Carrie Underwood keeps a food journal or she’ll never stop eating: ‘I don’t get full’

You know that I’m not Carrie Underwood’s biggest fan, but I ended up liking her in this new Redbook cover interview. Carrie is probably promoting the revival of The Sound of Music (she’s playing Maria, which is madness), and plus, the CMTs were last night and Carrie was co-host. So, what did I like about this interview? I like that Carrie is honest about how much she loves to eat and the steps she takes to control her food intake:

She keeps a food journal: “You know how you feel when you get full? Well, I don’t get full. I can eat a lot. Mike [Fisher, husband] and I were in Italy for 10 days and I put on 8 pounds. So in real life, I have to make sure I’m not eating just to eat.”

She gained weight on American Idol: “It was on the Idol tour [after I won]. I put on a lot of weight [during the show] because we were locked in a room all day with a craft service table. I was bored, so I was just eating. I was never overweight, but I feel better with myself now.”

Trust in her marriage: “If he goes to a bar with his friends, a tabloid is going to report about it. Same goes for me. Trust is what it is. Either you trust someone or you don’t. And I’ve never trusted anyone more than I trust Mike.”

She does her own laundry: “I do not like people touching my underwear. That’s just weird! I travel with a washer and dryer and I like cooking on the bus too.”

[From Redbook]

I go through phases like that too, usually when I’m PMSing. I’m just eating and eating, not because I’m hungry but just because I don’t realize when I’m full. I’ve noticed it a lot lately – I was always told, when I was a kid, to finish everything on my plate and I still do it now, regardless of whether I actually felt full before I finished everything. Anyway, I like Carrie more for talking about how much she eats. She’s refreshingly honest about it.

I so prefer this to the “oh, I eat chocolate all day and never work out” nonsense.

The food journal thing works, too. In NYC, they also display the calorie count next to food on sale and it really makes me think about what I’m consuming.

    • JenD says:

The calorie count of food on menus has definitely made me rethink before I order, too. It’s certainly shocking.

    • lucy2 says:

I’ve seen the calorie count on a lot of restaurants here in NJ too, mostly chain restaurants. It is astonishing how high some of the meals are.

Keeping a food journal totally works for me. I need to get back to it.

    Thats sooo me

Not only do I agree this is better then “I eat chocolate all day” plan but I also have a food journal where I keep track of calories and even my Carb intact after 4 pm to go along with being at the gym 5 days a week using my hubby’s plan of three days on/one day off. And I still feel like my butt jiggles too much. *pouts*

I believe her, and she must have good personal discipline. My father-in-law has this issue, and he has major weight issues.

I eat out of boredom, too, if I don’t stop myself, and I make worse choices than I do if I’m actually hungry. I know it works to keep a food journal, but I just hate it. Feels like homework. I like that she admits she has to watch it, too.

Sugary/starchy foods in particular tend to jack up your blood glucose levels and then they come crashing down again once your insulin kicks in, so that often as not you’re starving within an hour even if you just ate like a pig.

I’ve always liked Carrie because of how honest she is. Far as I know she’s quite straightforward, but never rude or mean about anyone.

  7. Sel says:

She’s talked about using afoot journal in previous interviews too, so I do believe her. She really works hard tone in her shape and I love her honesty about that.

  8. Mata says:

I’m with her on all counts. I don’t get full and I don’t like people touching my underwear, either. I always thought the last one was just my own weird hang-up, so I’m glad she mentioned it.

  9. mickey says:

Ummmm….she travels with a washer and dryer?

    • Jayna says:

      On her bus.

    • TG says:

I think she means the washer and dryer are on her tour bus, or at least I hope that is what she meant. Ever since she lost all that weight after Idol she has talked about keeping a food journal and it must be working. I don’t like her partly because she looks like a pageant queen all the time but I love that song “Blown Away”.

What works for me is I eat a good portion of hot oatmeal (quick oats – use milk) with blueberries and toasted almonds for breakfast five days a week. I’m stuffed for hours. I’ve lost 20 pounds so far. Also, Saturday is “treat day.” I always have that to look forward to, where I can eat what I want. It is the best diet tip I can think of, keeps you from being discouraged.

Refined carbs are not your friend. They will make you fat and likely raise your blood sugar and cholesterol after a while.

I never get full either. To stay slim I have to adhere to strict portion control but I eat what I like, just not mass quantities of it. I could easily eat a pizza by myself.

  12. SamiHami says:

There are some days that I refer to as my “bottomless pit” days…those days where I feel like an eating machine. That usually happens when I am PMSing, and I have my ovaries removed two weeks ago so hopefully those days are over! But one thing I have found to be helpful is journaling my food online. I know there are a couple of sites that are popular for that; I personally like Sparkpeople. It does make it easier to keep track of what I’m eating and how much fat/calories/carbs are making up my diet.

I also like that her pictures here don’t seem to be photoshopped into oblivion.

These are the reasons why I like Carrie Underwood:

    – She’s vegan because she loves and does not want to harm animals:
    – Her support of gay marriage
These above two are viewpoints/practices that are not necessarily supported in her field or by her fans so I think that it is extremely commendable that she is outspoken about them.
Her voice – I think she is CRAZY talented and is extremely professional about the way in which she approaches her music

Now this laundry thing knocks it out of the park for me. I freak out at the thought of other people touching my underwear. I think that we need to lobby congress to have a statue built in her honor.

There’s a Japanese teaching called ‘Hara Hachi Bu’ or ‘bunme’, which basically says ‘eat until you’re 80%’ full. I live by it now, after years of trying to figure out what it takes to kick that finish your plate habit. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hara_hachi_bu

  15. feebee says:

Her legs looked particularly great when she walked out on stage last night so it’s working for her. I had a couple of days of detox soup and then had a roast pork dinner with way way way too much crackling. This morning the whole ‘eating till past full’ thing is still ringing through my entire body. Maybe it’s because here in the US I have to go to the butcher instead of the supermarket to specially get pork with skin on. I feel so deprived, ha. Except for last night obviously!

  16. Beatrice says:

It isn’t easy to maintain a healthy weight–good for Carrie for admitting it. A food journal helps me tremendously, too. It used to be a lot of work but I have an app on my phone that automatically pulls up all the nutrition info for the foods I enter as well as a scanner. I use it to plan meals as well.

  17. Gia says:

I know how she feels. Ever since I had my baby and was no longer nauseous with my stomach all squished up into my throat, I have been insatiable when it comes to food! I’m trying to binge on healthy things though. I’m not ready to hold back yet. I deserve to fill my face after that pregnancy! I earned it 🙂

  18. Relli says:

I know right I was so meh on her for years then I heard an interview on radio M with her gosh darn it she made me love her. Totes agree on the underwear.

  19. Lucy says:

Great for her! She looks happy and healthy.

  20. Bodhi says:

All this makes her more down to Earth, but I am still not a fan. I currently live in Oklahoma & she does do a TON of recovery work every time we get hit my a tornado & I DO like that

  21. nicegirl says:

I know I am getting old because I so love that lace blue and red dress. super cute

  22. miasys says:

She is unrecognizable on the cover of that magazine, I thought it was Reese Witherspoon. What did they do to her? That said, this warmed the cockles of my cold, black heart. Her voice is amazing. I wish she’d use less spackle- she is so gorgeous when she’s not tricked out like a drag queen.
