Above is the new music video for Britney Spears’ new single “Work Bitch”. This is the supposed “dance anthem” that will blow away Katy Perry and Lady Gaga, I guess. I covered it when the full track came out – go here to review. My assumption was that they would make a solid dance video for the single. But we got this mess instead. Shall we analyze? Let’s do it.
First 30 seconds: Britney in the desert, a Lamborghini driving around aimlessly, Britney sitting at a mirror… WTF? And the lack of dancing is off-putting. It’s like all Britney knows how to do these days is just put her arms out and sway.
0:37: Okay, her body looks pretty great.
0:45: Oh, she’s actually dancing now, not just posing.
1:00: Notice all the really fast edits, though? That’s because she’s not keeping up with the backup dancers.
1:10: Her weave is looking especially good in this video. I mean, I can still tell it’s a weave, but at least it’s not matted Barbie hair.
1:30: Now she’s inside, thank God. I was worried the whole video was going to be Britney dancing in the desert.
1:40: I don’t get the whip/riding crop stuff. It’s like it has no association to the song and the whip isn’t important to the “story” of the video.
2:15: Her body really does look great. This is the best she’s looked in a long time.
2: 25: Holy crap, are those hammerhead sharks?!
3:00: My favorite costume is the yellow bustier and the black slacks. That actually is a hot look.
3:25: The inverted triangle and the back-up dancers on a leash? I feel like this is some Da Vinci Code crap.
3:30: WORK BITCHES ON FIRE.
Yeah… this was slightly better than Britney’s videos the past few years, but at this point, they’ve set the bar pretty low. The video overall feels dated and silly and like Britney can’t dance anymore, but still… I’d rather watch this as opposed to most of Rihanna’s videos.

Britney’s body looks good because the image is elongated to make her look thinner. There’s a lot of trickery in this video, but her fans won’t be seeing it because they’ll be too busy clapping to its “epicness.”

I think that this is above and beyond anything that’s been done before in history. The lyrics make Shakespeare look like a clumsy child (that bitch better work on his writing!), the “melody” is better than anything that the likes of Donizetti, Verdi or Mozart ever perpetrated (those bitches better work on their composing!), and Britney is the ultimate example of talent, natural beauty and sophistication.
Mariah, Whitney and Céline? Who are those bitches? They’d better work to be comparable to Britney!

Totally agree with everything you said. I was noting the fast edits/quick changes before even reading the CB recap. She was not on beat with the other dancers at all, her legs weren’t very high in the air, etc. Also, the desert portion looks an awful lot like Christina bag in the ass chaps day.
She looks good, for the most part. I do think she is in shape even if they were doing camera tricks to make her look taller and thinner.
I do love the black pants with the yellow top.
However, most of the imagery had me scratching my head. Is she trying to be controversial with the whole S&M thing? That was just weird. If is supposed to be a preview of what she’s offering at PH, I can see why the ticket sales have been down. I really don’t think she can actually do a dance show for what, 90 minutes or something?
I’m over Britney. She looks good but if I’m in the mood for a video with a marginal vocalist who can pull off hot choreography, I’ll stick to Cheryl Cole.

Britney blew out her knee in 2004 or 2005 and had surgery (maybe multiple surgeries) to repair it. She hasn’t danced the same since.

Perhaps it’s her psych condition (whatever that actually is…) or, perhaps it would have been a case of MacCauley Culkin syndrome..some people have it when they are very young, but that “it” doesn’t translate into adulthood…I think that about Lohan (even though she screwed herself up), Brooke Shields, and other child stars over the years who were never as charming/talented/beautiful as grown adults as they were as kids. And, clearly…Brit started as a kid. Maybe her spark was dimmed by her mental issues, or maybe it still would have lessened on it’s own. (And yes, all of the above mentioned child stars still had talent as adults..it just somehow wasn’t the SAME.) Madonna stands out, not because she is the most talented bitch ever, but because she stayed physically able to BRING IT, and didn’t always recycle the same old crap, year after year.
All of the above plus I don’t think she has the mental capacity to remember the choreography either. Her Vegas show is going to be a disaster.

To me, whatever Britney had in the late 90’s and early 2000’s that made her “hot”- it’s gone. She’s not sexy to me anymore, and I think the last time I thought she was, it was her “Toxic” video.
Maybe I just know too much about her now, and can’t look past it…but she always seems to be firing on half of her cylinders these days. Not awful- but then, there’s very little decent competition these days.

In my opinion, I think they finally got her meds cocktail right. The recent interviews and this video have her as almost back to her normal self and not so out of it. Bi Polar and the meds that go along with it, take sometime to balance out. It’s creating a recipe and you have to mess with the ingredients and measurements of those ingredients before it’s “right” for that pallete/person.
I am obsessed with this song. I love it so much! Britney looks fantastic in this video, but I was expecting some hardcore dance moves in it, and I feel really let down. This song deserves some epic dancing, not this weird vid.

This song is pretty catchy – so it will probably totally become a dance hit. I wish she didn’t have to be so medicated, but if that’s what keeps her functioning then do what you gotta do. I will say – I saw her recent interview announcing the Vegas deal and that was the most lucid, quick-witted, non-robotic that I’ve seen her be in a long time. So good for her.

It has to be so hard for Britney, seeing people go crazy about how amazing she looks… When it was just a trick of editing, that was necessary because that’s not what she looks like.
It has to be bad for her self esteem, knowing they *had* to go to those lengths (all the editting/smoke & mirrors) to make her look ‘good’ to others, perhaps making her think she doesn’t look ‘good’ as just herself. I also think the way she looks on her own time is deliberate compared to her video persona, so as to retain her sense of self vs. the Britney that people always want/see/never leave alone. Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, and Kesha aren’t natural born dancers but their music still sells. People are overly critical of Britney’s dancing because of how good she used to dance. The video sucked! I am tired of over sexualized high paid girls making videos and people saying it’s good. Brit-Brit has had a good video since Toxic or even My Prerogative. That’s just really dull. I actually liked that video she did with the ex-fiance/manager; it was fun and had a story. Standing in one place and waving your arms is not dancing and it just generally doesn’t seem like much fun.
This video brought out the fire in her because it’s obvious commentary on her enslavement by the industry. She needs to go more in this fierce direction, she will only improve the more she does, a coming back to life so to speak. She’s needed a rebellious outlet for years, I think that was what her breakdown was about, but it was too self sabotaging to suffice. And it’s most fitting for her to use her music, the thing that enslaved her, to ultimately rebel with. It will bring back the f*cks she has not given for a long time now, I think. I hope she has realized that, changes her handlers when need be, and keeps giving the industry a giant fuck you. She is legendary enough on her own now that she doesnt need to ‘work, bitch’ for the industry, to stay relevant. It’s time that they be her bitch. I hope she truly realises that and this isn’t a blip, because that is precisely what she’s needed to do for years.
Brit Brits problem has always been that she has been too humble and modest for her situation. She was indoctrinated from an early age to think she was the property. No one deserves to be a Diva more than she does. It’s just a matter of her breaking through her inclination to be passive and take charge. Her image employs them. She is the one that these people work for — not the other way around (re: her as the dominatrix/puppeteer etc). There is a lot to take from this video and song if you pay attention.

Angie, I love your take. A lot of older people — older women in particular — don’t give Brit the credit she deserves because, why? They’re used to a particular kind of enslavement. So when they see her busting out with “Baby One More Time,” which in the end was an empowering song about how FEMALE DESIRE mattered too. That SHE was willing to go to great lengths for a guy — when they see that on display, they freak out.
And now the older crowds are trying to put her down for the Work Bitch video, when it’s also an empowering message: that women can take charge too.
You bet that when the sexist fools in the music industry hear the lyrics, “Keep your head high, fingers to the sky. They gon’ try to try ya, but they can’t deny ya,” they know exactly what she’s saying. She’s saying they’re not going to hold her, and other women like her, down anymore.
Young women get that message and the fan reaction to this video has been PHENOMENAL, but older women don’t hear it and they try to put her down.

im from europe, i often go out to the clubs. in europe, dance electronic music like this is very “in” for decades, now it finaly arrived in the US, thanks to David Guetta. So as someone who knows this music scene, if i can say it like this is, the sound, well its very typical electro dance you can hear every weekend in european elctro clubs (and there are better songs than this). so the sound to me sounds very simylar to many other house/Dance tracks ive heard before so the song to me is very hmmm sounds like a copy of a old dancetrack, ive heard this sound before. She looks good but i doubt she will look very long like this but thats ok, she changed.

She always looks so happy when she’s spending time w/just them, which I think is what keeps her mentally/emotionally ‘grounded’, even while dealing w/the difficult treatment/medications she has to take for her mental health.
I do think, at public events like the Smurfs 2 premiere, that she has trouble expressing herself comfortably while she’s with her kids in a ‘professional setting’, always looking more ‘awkward’, like she’s not sure where she’s supposed to be focusing her attention (or which she’s supposed to be, Popstar persona or mom). But I don’t think that means she’s struggling as a Mom. =)
Did they switch her meds? She has seemed more present lately? Or maybe that ex-fiance was the problem. That song is god awful though. She sounds like a chipmunk…and still can’t dance.

Not only does she look simply gorgeous but I love the song and video!! Sooo glad to see her back in the saddle again as I’ve missed her!! I can’t believe how critical you people are on here, does anyone pick apart all of the other videos out there?? Techno/dance music is big in alot of clubs so I can see this being huge. I liked the message of the song/video as well, that if you want something don’t depend on some man to get it for you, work bitch!!! haha I just hope she’s happy and doing what she enjoys.
