2014 Screen Actors Guild nominations: who got snubbed & who made the cut?

wenn20778277

Good God, I was completely caught unaware this morning when I saw that the SAG nominations were coming out today. I thought the Golden Globe noms would come out first, but I seem to remember this happening last year too, where the Screen Actors Guild did their noms before the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Anyway, less talking and more nominating. Here’s the list of SAG nominees for film:

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role
BRUCE DERN / Woody Grant – “NEBRASKA”
CHIWETEL EJIOFOR / Solomon Northup – “12 YEARS A SLAVE”
TOM HANKS / Capt. Richard Phillips – “CAPTAIN PHILLIPS”
MATTHEW McCONAUGHEY / Ron Woodroof – “DALLAS BUYERS CLUB”
FOREST WHITAKER / Cecil Gaines – “LEE DANIELS’ THE BUTLER”

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role
CATE BLANCHETT / Jasmine – “BLUE JASMINE”
SANDRA BULLOCK / Ryan Stone – “GRAVITY”
JUDI DENCH / Philomena Lee – “PHILOMENA”
MERYL STREEP / Violet Weston – “AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY”
EMMA THOMPSON / P.L. Travers – “SAVING MR. BANKS”

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role
BARKHAD ABDI / Muse – “CAPTAIN PHILLIPS”
DANIEL BRÜHL / Niki Lauda – “RUSH”
MICHAEL FASSBENDER / Edwin Epps – “12 YEARS A SLAVE”
JAMES GANDOLFINI / Albert – “ENOUGH SAID”
JARED LETO / Rayon – “DALLAS BUYERS CLUB”

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role
JENNIFER LAWRENCE / Rosalyn Rosenfeld – “AMERICAN HUSTLE”
LUPITA NYONG’O / Patsey – “12 YEARS A SLAVE”
JULIA ROBERTS / Barbara Weston – “AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY”
JUNE SQUIBB / Kate Grant – “NEBRASKA”
OPRAH WINFREY / Gloria Gaines – “LEE DANIELS’ THE BUTLER”

Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture
12 YEARS A SLAVE (Fox Searchlight Pictures)
AMERICAN HUSTLE (Columbia Pictures)
AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY (The Weinstein Company)
DALLAS BUYERS CLUB (Focus Features)
LEE DANIELS’ THE BUTLER (The Weinstein Company)

Surprises? Let’s see. I didn’t expect Judi Dench’s Philomena to be a contender at all – critics praised Judi’s performance, for sure, but I think most people have left Judi off of their Oscar short list. As for Lead Actors – no Michael B. Jordan OR Idris Elba, but there’s Forest Whitaker? This was an exceptional year for actors of color, but I feel like establishment Hollywood is missing an opportunity to recognize some up-and-coming talents like Jordan, or someone who has been around, struggling, for years, like Idris. I was also surprised to see Barkhad Abdi’s name included – he’s a Somali-American who played the Somali pirate in Captain Phillips. Like Dench, Abdi got a lot of critical notice but I’m not sure if he made everyone’s shortlist.

It’s good to see Fassbender, Lupita and Chiwetel get nominations and I think they’re all deserving. I’m disappointed that Octavia Spencer didn’t make the list for Best Supporting Actress for Fruitvale Station – she was absolutely heartbreaking. It’s nice to see Sandra Bullock up there, but I tend to think the Actress race is going to be between Blanchett, Streep and Thompson (hopefully).

More surprises – no Robert Redford (for that boat movie), no Wolf of Wall Street, and no specific acting nominations for American Hustle beyond Jennifer Lawrence.

As for the TV nominations, you can see the full list here. There are too many to really analyze in-depth, but I’ll mention some of my highlights – NO Damian Lewis for Homeland (but Claire Danes was nominated). Kerry Washington got nominated, as did Matt Damon for Candelabra, so CB will be pleased to get some Matty D p0rn for the awards season. Bryan Cranston will be going up against Peter Dinklage and Kevin Spacey… interesting.

  1. LadySlippers says:

I agree — I think they are missing some important people of colour here. Whitaker is a powerhouse of an actor — he blows me away with damn near every performance. But there are certainly other actors & actresses that do the same.

I’d love for *all* the awards to get more diverse.

    • Lindy79 says:

      Agree completely!

    • Liv says:

Shouldn’t you love films to get more diverse? I mean awards are just an end product, not the problem itself.

      • LadySlippers says:

Yes! Films need to be more diverse in order for awards to get more diverse. But my point is we actually do have some diverse choices right now to pick from and they get ignored.

However, if diversity is rewarded at award ceremonies, it encourages producers and studios to accommodate as well. So I see both as being very interconnected and symbiotic. Encourage either one and it’s a win-win for everyone.

    • Luca26 says:

I feel like they have a system that encourages tokenism and they were overloaded by all of the important films this year from the black community. Instead of judging each film on its own they competed against each other to fill their pre-assigned slots. It’s really embarrassing that the Fruitvale was ignored .I would love to see more diversity in Hollywood films how many of the nominated films have all white casts when there are so many talented actors out there with various ethnicities that could play some of these parts.

    • Tatiana says:

What I don’t like of Whitaker been nominated is that he was awful in The Butler (well the movie was also terrible). I would have prefer seen Robert Redford or Michael B. Jordan nominated over him.

      • kady says:

Yes. The Butler was awful and he was not good in it. I’m disappointed The Butler got so many nominations.

    • T.C. says:

We have two black actors in the best acting, 2 black actresses in support and one Black actor in supporting actor. That’s not diversity?

      • Simmie says:

5 people out of a 20 person pool isn’t really that great.

      • T.C. says:

5 out of 20 is 25%. That’s pretty good seeing that the US Black population is 12-13%. Yes Idris missed but 5 others made it. You should be upset about Oscar Issac. Hispanics and Latinos make up a bigger US population but are underrepresented in film.

      • LadySlippers says:

Diversity needs to increase across the board.

There are still WAY too many white people on these lists. Hollywood should be a reflection of American society and not just what white men want it to be. (I say white men because, by and large, that’s who controls Hollywood)

      • Simmie says:

T.C. Who said I wasn’t upset that Oscar Isaac got snubbed? It’s not about a handful of black actors getting nominations. Like Lady Slippers said, diversity needs to increase across the board. I want to see high quality films and better roles for people from all ethnic groups.

  2. MrsBPitt says:

I thought Gravity and Bullocks performance were terribly overrated! Hard to pick the best from the rest…so many great performances. I do hope Breaking Bad wins ALL the TV awards its up for. I miss BB!!!!!

    • lisa2 says:

I finally saw it and it was great visually. But the story line itself was pretty average. Sandra was good but not award worthy if you saw any of the other performance. But it is nice to see her branching out of the rom/com and being recognized for it.

but I don’t think Gravity was the BP of the year..

      • Megan says:

I think Gravity will sweep the tech and visual awards and should from what I have seen, but in terms of film no. Maybe in a different year but this year we actually had amazing films come out not just great movies.

      • ANDREA1 says:

Yes Gravity IMHO was overrated the storyline was nothing of interest but I agree with megan that it should win technical and visual awards but I didn’t think sandra should be nominated for best actress. Just like Megan said this year ought to be competitive because great movies where made.. But I was hoping for Michael B Jordan and Octavia. Le sigh.

    • Luca26 says:

I liked Gravity but no way does Sandy deserve another Oscar. She is the frontrunner though.

    • V4Real says:

I totally agree. I like Bulluck but just like JLaw, her performance was not award worthy.

There are a lot of great names who turned out great performances in ciniema this year but I agree that Elba and Jordon should have made the cut. Oh, I could do without Roberts.

    • Tatiana says:

I thought Gravity was one of the best movies of the year (alongside The Act of Killing, Blue is the Warmest Color, Stranger by the Lake, The Great Beauty, Upstream Color, Blue Jasmine and Frances Ha). It remind me (don’t know why) of The Three Colors Trilogy: Blue. But yeah Sandra (though she was efficient and fine as Dr. stone) was just there. I think the movie is more of a director’s achievement than and actors one.

      • kristiner says:

Sandra was BETTER in Gravity than she was in The Blind Side. The Blind Side was terrible and so was her performance down to that awful accent and cheap wig/dye job. Weinstein just pimped it out like the chief master pimp he is during award season so she won.

  3. GlimmerBunny says:

Yay Jennifer Lawrence! Just like last year she’s the one I’m rooting for the most. My favorite actress <3.

    • MisJes says:

I’m excited to see her nominated, too! I expected her to be; critics are raving about her performance.

    • Athena says:

Yes!, very happy about Jennifer Lawrence’s nomination, she is incredible in American Hustle. As others have noted, Lawrence’s nomination has nothing to do with Amy Adams NOT getting nominated. Adams is terrific in the film, but Best Actress is extremely competitive and the list of actresses have pretty much been in the running a while now, have they not?.

The Supporting Actress category, with the exceptions of Lawrence, Nyong’o, and Squibb, I’d say that it’s a less competitive category this year. Besides, as wonderful as Adams is in AH, it’s been Jennifer Lawrence that has been garnering the lionshare of the praise since day one. The earliest reactions praised Lawrence’s performance as the “standout”, “powerhouse who steals the film”, “best in show”, etc., so, hence the nomination.

  4. Miss M says:

Forest Whitaker is my favorite contender in his category. I am surprised Redford was not nominated, he was superb in “all is lot” and that movie is fantastic!

    ps: No Amy Adams?

    • LadySlippers says:

      No Amy Adams. 🙁

She may become the female equivalent to Leo if this trend continues.

      • ANDREA1 says:

Its So sad ladyslippers because she was great in AH Amy Adams . I agree with her being the female Leo at this point So sad 🙁

      • Diana says:

Yeah, what a joke, that Lawrence gets the only nom for AH and no mention whatsoever of Amy.

      • Pippa says:

Leo fangirls are so over the top they act like Leo is some kind of poor underappreciated actor. History lesson for you. Jeff Bridges was in his 60s before he won his first oscar. Al Pachino was in his 40s. Please chill out with the poor Leo bullshit, he is doing fine.

      • LAK says:

Pippa ; I was really shocked when i realised how long it took for Pacino, Scorsese AND Bridges to receive Oscars. And for films/performances that were sub par in their various outputs.

Talk about handing an Oscar out because it’s become embarrassing NOT to have given the recipient anything for that many decades.

Mind you i felt the same way about Randy Newman who was nominated 15times before he finally won in 2002.

      • LadySlippers says:

Pippa, I’m not actually a Leo fangirl but he’s known for getting overlooked, so that’s why I referenced him. There are a great many actors and actresses that should have an award and sadly get overlooked. That was all I meant. Nothing more nothing less.

    • Barbara says:

Amy Adams is not competing against Lawrence. Adams is competing against the most heavyweight actress race is years; so for her to get in it’s not about being better than Lawrence, it’s about being better than Blanchett, Bullock, Thompson, Dench, Streep, Adele E, Brie Larson, etc.

So fed up with uneducated people saying it’s Lawrence putting Adams down. Adams was praised in the reviews and so was Lawrence; in fact most reviewers say that the ladies carry the film. It’s simply that the other acting categories are too loaded this year.

But at least they got the Ensemble nod and they will likely win that.

      • LadySlippers says:

I don’t see it as an Amy vs Jennifer thing — actors & actresses aren’t controlling the awards.

I see it as the awards ignoring a fantastic performance by a number of people and in this case — it’s Amy.

      • MisJes says:

        +1, Barbara.

  5. original kay says:

    Go Judi!

  6. Moiselle says:

25 slots that went to a total of 11 films. Very uninspired list.

    • fingerbinger says:

Except for a handful of films, this has been a boring year for films.

      • Barbara says:

Actually, this has been one of the better years in film this decade. SO MANY great movies, even in the blockbuster and big movie category, as well off course the indie list.

  7. Amelia says:

YES, Judi Dench!! So pleased that she’s still being recognised. She broke my heart in Philomena.
Pleased to see Daniel Bruhl up there too, slightly surprised there’s no Christian Bale for American Hustle.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I thought Philomena was brilliant and heartbreaking, and I hope Judi Dench wins.

I don’t think anyone who has seen All is Lost would be surprised that Robert Redford wasn’t nominated. His Botox and plastic surgery greatly limited his facial expressions, which were important to the film since there were about 5 spoken lines. It just wasn’t very good.

  8. Anna says:

Aside from Blanchette, I am not having high hopes for the fashion p0rn. As for the movies – seems like a decent line-up, non? I am SUPER excited for Rush’s Bruhl – I’ll be even more excited if he brings Chris as his date. Here’s to hoping!

    • lower-case deb says:

i’m counting on Lupita to bring some fierce and sass to the red carpet too!

    • j.eyre says:

I could die a happy woman if Daniel brought him as a date. I wonder if we would get a red carpet kiss out if it? CHems could bring Remoras ramp from when she wrenched the last scene from Gnat in Thor 2.

  9. INeedANap says:

As much as I love J.Law as an actress, does anyone feel like Amy Adams was snubbed? I think they were both absolutely incredible in the film. I can see the excuse being that Adams was leading lady rather than supporting, and maybe compared to the other leading ladies in the SAG list she didn’t measure up, but I don’t know. Thoughts?

    • LadySlippers says:

I think Amy might the female Leo.

      🙁

      • Honey says:

Leo is over rated he is not nearly as good as his fans think. There is a bunch of 30 something guys Fassbender, Ejifor, Hardy, Cumberbatch etc that are more talented and does more interesting movies. And by the way Leo got nominated plenty in his youth he was his generations Jennifer Lawrence (acting prodigy).

      • haha says:

@Honey LOL, nope. Leo is amazing. Period.

“Leo got nominated plenty in his youth” LOL, nope, again.

      • Han says:

I have to agree with Honey. Leo was nominated for all the big awards when he was 19 – Gilbert Grape.
I don’t think his work is as good as it used to be. I am not bowled over by his work anymore. Good solid actor though.

      • charlotte says:

But unlike Leo, she has never been close to winning a oscar. The only time she close to the gold, was most likely third (for Junebug, which I consider her only deserved nomination with the fighter one, although I love her in Enchanted and think she should have been nominated). Almost all her nominations have been filler nods, so I don’t think anyone in the academy think she is overdue at all. She has been lucky to be nominated when there weren’t a lot of strong performances.

    • Aly says:

YES. As much as I think Lawrence is incredibly overrated, she was good in the film, but Amy Adams blew her away. She was just phenomenal.

Jen looks like a child compared to the others though, just like in SLP. I don’t care how much make up you throw on her or how many low cut tops/dresses she wears, she still has a baby face and looks like a high schooler standing with a bunch of adults.

      • Liv says:

Isn’t her role Rosalyn Rosenfeld supposed to be a very young trophy wife? Or is that Serena?

      • MisJes says:

Yes, she’s a young trophy wife in AH. The role was written specifically for her.

I don’t think it’s fair to say that Amy was snubbed in favour of Jennifer – Amy was the lead actress in AH and Jennifer had a smaller supporting role, so they were never in competition. Perhaps compared to the other Lead Role contenders, the SAG didn’t feel her role should earn a nod. That’s hardly anything to do with Jennifer. Like another commenter below, I think Emma Thompson might have just pipped her at the post.

      • Barbara says:

do you not get the false comparison? Adams and Lawrence ARE NOT IN COMPETITION. It does not matter how well Lawrence does or if you think Adams is better, Adams needs to be better than Dench, Blanchet, Bullock, Thompson, Streep Adele E, Brie Larson, etc. It’s an extremely competitive year for lead actress.

    • Honey says:

Amy Adams was not snubbed in favour of JLaw. Amy was the lead actress in american hustle she was up against Streep, Thompson and Blanchett, not JLaw. Different categories.

    • INeedANap says:

Y’ALL. In my original post I even threw it out there that Adams’ snub was likely due to them being in different categories, therefore facing different competition. It’s right there.

The point of the post was to talk about the way the media perceives J.Law versus Amy Adams, and whether the current love of J.Law influenced voters.

      • Jess says:

You are pitting them against eachother when they are not in competition whats the point of that? Talk about wether Amy should have got the nom instead of say Sandy or Emma thompson. That makes more sense.

And the other problem is that most of us havent even seen the movie so we cant speak on those performance because the film just opened anyway.

      • MisJes says:

I agree with my fellow Jess here, and add that:

I doubt that the current public and media fixation with Jennifer Lawrence has influenced the nominations – after all, the public and the media are not the voting body – the Screen Actors Guild is. That’s so many from the film committee, and so many from the television committee. As peers of the nominee’s and industry members, I would think their decisions are based on more than which actresses are media darlings or a fan favourites.

The Lead Actress category was tight this year, and I think that Amy’s performance, whilst lauded by critics, just simply didn’t impress the voting body as much as those by the actresses who received a nomination. I don’t think Jennifer Lawrence, the media coverage of Jennifer Lawrence or the public’s affection for Jennifer Lawrence, in any shape or form, had the slightest influence on this situation.

      • Tatiana says:

Actually JLaw has received the most notices and praises in the reviews (I think even Slant magazine that has a tendency for not like anything praise her). So her nomination is not a surprise.

      • MisJes says:

+1, Tatiana. She really stole the show. Plus, she took out the Best Supporting Actress category at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards a few days ago, so she was definitely looking good for a SAG nomination!

      • LadySlippers says:

If the media affects the Oscars, why wouldn’t it affect any other award show? I’m not trying to shade any actor or actress (or any other artist up for an award) either.

However, I do feel media does play a part in the selection of winners. Even reviews are not immune and are influenced by the studios. Media hype does play it’s role in nefarious ways even if it’s only subconsciously….

      • T.C. says:

How would media hype about Jennifer Lawrence affect Amy Adams when they are not competing with each other. Did Idris Elba get snubbed because Lawrence was nominated? Ridiculous. Amy fans just have to face the truth Meryl, Cate, Sandra, Judi, Emma were thought to be better than her so she was snubbed. Lawrence wasn’t nominated for lead actress.

      • LadySlippers says:

My comment wasn’t specific to an actor or actress.

However, people are always influenced when they see a person/ name/ brand over and over in the media. It’s the vaunted ‘brand recognition’ and advertisers bank on this alone. Once something becomes familiar you tend to prefer it over an unknown. And this is seen quite often in awards. Sure there are always exceptions but people vote and people are still human. Thus name recognition is really half the battle.

Amy Adams isn’t in the news like many of her lead actress contenders are (I’ve stated that I’m not comparing Amy vs Jennifer). And Jennifer is seemingly everywhere and that helps her with name recognition in the supporting actress category. Oprah and Meryl also have this going (partly explains why Meryl is nominated for everything). In this case, Lupita will really face long odds because she’s not as well known whereas Jennifer and Oprah are well known (very well known in Oprah’s case).

  10. Megan says:

Michael B Jordan and Octavia Spencer got hosed!!! They totally deserve to be nominated over Hanks and Roberts.

I really hope Fruitvale doesn’t get snubbed because it truly was one of the best movies and performances I have ever seen.

  11. LadySlippers says:

    RE: TV nominations.

I saw “Behind the Candelabra” and the performances were good but the actual program was a huge snooze fest. SO boring. The story is what we’ve seen done in a million exposes before.

People were hoping “Parades End” would be recognized at the SAG’s and it should have been. The performances of the entire cast were outstanding (Anne-Marie Duff was delightfully good) and the mini-series was so much better written (I know that isn’t the focus in SAG) and the phenomenal acting should have been recognized.

To sum it up. I’m a bit disappointed. Okay, a lot disappointed.

  12. lucy2 says:

No huge surprises there, but I’m sad Michael B Jordan didn’t get a nod, I love that guy and he is SO talented.

The TV ones are a little bland. I’m all about Breaking Bad for the sweep, and I’d love to see Arrested Development or Veep beat Modern Family.

  13. Violeta says:

Gosh this not so diversified list… shock… not!
Rooting for Chiwetel, Lupita and Barkhad that is all… Whitaker is an honorable mention but I’m all about the new promising ones as well lately so…

  14. SportsGal says:

Jared Leto should win all the awards for “Dallas Buyers Club”.

    That is all.

    • emmie_a says:

I haven’t seen the movie yet but I remember when Matthew & Jared lost all the weight, commenters were saying they better get lots of awards for putting themselves through the misery of starving themselves for their roles.

      • kady says:

I thought Matthew gave a four star performance. Jared a 3, and Jennifer Garner a 2. I thought he was a little over the top with the flamboyance, and it didn’t seem natural enough.

  15. Scout says:

What happened with “Inside Llewelyn Davis”? I hear nothing but great things, but I feel like you had to start campaigning for this stuff six months ago. August:OSage County? Really? The ads make it look like one of those schlocky Hollywood tearjerkers.I guess it helps if your film is produced by Oscar whores like Clooney.

  16. Aly says:

I was hoping to see Oscar Isaac up there for Inside Llewelyn Davis. He was incredible in that, and such a great singer.

    • ctkat1 says:

Me too- I wonder if he’ll get an Oscar nom. He’ll surely get a Globe nom, since they split the Acting categories into “Drama” and “Comedy/Musical” which gives them 10 spots.

  17. Grant says:

I think that the Best Actress nominations are exactly as predicted. Judi Dench has been on the shortlist for the past few months and, actually, most predictions indicate that this is a race between Sandra and Cate (I think Cate’s got it). Meryl and ET’s reward was the nomination. The only potential wild card in that mix was Amy Adams but it appears that Emma Thompson edged her out (and JLaw’s critical reivews are overshadowing AA’s in the film) so I would be surprised if AA manages to break up “The Five” for an Oscar nom at all, although she’ll undoubtedly get a Globe nom.

  18. mk says:

    Jennifer Lawrence again, eh?

  19. manta says:

    No big surprise here.
Although I haven’t seen most of the movies nominated in the Tv movie/miniseries category, I’m excited to see some of my favorite actresses :Holly Hunter, Helen Mirren, Helena Bonham-Carter and Angela Bassett! (Go Angela)
Nice to see Don Cheadle was noticed too.

  20. Anon says:

Fingers crossed for any or all TYAS’ actors/actresses. Superb acting. Go Chiwetel!

  21. Side-Eye says:

The only ones I care about are the nominees from 12 years a slave.

  22. kiki says:

happy for Fassy and 12 years!

  23. bns says:

Ugh @ Meryl, Julia, Sandra and JenLaw.

And WTF @ no Michael B. Jordan.

    I hate Hollywood.

    • Barbara says:

YOU HAVEN’T SEEN ANY OF THE MOVIES WITH THOSE ACTRESSES, IF YOU DID YOU WOULD NOT BE GROANING. the only “ugh” on this list is OPRAH.

      • bns says:

LOL @ you thinking award season has anything to do with actual talent and nothing to do with politics/who’s friends with who. Most of the voters probably haven’t seen the movies, either.

Although, I do agree with you about Oprah.

    • TheCountess says:

Meryl’s nomination is neither a surprise nor a shock; they nominate her for mediocre films all the film. Julia is a surprise, she lost a lot of buzz between the tepid response to the movie and her snarking about Meryl around TIFF.

Can’t stand J-Law either, but “American Hustle” is clearly a player and that means she’s in.

There’s never been a doubt about Sandra, so I’m not sure what the angst there is over. She’s a solid Oscar front-runner.

  24. AG-UK says:

All I have to say is JARED LETO JARED LETO JARED LETO…:)

    • Julia says:

Oh, So 1,0000000… my husband (who is not gullible), honestly, thought Rayon was a woman until close to the end when she went to visit her father. I never really got Jared Leto until this movie– he is exquisite. (And, that is a compliment!)

  25. Honey says:

I feel like Michael B. Jordan lost out. Daniel Bruhl is a good actor but Michael B. Jordan performance was the arrival of major new talent.
Apart from that i am happy for Chiwetel mainly, as long as him and Cate Blanchett win the lead actors awards i be happy.

  26. TheCountess says:

One thing to remember, the SAG award voters include a huge number of television actors – so the exclusion of Redford in favor of Whitaker does not surprise me. I will be shocked if the more discerning Academy voters follow suit and leave Redford off the final five.

Also, referring to “All is Lost” as “that boat movie,” really? One of the most extraordinary films of the year is reduced to that throwaway description?

No one is surprised by Judi Dench’s nomination.

  27. Jess says:

Why are there a bunch of people crying for Amy Adams, thinking Jennifer Lawrence edged her out? Jennifer and Amy wasnt competing in the same categories. Hello??? Also Jennifer has been nominated in all the awards so far, so something is right about her performance wether people are tired of her or not is not the point.
I dont get why people feel sorry for Amy she is nominated almost every year i am sure she will survive a year of not being nominated. She is hardly an underrated actress, take someone like Ejiofor who for years was doing just as good work as Adams but never got a look in at the major awards.
As for the rest i feel Michael B. Jordan should have been nominated i do hope he gets a golden globe nom at least. And Idris Elba should possibly have been nominated.

    • Han says:

      This!

I am actually side eyeing the Oprah nomination. I just feel like every time Oprah acts people feel they have to nominate her because she is Oprah. Why not Octavia Spencer?

      • IrishGirl says:

Well, actually, that seems to be the sentiment amongst most around the net; that Oprah’s nomination robbed Octavia Spencer of a nomination. I must say, I agree…I mean, Octavia Spencer is an actual working ACTRESS! (LOL!) and her performance in FS warrants a nomination. Winfrey is not an actress, Spencer most certainly IS.

As for Jennifer Lawrence and her very deserving nomination, the consensus seems to be that considering that Lawrence has been receiving praise since day one, it was expected. A lot of people seem upset that Robert Redford was shut out. I think Redford will break into the Oscars, though.

      • Nik says:

Where have you all been? Switch Oprah with Jen “overrated” Lawrence. Oprah has been the front runner since The Butler came out. She and Lupita are the only locks at this point for nods. Spencer was great in FS but she hasn’t had that much buzz, not even close to Jordan and he didn’t get one either. Lawrence on the other hand just started getting buzz a few weeks ago for AH and still she got one, I guess she can just read the phone book and people will nominate her.

      • Marianne says:

        @Nik:

Whether or not you like Jennifer Lawrence, she is getting praised by critics and won the NY Critics Award already. While The Butler didn’t get the best reviews from Critics. And theres always a good chance that Oprah was a “frontrunner” only because she’s Oprah. She and Meryl Streep could probably film themselves on the toilet and it would get nominated.

    • Marianne says:

With Nelson Mandela dying, I think it might give Idris a push at the oscars. Or at least an overall push for the movie.

  28. Dulcinea says:

As an F1 life long fan, Daniel’s Nikki Laura is everything!

  29. AMD says:

This is will be a surprise year, and Leo will get his first Oscar because of the repeated mistakes the Academy has made in the past by overlooking him. The supporting actor will see Jonah Hiil for the oscars. JARED LETO is the frontrunner for best supporting actor because of his physical transformation of his character. Hills character is far better in terms of acting in WOWS. The Wolfs of Wall Street and American Hustle are going to change a lot of things when the Oscars come.

    • LOL says:

      + 1

      People have no idea.

      • charlotte says:

Well having seen both movies, I can say that Leto is one of the best male performances of the year. I didn’t care about Hill performance at all.

    • Pippa says:

Yeah lets give all the awards to young (ish) white men in a year of outstanding black movies and performances, not to mention wonderful veterans like Bruce Dern that sure waited a lot longer than precious Leo Decaprio. Makes a lot of sense. SMH

All I have to say is: the WOLF is coming for y’all 😉

  31. Virgilia Coriolanus says:

Question: The SAGs are only for actors? I just looked at the list on their official website (I was trying to see if 12YAS was nominated for best picture or something) and all it had were the actors. No producers or directors. Well, I’m gonna watch this year–they put them up on youtube.

One of my favorite moments last year, was when Justin Timberlake came out to present an award (he did some fake dancing to the award music) and Daniel Day Lewis had this ‘wtf is he doing here?’ look on his face. Love him.

    • LAK says:

yes. SAG is for actors only. voted for by actors. everything about them is the actors’ performance.

People are getting all twisted about it, but as you know, i don’t care for actors. i want best film at the Oscars/Indie Spirit/GG. That is the category i care for. And have to match my friends on.

And also since Lupita is from my part of the world, let’s say that i am biased on that alone and don’t care if it is un-PC to root for her on that point alone.

      • LadySlippers says:

Not un-PC to cheer for a hometown girl at all.

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

I cheered her on because we rarely see black women on this site to begin with–but then I saw her in the movie–all bets were off. I’ve never been affected by a film, as much as I have by 12YAS–and I’m someone who can watch Schindler’s List every day (rented it once from a school library and watched it every day for three weeks), and not be affected.

I was cringing every time Epps came onto screen, from the very beginning. I will be PISSED if 12YAS doesn’t sweep. I’ve never been so heartbroken by a film. Everyone was amazing–they should win every single kind of award that there is.

    • LadySlippers says:

Yes VG. SAG = Screen Actors’ Guild.

There are other guilds for writers and directors too so it not just actors that have it. Only within the last 5-7 years has the SAG awards gotten more notice by the mainstream public (the writers’ and directors’ guild awards still go by without much fanfare). Often the SAG awards notice the performances the ‘big awards’ often ignore which makes it a teensy more special. Plus, many actors and actresses love getting recognised by their peers.

    • ctkat1 says:

SAG is actors. In order to get your “SAG card” you have to deliver a certain number of words or lines in a production that employs union actors- I don’t know the exact rules, but they’re on the webpage. There are a HUGE number of people who are SAG members- film actors, tv actors, and actors who have bit parts in smaller productions or commercials.

For the SAG awards, the organization sends nominating ballots to 2000 randomly chosen members, who then nominate performances in each of the categories. While SAG typically trends close to Oscar nominations (among Academy (Oscar) voters, actors make up the largest branch), it’s not absolute. Last year, of the 20 acting Oscar nominations, 14 were also nominated for a SAG award. So there’s still room in each of the categories for other performances to get an Oscar nom.

  32. islandwalker says:

Very happy Barkhad Abdi’ was nominated. He brought intensity and evn empathy to a very difficult character. He was great in Capt. Phillips.

    • Pippa says:

Is captain phillips a remake? It sounds really similar to the danish movie about a western ship captured by somali pirates.

      • LAK says:

The danish film is victim to the trend for similar or same-ish project ideas being released at the same time. Personally i prefer the Danish film, but it’s every producer/distributor’s nightmare. Especially when the competition has a star name like Hanks.

  33. rep says:

Aly, that’s what it is About Lawrence, she does not look like a grownup. Also, Tom Hanks was.incredible in Captain Phillips.

  34. M79 says:

Absolutely stunned Adele Exarchopoulos of “Blue is the Warmest Color” did not get nominated in the Best Actress category. She even tied Cate Blanchett in “Blue Jasmine” at the FIlm Critics Award, was one of the only actors to ever win a Palm d’Or (this year), and gave not only the best performance of the year but of the past several years – and was only 18 at the time of shooting. It’s a shame when such a discovery of cinema gets locked out of the recognition she deserves, nonetheless in the face of these totally unsurprising and too-oft rewarded actors. Terrible!

    • charlotte says:

Well, it was expected. The SAG rarely goes for forgein actresses (see the omitions of Fernanda Montenegro, Emanuelle Riva, etc. in their respective years). Otherwise Adéle is having a good run this season and hopefully she is nominated at the oscars instead of the likes of Meryl Streep (whom I love but her Violet Weston was pretty awful even if the character is supposed to be over the top) and Judi Dench (Philomena was a fine movie but nothing special in the acting department). But this are the Oscars, where the quality of the performance is not as important as a good campaign.

  35. lovliest lib says:

    No Tatiany Maslany? 🙁

  36. Lila says:

The only ones I really thought were snubbed were Amy Adams and Leonardo DiCaprio. I support Forest Whitaker’s nomination because I do think Hollywood awards need a massive slap from the diversity stick but I really wasn’t that impressed with his performance in The Butler. I thought Oprah ran circles around him. The lead actress lineup is fine though I think Sandra Bullock’s performance was incredibly overrated. Cate Blanchett deserves to walk away with that win though so hopefully it won’t really matter. I can’t get too worked up about them though since Blanchett, Lupita, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Judi Dench were nominated. The Jennifer Lawrence and August: Osage County love is just extra.

The nominations that pissed me off were on the TV side. Rob Lowe for Killing Kennedy? Okay. I love Kerry Washington but her and Maggie Smith over Julianna Margulies and Robin Wright? They kill it every week with a lot deeper and more challenging material than has ever been on Scandal. Emmy Rossum wouldn’t have been bad either. At least Anna Gunn is in there. No The Good Wife anywhere? That show is hitting it out of the park this year and is miles better than Homeland has been since season one and Downton Abbey has ever been. Alec Baldwin over Louis CK? No Amy Poehler? Mayim Bialik’s inclusion is a plus but no Amy Poehler is awful. No Orange is the New Black or House of Cards anywhere? I don’t understand why Jeff Daniels is apparently the chosen one from The Newsroom. I actually like that show a lot but while he’s fine on it, Emily Mortimer is the better half of that show’s leads IMO.

  37. Nanou says:

Amy Adams is overrated. Yeah i said it.
And it’s been said by many critics that it was Jennifer Lawrence that was the standout of the movie, i’m not surprised by her nomination.

    • ctkat1 says:

Haven’t seen the movie yet (totally going as soon as it opens), but based on the critics, Jennifer Lawrence steals every scene she’s in and is fantastic. I like Amy Adams quite a bit (loved her in Junebug and Enchanted, thought she was pretty great in The Fighter), but apparently there are some issues with her performance. I read in one of the major publications (Hollywood Reporter, maybe? I can’t remember) that David O. Russell had her do a significant portion of her performance in a fake British accent (which she apparently does quite well, according to the critics), but then during the editing process he became unhappy with the decision and had her come back in to “re-dub” most of that dialogue in her Boston accent. While not a huge deal, I think that it does disadvantage her.

Any other year, Amy Adams would get a nom in Best Actress in most awards- however, the Best Actress category is STACKED this year. There are far more outstanding performances than the 5 spots, and she might get squeezed out.

  38. Julia says:

Saw Dallas Buyers Club over the weekend. Matthew McConaughey was astonishing– ever since he left Rom-Com/Kate-Hudson Conveyor Belt of Entertainment, he has so lived up to his potential. (Killer Joe… you will never look at a chicken the same way.) Jared Leto was so incredibly good– fragile, exquisite, and so exotic a creature you knew he wouldn’t survive. Fantastic!

While Dallas Buyers Club is great and both actors were brilliant nominees, Fruitvale Station got totally ripped. Michael B Jordan and Octavia Spencer could just carve you a new cardiac system… they were both fantastic. They certainly are contenders, even if they weren’t nominees.

  39. Evi says:

It will be interesting to see what the outcome will be now that Brad Pitt’s production company has jumped ship from Paramount. I cannot imagine Paramount will take it lying down.
In my mind, these awards are all about networking and nepotism rather than any genuine merit. Just like the Oscars. All about campaigning, bribing, and selling your soul to the highest bidder so a studio comes out on top.
From other articles I’ve been reading online, it seems that American Hustle is going to be making a lot of gains.

  40. Jay says:

tbh, I’m not thrilled with a cis man getting a nomination for playing a trans woman. Hollywood knows there are trans woman actresses, right?
