Cate Blanchett in pale pink Armani Prive at the NYFF: gorgeous or unflattering?

Here are some photos of the always lovely and pale Cate Blanchett at last night’s NY Film Festival. She flew into NYC from London especially for this – a gala tribute in her honor, a tribute for her decades and a half of extraordinary work. It doesn’t hurt that many people feel she’s the “one to beat” for this year’s Best Actress Oscar race. Cate wore this pale pink Armani Prive dress and Roger Vivier heels. I could do without the nude heels, quite honestly. Duchess Kate has ruined nude heels for me, although Kate isn’t the only one who over-works the nude heel (Angelina Jolie is another one). As for pale girls wearing pale colors… imagine how stunning this dress would have been in red or even gold. Yes, this washes her out but then again, she’s Cate Blanchett and she can do whatever she wants.

Alec Baldwin toasted his Blue Jasmine costar at the gala tribute and Woody Allen sent in a video praising her talents. I know many of you loathe Woody but when it comes to Cate’s Oscar race, I find it fascinating that Woody seems to be going above and beyond to support Cate’s chances. Usually, Woody wouldn’t be bothered to support his actors, but he’s putting some effort into Cate’s Oscar race. She also did a Q&A which went something like this:

Reflecting on her work at the Q&A, Blanchett was generally self-deprecating and funny in response to questions from soft-spoken Jones. They discussed, among other things, theater versus film acting (“I never expected to make a movie,” she said); her big-screen debut, at the age of 18, as an extra in an Egyptian film for which she was offered a small amount of money and falafel (“The falafel never came, so I left”); the pressure of playing Hollywood legend Hepburn (“Well, she died and she couldn’t play that role, and I was the schmuck who got that job”); and the biggest hits of which she was a part (“I didn’t know how to be an elf before I arrived in New Zealand” for The Lord of the Rings trilogy) — even if her son recently asked her, “Mom, when are you gonna make a blockbuster?”

The cineastes in the audience were particularly interested to hear about Blanchett’s experience working with mysterious Terrence Malick on the recently-wrapped Knight of Cups. “It was a cross between cinema, philosophy, poetry and a quasi religious experience,” she said. “It was certainly an extraordinary experience.” She continued, “He kept saying he wanted ‘to catch life on the wing,'” adding, “You weren’t so much playing characters as you were states of being.”

When audience members were eventually invited to ask questions of Blanchett, one asked her to name her favorite acting experience. She was initially reluctant, but said, “gun to my head,” that Gross und Klein, a German play in which she appeared in 2012, was her favorite in the theater, and that Blue Jasmine was her favorite on a film. Of the latter she said, “It felt like it was a culmination of my work in theater and my work in film, so it was satisfying on a number of different levels.”

[From THR]

“Mom, when are you gonna make a blockbuster?” That’s so funny. She does do these artsy little projects that usually don’t make money, but she’s been in some big movies too! She did LOTR and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Her cinematic taste isn’t JUST little art films, is what I’m saying.

Very pretty! It’s figure flattering and feminine. Love it.

  2. Elisabeth says:

Cate can do what she wants
    she looks beautiful

  3. Eve says:

Her dress is the exact same colour of her skin.

No, I don’t think it’s ugly or unflattering. But I’m slightly freaked out by that.

    • Kiddo says:

Yeah, a deeper color would have worked better and she wouldn’t have had to compensate with the candied apple make-up, in order for her face not to get lost in it.

      • gogoGorilla says:

Yeah, agreed that it’s not quite right. I would rather see lighter makeup than a darker dress, though. I think this could have worked if her makeup wasn’t so bright. Her face looks almost tan/orange, the blush is way too dark and so is the lipstick.

I’m not usually one for a totally monochromatic thing, but it could have been really cool if she had kept the makeup very minimal and in the same color palette. Hair up, maybe.

PS: She is gorgeous and her body is banging in that dress.

      • Stef Leppard says:

I love everything but the overdone blush. Otherwise she is glowing!

    • Hautie says:

I thought the same thing. She looks translucent in that color.

But then again, I rather see the paleness, than her spray paint her self orange.

      • Sullivan says:

Yes! Her pale skin is luminous. I appreciate when an actor avoids the orange “tan”. Celebrities, on the other hand, just love the orange.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

Yeah I agree…I love Cate always and forever and I like this dress but it’s just a bit too light for her ivory skin tone. She looks a bit like a gorgeous ghost here.

  4. Kiddo says:

The dress is pretty, her face, with that make-up, reminds me of a shiny apple.

    • Katren says:

Her makeup looks horrible! and it looks like she forgot to do her hair

Hate the dress too it looks like a nighty and she cannot pull off this colour.

  5. Doodles says:

    What happened to her nose?

  6. SamiHami says:

The color of the shoes doesn’t bother me, but those pointy, pointy toes do! That never looks good on anyone, ever. And the color of her lipstick doesn’t quite work.

As much as I like Cate, I really hope she doesn’t win an Oscar for Blue Jasmine. I would hate to see any Woody Allen flick win any type of awards. I just want that pervo to go away and live on a remote island with Polanski somewhere. Someplace where there are no little girls available for them to victimize.

  7. DanaG says:

It just doesn’t do it for me it is just too pale. I have seen Kate look so much better.

  8. Kaye says:

    Two words: washed out.

  9. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Beautiful dress and of course, she’s gorgeous, but I agree the color isn’t great on her.

I love her but I wish she wouldn’t work with Woody Allen. I wish nobody would work with Woody Allen.

    • TG says:

I feel conflicted because Midnight in Paris is one of my favorite movies and I made the decision to watch Woody Sllen films based in the thought that his wife was never legally his daughter and maybe he never bonded with her in that way but yesterday’s column on Ronan sickenedr to the core about his alleged sexual abuse. I couldn’t even sleep because I was thinking about it. It is so sickening and disturbing. So now I think I have to about him on my short list of reprehensible celebs. He can stay there with Polanski, Tom Cruise and Halle Berry. The problem is where do you stop and what line do you draw? Because I bet there are a lot of other bad and evil celebs out there. It is almost impossible to know everything about everyone. I would have to isolate myself in the woods to truly say no to bad guys.

      • Nan St. George says:

May I ask why you have put Tom Cruise and Halle Berry in the same category as Woody Allen and Roman Polanski? There is no snark whatsoever in my question, I am just really confused with the grouping. Allen and Polanski together I get, but the other two not so much.

      • lucy2 says:

I feel the same way – never liked him, didn’t know much beyond the Soon-Yi stuff, but LOVED Midnight in Paris, and I just saw Blue Jasmine because I love Cate so much.
But after reading that article, I don’t ever want to put another penny in his pocket.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I draw the line at rapist and child molesters.

      • chloe says:

Lucy2 I feel the same way about Woody, I knew about the Soon Le thing which still make me shudder, but after reading that story about Woody molesting his step daughter, I will not give him anymore of my money. I really love Cate, but can’t support her current movie vehicle.

    • mayamae says:

I love Cate, but it surprises me that she is never held accountable for working for Woody Allen. A lot of other actors are eviscerated for it. Kind of like how Natalie Portman is torn apart for signing the Roman Polanski letter, while Harrison Ford reamins an American legend after signing.

  10. Patricia says:

I was going through colors in my head trying to imagine which would suit her best. You said gold and red, both would be great. How about silver or grey? It’s a great dress and like you said she pulls it off no matter what.
I went to see Blue Jasmine with my husband. I went on a day that I was grappling with some depression due to back health issues. I’ll tell you what, it cheered me up even though it is anything but a feel good movie. Cate was amazing, I never even thought about her as an actress, she so fully and perfectly embodied this very complex character. It was a tour de force of ability and a performance that stayed with me.

  11. taxi says:

The make-up is more intensely coloured than usual so it offsets the otherwise too-pale dress. Not her best colour, but it doesn’t wash out her face.

Not her best hairdo, imo. Unfortunately (for me since I don’t have pointy feet) pointy-toe shoes are the “in” style this year according to the mags.

  12. Dawn says:

I love it. She looks so good!

  13. Karen says:

She’s the only woman I know who can wear skin tone colors and not look washed out but look radiant. She’s so beautiful though, doesn’t really matter what she wears.

  14. smee says:

She doesn’t look washed out at all – the dress perfectly matches her skin tone. She looks luminous.

  15. Kate says:

She also did Indiana Jones, Robin Hood, Hanna, The Aviator… Most of her other films have been sort of mid-level, budget and expectation wise, but the majority haven’t been too successful so I think people assume they were all practically indies.

I love her, but her filmography isn’t great. She’s put in some amazing performances, and done a handful of great movies, but more often than not she’s carrying a mediocre film. It seems like she might be getting better at picking films though, this year and next look better for her than ever before. But in the past she’s been lucky she has a thriving career in the theatre, it buys her a lot of cred.

  16. Aud says:

The only problem is the makeup.

  17. Tish says:

    Too much blush

  18. Quinn says:

Actually love the color of the dress…don’t think the hair does her any favors, however.

  19. toto says:

Dose any one find a similarity between her and Gisele Bundchen?
I think they look a like but cate is more refined and pale.

  20. davidbowie says:

Behold The Queen…and, yes, she can do and wear whatever she wants!

  21. hadleyb says:

I love the outfit, and I love nude heels.

She looks gorgeous but what happened to her face? She looks different, it’s not bad. She looks younger, but looks like work? I thought for sure Cate wouldn’t do anything drastic.

  22. CaribbeanLaura says:

I think the dress itself is gorgeous, but I really wish it were in a different colour on her. I have only seen snippets of woody allen movies and sure as heck won’t actively watch one now.

    • T.Fanty says:

I can’t bring myself to watch a Woody Allen movie anymore. I don’t care how good they are – the man repulses me.

      • phillykatt says:

I agree, Woody is a Creep from Hell. And I’m still trying to figure out he can movies in NYC with no people of color in them at ALL, no even walking down the street.

I think Cate’s dress would be more flattering in a slightly darker shade of pink, but she still looks nice.

      • Miss M says:

@Phillykat: it actually looked nice when they light was on her. I initially thought was pink, but when they light changed it would give the impression it was pastel tone. I think it looked better in person than in photos.

  23. Samtha says:

The color probably looked better on her in person. The dress itself is lovely though.

  24. Miss M says:

“Yes, this washes her out but then again, she’s Cate Blanchett and she can do whatever she wants.”

All I can say is, as being in the audience, that she was flawlessly beautiful in person and the color of the dress didn’t wash her out. She was asked if her kids watch her movies with her and she said No, I don’t do blockbusters! hahaha

After the Q’s and A’s, they screened Blue Jasmine.

  25. xxzeon says:

    PERFECTLY GORGEOUS!!!! Just like Cate!!!!

  26. Celebitchin' says:

I love Cate but those cheeks are too red or the positioning of the blush is odd.
    Basically, her cheeks look odd.

I don’t hate the dress, but don’t love it either.
It’s boring and pale like her skin.

  27. Tig says:

Glad the dress looked better in person, as in photos she looks so washed out. However, it is such a nice change to see a dress fitted to the wearer.

One thought- any coincidence bet the VF article and Woody’s video endorsement? You wonder if fallout from that article will effect Cate’s Oscar chances?

  28. Grant says:

I think she would look fecking fabulous in a deep blood red.

  29. Maggie says:

She has odd features but put them all together and she becomes a very striking woman. I love the look and she can pull it off.

  30. TheCountess says:

I love me some Cate, but I’m mystified at the praise for “Blue Jasmine.” The characterization is so over-the-top, I was expecting her to have a major schizophrenic break by the end. That men were constantly falling over themselves to woo her, given her conspicuous unstable behavior, was laugh-inducing.

The supporting characters were weak and poorly thought through – the stereotypical blue-collar sister & boyfriend, the bizarre Peter Sarsgaard storyline (an aspiring politician who plans on using a diplomatic assignment in Vienna to launch a congressional career, who never bothers to Google his girlfriend’s name or wonder why she doesn’t have a website portfolio of her interior design work?)…

Here’s hoping “Philomena” lives up to early buzz and Judi Dench becomes the front-runner for Best Actress.

  31. Lulu says:

Lady Galadriel can do no wrong.

  32. Sisi says:

Gorgeous as always, she can do no wrong in my eyes. And her performance in Blue Jasmine was utterly fascinating to watch, hopes she wins the Oscar.

  33. Katie says:

    GODDESS.

  34. MrsBPitt says:

I love CB, but she does not look good here. She is too pale to wear that color, and her make-up is to severe and makes her look clownish. Cate is usually flawless, but this is a mis-step in my opinion.

  35. GByeGirl says:

I’m mostly straight, but she makes me tingly in my tingly parts.

  36. A Fan says:

Eeks, too pale for her…and her fake hair colour is very unflattering.
