Jennifer Lawrence in candy-coated Dior at UK ‘Catching Fire’ premiere: fun or fug?

Jennifer Lawrence

I’ll admit to getting a little carried away with all of these photos from the London premiere of Catching Fire. Here we go, right? Let’s start with Jennifer Lawrence, who stopped an interview on the red carpet to meet a crying little girl (the video is here and might make you sob too, plus you can catch a glimpse of JLaw’s cool red coat). Jennifer is wearing Christian Dior of course. She has to wear Dior because girlfriend wants to get paid, which is fine. Nothing wrong with that at all, but this couture design is so damn fug.

The dress isn’t all bad. The backless, drapey part is cool, but the white fabric is all wrinkly and not tailored very well to JLaw’s amazing figure. This dress has the potential to be a very fancy toga, which would have its (debatable) merits. Don’t even ask me what’s going on with the embellished skirt. It honestly looks like someone crushed a bunch of multi-colored suckers and stuck them onto the bottom half of this dress. The colors are wild and fun, but the execution is awful. Do better, Dior.

What does work really well at this premiere is Jennifer’s hair. I’ve been struggling with my feels over JLaw’s drastic new Gosselin ‘do and have fallen prey to a fair amount of denial over these locks. Jennifer’s hair looks really good here though! The cut is much more flattering when it’s swept off her face instead of just hanging there. I could get used to this new hair on her.

Elizabeth Banks went with a strapless, canary yellow Jason Wu ball gown. I actually really like this dress on Elizabeth. The cut-outs on the side are a bit weird and unexpected, but they’re funky and adventurous too.

Jena Malone proves once again that she’s got no idea what to wear, ever. Jenna’s ultra-fussy Monique Lhuillier gown in fire engine red was waaay too much for this event. She should have gone with something much simpler. This dress is definitely wearing Jena.

The male actors — Liam Hemsworth, Sam Claflin, Josh Hutcherson, Stanley Tucci, and Donald Sutherland – were on hand and all suited up for your viewing pleasure. Sadly there was no Lenny Kravitz to be found, which nearly breaks my heart. Still there is plenty to hit here. Would it sound weird for me to say that I’d pick Donald out of all of these guys? He’s got such a seductive voice. I’m weird about voices, but I’ll take the Hutch as a back up plan. Now it’s your turn. Who would you hit?

  1. bns says:

    That haircut was a mistake.

    • BW says:

At least with it swept back, it looks like she’s wearing it in a French twist, from the front.

How are the ladies not freezing? Donald Sutherland is wearing a suit and tie, AND overcoat, AND shawl (it’s bigger than a scarf).

    • Samtha says:

She should go for the Mia Farrow cut, I think. It would look less soccer-mommish.

    • Christo says:

Agree 100%. It looks like a weird hybrid of Miley Cyrus and Evan Rachel Wood with nothing benefiting her natural features.

  2. Bubbles says:

She never looked this bad. The dress, the hair, the make up. And her smile looks forced.

    • Spooks says:

Her smile always looks a bit strange. I love Jenna Malone so much, and she’s so pretty ( prettier than JLAw, IMO) Why did she wear that dress?

      • Liv says:

Seriously? I don’t know Jenna Malone much, but I can’t stand her. Don’t find her beautiful, don’t find her likable (how she secured the role is not speaking in her favor).

But thank god we all find different people attractive, otherwise life would be pretty boring 😉

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

I do not find Jena Malone even a little bit pretty, even though I am fond of her as an actress. That dress is simply atrocious.

        J Law is a disaster.

Elizabeth Banks is the only one who looks good IMO, minus all the blush/bronzer.

      • Baskingshark says:

Malone is excellent in the movie. IMO, she’s the standout among the other tributes.

    • LadyMTL says:

A former boss of mine has the exact same smile and it does look weird but it’s not normally forced (at least not in my boss’ case it wasn’t). As for the rest of the look, well…I don’t hate the hair now that it’s up but that dress is completely awful. I can’t think of one good thing to say about it.

      • Migdalia says:

Same with my sister…her smiles 90% of the time look forced to me, but I know they’re not. It has to be a facial muscle thing.

    • Anne says:

Actually, no, it’s probably not forced. I have the same type of face. When I smile, it looks like my mouth can’t overcome my face enough to look natural. My mom, who is a doctor, said that I could get plastic surgery to give me dimples if I really wanted that to change (just to be clear, she wasn’t advocating for plastic surgery, just telling me the options in case I cared enough to change it). Apparently it’s just something about facial muscles being too medial, and the surgery to give you dimples basically pulls them a little more to the side.

      • Fatkid says:

There’s a surgery to give you dimples?!? That’s crazy! I’m torn between feeling that this is a bit much for percieved physical perfection (not in the situation you described obviously) and feeling that it’s pretty cool that we understand the physical structure of our bodies in such amazing detail – dimples, that’s all muscle and soft tissue, amazing.

  3. Tiffany27 says:

JLaw looks like a stay at home mom at the cotillion.

    • Arock says:

She looks like she’s going to the candy crush homecoming. Smh.
Elizabeth banks looks beautiful and I like the red dress, maybe for a different event but its stunning.

  4. Dani2 says:

That dress is one of the most confusing dresses I’ve seen in a LONG time. The hair looks less soccer mom-ish here though which is an improvement.

    • claire says:

That dress is super fug. It could have looked cute if the candy design cut all way up to the shoulder, maybe?

      • Stef Leppard says:

That dress is hideous. It’s just not flattering at all. I wish it was short, tight, and the candy coating covered the whole thing. Then it would be cute. And I think she looks better with long hair but she’s definitely pretty enough to pull off a short ‘do.

Oh, and I surprised myself by thinking “I would definitely hit Josh.” I think that interview he did recently influenced my lady parts.

  5. Jade says:

I Love her new Haircut 😉

    • Mauibound says:

Me too! I’m loving the pixie cut revolution going on around hollywood right now! I guess I’m tired of everyone one looking like they’re from one one of the “housewife” shows. Great change!

  6. Toniko says:

Rachel Zoe – ruins everything what she touches.

    • Liv says:

Is she still her stylist? Ugh! I thought she got another one. She should get Zoe Saldana’s stylist, Zoe always looks fabolous and gets beautiful dresses which really suit her!

  7. Kiddo says:

I like Jennifer’s hair that way too, off her face. Or she could just have it sheared in tighter in the front. Don’t like the long bangs on her with the short hair, at any rate.

That dress is terrible in the front. But perhaps someone will comment after me that I don’t understand fashion, to which I will reply, “I guess not”. It looks like a failed experiment. Or maybe someone ran out of candied sprinkle material on Project Runway and used it anyway.

  8. YummyMummy says:

Hate the dress and the hair! Hope it grows quickly!

  9. Anna says:

Marion gets decent* Dior. Natalie gets decent Dior. Charlize gets decent Dior. Then they dump all the poorly-constructed, ill-fitting garbage on JLawr. WHYYYYYY?

*I think the only really GREAT Dior by Raf Simons has been the one Nicole Kidman wore at Cannes.

  10. smee says:

Yeah, the cut of JLaw’s dress is terrible. She prob. fell in love with the multi-colored gems (or whatever that is). She’s so young and beautiful that even a crappy dress is still great.

Donald Sutherland – swoon! He was supa-fine in his day and he looks really dapper here.

    • Arock says:

Agreed. That’s what it is. Outside the obvious wierd 80s gems then cut and lines are way off on her.

  11. Vera says:

    Cute hair. Project Runway couture.

  12. marie says:

Cannot take her seriously anymore. She’s like the rest of them, just playing a part to feed her ego and make millions. Give me Mia Wasikowska any day.

  13. Lempicka says:

love the hair sleek like this, dont do the gosslin!
btw wheres Woody?! want a pic of him too!

  14. Tessa says:

The hair was a mistake. I’m trying to like it, but I can’t. It’s bad.

  15. Eve says:

Sam Caflin — boy, that is one ill-fitting suit (although I do think it’s just really difficult to dress his pear-shaped body).

  16. Eva says:

    Sgt. Oddball

  17. nico says:

    Please fire Raf Simons.

  18. j.eyre says:

I call a timeout on cutouts until designers can remember how to do them right.

I do like the back of Jennifer’s dress..

The men all look amazing. Absolutely call it for Donald – Hawkeye? Are you kidding me? He looks incredible. Sam is so edible here in his effete faux-ascot – I’d take him seven ways to Sunday. Josh Hutcherson is so beautifullly tailored in that suit. Stanley Tucci is a forever dong and The Lesser Hemsowrth wouldn’t make it over the threshold but he looks good.

  19. stellalovejoydiver says:

I love Elizabeth Banks’ dress. Jennifer and Jena look awful.

  20. Ninks says:

I hate the dress. Dior was such a mistake for JLaw. Love her hair like this though.

Maybe it’s because I’m 30+ and 5’8 but JHutch does nothing for me. I can see why teenagers might like him, he has the slightly sexless look that boybanders have, but that’s it.

  21. Rose says:

Omg mascara down my face at that video 🙁 She’s so sweet. I’m getting a princess diana vibe off her with that hair and being so sweet to fans. I like the hair, I really respect that she just strikes out on her own. I had short hair for ages and you do come up against criticism but short hair is just so liberating!

    • Gossy says:

Honestly while it was a nice thing to do, if she really ran off in the middle of an interview that’s highly unprofessional (which she seems to have a history of…like flipping the finger at the Oscars). I didn’t see any running off from interviews, though, so whatever.

Anyway I hope the little girl was crying over something unrelated to the red carpet premiere because if she was crying over not being able to meet J-Law or any other stars, that kind of rewarding crying with whatever they want is a bad message to send.

      • Maum says:

Gossy you do know that the little girl was disabled and in a wheelchair right?

      • MisJes says:

Gossy, since you obviously didn’t bother to take a look at the footage, let me fill you in:

Jennifer and Francis Lawrence (Director) were greeting fans along the barrier, when they met this particular little girl, who was a bit overwhelmed I think. She is wheelchair bound and couldn’t get close enough to the barrier to see Jennifer properly. Jennifer asked Francis if they could remove the barrier so she could slip through to take pictures/cuddle with the little girl, which he did with the help of one of the carpet attendants.

The fact that you’re trying to nit-pick at her for such a sweet, kind act – I can’t even with you.

      • Gossy says:

Why should it matter she was disabled/in a wheelchair? She shouldn’t get special treatment for it other than what’s necessary for her to live a functional life (ie: ramps, more time to get around, etc.)

    • Maum says:

      SERIOUSLY????
Please tell me you’re a professional troll. As the mother of a disabled child comments like this make me weep. Life is tough enough for her and her family without having to deal with such lack of empathy.
I guess it is beyond you to try to project and put yourself in her/her parents’ shoes.

  22. MisJes says:

    Okay:

I’m not a huge fan of Jennifer’s dress, but I do think her hair and make-up are gorgeous. And I want the red coat she wore on arrival! I watched the video of her with the little girl, and it was incredibly sweet. I love Jennifer.

I disagree with you about Jena Malone – I actually think this is a very appropriate gown for a Catching Fire premiere. And her figure looks AMAZING in it! She was a favourite look, definitely.

I wish you would have posted a picture of Sam Claflin’s wife, Laura Haddock. Her gown was beautiful, and they were very cute on the carpet!

Finally – I’d take Josh Hutcherson all day, EVERY day. I think he’s incredibly handsome, and that jawline! My God, it’s incredible.

  23. Beth says:

Sam Claflin dressed as Willy Wonka?

  24. eliza says:

I hate everything they do at Dior anymore. They need a new designer stat.

  25. the other Kate says:

    Donald, of course. Always.

+ I really hate Dior. Can’t remember if there was ANY dress by Dior that I liked in last few years.

  26. pretty says:

awww i love Josh Hutcherson. He just seems so sweet!

In that picture with Liam,Jennifer,Josh all posing together, he looks very nice. !

  27. Frida_K says:

The dress looks like a Home Ec project.

  28. JudyK says:

Like JL’s hair; hate the dress. But LOVE LOVE LOVE Elizabeth Banks’ gown! Wow.

  29. serena says:

I hate her new haircut, it make her seems like an old lady or a ‘soccer mom’. The dress is ‘meh’, not crazy about it.

  30. Bella Bella says:

I think the hair is adorable! She’s so young. Once you get older you have to have a certain face to pull off a short hairstyle so let her have it. I just love her.

    • Amory says:

I agree. She looks very beautiful. The back of the dress is gorgeous, but the front just hangs poorly. I like the other two dresses, and I think they are appropriate for the movie. And that Elizabeth Banks looks like she’s 20 – the woman does not age!!

  31. Another Ann says:

I like JLaw, but she needs a new stylist, stat. That dress is a mess and does nothing for her. The hair is blah, and makeup is nothing special. She looked so great at the Oscars in that red dress a few years ago – what has happened since then? She hasn’t come close to looking that great on a red carpet.

Sam is really cute, but that suit is a hot mess. He does not have the build for a double breasted suit. Need to be a tall. lanky type for that.

  32. Quinn Parker says:

The cut/fit of Lawrence’s dress is abysmal…Dior should be embarrassed.

  33. SMT says:

Dior does a great job with Charlize, but they always fail Jenn. Her back is definitely not her strength (looks flabby here) and shouldn’t be accentuated. They need to dress her in fitted clothes that showcase her front. Also like many others have said, she needs a new stylist who understands her body and personality and dresses her to her strengths.

  34. kibbles says:

JLaw’s next fashion contract should be with Calvin Klein. Never thought she was a good match with Dior. Too haute couture and stuffy for her style. Natalie Portman is the type of woman who is a good fit for Dior. JLaw always looks great in CK and is more believable wearing laid back, simple, and sleek designs. This dress is so ridiculous looking. I wouldn’t buy it if I saw it on a rack in the department store.

  35. OriginallyBlue says:

Why is everyone hating on the hair? I think it looks good and she looks cute. I like it better than her long hair. Lol @ people saying she looks like an old lady or soccer mom. That is ridiculous the girl is in her early 20’s, a hair cut isn’t going to age her 10-40 years. Just stop, every woman doesn’t need to have long hair and it works with her face. Geez.

  36. Lucy says:

The only thing that makes me sad about all this is Sam’s suit. He’s so handsome, and talented, and seems like such a sweetheart, but his outfit is all kinds of wrong. And I think Jena looked really good, actually! Now, I LOVE Jen’s hair and makeup, but I’m not crazy about this dress, either. Hopefully she’ll go back to CK! Regardless of that, she looked happy to be there. They all did!

  37. SuSu says:

bad dress….. bad, bad, bad. Her co-stars look better

  38. Reece says:

The only one who looks good is Stanley Tucci’s wife. I can’t remember her name tho.

Maybe if JL’s dress was floor length? I hate the shoes. They should have been white or a jewel tone and jeweled earrings not those gold my first piercing things! I know I’m in the minority but I like her haircut.
EB’s dress makes it look as if she has muffins on the side which of course she doesn’t but it’s not cut for her.
I won’t even bother with the red monstrosity!

  39. Lemon Poundcake says:

OK, enough with the Kate Gosselin hair comparisons. This is a very cute pixie and it looks great on her. Gosselin’s hair was a hot asymmetrical mess. It’s not the same cut.

Also? It’s hair. She had the guts to cut it short, and it will grow back. Get over it.

    • pamela says:

I agree with you regarding the KGosselin hair comparisons. Get over it. One person made the comparison now everyone has latched on to it. If she likes her hair and feels good about it, why would we shit on her? Also, I like Raf S. as creative director at Dior. He has done great work and say what you will, Jennifer Lawrence is still gorgeous.

  40. Kate says:

Jennifer Lawrence looks like Miley Cyrus in that second photo, the “looking coyly and yet ever so awkwardly over my shoulder like the sweet ingenue my PR team wants you to think I am” one.

  41. nicegirl says:

Stanley Tucci. I find him so very attractive.

    • Liv says:

He seems so likable, doesn’t he? Like super nice and humble, which makes him incredibly hot in my opinion.

  42. Baskingshark says:

I went to this. A certain Tribute looked like he was coked out of his mind.

  43. phlyfiremama says:

ON the bright side, surely it must be uphill from here, right? The back on Jlaw’s dress is incredible but the front is nothing short of atrocious.

  44. A Fan says:

    Elizabeth Banks has ‘it’…

[also in the club: Zoe Saldana, Diane Kruger, Blake Lively, Solange Knowles]

[taking a break from the club: Camilla Belle, Nicole Richie]

[lifetime ban from the club: Katie Holmes, Jessica Simpson, Britney Spears, Kim Kardashian]

  45. Anne De Vries says:

The dress looks like one of those soft serve icecreams that’s been rolled in sprinkles 🙂

  46. Claudia says:

The video is really heartwarming; she is so genuine and sweet. As for her new haircut; I wish she would cut it more pixie-ish… ala Zoe Kravitz when she had short hair, or Mia Farrow. The current cut really does not flatter her face (ditto all the soccer mom comments)– it reminds me too much of Kate Gosselin.

  47. Maggie says:

I like her hair brushed back off of her face. So pretty!

  48. Meggin says:

That video with the girl is so sweet. She seems very genuine and caring. You can tell it’s not an act and she’s the real deal.
