Lena Dunham in black Theyskens at NYC Glamour event: actually pretty & flattering?

wenn20840939

Here are some photos from last night’s Glamour Women of the Year event in NYC. The event was sort of boring as far as style goes. Lena wore this Theyskens dress which… while it’s not the cutest thing ever, it’s actually one of the best dresses I’ve ever seen on Lena. Right? It’s somewhat flattering, the black looks good on her, she’s styled well, the pattern isn’t distracting. It works.

By the way, if you have about five free minutes today, I would highly recommend this wonderful interview with Lena and Mindy Kaling. I know those women aren’t everyone’s particular jam, but I found Lena to be tolerable-to-funny and Mindy was very funny. It’s neurotic and sweet and you can tell how much they enjoy each other.

Malala Yousafzai was honored at the event! I’m not going to talk about her fashion.

Rose Byrne in Jonathan Saunders. I actually love this dress, it’s cute and occasion appropriate. But! Rose’s makeup is whack. That’s what happens when you get a makeup artist who doesn’t know how to properly do the high-def makeup.

Lily Collins in Julien Macdonald Spring 2014. I actually kind of like this, even though it washes her out and even though it’s too much for this event.

Speaking of too much, Lady Gaga was also honored. This is what she wore.

Malala is the most beautiful of them all.

I love the fact that she always wears hijab. It takes alot of courage to show up at such event knowing you are the only one wearing it. I have so much respect for her. She makes Gaga look like a clown/ghost hybrid.

      • Sara says:

I’m sorry, but I have to correct you. Malala is wearing what we call a dupatta in Pakistan. Its essentially a long scarf that is worn as an accompaniment to the rest of the outfit that she is wearing, which btw, is called shalwar kameez. I, like many women in Pakistan, choose to throw the scarf around my neck. Malala chooses to cover her head with it for religious and cultural reasons. The hijab is an entirely different headdress, with strong associations to Middle Eastern cultures. Its worn very tightly around the head so that none of the hair are exposed.

    • BooBooLaRue says:

Agreed! She has a natural depth and beauty to her soul. Love her and only wish her the best!

    • kaligula says:

      +1 Yup

  2. Len says:

    WTF gaga

  3. Erinn says:

I’m actually loving the animal print dress. I never thought I’d say that.

Lena’s outfit isn’t flattering, or pretty imo. It’s pretty rough looking.

    • Belle Epoch says:

Aaaarrgghhh! Glad someone agrees with me! I think Lena looks TERRIBLE. I couldn’t tell you what her best look would be, but it would involve tailoring. She looks like a potato.

      • sumodo1 says:

Rimshot! Lena Dunham is a hard person to dress however that potato sack needs to be thrown out with the trash! Gaga looks like an utter fool! I mean come on now….

  4. aims says:

I have never watched Girls, I find Lena exhausting. I think she maybe smart, and that’s great. I just can’t go there though.

  5. Mika says:

Getting tired of your sh*t now, Gaga. Give us something else.

  6. Maum says:

Rose Byrne needs to get her natural colour back. That blonde is like Kim Kardashian’s- it makes her look cheap. Shame about the makeup disaster.

As for an answer to your question? NO and NO.
Lena needs to wear something tailored and that actually fits. That dress could work if it had a lower neckline and a structured bodice.
Her hair and makeup are really pretty though.

    • sumodo1 says:

Somebody needs to point out that excessive highlighting is the new raccoon eyes. It’s very distracting and I hate to see, it so I’m at careful to make sure that I don’t do it myself. Rose Byrne, please get a new glam squad!

  7. CrackFox says:

Malala’s skin! The orange! I live!

The second photo of Lena is very nice. It’s the best she’s ever looked.

Rose usually bombs on the carpet. She looks lovely here.

I am madly in love with Lily’s dress, but it is not right for the event.

I am a big fan of this new look Gaga is trying. I’d kill for those shoes, HOWEVER, the outfit is not good for this event

  8. WendyNerd says:

This is the best Lena’s ever looked. That kind of styling really, really works for her.

I honestly wonder what Malala Yousafzai thinks when she encounters people like this. I mean, you do have legitimately talented people like Lena Dunham and Lady Gaga (and yes, I do think they’re both talented). But there’s still this huge gulf between people who are just really good at entertaining people and a freaking Nobel Peace Prize nominee who stood up to and survived Taliban gunfire in the name of education at sixteen. And it’s not like with someone like Angelina Jolie who is always jetting off to refugee camps and stuff. And then you also have people like Lily Collins, who can’t act and is basically famous because her Daddy made phone calls. All of these girls who, once again, at best are just really good at entertainment, and often get so much more attention than amazing young women like Malala, who are major, tireless forces for social change. She doesn’t strike me as a very judgmental or sanctimonious person, but seriously, what are her thoughts? Do you think she tries not to judge?

    • Danskins says:

Very interesting point. You really have to wonder what she was thinking while she was there among other celebs (major and minor ones) with backgrounds that aren’t even remotely similar to hers.

    • lucy2 says:

It does seem an odd mix – people who do things seriously worth honoring (Malala) and those who will show up anywhere there’s a camera pointed at them (Gaga, and kind of Lily too).

    • minime says:

I wonder more what all these women feel when they arrive there and see Malala. I mean, a lot of them are only there because of their looks (not so much talent), they spent days preparing what to wear, hours on make up and hair, and I don’t know how much time inventing a plan for the media to pay attention. And then there is this girl with an amazing story of real life courage that is a symbol for many in the world. I know this is a glamour event and its their job to be there, but I think it must suck more for them than for Malala. They are the ones who probably would like to play a character like what Malala is in real life. She probably just sees it as it is: entertaining.

    • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

You read my mind–especially when I saw what Lady Gaga was wearing. I mean this isn’t some premiere–if I knew that someone like Malala was coming, I’d maybe have second thoughts about my outfit, take a little more care in what I’m wearing.

  9. Celia says:

Kaiser, I’m really happy you didn’t talk about Malala’s clothes while still including a photo for us. I hate when women get honored for humanitarian or civic work and people only talk about how they looked.

  10. Sullivan says:

Lena looks… better. Rose is a delicate beauty. Gaga is just silly, at this point. Malala is amazing.

  11. Patricia says:

Gaga has completely jumped the shark. It’s so old at this point and so far from original anymore.
Rose Byrne is an unbelievably beautiful person. Even when she is styled terribly she is still beautiful. I think it’s kind of endearing when she gets it a bit wrong. She’s such a great actress, I’d love to see her in more movies.

  12. Danskins says:

Glad to see Malala there; she looks striking in orange.

  13. DB says:

Lady Gaga’s shoes look like an optical illusion…like if I stare at those pearls for long enough, I’m gonna see a damn sailboat.

    • capepopsie says:

I agree! I thought there was a mirror below, but seeing the “heels” I realized I was wrong. Strange! I don´t get her Point, really.

  14. capepopsie says:

Well, I actually like Gagas outfit, minus the weird wig, makeup, gloves and stilts. It would look nice on a normal person, I Think. Collins is Beautiful and Malala cute. As for Dunham and Byrne, not really my cup of tea.

  15. TheOriginalKitten says:

I’m watching Damages right now and I think Rose Byrne is so incredibly beautiful but I SO much prefer her with dark hair. Regardless, she is one gorgeous woman.

  16. emmie_a says:

Rose Byrne is part adorable, part gorgeous. I’m jealous!

  17. lucy2 says:

Fashion stuff – love Rose’s, and the colors Malala is wearing. Lena – that’s about the best she’s looked in ages, yet I still HATE the sheer skirt thing. Lilly’s dress is interesting but totally wrong for this event.
Gaga looks like a creepy doll you find in the attic that then gives you nightmares for years.

  18. nicegirl says:

GO MALALA!!! How wonderful!!! Thank you for the picture!

  19. MissNostalgia says:

Lena looks great…..I love Rose’s dress!!

  20. jensies says:

I keep looking at Lily Collins’ dress and thinking how amazing it would look on someone of color. Like, imagine Lupita Nyong’o in that dress. Damn. She would kill it.

Agreed completely on Lena’s dress. I don’t love it normally, but I think she looks great. And her make-up is finally good here too.

  21. A Fan says:

Thought Rose Byrne’s dress looked beautiful on her…until I got to the blocks of cement on her feet.

  22. Enn says:

Stop slouching, Lena. For the love of God. Good posture costs nothing.

  23. TheOriginalWaffle says:

    Girl looks great.

  24. Daniel says:

Sorry but Dunham is just too plain looking for me. She’s not ugly, but not real good looking either.

  25. Coco says:

Lena’s hair do is slightly less unfortunate here.

  26. DesertReal says:

Malala wins at life, but Collins dress (thats onlybslightly better than her tattoo) takes it. I read that Dunham interview and…okay. Let me get something straight. She was tasked with interviewing Kaling but proceeded to spend the interview talking about herself? Right? I mean seriously, the broad only asks 1 question that doesn’t have an “I”in it. Insufferable much?

  27. Melissa says:

Malala is so strong and lovely. I met Rose Byrne once. She was dry and borderline rude. Even before that she was somewhat blah to me. I like Lena Dunham. I think she’s cute. Too bad I’ve only seen her dressed appropriately (for her body type that is) maybe once? Lily Collins is a cutie. No words for Lady Gaga.
