Hailee Steinfeld shows off her thick, blunt bangs in Paris: adorable or traumatic?

Here are some photos from the Paris photocall for Ender’s Game, that sci-fi young adult movie starring Hailee Steinfeld, Harrison Ford and Ben Kingsley. I don’t really have an opinion of the movie – I haven’t read the book and I think the trailers for the film make it look really stupid, but what do I know? I am interested in talking about Hailee though.

We just talked about Hailee last week when she attended the premiere of Romeo and Juliet – go here to see those photos. Hailee is all of 16 years old (she’ll be 17 in December). She’s got a lot of buzz, some endorsement/modeling gigs and more work than most women ten years older. She’s very pretty, and she’s got a tall, coltish model-type look. And now she’s just added blunt-cut bangs to her look. Sigh…

You know how I feel about bangs and bangs trauma. My general rule is that thick, blunt-cut bangs are always bad. Some women can pull them off but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they SHOULD. Which is where I am with Hailee at the moment. Do the bangs make her look awful? Absolutely not – she’s still a very beautiful young woman. I just think she looked much better without them. I think these particular bangs look rather dated, like she’s two seconds away from flat-ironing them and spraying them with AquaNet (ask your mother about it).

Also: what in the world is happening with those SARONG PANTS?!?!?

PS… Harrison Ford looks pretty good here, right?

She looks like Carly Rae Jepsen.

  2. Farzi says:

She must have just got the bangs freshly cut – they do not look like they’re sitting properly and almost look thicker on the left side. They are also a little long. To pull off this look, straight thick bangs just below the eyebrow work well. Also – LOVE Ben Kingsley.

  3. mytbean says:

The Bangs aren’t so bad. But I hate bangs because what a pain in the butt to grow out. Maybe they’re an amazing clip in?

Kingsley appears to be channeling Gru from Despicable Me.

I’m in love with her galaxy pants.

    • QQ says:

Right?!? Me Too I actually think they are pretty bad ass! And for a sci-fi movie premiere?! Life!

  5. Kiddo says:

They all look good. It’s refreshing.

I think that if you have a long forehead and think hair bangs can look fabulous and Hailee has them. I do not know why Kaiser thinks that thick bags are bad, does everybody feel that way.

    • magpie says:

No Kaiser hates bangs, booties and skinny jeans. That’s OK. To each their own.

    • Ducky la Rue says:

+1 to this. I have a high forehead, and if I didn’t have bangs (yes, in the same style as Hailee’s), everyone would be commenting on how I looked like some egghead space alien. Like any other hairstyle, it’s not inherently good or bad – it really just depends on whether or not it suits your face.

  7. magpie says:

I don’t mind the pants, but you really need a very thin waistline to pull of the look. It makes her took kinda chunky in the middle. Hair isn’t helping either.

  8. DreamyK says:

I just saw her trailer for Romeo and Juliet. It looks amazing. For reals.

  9. Ashley says:

Im in LOVE with her pants!

  10. taxi says:

Too much hair around her face. With huge bangs, pull back the sides.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Should bangs start in the middle of your head like that? She’s very pretty, but not loving the haircut.

  11. Lila says:

I want her pants so much. Those just might be my dream pants.

As for the bangs- I have a bigger problem with the bangs plus the curls. She looks like her mom curled her hair for preschool picture day. When the bangs grow out a bit and with her normal casual hair I think the bangs will look really cute. Even if they look awful- she’s 16. Isn’t messing up your hair in ways that you will regret later part of being 16?

  12. Leah says:

I dont want to comment on her style she is only 16 so i think she should have her bad or good hair in peace. But she was very good in True Grit, be interesting to see how she develops as an actress.

  13. Rachel says:

I think she looks absolutely beautiful. So fresh and happy. I think she just needs some better styling with the bangs. Less 80s curl under.

  14. Hakura says:

I know I’m in the minority, but I can’t stand her pants! I hate what they do to her body shape, & think the shoes look especially ridiculous with them. >.<

  15. Sabrine says:

I love those pants. I could care less about the bangs. She’s 17 and this is what someone her age does, bangs, no bangs, whatever. She looks cute. It’s just hair and it will grow.

  16. Jennifer12 says:

Beautiful girl, terrible bangs, worse outfit.

  17. Debbie says:

I am suddenly very curious about the size of Ben Kingsley’s feet and hands and what that might mean.

    • Debbie says:

Also, “yes” on the Harrison Ford question. Circa “The Empire Strikes Back”, my one and only goal was to MARRY HIM (and I guess I coulda, since I’m Calista’s age), but there was a long stretch there — starting with the earring — where I was very meh on him. This is the best he’s looked in quite a while. Whoever his doctor is, more celebs should go to her or him.

Ender’s Game isn’t YA sci-fi, it’s a sci-fi classic. Please don’t lump Ender’s Game with the other derivative nonsense that’s been coming out recently.

ETA: The trailer does make the movie look stupid though. Urgh.
