Jennifer Hudson debuts her new pixie cut at a BET event: gorgeous or tragic?

Here are some photos of Jennifer Hudson at the BET “Black Girls Rock” event in New Jersey a few nights ago. Jennifer debuted her new pixie cut at the event. Just a few weeks ago, she had long, boob-length hair and just last year she was trying to make bangs work. Is this the new trend for African-American women? Cutting their hair short and ending the over-processing? I’m asking because I’d like to think that Viola Davis started the trend. Here’s a photo of how J-Hud looked just a few weeks ago:

And here’s her current pixie:

Us Weekly compared this to Beyonce’s pixie cut (HAHAHAHA), and Miley Cyrus and Anne Hathaway. Is it totally wrong to say that I see a lot of Miley in this particular cut? I don’t mean it as an insult at all, I’m just saying that J-Hud’s cut is really similar. I do think J-Hud wears this look well – she looks much better than I would have expected. I think some women (like me) need some volume around their face, and before I saw these photos, I would have thought Jennifer would be one of those women. But she’s not. The shorter hair brings out her eyes and her beautiful lips. The shorter hair makes her look younger and sleeker and just “lighter” overall. I like it a lot.

PS… Jennifer’s dress is Balmain. It would have been great without the shoulder pads.

I think it looks really good on her! Amazing face for it

  2. bella mama says:

I don’t think its balanced enough. her head seems too small now

    • aemish says:

Her face is so pretty both styles look nice from the neck up, but she looks a LOT thinner with longer hair

  3. Tessa says:

Love it! It balances out her face. Very cute.

  4. Dani2 says:

Don’t exactly love it but it’s not bad at all.

  5. TG says:

I must be the only one who hates this look in her. She looks older and not attractive at all. I am still holding out hope that this is a wig. She and Bey look beautiful with longer hair not pixies.

    • jaye says:

It’s definitely not a wig. You can tell by the hairline. I think she looks gorgeous and the short hair , imo, makes her look younger and really accentuates her bone structure. And to answer Kaiser’s question about African American women following a “trend” started by Viola Davis…no, it isn’t. Black woman have been embracing their natural hair for many, many years. I stopped chemically processing my hair almost 11 years ago. Viola Davis looks gorgeous with her natural hair, but she certainly wasn’t the first.

      • Rachel says:

I think she looks beautiful with both long and short hair, but I agree the shorter hair accentuates her bone structure. Gorgeous. Like Shailene Woodley. Sometimes all the hair just hides the true beauty in the face. When you take away the hair, the face is the highlight.

And Kaiser, I’m usually anti-shoulder pad, but I think she is working them in that dress.

      • mabooski says:

but this isnt her ‘natural hair’ tho, its just SHORTER that doesn’t mean it hasn’t still been straightened.

      • Kate says:

I think two things started this trend. Remember when Rhianna started wearing her hair shorter. Also the Chris Rock movie, I think it was called “Good Hair”. I know several black women stop relaxing their hair after seeing that movie.

I think she looks pretty rather shorter or weaved up, whatever works for her

    • Sabrine says:

Too severe. It looks awful on her. She went from gorgeous to plain and homely with this style.

  6. Spooks says:

She looked much better with long hair, IMO. She also looked much better when she was heavier. Her face was much softer.
Also, too much blue steel posing.

    • Lucija says:

I also think she looked sooooo much better with more meat on her bones.

      • Emma - the JP Lover says:

You know, for a lot of people it’s not how they ‘look,’ but how they ‘feel’ about themselves. If she’s happy with herself (and by all accounts, she is), I’m happy for her. 🙂

    • Janet says:

Oh please, she’s hardly skinny. She’s at a good weight now, not fat, not thin. She’s just right. And she looks great with that haircut.

      • Lucija says:

I didn’t say she was skinny, but some people look better when they’re fuller. My mother, for an example, looks quite harsh in the face when she’s at her “ideal” weight.

  7. doofus says:

    she looks GORGEOUS.

  8. sweetpickels says:

I believe that is a pixie wig. I have friends who wear those from time to time. Its for when you want a new look, but don’t want to commit.

  9. sunny says:

Cute cut, but definitely still processed. Did she ever marry her child’s father?

  10. cs says:

I love this look! But I wish everyone would stop with the haircut when it’s just the weave being removed. I believe Alicia Keys is the only one that actually cut her natural hair to a pixie style.

    • Emma - the JP Lover says:

Halle Berry has also cut her natural hair to a pixie. It let it grow out when she was pregnant with Nahla, then cut it short a few months after Nahla was born.

  11. Elisabeth says:

a woman removing her weave shouldn’t get this much ‘talk’

  12. babythestarsshinebrite says:

    I love it!

  13. MonicaQ says:

I sliced off all my hair to get rid of the permed/relaxed ends. Rocked the Amber Rose for awhile and it is slowly growing back out. I’ve damaged it beyond most repair (my mother relaxed my hair at 5–it was not a good start) but all I can do is treat it better.

I think this looks good on her. Then again, I’m biased because I have a full face like her.

  14. Tanguerita says:

never mind the hair, but what in in the mother of hell is this lipstick? And her haircut isn’t tragic, but her outfit definitely is.

  15. Ashley says:

It is NOT a trend black women do it al the time. If anything solange is a great example.

    • Naye in VA says:

I think she still has a perm, so it’s not a natural move, but before ANYbody famous decided to get on the natural bandwagon Black women were doing it everywhere. The last decade has seen an exponential growth in Black women who are turning away from processing.

BTW she looks freakin amazing. It really balances the way her head sits on her smaller frame.

  16. PunkyMomma says:

    Love it.

  17. Merritt says:

I don’t love it, but I don’t think it looks bad. I wish she had gone with a darker lipstick.

  18. SBJ says:

It makes her look like a man, really not a good choice. It reminds me of Grace Jones, except Grace Jones was a beautiful woman and rocked short hair

  19. Elodie says:

The hairdo is gorgeous. The dress is tragic.

  20. themummy says:

I never thought her to be a beauty (not unattractive at all, though, of course–she’s very pretty), but his hair cut is amazing on her and I’m seeing her differently (physically, anyway). Her face is so beautiful. Wow. I love it.

  21. Shannon says:

Love it! Love everything about it! Get it J-Hud!

  22. MissBB says:

I think it’s more a Balmain shirt than a dress

  23. bammer says:

I like this look for her.

  24. MissNostalgia says:

I like it a lot; my hair is the same length. I was never a fan of masses of fake hair.

  25. JudyK says:

LOVE it on her…she looks gorgeous, but her skirt is AT LEAST 4″ too short, which makes her look less than classy.

  26. Peanut says:

I think it looks awesome!! But, I also rock a pixie haircut so I’m probably a little biased.

  27. AlmondJoy says:

“Is this the new trend for African American women? Cutting their hair short and ending the overprocessing?”

I hate to nitpick, but AA women have been wearing short hair for years, its not a new trend. Also, cutting your hair short does not have to be an indication of overprocessed hair. It could just be because a woman wants a different look or she’s trying something new.

With that said, I think she looks gorgeous and I love the cut! Jhud looks fierce!

    • manta says:

Agree. We’ve been seeing Dee Dee Bridgewater with very short hair for decades. I also remember Lisa Gay Hamilton from The Practice, and this show is what, 15 years old?
And almost 20 years ago, Skin, the lead singer from Skunk Anansie rocked the bald head (though not technically AA since she’s Brit). There are probably others I just don’t think about right now.

  28. floretta50 says:

Halle Berry one of the most beautiful women in the world wears her hair even shorter than this no one complains or even comment. Most African American women will look better with short hair because it’s more within their genetic make-up, when I see black women or celebrities with long flowing hair all I look at is their hair and overlook one of their best features, high cheek bones which many women go under the knife to get, which is more prominent now on Jennifer Hudson with her short hair. Most African American women have long hair underneath those wigs and fake hair because their hair are not being abused by chemicals or the environment and weaves are easier and more convenient in today’s busy lifestyles, believe it or not for lack of money. Hudson’s new hair style is very expensive to keep and maintain. Most people don’t have the money to maintain short haircuts, I know from experience your hair grows fast and needs constant trimming and frequent visits to the beauty salon.

  29. ladybert62 says:

    Love the haircut
    Hate the outfit
    Hate the lipstick

  30. Timber says:

I like it short, but with all of the wigs and extensions they wear, it doesn’t really matter.

  31. Maggie says:

She looks great either way but she needs to lower her hemline. She doesn’t have the legs for a short dress. I love the natural look hairstyle on a black woman too! I think they always appear more exotic.

  32. Domestic_diva says:

I just have such and anti JHUD mentality that probably nothing she does will ever be right that said that is the exact same pixie cut Beyoncé had and looks Nothing at all like Miley’s haircut only difference is JHUDS is black. As much as I don’t like her I think this cut looks better on her than all those lace fronts. And she still has a relaxer those edges are bone straight so she’s not necessarily going natural but maybe has decided to take a lot of the stress of her hair that constant weaves can cause. Hate the dress with the boots loosing weight does not mean u gotta dress like a hooker all the time. I actually really like the makeup even the bold pink I would never have the nerve to try it

  33. John says:

Gorgeous. Beyonce and S’miley WISH they rocked it this well.
Hudson is a beautiful, strong, talented, composed, confident woman, and that’s hugely attractive regardless of her weave or cut or turban.

  34. tessy says:

I love the haircut, but that isn’t a dress its a tunic. She couldn’t sneeze without showing off her underwear.

  35. Janet says:

It needs just a tad more volume up top and on the sides, but overall it’s a good look. The long hair was getting boring.

  36. Hmm says:

You’re criticizing the looks of someone who has serious body issues. “Oh but this is a gossip blog, so deal with it.” Just being rude and critical for the sake of entertainment has nothing to do with gossip.

  37. RHONYC says:

    wrong head shape for it.

i can’t BELIEVE her knockers are smaller than mine now!

her man must be PISSED! 😯

  38. Kim1 says:

Viola didn’t recently cut her hair she just stop wearing wigs.JHud took out the extensións and cut her hair.I like it I wonder if she will keep it for her wedding.

  39. Mika302 says:

She was wearing wigs…u can tell by the hairline. Also weaves if done right r NOT stressful on ur hair?!! If taken care of, ur hair can be quite long. But sometimes weaves or wigs r more convenient!. People who don’t know about weaves or wigs shouldn’t really respond.

  40. palermo says:

    I think she looks great!

  41. JustBored says:

That’s a lace front wig with baby hair.

  42. meh says:

Good god, her face is HUUUUUUUUGE

  43. Evelyn says:

I think Miley has more of a female beiber, hers is more Mia farrow with the side part, and the sides aren’t shaved

  44. TG says:

Wow I have read all the comments and am amazed at how many people like this haircut on Jennifer. I am one of the few on here that thinks she looks horrendous. Hope this is a fluke and other pics will grow on me. I do agree with the poster who said that many African American women look great with pixie style cuts because it accentuates their great bone structure. I had a co-worker who had longer hair and she got it chopped off and it was amazing how much more gorgeous she was. Too bad she didn’t like it though. Also I work in DC and black women have been wearing their hair super short like Viola Davis does for years. I usually like it because it gives them a commanding regal presence, but just can’t get down with Jennifer’s cut.

  45. jes_sayin says:

LOVE IT. She’s got the face for it.

  46. aqamarina says:

Hey most of you guys have been fooled , like beyonce and Nene it’s still fake hair.
But its a great lace front, better than her busted fringe pieces.

  47. Jag says:

    I like it.

  48. Kit says:

She looks damn good! Not really a fan of pixie cuts, generally speaking, but on her it works.

  49. jesb says:

She looks amazing and is becoming such an inspiration to many young black women. She has come through so much in her life and she’s still working it and doing great.

  50. Jess says:

She looks gorgeous no matter what, love her!

  51. Grace says:

This is a wig. I know Jennifer Hudson’s wig stylist. Her name is Babe Savage. She is phenomenal. Love the look!!
