Katy Perry in red Naeem Khan at the Snowflake Ball: stunning or too carpet-y?

Katy Perry

Katy Perry attended last night’s UNICEF Snowflake Ball wearing a shiny red halter dress and a carpet cape. This is Naeem Khan, by the way, and the entire outfit is a bit too much for even overly dramatic Katy to handle on a red carpet. The lighting is terrible here, so maybe the dress isn’t as bad as it appears in these photos. The color is very rich and gorgeous. Katy did change outfits (into a leopard-print dress that truly works) for her performance, and you can see that dress here.

Katy has just been named a goodwill ambassador for the organization, and she says the following about her first trip: “You know I was going through a transition in my life where I felt like I had been suppressed and emotionally toyed with – and like I went there, and I was like, I have nothing to compare my situation to.” Once again, everything comes back to her divorce from Russell Brand. Oh well. Katy plans to do one UNICEF trip per year, so some good will come of this. Kids love her.

Katy should have gone for a simple updo with this elaborate dress. Her makeup looks fine by Katy standards. I’m not sure what she doing with the “praying” hand gesture.

Angie Harmon let her hidden freak fly in this Angel Sanchez dress that exposed so much sideboob I thought I was looking at a lad mag. Whoa, Angie! It’s always the ones you least suspect, you know? From the front, this gown was deceptively demure with a ruffled bodice atop a flowing skirt. Then — bam! — major sideboob at an event geared towards humanitarian efforts for children. So wrong.

Christina Ricci is usually one of my favorites at any event, and she looked really great here from the waist up. There’s just too much going on here with the tri-colored bodice and a safari-print skirt. I would prefer the bodice and waist with a simpler skirt. Check out the close-up of her impeccable makeup.

Katie Couric looked fantastic in a gold dress with a mermaid train. Everything about her look is perfect.

    Personally I love Ricci’s dress.

  2. Grant says:

That color looks GREAT on Katie.

  3. Jacqueline says:

So, being the official ambassador for UNICEF only means one trip a year? That leaves me scratching my head.
I like Ricci’s dress, it makes her already tiny waist look even smaller – very flattering!

  4. Kimble says:

    You censored side boob? Hilarious!

  5. Aura says:

Im a huge Russell Brand fan (so smart, sexy and cool) but he clearly has some issues. Is it so outlandish to wonder if he might have emotionally abused Katy?

  6. umyeah says:

Katy looks like she’s wearing a prom dress from the 90’s, with a curtain as a superhero cape. Katie, on the other hand, is glowing. Even though I’m not a huge fan of the dress itself, she makes it work.

    • Stef Leppard says:

I think Winona Ryder wore this exact same dress circa 1995.

My fellow 90s teenagers and 20-somethings: I know these fashions look outdated to us, but the 90s look is back. This is trendy again, we must accept it.

Oh my god, she’s the only person who has ever gotten divorced EVER, especially in Hollywood. What a rare unicorn she is. And now shs’e dating John Mayer, so obviously she’s the one with great judgment and her ex is evil. Sure. I wish this twit would stop commodifying her personal life, especially at the expense of her ex. Have a little dignity and self-respect and rely solely on your talent (such as it is) instead of trading on your love life.

    • Dani2 says:

Right? I’m sure she could find a way to relate the colour of her eyeshadow to her divorce, she’s overdoing the whole “poor, broken hearted me” thing.

  8. Nan says:

Have to think the lighting isn’t right for these photos of her — have seen other photos of the same event where her dress looked great. It looks cheap or homemade in this lighting. All of these dresses are beautiful though Katy stands out kind of like a sore thumb in hers.

  9. QQ says:

nope that looks like every other hammy overwrought costumey shit she insist on foisting over us, all we need is her Jazz Hands or Norma Desmond mid acting face and It’d be a True Katy Perry standard

  10. some bitch says:

Holy 90s, Katy Perry. I had a holiday dress in that same fabric/shade when I was 7 or 8 years old.

Katie Couric’s dress is gorgeous. She looks great!

  11. GirlyGirl says:

Yesterday she was on a sofa, today she dresses like a sofa

the circle of life is complete.

  12. Peanut says:

I think Katie Couric’s dress looks terrible!!

Ricci and Harmon look amazing. Katy Perry always looks over the top.

  13. yeahright says:

I think she looks absolutely gorgeous, love the red velvet.

I could be biased though because people always say that I look like her.

  14. YuYa says:

A bias cut dress with a seam down the middle? Budget IMO.

  15. Rover says:

That’s not a ‘praying hand’ gesture…. Its the commonest way of saying ‘Hello’ in India (with respect). You usually say ‘Namaste’ along with that gesture.

  16. taxi says:

Katie’s dress minus the cape would look much better. The cape looks like the cheap stuff in every strip-mall ethnic clothing window.

Angie’s dress looks as if it’s slipping downward. Not all straplesses stay in place well.

  17. Maritza says:

    They all look lovely.
