Barack Obama’s brother-in-law to write a book

For people who enjoy the personalities behind the politics, Craig Robinson is a gem. He’s Michelle Obama’s older brother, and one of President Obama’s closest personal advisors. He’s not really all about politics – his full-time job is as a basketball coach at Oregon State University. Now Craig is adding a new title to his career – author.

First Lady Michelle Obama’s brother is working on a book which, he says, is part tribute to his family and part inspirational guide.

Craig Robinson’s book, A Game of Character, will be published next year by Gotham Books. In a statement issued Thursday, Robinson said, “I’ve been privileged to know some extraordinary people in my life. I’ve watched as my sister, Michelle, a rock of a mother, became a leader in her own right. My brother-in-law, President Barack Obama, who I knew from the first time I met him had something special, continues to inspire all of us.”

Robinson, who coaches men’s basketball at Oregon State University, introduced his sister last summer at the Democratic National Convention in Denver.

Under any other circumstance, I would cry nepotism and be done with it. But Craig seems like a really decent guy with something to say. This isn’t even the first time he’s written about Barack and Michelle. In Time Magazine’s Person of the Year issue in December, Craig penned a really nice essay about his sister and Barack. The way Craig tells it, Michelle convinced her brother to play a game of basketball with Obama to see what kind of man he was. Long story short, Craig was impressed with Barack’s game and his gamesmanship. It’s a lovely essay, and I bet the book will be really good too.

Note by Celebitchy: Craig is featured in Barack’s A&E Biography, which I recently watched, and I agree with Kaiser that he seems like a great guy and that this should be an interesting book. Here’s a link to the full Obama A&E Biography online and there are also described and captioned versions available.

Probably a lot more interesting than Laura Bush’s memoirs…

  2. Syko says:

I’m just impressed that the in-laws actually seem to LIKE each other. Nice family!

  3. Baholicious says:

    What a family resemblance!

  4. tinat says:

He had a lot to say to the refs a few weeks ago when he got tossed from the game in Arizona, LOL.
I don’t suppose he’ll be using those words in the book!

  5. RReedy says:

Well, WHY NOT? Everybody has a story that they deem so VERY important to share that it deserves a BOOK.I am sure those rubbing shoulders with the new Prez will suddenly have a deal for a REALLY IMPORTANT story. Like we are waiting with high anticipation or something.
I just have to ask, dear readers: who really buys Jimmy Carter books?

  6. guest says:

hate it when the “relatives” become relative talking points. pun intended.

    @ baho – indeed

  8. Kaiser says:

Syko – I saw something on CNN, I think, about how great it was for all families to see how much the Robinson family has embraced Barack, and vice versa. They said it was a new era in familial relations, etc. It was really nice.

  9. rules says:

wow, not only he obama ordering people to adopt (see demi ashton story) he has ushered in a new area of people getting along with their in laws (see post above). You just know no one liked their inlaws before this.lol.

  10. Syko says:

rules, I don’t think it’s that way at all, but I do know that many families have conflicts with in-laws, and I think it’s refreshing to see one that seems to get along. I also don’t think Obama meant “service” as “rush out and adopt a baby to hang on your hip so you can be like everyone else.”

I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt, i.e., maybe he really does have something to say, but don’t you hate it when all the relatives and friends of friends start cashing in on their relationship to someone famous? Hopefully this is the exception to that sort of scenario.

he is prettier than his sister.
