Prince Harry & Cressida ready to marry, ‘the wedding likely to take place next year’

Prince Harry is on a Commonwealth tour of Australia and New Zealand right now, and these are some photos of Harry in Australia on Sunday. He landed in Australia a few days ago and apparently the tour is going really well so far. Out of all the commonwealth countries, I tend to think Australia is the one most likely to sever ties with the monarchy, although the Canadians occasionally make some anti-monarchist noise too. My point is that it might have been possible that Harry would have been met with large-scare anti-monarchy protests… but so far, so good. Because everybody loves The Party Prince, the Ginger Heartthrob. But will they still love him if and when he marries Cressida Bonas?!

He is the Royal family’s greatest asset: a hugely likeable young man who charms his way around the world, winning hearts wherever he goes. This weekend, Prince Harry was in Sydney, his first visit to Australia, where he received a rapturous reception with hordes of flag-waving, cheering people lining the city’s harbour, straining to catch a glimpse of the world’s most eligible bachelor.

It would seem that his charm has also borne fruit closer to home. Cressida Bonas, his girlfriend, has finally overcome her fears about marrying into the Royal family and friends of the couple say that a wedding is very much on the cards.

“Cressie is going to marry Harry,” one of her friends told The Telegraph. “Harry never stops talking about marriage and children, and she has now got used to the idea. The wedding is likely to take place next year.”

That the Prince, who turns 30 next year, wanted to settle down with Miss Bonas, 24, was no secret. Her free-spirited ways were said to have captured the heart of the man labelled “the party prince” and he was smitten as soon as he was introduced by his cousin, Princess Eugenie, in May 2012. But she felt too young to marry.

“Cressida has been in floods of tears,” one of her friends claimed. “Harry is coming on very strong, but she is all over the place. She thinks she is far too young to get married and is scared by all his talk of marriage and settling down.”

But the Prince persisted. When he was sent to serve in Afghanistan in November, the pair were in regular telephone contact throughout his four-month posting. Upon his return, the romance blossomed, with nights at the cinema and time spent among friends. Last week they went to see a James Blunt concert; the following night it was the West End musical The Book of Mormon. The pair have the same sparkling sense of fun and relish a good party — Miss Bonas studied dance at Leeds University and graduated from the Trinity Laban Conservatoire earlier this year.
Her family, which has direct links to Edward VII, is bohemian and entertaining — something the Prince is said to like about them.

Her mother is Lady Mary-Gaye Curzon, 66, the Sixties “It girl” and daughter of the 6th Earl Howe. Her father is Lady Mary-Gaye’s third husband, the businessman Jeffrey Bonas. One of her half-sisters, Pandora, is an accessories designer for Vivienne Westwood; her half-brother Jacobi Anstruther-Gough-Calthorpe is a polo-playing man about town. Her half-sister Isabella, to whom she is very close, recently married Sir Richard Branson’s son Sam. Before going to Leeds, Miss Bonas spent a gap year working in a bar and restaurant in Australia.

The Prince’s 24-hour stay in Australia allowed him no time to visit his girlfriend’s former haunt. Tony Abbott, the British-born Australian prime minister and once head of Australia’s monarchist movement, welcomed the Prince.

“I regret to say that not every Australian is a monarchist,” he said. “But today everyone feels like a monarchist.”

A visit to Sydney harbour to inspect a warship parade caused a frenzy — with roars of applause wherever he was sighted. “Go, The Ranga,” cried some, using the slang term for redheads. Others shouted “We love you Harry” and “Harry, Harry, Harry!”

But while Australia was smitten with Harry, his heart was in England. From Sydney he travels to Perth, and then Dubai. But there is little doubt that he is counting the hours until he can be reunited with Miss Bonas.

[From The Telegraph]

What do you think? I think it’s very interesting that the stories seem pretty consistent – Harry’s the one who wants to settle down, Cressida is younger and less willing. They’ve been saying that for a while. While it’s fun to think about Harry trying to “convince” a girl to marry him, maybe that’s just who he is. I think he tried to convince Chelsy Davy to marry him too but she always refused. Cressida doesn’t sound as hard-nosed about the whole “catching a prince” thing which is something we could accuse Duchess Kate of – once Kate had her chance with William, she didn’t relinquish him and she worked her angle for nine years. I guess it feels like we don’t even know Cressida that much. She’s rich and well-connected and her family is very well-connected. She doesn’t NEED to marry Harry and maybe that’s what makes her so attractive to him. So, a Christmas engagement?

Yay! I’m happy for them, if true!

    • Liv says:

Really? She seems so boring. A nice girl, but super boring.

(Loved him with Chelsy by the way 😉 )

  2. DanaG says:

I won’t hold my breath I think the press are pushing this because they want another wedding. Harry and cressy have already broken up a couple of times at least not a good sign for things to come. She is way too young and it’s one thing to be rich and connected and being Royal. I don’t think she has what it takes I said the same about Sarah Ferguson and what a disaster she was. Besides I think Beatrice will marry her guy they have been together for over 6 years.

    • Lindy says:

I got the same feeling when I saw the headline to this article! My first reaction was: If they marry, they will divorce. A Bohemian girl from a Bohemian family is not going to mesh well with all the stuffy obligations of royalty.

Better Beatrice and her partner if the world needs another Royal Wedding.

      • Meredith says:

Her mother has apparently been married (and divorced) four times. I’m not divorce-shaming – just pointing out that in her family, divorce is a very acceptable way out of an unpleasant situation. Your parents’ marriage is often a blueprint for your own – not a good sign. If they marry, I bet they divorce within 10 years.

      • Gretchen says:

I just don’t get this characterisation of her or her family being “bohemian”, I mean, come on! She studied dance at Leeds, she didn’t run off with a circus.

They aren’t artistic wanderers living hand-to-mouth, they’re extremely wealthy people who holiday several times a year, which is THE standard amongst British aristocrats and not at all at odds with the royal family.

Besides, I’m pretty sure that a professional polo playing brother with the name Jacobi Anstruther-Gough-Calthorpe precludes any familial bohemian credibility.

      • Thinker says:

She studied modern dance… Which, if you’ve ever attended a modern dance performance it is VERY bohemian.

      • Lucinda says:

@Meredith, the flip could also be true. My dad is on his 4th marriage, my mother-in-law her third. That made my husband and I much more careful about marriage. We have been together 20 years now and going strong because we know exactly what divorce costs. You just never know.

I think the royalty thing would be a bigger issue than the divorce think. jmo

  3. Anna says:

If this is true, I will miss the Ginger Prince’s wild ways. On the other hand, I wonder if he’s be openly affectionate with his bride, or at least more touchy-feely than Will&Kate. That’s be tres cute to watch.

    • HH says:

That would quite interesting seeing as how he’s not openly affectionate with her now. It’s so different than his relationship with Chelsy. They were always affectionate with each another, but it didn’t come off as PDA, it was just chemistry. I haven’t seen that with Harry and Cressida, but it’s very possible Harry has either changed or she’s not into that in public.

SIDE NOTE: It bothers me to no end that because of the “blue blood” running through this girl’s veins she’s considered suitable despite her family. Her mother has married at least 3 times and she has 6 (?? – too many to keep up with) half brothers and sisters from the marriages of her mom and dad. While no one should be judged by their parents’ mistakes, we all know if her family situation happened to anyone poor or middle class marriage would absolutely be off the table; or, at the very least she would be continually ridiculed. Yes there are people that have talked about this situation, but it’s not the major issue it would be if she were a commoner.

  4. AH says:

As a people we’re (australians) kinda laid back in terms of protesting and stuff, so even if we were as anti monarchist as they’re implying we are (which isn’t my experience at all) there wouldn’t have been much of a worry about protests! Haha

    • Anna says:

Have a pint instead, right? Preferably WITH the Prince 🙂

    • Lozface says:

Totally agree!! I didn’t even consider there would be anti-monarchy protests. Australians were out to celebrate 100 years of the Royal Australian Navy. Prince Harry was a ‘bonas’! We’re laid back and bloody proud!

      • Go Crazy says:

I’m both Canadian and Australian, and currently living in Aus. My observation is that Aussies are WAY more monarchist than Canadians.

Australia shares so many more sporting events with the UK such as rugby, tennis, major horse racing, cricket, the Ashes (my God, the Ashes!) let alone this obsession with everything from the motherland (including celebrities I’ve never heard of before) – right through to having the union jack on the flag (that says it all, doesn’t it?)

I would suggest that Canadians don’t really talk about leaving the Commonwealth because they barely notice they’re part of it… (honestly, the royal birth was a mention, but certainly not celebrated as it was here. Quebec separatism seems to be a more relevant topic… but don’t get me started…:)

  5. Zimmer says:

All I can think of is Marsha Brady.

    • m says:

I always thought she was Sara Paxtons twin, but now I cant unsee Marcia…

    • EscapedConvent says:

She does look like Marcia Brady! I also saw a little Alicia Silverstone.

Their names are such fun, aren’t they? Cressida, Pandora, Jacobi….;-)

    • boredsuburbanhousewife says:

Right on, it’s Marcia. I wonder if this goes forward if DoC will, like Jan Brady, be sick of “Cressida! Cressida! Cressida!”

The names are great — so very UC.

The one that interests me is the Mom! She must be somethin’ else to land all those husbands. Love to read her memoirs….bet they’d read like Annabel Goldsmith’s.

      • LAK says:

I would lurve to read a biography of the mom.

Currently, I am reading a biography of the Mitford girls.

      • Bored suburbanhousewife says:

@LAK the Mitford bio I read was fascinating. Odd that the youngest, Debo, arguably came out the best of them. Wild family.

    • mayamae says:

The Tatler cover is the first picture I’ve seen of her where her mouth is not open mid donkey bray.

  6. Sixer says:

These posh girls aren’t silly. They want a posh boy who *isn’t* royal and in the public eye. I can’t say that I blame them. I wouldn’t marry one.

    • EscapedConvent says:

She shouldn’t be “afraid to marry” Harry—she should be afraid to marry into that family!

  7. MisJes says:

Actually, while their may be some anti-monarchists here, for the most part (in my experience) we are quite royalist. We have much love for the Queen here, and are proud of being a Commonwealth country.

So I don’t know what drew conclusions that we would have protests of epic proportions? I don’t think they have any understanding of our relationship with Britain.

And I agree with AH above, we are a completely laid-back, easy-going people. Protesting is not our style at all. We’d rather be relaxing at the beach or a BBQ.

  8. lambchops says:

My God this set are sooo incestuous.

  9. Lilyvanilli says:

While the Aussie men I know we’re interested in the big boy toy boats the women were all about Harry. I wish the anti monarchy sentiments were true but I suspect our prime minister was hanging to introduce Harry to his daughters .

  10. Tish says:

LOL @ that Tatler “Harry <3 Cressy" cover!

  11. Jane says:

Have you ever met an Australian? Nobody here has any strong opinions about the royal family whatsoever. And if anyone here actually cared that much about the monarchy, nobody could ever be bothered protesting.

    • mslewis says:

HA! I don’t recall ever hearing about a mass protest anywhere in Australia. It’s just not in the DNA down there. I really love Aussies, even though I have a tough time understanding the accent!!

    • littlestar says:

Yep, same here in Canada. No one cares really about the monarchy and no one talks about them. The only person I know who cares about the Royals is my 86 year old Baba. And I guess me, but I’m only in it for the gossip!

  12. Stef Leppard says:

Her brother is a “man about town”!! Love it! God, I wish I could slip into that lifestyle for a day or two.

  13. Virgilia Coriolanus says:

Ah, my cheeky ginger lover—I see you as being like my youngest uncle on my dad’s side–forever dating (although my uncle actually is dating an “older” woman-mid thirties, a few years older than he is-with kids, who is far less likely to put up with his bs), and is the “fun” uncle.

  14. TG says:

I don’t understand why she would even be dating him if she didn’t think she would want to marry a prince. He needs to find a better woman. Someone not of that set. Someone who is unique and not living off of connections. Someone like me. Ha ha.

  15. Macey says:

I may be the only one but I kind of hoped he would be able to work things out with Chelsey. I really think she is the one he wants but I know she doesnt want the royal life.

  16. Cool Phosphorescent Shimmer says:

Cressida and Pandora? Well done there, Mrs. Bonas.

I think it would be awesome if they got engaged after knowing each other only about a year. It would certainly put a bee in ol’ Waity’s bonnet. Cress will have “won” because her prince could not WAIT to marry her, while Wills had to be dragged kicking and screaming down that aisle. (Note: i am exaggerating for effect. I have no idea how Wills felt).

  17. Talie says:

He never went to college, so he didn’t really broaden his social circle the way William did — not that Kate is some pauper, but she didn’t grow up hanging around palaces until she went to St. Andrews and climbed up the social ladder.

It’s weird he is often seen as being more down to earth than William, but he pretty much sticks with the same rich kids he always has.

  18. allons-y alonso says:

pffftttt…..we are far too laid back to care. I’ve never personally come across an anti-monarchist sentiment. Admitedly, we’re still a young nation with very strong ties to the Commonwealth. I don’t think Australia will separate itself happen anytime soon. It hasn’t been brought up since the resounding ‘no’ we had in the 1999 referendum

  19. Laurabb says:

    Chelsy forever!

  20. Word says:

    Lol..yeah right

  21. Maria says:

If anything, I would love that it would tie a knot in DoC’s panties, considering who the girl is related to: DoC EX.HA! Now that would be hilarious.

  22. BeckyR says:

    Chelsey, where are you?????

  23. The Original Mia says:

I seriously doubt there will be a wedding. They’re dating, but it doesn’t seem really serious. If she starts showing up to more events, being the official girlfriend, then I’ll give some weight to the rumors. Otherwise, carry on, my sweet Ginger Prince. You’re showing up your lazy bro & his wife.

  24. sachet says:

Is her real name Cressida Toyota, or Toyota Cressida.

  25. mslewis says:

I have no idea what’s going on with any of the royals, unlike some commenters on here who sound like they know everything. However, I seriously doubt Harry will marry this girl at all and particularly not as soon as next year. She is only 24 and has just graduated from school and it appears she wants to be an actress and dancer. If she’s smart she will follow her own ambitions and do what she wants because if she were to marry into this family, all her dreams will fall away. She’s 24 and that is far too young to marry into this family. Besides, what’s the rush? Harry’s still playing soldier. He doesn’t need to be tied down now either.

    • Leah says:

oh top of that… Harry keeps talking about marriage and kids?? Really? He seemed pretty happy to be able to hang out with little George, and equally happy that George goes home with Will and Kate, while Harry can continue his life. Maybe he is in love with Cressida- it seems that the story is pretty consistent throughout the press, but who knows! But I doubt either is chomping at the bit for marriage and kids!

      • Tish says:

Yeah. I want to see the actual dating first. The tabloids are still on a royal wedding high, obviously.

    • Suze says:

See, I want them to get married. One of Cressy’s eighty gazillion half siblings designs for Vivienne Westwood. And I so want to see Cressida do a modern dance interpretation down the aisle at Westminster wearing a crazy Aunt Vivi design!

Would just simply make my day. Please, all powers in the sky, make this happen!

  26. Mitch Buchanan Rocks! says:

Her name sounds so pronstar – like caressing the boner – cresting the boner.

  27. Lucky Charm says:

The fact that she feels she’s too young to marry, and if he has to pressure and persuade her to marry him, they clearly are not on the same page and that doesn’t bode well. If they do get married, it won’t be as soon as next year, but I don’t see it happening at all.

    • brin says:

      I agree!

    • Decloo says:

Agree. She’s too young. She’s not that much older than Diana was when she married Charles. I think Will and Kate have a great chance together because they waited so long. Each got to experience life and that is crucial to do before tying the knot. Cressy and Harry both need to sow some more wild oats.

  28. Sleepy says:

If there is any truth at all to the phrase “getting used to the idea of marriage and children” then that is a bad sign. You don’t “get used” to the idea of marriage with a person, you either love the person you are with and want to marry and have children or don’t. I don’t think those quotes make Cressida sound good at all. She has gotten criticism for being vacuous and immature and that is what comes to my mind with things like that being written. I think these two could easily outgrow each other in 1-2 years honestly. Rushing into a marriage would be a mistake. All that being said, I don’t see Harry getting married for at least 2-3 years to anyone. I think the press is pushing this hard because she is a pretty blonde girl from the “right” background and she is about the only one like that they have been able to fawn over. Not convinced it will ever happen with these two but who knows, Harry is the fun unpredictable one…

    • LadySlippers says:

      @Sleepy

I thought the same thing when I read “getting used to”. Even for a non-Royal marriage that’s a recipe for disaster.

Harry needs to find someone who *shares* his goals — not someone who needs persuading.

I hope he can find that person.

    • HH says:

+1 Every report I’ve seen so far has used that particular phrase. Happily ever after may just be for fairy tales, but doesn’t even sound just plain happy.

  29. Maggie says:

I cant see him marrying her or anyone anytime soon!

  30. Liberty says:

Come on, Harry. Skip the RF “if I can’t marry who I want, I’ll marry you” syndrome and go get your Chelsy. Now, THAT would be Bohemian.

    • Green Girl says:

While that would be cool, I don’t think Chelsy wants any part of this lifestyle. She would have to give up a lot to marry him.

      • Liberty says:

Agreed! the Bohemian part would be walking away from the royal nonsense to have a happy life w her — he can, he’s the spare.

  31. Thinker says:

Cressida is very pretty. But she’s 24!!!

I highly doubt she or Harry are going to rush things… Harry’s got to make sure she has staying potential, and she’s got to grow up a bit and feel ready to settle down. 24 is awfully young to get married in this day and age. Even Harry at 29, is young to settle down with a girl he’s only been with for a year. Among the friends of Will and Harry they all seem to settle down and marry between the ages of 30 and 35… I bet Harry is thinking of marriage, but I hardly expect it will be soon.

On another note – Harry is so charming. His charisma just oozes out of every inch of his being! It’s undeniable even in still photography!

  32. Reece says:

Ummm, am I the only who still isn’t totally convinced they’re together? Friends=obvs, fwb=maybe, possibly (actually more what I’m leaning to. I mean can the guy not have a fwb? Somebody to kill some time with?), but serious enough for marriage=Nope! They have no chemistry.
It just could be that he’s changed esp after coming back from Afghanistan but idk, still not on the Cressida train.

  33. Andrea says:

I know someone whose mother has been married 4 times and now that friend has been married twice and is talking about a 3rd. Like mother, like daughter. She will be hard to keep long term. Move along to someone more suitable Harry.

  34. molly says:

Well Waity Katy will have the hump if she does marry Harry – they can’t stand each other. More like Waity Katy is dead jealous that Harry has chosen someone a bit more glamourous than her. No doubt Waity Katy will find out in years to come that she threw herself at the wrong prince, a chip off his booooooooooooring father’s block !!!!

  35. Suze says:

We’ll see what happens with this one. I think it could easily go either way. Cressida and Harry could be tripping down the aisle next June or she could fade into obscurity by early next year.

I will say that they are really not that young – 24 and 29 are pretty standard ages to get married. And chronological age does not always equal maturity.

Granted she hasn’t had time to go off and try her acting/dancing career – but there are always trade offs in life. And the royal family isn’t an easy one to marry into, royal life has its difficulties, but that would be the case for a bride of 26 or 66.

  36. SE says:

Haven’t seen her before – lovely pic. But her reported anxieties plus her age make me worry this isn’t a good idea, at least not now. (Love her half-brother’s name – so British!)

  37. Shoe_Lover says:

Seriously, where is your “Australians are the most likely to leave the Commonwealth” info coming from.

I can count on one hand the number of people I have met who want to form a republic. Most people either love the Monarchy or aren’t bothered either way. And no one cares enough to form anti-monarchy protests.

  38. someone says:

I’m not sure I buy the “too young to marry” line she is selling. She’s either wild about him enough to want to marry him or she’s not. Usually the “too young to marry” argument is thrown around when young adults who want to get married think about the financial or physical logistics it would take to get married (like not having good jobs or no place to live or too much debt or finishing school first). Clearly for them that side of things won’t be an issue (with both their families money). If she actually is worried about her maturity and if she’s ready for marriage she’s more introspective than she appears.

  39. Savanna says:

God Cressida Bonas is just the worst name to ever exist.

  40. pato says:

I don´t buy it. he won´t marry any time soon.

  41. raincoaster says:

Forget the ginger: who’s the disgruntled bodyguard? Anyone got his number?
