Natalie Portman in Dior for the UK ‘Thor’ premiere: cute or a baked potato disaster?

wenn20784393

I have to give Natalie Portman some credit here: if it wasn’t for her presence, the photos from the Thor 2: The Dark Loki UK premiere might have been a total sausage party. While I think it’s lame that Marvel is barely interested in hiring women, at least the few Marvel women (Natalie, Kat Dennings, Scarlett Johansson) show up and try to make it a gender-diverse red carpet.

Now, that being said, I really dislike what Natalie is wearing. WTF is this? It’s Dior, obviously. I don’t even know what’s going on with Dior these days. The past few collections have been especially unflattering and budget-looking. If you didn’t know this was Dior, what would your fashion ID be on this look? That sweater is simple enough – it could be J.Crew or Land’s End. The skirt is just awful though – it’s like a Project Runway Fail. Like, the challenge was “try to make a woman look like a baked potato” and this is what the amateur designer came up with. And don’t even get me started on that damn ponytail. WTF Natalie? Was this really your best style option?!

Also – Natalie spoke to E! News about getting to slap both Tom Hiddleston and Chris Hemsworth. Apparently, she’s so small that they had to let her stand on a crate so she could reach up high enough to slap Chris. Chris makes it sound like Natalie’s too tiny to ever hurt him, but Tommy makes it sound like Natalie actually did hurt him. Tommy is so delicate.

I’m also including photos of Kat Dennings who was also at the premiere and OMG, her dress sucked too. The bodice was much too tight and it made her breasts look monolithic. Plus, that skirt thing is an absolute tragedy. Update: Kat’s dress is vintage Lanvin. Terrible.

  1. Anna says:

The sweater part looks very budget, and the look would work much better with a belt. Natalie looks ok in it BECAUSE she is so short – the original design would be that awkward just above the ankle length on anyone else.

    • V4Real says:

She looks like Winona Ryder in the last pic. I think she’s a beautiful woman but this dress makes her look a little teenage.

      • bettyrose says:

I don’t know why but my first reaction to that dress was she was about to run through the hills singing that they’re alive with the sound of music.

    • gogoGorilla says:

Agreed. It is ill-fitting and WTF? You can see creases where it’s all pushed into the skirt.

I actually don’t mind the skirt part too much, but I like quilted fabrics and think it could have been very interesting in some other design. Not so much this one, lol.

      • Anna says:

It’s just Dior sucking at life since Raf Simons joined. No need to go further than that.

      • Naye in VA says:

Maybe the kid barfed on her just before she left the house and she just grabbed whatever matched. Thats the only reason i can think of somebody throwing on a long sleeved black tee with a skirt like that and calling it fashion

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

I don’t hate the skirt either.

…but I have a similar hairline and I would never wear my hair slicked back like that—too much forehead.

Portman’s beautiful but somehow always manages to irritate me.

      • Kiddo says:

        @TheOriginalKitten. I don’t think it’s the hair that’s annoying.

As to the dress, or skirt, it doesn’t look like it was made for her. It seems in need of alterations.

    • aemish says:

I’m pretty sure they tailor it to fit the actress as intended by the designer.. no?

    • amilu says:

Maybe it’s just schmutz on the camera lens, but I’m having a “Stars: They’re Jus t Like Us!” moment looking at Portman here. That’s how I wear a black top — covered in lint and pet hair.

Ok. On further examination, I now see it’s rain. Oh well…it was nice finding her slightly relatable for a minute at least!

  2. T.fanty says:

I usually like the big skirt/plain top combo, but oh honey, no.

    • poppy says:

the look is classic but ita, there is something off.
      skirt length, neck shape?

      • drea says:

I think it’s the fit. The waist of the skirt should be a bit tighter/smaller to give her a nicer silhouette. The top should be more close-fitting, and I think it would be better in a smooth, thinner knit. That sweater looks like something I’d throw on to run out to the convenience store.

  3. LadyMTL says:

Hmmm, I’m torn on Natalie Portman’s look. On the one hand, I do think that the skirt looks weird, but IMHO it’s the fabric more than anything else. If it had been made with something that looked less like tinfoil then it might have been really amazing. The sweater doesn’t help matters either, mind you.

  4. Liz says:

What material is the skirt part of the dress made from? It looks quite heavy.

  5. Stef Leppard says:

Kat looks like a train wreck. Unbrushed hair, clashing bright red lipstick, too small dress…smh.

  6. allons-y alonso says:

Where is Jamie Alexander? I like her.

Portman. Terrible; however I like the black top as a separate piece.

Kat Denning’s dress looks cheap and she looks like she couldn’t even be bothered. Also, i have a question that may come across bitchy: Is it just me or, is her character necessary in the sequel? I loved the first Thor movie but the ‘comic relief’ characters like hers were irritating and irrelevant.

    • starrywonder says:

She’s 100 percent not necessary in the sequel. Her dress is tragic. Girl you are stacked. Nothing to be ashamed of so learn to dress for your body.

  7. ds says:

I could actually endure seeing the dress though the first thing I thought was wt…?? And then there was the watch. The watch is just so not working here.

  8. JJ says:

I think she is trying an Audrey Hepburn look, it’s just embarrassing when you have a black person holding the umbrella for you. She is such a pretentious smug!

    • neelyo says:

I thought of Audrey Hepburn too. I don’t think she hired the umbrella carrier. I bet he works at the theatre or security or something.

    • JJ says:

Apparently Kat did not need anybody to hold an umbrella for her

  9. genevieve says:

I’m guessing it was supposed to look like something from outer space – the fabric reminds me of retro-martian movies. But it’s not working.

  10. missmerry says:

wait…is Portman wearing a watch?! LOL

  11. goldie says:

Natalie is so beautiful but THAT DRESS, utterly awful. I also get the distinct impression no-one likes to dress Kat and she seems to have no idea how to dress to suit her body. which sucks coz she has a Slammin curvaceous bod! but wenever u see her she looks so Meh…

  12. NerdMomma says:

For some reason ever since she got with the ballet guy, Natalie Portman has given me serious Goop vibes. I used to like her. Now I find her annoying.

    • Eva says:

Well, I don’t understand why she acts like she hit the jackpot with this guy,its very much the other way around. I mean he is neither good looking nor even a star by Hollywood standards.
Atleast Gwenyth Palthrows husband is an A list muscian and is relavent. Natalie Portmans husband is a no-name, ugly loser in reality. She helped his career big time by making him the face of a high fashion brand, she got him lots of magazines deals and exposure and her presence must have influenced the people at Paris Opera to hire him ats the director. Yes he is talented, but there are other talented dancers then him, But they did not leave their girlfriends of 4 years and knock up a movie star I guess. It must be nice having someone like Natalie Portman open all the doors for you.
Also like Gwenyth, she tries very hard to not act like an American. Just like how Gwenyth tries so hard to act brit, Natalie think she is French lol.

  13. tifzlan says:

Kat’s dress would’ve been better without the white part at the bottom.

  14. bns says:

Horrible. I have never understood why her style is so praised. She always ends up on best dressed lists, and I don’t get it.

  15. Kerfuffles says:

Natalie’s sweater looks like it needs a lint-roller.

  16. ZAK says:

I’m seeing Thor for Hemsworth so I’ll just have to bear another over earnest woman-child Natalie Portman performance. Oh joy.

Portman’s fashion sense has always been as boring as her performances. This dress just takes the cake though, it’s disastrous.

  17. Bex says:

    Natalie needs some accessories. Stat.
A belt for sure but also some jewelry. Not sure if the hideous skirt can be saved but it would have helped.

  18. loie says:

Is it ever okay to tuck in a sweater? I think she should have worn something form fitting instead.
Kats dress seems to squeeze her body into a cylindrical shape. Just weird; why would anyone pick that out to put on her curvy body?

  19. Applapoom says:

She looks so severe. This look also ages her.

  20. serena says:

LOOL, I loved the part about the slap. Now I want to see her character with Loki, just saying.

  21. stellalovejoydiver says:

Dior needs to fire Raf Simons.

  22. eliza says:

Dior is lost at this point. The stuff is just awful. It’s either plain and boring or gaudy and boring. Someone please save Dior!

  23. Yelly says:

I love Natalie always, but this dress, my goodness. It looks like Jiffy Pop.

  24. She looks like a cupcake. It’s a cute dress for someone a tad younger. Like one of the fanning girls. I’d like to see it on Dakota. Would make a nice change from the washout she usually wears.

  25. Mandy says:

I love Natatlie’s hair. I want to fix mine like that!

  26. Liberty says:

I dom’t hate it, but….it looks like what elderly though elegant women would choose to wear to an upscale charity benefit.

  27. Insomniac says:

I don’t get some celebs. I mean…seriously, if you have unlimited funding for your clothes–why in heaven’s name would you ever step out in something like that?

    • Tiffany says:

I am going to steal a quote from the great show that is the first season of Weeds, ‘If it’s free, it’s me.’

      • Insomniac says:

Haha, that is my slogan. But if I were getting paid 6-7 digits for a few months of work…I would definitely try to wear something easier on the eyes.

  28. Ellie66 says:

The sweater has smutz all over it she needs a lint roller. The skirt looks like foil with sharpie scribbles. Sharon Stone did it way better when she wore a Gap shirt with a fancy puffy skirt a few years back.

  29. aemish says:

I’m gonna have to go with baked potato disaster.. that dress is scary

  30. Bronwyn says:

Kat looks KILLA. love the dress and her styling.
natalie looks very haggard and the dress is awful 🙁

  31. Maarkos says:

I think Natalie Portman is wearing whatever garbage Dior gives her since she spoke out against Dior in 2011. I remember the Galiano incident where she got on her high horses and called him out, which resulted in him getting fired. She also deemed Dior as “racist” and that she will not wear anything of theirs for the Oscars. I thought that was pretty rude, since she is the face of the brand( and gets paid millions for it) and I think they must have had a talk with her. I think Dior is getting back at her by making all of her gowns really ugly. Have you ever noticed the gowns they deign for Charlize or Marion are usually beautiful? Natalie Portman and Jennifer Lawrence get stuck with the ugly gowns.

  32. Aria says:

The top part is a disaster. It looks dirty.

  33. themummy says:

She’s 5’3″. That’s not “so tiny” or even “tiny.” I’m 5’3″ (113 lbs) and I never feel tiny or really even below average height.

My boyfriend was going to Harvard when Natalie was and I saw her twice on campus. She’s normal in all ways (weight, height, etc.) except, well, very, very striking.

    • loma says:

She’s not 5’3″. Take off an inch or two. She’s 5’2 at the most. I’m 5’6″ in flats and she was much shorter than me in her Keds.

      • themummy says:

If you google her, on the sidebar it says she is 5’3″, as it also does on her IMDB and wikipedia. I dunno. It’s not important, I guess, but all I know is when I saw her she seemed exactly the same height as me, although she is petite. What do I know, though?

  34. loveisthecoal says:

*whispers* I actually love Kat’s dress. In fact, I love everything about her look other than the fact that the dress doesn’t fit!

    • j.eyre says:

*whispering back to loveiscoal* I agree – I love Kat’s dress and had it fit better, it would be smashing. But I must go further into the dark, I like Natalie’s look too. It looked better from the back, imo, the top had a big round cut out that contrasted nicely with the quilted skirt.

  35. Terrile says:

As long as she does not masturbate in a film (like she did in the movie Black Swan), I don’t care what she wears. As long as she is wearing clothes!

    Disgusting woman, by the way.

  36. I like the skirt, actually. I don’t like the sweater–it doesn’t fit, isn’t styled properly, and is the wrong texture to go with the skirt. A cashmere-like knit would have been better.

  37. Tig says:

Maybe Kat should give Christian S a call for her next red carpet. He recently dressed Christina Hendricks to rave reviews, and Christina’s fit challenges may be more challenging than Kit’s!

  38. Jess says:

I LOVE Kat Dennings! I have always thought she was gorgeous, but she looks stunning in these pics!

  39. TherapyCranes says:

    Uglllly.

  40. taxi says:

Dennings is a mess. Too bad, because she ruins a gorgeous vintage Lanvin which doesn’t fit her and was designed for a different body type. The dress would be stunning on Blanchett or maybe even Kidman.

  41. Rachel says:

I love Natalie Portman. She’s such a talented actress. I don’t hate the dress but I think the skirt of the dress is too big.

  42. alex says:

Even though Natalie Portman is more attractive than me and has way more money than me, at least she can’t dress herself for shit. I take great satisfaction from this.

  43. Anne says:

Yuk! yuk, double yuk! I love Celebitchy’s description of this dress as a baked potato – you know aluminum foil wrapped big round potato!

  44. kitt says:

Halloween costume. I thought it was candy corn on the bottom or bad wrapping paper for Christmas!!
