful and articulate than this “chick.”

    • Esmom says:

Agreed, my son and will always love her as Ana Lucia on Lost, but I was taken aback by her tone. Maybe it’s a tough-girl act?

    • Rosie says:

Note by Celebitchy: banned multiple nicks
Her appeal is in not giving a flying phuck. Love her.

      • Anna says:

if she had such a devil may care attitude she would have been honest about this ages ago. Not giving a flying phuck is a pose.

      • Rosie says:

Note by Celebitchy: banned multiple nicks
Its none of your business who she falls in love with or sleeps with.

      • ProudBisexual says:

Then dont comment. Her many conflicting statements on her sexuality does suggest she cares.

  6. Ella says:

“I’ve gone both ways. I do as I please. I am too f–king curios to sit here and not try when I can. Men are intriguing. So are chicks.”

Ha ha I love this answer soooo much. It’s not that serious, you fall for who you fall for.

  7. Erinn says:

She looks like a crazy person in some of those photos. I don’t know. I find her kind of crass.

I wikied her – she’s a repeat drunken driver, has been charged with hit and run, didn’t complete her community service, and has assault charges as well.

    Classy lady.

  8. Lisa says:

I’m glad she’s sharing her sexuality but I can’t stand her after those slut-shamey comments she made a few months back.

  9. Danny says:

I wouldnt be surprised if she is gay but at least she isnt getting angry like she used to when people say she likes women. Thats a step forward. I found her behavior really regressive previously.

  10. Dhavynia says:

Why is this an issue? Because she’s never been seen attached to someone’s belly button? Who cares? !
I do agree with the hollywood comment though, seems like men there spend a lot of time loving themselves or looking to hook up with the next Barbie doll so they can make them look better (with the exception of JGL)

  11. Dana says:

    + 1
She has really bad track record.

  12. James says:

More interesting gay news of a more relevant pop culture person is: Jodie Foster has a new girlfriend. Its all over the news, surprised celebitchy didnt cover that, as Rodriguez is a minor celeb and actress in comparison to hollywood legend Jodie Foster.

  13. Nono says:

    I don’t think anyone’s surprised.

  14. Sloane Wyatt says:

Go on with your Bi self, Mitchie! Enjoy your sausage and muffin.

I’m shipping hard on MRod and ABeard. THAT would make a stunning red carpet photo.

  15. Dean says:

It’s a combination of her background (hispanic Jehovah’s witness… homophobic) and delusional belief that her career could get somewhere and she’d stop getting typecastl if the continuous rumors that she’s a lesbian went away. Remember how the press reported she beat her girlfriend up and she goes around like a 14 year old boy on sets talking about how she wants some pussy? Pretty but repulsive.

  16. Daz says:

She set my gaydar of with that sausage statement. What other straight woman has ever said they like sausage? It’s the equivalent of jumping on Oprah’s couch, it’s an overkill statement.

  17. Katy says:

At this point I don’t care that she is or isnt lesbian, straight or bisexual. She is a wretched “actress”….who still manages to get work. Ugh

  18. Fan says:

She is naturally beautiful. She is one that can look beautiful without even trying. What a gift from God.

  19. Happy21 says:

I like her almost as I like Pink. She has a great who give a flying phuck attitude.

And really, I think it’s so stupid when interviewers ask the sexual preference question. REally? Does this society in which we live still care what someone’s preferences are? Sure it’s interesting to see people come out but do we CARE?

    • Ginger says:

I’m with you. Asking someone their sexual preference is rude unless A. You know them well and personally and B. You are interested in dating them otherwise it’s no ones business. P.s. Michelle is a believable action star… Maybe that’s her range as an actress and her niche. It doesn’t mean she’s “horrible” what’s horrible is watching a chick in an action flick that isn’t believable.

  20. Vl says:

Always liked her a lot as an actress and even tho I tend to favour shy librarians, I do find her very attractive.

Recently thought about her as watched Riddick and couldn’t help but think that she should’ve played “Dahl” (played by Katee Sackhoff -more known as “Starbuck” in the Battlestar G remake).

  21. Pip says:

I had hoped this girl was straight because she is insane. We don’t need another crazy gay person giving us a bad name. I’d throw her back to the straights.

  22. Leo says:

I found her quite attractive back when she first started – a cute little Latina butch. But once she started going out of her way to tell the world that he wasn’t gay and railing against anyone that said so –Kristanna Loken, Curve and Afterellen, mostly– she became an ugly, ugly person. The seeker in search of enlightenment thing that she does on her blog and Twitter is pretty gross in light of her anger issues and repeated drunkdriving.

  23. Kim1 says:

    Maybe she isn’t Gay
Maybe she is Bisexual or Pansexual

  24. Amanda G says:

She doesn’t want to label herself. That’s ok and it’s no ones business. Love her!
