Katie Holmes’ skinny jeans, boots & Derek Lam purse: great look or very unflattering?

FFN_Holmes_Katie_INI_101313_51232569

I think I’ve told this story before, but it’s worth retelling in this context. When I was about 13 years old, I found a pair of jeans that I loved. The jeans were incredibly tight. Too tight. Unflatteringly tight. Still, I wore them. I wore them until my mom said, “You need to stop wearing those jeans because no one needs to see the outline of your vagina.” These Katie Holmes photos made me think of that.

Katie was walking around NYC yesterday, wearing nearly the same outfit she was seen in on Friday. Skinny jeans, a sweater/poncho-like thing and booties. The purse is Derek Lam, by the way. I think we’ve all established that we want Katie to do great things post-Cruise. We want her to look great and do great work. Does this outfit establish that? Or does it make you kind of sad for her?

For me, it’s all about the unflattering skinny jeans. So few women can really pull them off, and I have to say… Katie Holmes is not one of them. She looks poured into them and like if she turns her body the wrong way, she’s going to cut off circulation to her lower half. But I do kind of like the t-neck, lord help me. It’s kind of cute. I like the idea of this better than the execution.

Maybe it’s the angle? The top photo is horrendous, but the other photos are less so. Still not a good look.

    • Nicole says:

It’s such a weird angle. The foreshortening makes her look like she has a child’s arm. The jeans are bad in both pictures… they’re bad, bad jeans.

  2. Andrea1 says:

A no no for Me. And she looks older than her age. Just look at the way her butt is pressed. Very unflattering look.

  3. Ag says:

I like the sweater. That’s all I have.

  4. Patricia says:

Yeah this outfit is not flattering. But I do like that Katie has full thighs and doesn’t try to hide them. She is not built with skinny legs, she always owns her unique shape so well on the red carpet. And no matter what she wears there’s no hiding the fact that she’s beautiful.

  5. Jen says:

She looks great in those jeans. You don’t have to be a stick to wear skinny pants.

    • V4Real says:

Note to Kim K, this is how you do skinny jeans.

Katie looks fine. For all those who say she doesn’t, lets not forget she’s in motion and those angles are how the camera caught her. She looks like a typical New Yorker and has nice curves and long legs.

    • Jacqueline says:

I have to concede that they aren’t the most flattering. BUT, she’s also probably WAY skinnier (in person as opposed to photos) than most of us and they STILL aren’t doing her any favors. She’s almost there, lots of the rest of us aren’t! Scary.

  6. Kiddo says:

Oh Kaiser, you and I are united in our quest for the death of the skinny jean trend. Those photos are evidence of its crimes, amongst others.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Agree. It’s like the exposed midriff. You see it everywhere, but about 1 in 10,000 people actually look really good in it. You have to be tall and very, very lean to look good in skinny jeans. They’re just not flattering otherwise, even if you have a great figure. My opinion, anyway.

  7. YummyMummy says:

The jeans would be better 2 sizes larger.

    • V4Real says:

But they’re skinny jeans thy are supposed to fit snug; 2 sizes larger would just be jeans.

      • running says:

“skinny” only refer to the width of the ankle opening. These are just really tight jeans with a skinny leg opening. She could possibly be veering into the dreaded jegging territory. I don’t mind the way she looks but I think she should consider a darker wash.

    • Lisa says:

I think one size larger would do it. I am thinking that would achieve the body skimming look (which these jeans don’t do: they are too tight)

  8. Reece says:

I think the sweater would work better without the bag across the front. Although I do understand the practicality of it.
I’ve said it before, I hate booties in general. They make everyone’s legs look short and stubby. If you’re legs are short and stubby or just thicker then it’s awful.

  9. Dawn says:

Her hair is wet. My hair looks exactly like it when I go out with wet hair. As for skinny jeans I hate them on almost everyone. I think they can make people who are tall and skinny look bad. I wish they would fade away again.

  10. Tania says:

I would expect this outfit from Britney, not her.

  11. newtoyourn says:

I’m not fond of this look. Her shorts the other day were more flattering. The sweater is cute from certain angles. Those jeans are not doing her any favors, her body is better than this outfit makes it appear.

  12. Paloma says:

I still think she has shrunk her calves somehow, and I don’t think it’s through weight reduction or diet.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

I wonder if she got smart lipo on them or something…

      • blue marie says:

so this is totally off topic but.. were you holding your breath yesterday OKitt? freakin Tom Brady man, that dude is ridiculous! Gah, that was some must see football..

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

I think my neighbors might have assumed I was having the best orgasm of my life with how loudly I screamed.
I love it when Tom gets mad.

Then the Sox had the most incredible game with Ortiz hitting a grand slam to tie it up and Saltalamacchia’s 9th inning single won the game for us. It was the most exciting Sunday for Boston sports fans. There’s an extra spring in the step of every Bostonian this morning 🙂

      • Bodhi says:

@ OKit– I married a Masshole & we were WHOOPING & HOLLERING last night for sure! Way to give us a heart attack, guys. SHEESH!

I just adore the Sox. They way they chased down Salty made me grin from ear to ear. They are like a little league team, so full of joy for the game & for their team mates 🙂 SOX 4EVA!

  13. Nicolette says:

It looks much better from the side view for some reason. As for the jeans, too tight. Reminds me of back in the day when ‘designer’ jeans were all everyone wore. The tighter the better. Girls my age, myself included (hides face in shame) would literally lay down to get the zipper up. Pair that with high heeled Candies shoes, feathered hair and a designer satchel purse. Good Lord! Thank goodness that with age, comes wisdom. 🙂

    • Annie2 says:

I remember those days- used a coat hanger to pull the zipper! I was so thin back then ( and hated it-) and was constantly putting my jeans back in the dryer to shrink them. Oh how I wish for my skinny days back!!

  14. Quinn says:

She is a pretty woman, but her legs are not her best feature…funny, since we always assume height= good legs. It makes me feel a little better, actually!:) And, it’s nice seeing an actress at a healthy weight for a change…good on you, Katie! You don’t look like you have a terminal illness like most of Hollyweird.

  15. Lauren says:

Are we sure they’re not jeggings?

  16. Applapoom says:

Main problem is she is ungroomed with uncombed hair. I kind of like that she does not give a shit. Haha.

  17. Moana says:

KH has always ignored that her body isn’t perfect. She wears clothes not suitable. She thinks she’s a fashion icon, but very few things ever look good on her because she doesn’t dress to her type.
Makes her look snotty and pretentious.
And her hair is rarely good. It’s the kind that takes some styling, not good just left natural.
    Girl is a fashion mess.

    • Didiz says:

Tom Cruise was trying to turn her into a fashion icon. She used to be dressed up in YSL, Balenciaga et al… The thing is, she didn’t and still doesn’t have “IT”, the charisma to wear such a high fashion with flair.

  18. Jay says:

I don’t mind the fit of the jeans, but I wish they were darker. Jeans in that shade/wash always make me think “grandpa pants”. They’d be gorgeous in a much darker wash. But then, I’m a skinny jeans fanatic – I only own maybe two pairs of jeans (out of more than a dozen) that aren’t skinny or super-skinny.

  19. smee says:

It’s the cut of that sweater that I’m not liking here…….and I would prob. like it with leggings and nothing strapped across it. She improving.

  20. tiki says:

i’m thinking katie couldn’t care less what any of us thinks. she escaped the tiny terror and lived to tell about it. you think she’s worried about the fashion police? 😀

    • Josephine says:

I agree, although it bugs me that she touts herself as a fashionista — she has spoken of her style savvy in several interviews. I also think there is no doubt that her ex bought her that fashion line, and I think she should stop pretending to be a designer.

  21. embra says:

i wish all her booties would call her dad and ask for assist in escaping. he would totally do it.

  22. Mandy says:

Gosh, I love skinny jeans, but I’m very tall with wide hips and thick legs. So if I do wear skinny jeans, I always have to pair them with a long shirt/sweater that covers my butt and wear boots.

  23. MsLib says:

I love Katie especially now that she has ditched the crazy boy. I want her to look great because that will show us all that she is feeling good too. But does anyone think her hair is really terrible looking: stringy, split ends, fuzzy, and flat… Use some product or better yet, there are hundreds of wonderful stylists in NY. Pick one and have something done. You are worth it girl!

  24. Shiba says:

The camera adds 10 lbs – maybe she looks great in person or when she looks in the mirror?

  25. Grant says:

I don’t think it’s terrible. She’s tall and long-legged, and I see no sign of camel toe. I think she pulls off the skinny jeans just fine.

    • Becky1 says:

I agree. I’m not a big fan of skinny jeans in general but I think she looks fine.

For whatever reason people are really critical of her attire and her legs. I don’t get it-I don’t think she ever looks that bad-I’ve seen far worse outfits on others. Yeah her legs aren’t her best feature but they aren’t “bad.” For whatever reason a lot of people think that if you don’t have long, thin legs that are shaped a certain way your legs are “bad” and you need to keep them covered. It’s ridiculous.

      • Josephine says:

Probably because she claims to be a designer?? That suggests some level of style and taste. It seems odd to be a designer yet totally unable to dress your own shape in something flattering.

  26. Amanda G says:

I can’t wait until skinny jeans and tights are over. Even skinny people don’t look good in them.

  27. Aud says:

So much money, yet no idea about dressing herself.

  28. A Fan says:

    Awful, as usual.

She dresses for the opposite body type than she actually has. Her outfits would look good on someone with Diane Kruger’s build.

Katie – buy a mirror with those millions Tommy gave you…I’m sure you can afford one.

  29. Nonya says:

I think perhaps she’s put on a few pounds since she purchased the jeans. Only possible scenario. Unless she just doesn’t know how to shop, or has a terrible stylist. Either way, the look is “I don’t care lazy.” And not in a good way.

  30. taxi says:

The sweater is the problem. It hits her hips at a very unflattering point, therefore emphasizing figure flaws she may have. Raglan sleeves + funnel neck make her shoulders look too narrow, doesn’t balance her hip width.

The cross-body straps further distort the too-short sweater & as Dana said above, the sleeve length is bad on her.

  31. janie says:

This gal is a D list actor at best… She would fade into oblivion if not for her kid w/ Cruise? What does she do besides walk around, get coffee or shop? I don’t care what she wears, she isn’t memorable.

  32. nico says:

At least she’s hiding those legs.

  33. Kittykat says:

She confuses me… she looks like she belongs in Indiana… at a mall.
I understand her need for casual but someone needs to help her. She could be such a cute girl.

  34. Bodhi says:

I think she would look much better in a different style of jean. Or maybe even skinnies in a darker color.

As for wanting big things for her… Yes, it would be nice if she rose like a phoenix from the ashes of Xenu. I think she has, somewhat. She has her daughter, a nice apartment, & she gets to wear heels whenever she wants! 😉

Career-wise, however… I don’t think she’ll ever have a great one. She is a passable actress, but she is too old for the ingenue roles & she just isn’t talented enough for meaty indie roles.

  35. UsedToBeLulu says:

I think she looks good in all but the top photo. At least she can let her tall flag fly now without the midget at her side.

  36. Tara says:

I love Katie and do think she’s talented, but not one thing she’s wearing is doing her any favors except preventing an arrest for naked walkingness.

  37. huh says:

She can’t dress well even if her life depends on it.

  38. snark says:

Darker color, at least one size bigger. These look like they have spandex in them and you don’t want those too small or they fit like a glove. Not the look for Katie’s legs- the jeans should skim the body not hug it.

  39. Kat Matz says:

Everyone is going to hate me for this, but there is something a little Jackie Onassis about Katie Holmes. . They (for JKO, were, RIP) beautiful women who moved to New York City to raise their children after divorce. They both go/went about their daily lives completely harassed by the paps.. I don’t think either enjoys (enjoyed) it much. I respect her..she got away from that Scientologist who just happens to be the BIGGEST MOVIE STAR in the world, and she’s trying to lead a normal life. If it weren’t for the daughter, she’d probably be left alone. But I think she’s a devoted Mom (like JKO), who still has to make a living. Let’s give her a break.

  40. Kat Matz says:

They also kind of have/had similar shapes in terms of legs, etc, Tho JKO had better inate style, of course.

  41. j78 says:

God, where are Stacey and Clinton when you need them??

  42. Melissa says:

Can’t handle that sweater, but otherwise not a bad look

  43. ella says:

Rihanna was wearing Holmes/Yang the other day, pants and jacket, very cool look!
Katie is somewhat underestimated in my opinion, people complain about her clothes, but she constantly looks better than most other actresses going about their daily routine. I like her in skinny jeans, she looks natural, in a nice way.

  44. Bananapants says:

As my grandfather would say, “if she farts, she’ll blow her boots off”.
