Over the weekend, Leonardo DiCaprio made a special appearance at the LACMA Film + Art gala honoring Martin Scorsese. Marty and Leo are super-tight. They’ve spent the last decade collaborating together on film after film. Their latest collab is The Wolf of Wall Street, the true story of Jordan Belfort, a stockbroker in the early 1990s, played by Leo.
The Wolf of Wall Street was originally supposed to have a splashy Oscar campaign starting right about now, with a mid-November release date and all the fixings. Then Marty (or someone, maybe Harvey Weinstein) got cold feet, and pushed the release date until next year. It looked like Leo’s Oscar campaign was supposed to wait. But like so many movies this year, everything is still in flux.
Now it’s looking like The Wolf of Wall Street will be released this year, this time with a Christmas release date. They’ll probably do special screenings for the Hollywood Foreign Press (gotta get those Golden Globe nominations), and maybe some fast and dirty promotion in early January with an eye on sealing a Best Actor nomination for Leo? Interestingly enough, from what I’ve seen of the early reviews for the film, the shoo-in for a nomination is NOT Leo, it’s Jonah Hill. Everyone is saying Jonah is wonderful and he’ll definitely get a Supporting Actor nomination (another one!).
Do you think Leo will actually campaign for another Oscar this year? When was the last time he was nominated? Let me look… oh, the last time was 2007! Yikes. So, it’s been a while. The Best Actor race is an embarrassment of riches this year though. Likely contenders: Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael B. Jordan, Idris Elba, Robert Redford, Matthew McConaughey, Tom Hanks, Bruce Dern, Christian Bale, Oscar Isaac, Joaquin Phoenix… and so many more. It’s crazy-crowded this year. So maybe Leo will get shafted again?
Here are some photos of Leonardo at LAX two days ago. We get it, Leo. You don’t want the paparazzi to get a shot of your face. You’re super-private. We know.

That head…
lol
^^ 😀
His face is just so meaty and squinty now… Of course he can’t help it but its such a turn off. And he looks a lot older than he is (by Hollywood standards).
Well, you can always try can’t you? But by the looks of contenders It’s a bad year to be anything other than stellar.
Yeah. His performances have been very lackluster lately. I think he’s wildly overrated anyway.
Anyway, it will be tough for him to even be nominated much less win the thing. He’d have to get past Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years A Slave) or Idris Elba (for the Mandela movie) and that will be almost impossible.
This Pillsbury Doughboy Modelizing jackass..
You just called him fat, but he’s the jackass?
Yup, and a modelizer
Like in the fassbender article, it’s fine and hilarious to rip on a guy for gaining weight but if we did it to a 38 year old woman we’d go nuts.
LOL.
True but we will do it anyways mark. Love it. He’s a PBDB
I think he should get an Oscar. I’m not saying, that for this particular role, but he just deserves for this award, cause he’s an amazing actor. It’s the same, as Gary Oldman or Kevin Bacon, they’re all underrated by the Academy.
Gary Oldman is too good for an Oscar. There should be an award named after him, actors should win The Oldman.
I love this idea! 🙂
LOL Brilliant!
He is nothing like Gray Oldman.
Yeah, Leo’s a fine actor, but he’s no Gary Oldman, and in my book, he’s no Kevin Bacon, either. I do love the idea that Gary is too good for an Oscar!
As if DiCaprio or Bacon were in Oldman’s league. They’re amateurs next to him.
DiCaprio has been terrible in his last few films. I think his time has passed.
Kaiser, the film is still being edited, so where are you reading reviews of a film that isn’t nearly finished yet? How can Jonah be getting great reviews if its still being edited as Leonardo stated at an event a few days ago?
I like Jonah, so if that’s true, great!
It’s funny you put Idris Elba in the list….I highly doubt he’ll be nominated as none of the reviews had said that his performance was staggering (at least the ones I read)
My sister is putting her money on Cumby that he’ll be nominated this year (which I highly doubt but never say never). Anyways if Cumby is nominated I’ll be happy but losing my money to my sister…if he isn’t I shall be gaining some 😛
Ha, what a great bet! I doubt he’ll get a nom this year, but who knows? I don’t know anything about his role in August, so I have no idea if he could still be a contender for best supporting actor.
Heard his role is very small like 10 mins so I doubt it doll.
Also I am hearing it will be Chris Cooper who’ll get a nod for that movie if anyone does get it.
I am sure BC will get more chances in future to be nominated so its all right…..baby steps 🙂
Haha, lol no, no chance.
Leo isn’t ageing well at all….
On another note he is an excellent actor who should have won an oscar or oscars by now. The guy is overwhelmingly underrated if you ask Me!
That’s because the Academy loves toying with him, he really wants that Oscar and deserves one, but they will probably reward him for a lesser performance.
I see all these little snickering comments about his head or his bad looks etc but I would rather see Leo than some of the “pretty” boys that are drooled over on this website in a film. Leo def outgrew his pretty a long time ago. But he’s got good acting skills and most importantly, he has screen presence and charisma.
Buckwild- You took the words right out of my head and put it so eloquently!
I wonder if he were seen as a nicer guy if people would be more forgiving of his looks. Like, if he had a wife and a couple of kids in tow or was constantly seen doing charity work, would people still criticize his head/hair/gut?
I think he’s a nice guy. I’ve never heard stories that he’s rude or anything. And who cares if he’s always with young hot models. Dude just wants to play and he knows it. I’d rather him do what he wants then get married and cheat all the time. That would make him a doosh imo.
I agree so much with this comment!
Who gives a crap abut Hemsworth this Channing Tatum that. LOL I mean come on. Leo has done a diverse range of interesting characters and he’s always making pretty decent choices for films. Call him fat and meaty all you want… so what if the dude likes to date VS models? Leo obvious really loves acting and he’s no longer the Teen Beat pretty boy, but he never wanted that anyway.
Apparently it will compete at the Golden Globes as a comedy. Considering the Oscars rarely award comedies, I doubt much will come of it. The movie is also nearly 3 hours long. A 3 hour comedy about a Wall Street douche…no thanks.
Isn’t “trying for an Oscar” an annual tradition for Leo at this point?
I do agree with Violeta – he’ll likely be nominated again and again, for years, but will only win for a lesser (for him, anyway) performance.
Leo is too good for the Oscars. Love him, always dedicated and professional.
That sh!t is all about publicity and as was pointed out he hates the exposure.
I agree with this completely. ^I love Leo.
I love him too. I liked him back when he was doing shitty films (ie the Beach) then he became more and more popular because of his interesting and thoughtful choices in film. Blood Diamond, Inception, Catch Me if You Can, Revolutionary Road, the Departed, Shutter Island, the Aviator, Django… and lets not discount Titanic, Romeo and Juliet, and his earlier roles in the Basketball Diaries, Gilbert Grape, This Boy’s Life, etc. He has one hell of a resume.
Yup! Brilliant movies on that resume and really bad ones but he just stays a little ahead of the curve. Love the cigar-smoking, very masculine, sorta rowdy, old-Hollywood thing. He’s still handsome too, IMO. He’s one of the Hollywood O.G.’s of our generation for sure. Much respect.
I agree. I love almost all of the movies I’ve seen him in and I think he’s long overdue for an Oscar. He should’ve gotten it for “Blood Diamond” or “The Aviator”.
Yeah, pfft. The academy. What a bunch of stiffs. I don’t take the Oscars too seriously. I have had some major OMFG moments watching them the past few years.
I was surprised that he didn’t win for the aviator. He was a fantastic howard hughes. Also surprised he didn’t get a nom for Django. That was his most interesting, diverse role to date. And he looked like he had fun doing it! He wouldn’t have beat Christope Waltz, but still deserved the recognition.
Jeff Ross at the James France roast: “Jonah Hill was going to be in the last Transformers movie but they cut the role of the car that transformed into a giant asshole after it was nominated for an Oscar.”
Dude is about to become even more insufferable.
