Did Beyonce pull off the music industry’s biggest stunt by just being disorganized?

bey3

As we discussed on Friday, Beyonce dropped her new album on iTunes late Thursday night with no advanced publicity, with no forewarning, with no hint whatsoever. Everybody, every media outlet, has been Crazy In Love with Beyonce ever since. If I’m being fair to her, I’m actually pretty relieved that we didn’t have to sit through months of promotional interviews in advance of the album because… well, Beyonce’s interviews are never that good. Plus, it’s good that she stuck it to Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and all of the stunt-queen ladies who will do anything to self-promote. In the end, Beyonce’s album is already selling like hot-cakes on iTunes. Here’s something I didn’t realize: you have to buy the whole album, you can’t download individual tracks. Huh.

In the wake of Beyonce’s ballsy album drop, many outlets are running glowing pieces on Beyonce’s ability to maintain secrecy, her reimagining of how the music industry should be, and how she was able to drop a full album with no forewarning. Here are some interesting highlights from a Billboard piece on those subjects:

When Beyonce’s fifth album arrived surreptitiously Friday morning at midnight, it was without the aid of an advanced single, marketing campaign, radio airplay or TV performances. But now that it’s out and setting iTunes ablaze with a weeklong, album-only exclusive, which of the album’s 14 tracks will get the single treatment?

Starting next week, it will be two – the Pharrell Williams-produced “Blow” at Top 40, and the Jay Z-assisted “Drunk In Love” at R&B/Hip Hop, according to multiple sources who confirmed plans to Billboard. “XO,” a rousing ballad penned by Ryan Tedder and The-Dream, will follow later in 2014 as the second single at Top 40. Not that the new album is about one song – even to radio programmers, many of whom started playing “Beyonce” in its entirety on Friday.

“Beyonce is bigger than a single. Beyonce has created a movement,” says Reggie Rouse, VP of urban programming at CBS Radio and program director at V-103 and WAOK in Atlanta. “We’re featuring every track this weekend on V103. We put up all 17 video clips on our website. Were doing a blog on Beyonce. She just kills it. She is the standard. Beyonce made every radio station, blog, TV station react to what she did. Jay by himself is great, Beyonce by herself is great. Together? There’s nothing like it.”

So how did Beyonce keep the project so secret? Lots of code names, for starters, and a shifting deadline that wasn’t finalized until a week ago. As Beyonce stated in a video announcing the album on her Facebook page, the plan all along was to release everything all at once – 14 songs and 17 videos – as a surprise. “I miss that immersive experience,” she says, of watching music videos like Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” as a family, as a mass event. “Now people only listen to a few seconds of a song on the iPods and they don’t really invest in the whole experience. It’s all about the single, and the hype. It’s so much that gets between the music and the art and the fans. I felt like, I don’t want anybody to get the message, when my record is coming out. I just want this to come out when it’s ready and from me to my fans.”

According to multiple executives involved with the project who spoke with Billboard under condition of anonymity, the album really started to take shape in its current form in late October, as Beyonce started narrowing down songs that fit the more minimalist approach. Previously previewed songs “Grown Woman” (featured in a Pepsi commercial) and “Standing On The Sun” (featured in an H&M spot) were soon removed from the track list, though “Grown Woman” is featured as a bonus video-only cut. Beyonce was still working on the vocals and production until the week of Thanksgiving, before producers started being notified of their final cuts.

Then late last week, final meetings were held with Columbia, Parkwood (Beyonce’s management company) and iTunes to finalize plans for the album, which was code-named “Lily” to avoid leaks. Another final meeting announcing the album to employees and producers was held at Columbia yesterday, Dec. 12. Only the most senior executives at iTunes, the album’s exclusive distributor until a planned physical release on Dec. 21, were clued in on the plans.

As for promo plans, Beyonce is in the midst of wrapping up the U.S. leg of her Mrs. Carter Tour, which plays Chicago tonight (Dec. 13) and comes to New York’s Barclays Center next Thursday (Dec. 19.) Though plans were still being finalized, a screening event featuring a theatrical presentation of the 14 videos was being prepared.

[From Billboard]

I’m sorry, I have to rant. “Lots of code names, for starters, and a shifting deadline that wasn’t finalized until a week ago.” Granted, I am far from a Bey-stan but I’m not a Bey-hater either. I don’t understand why everyone is like “Beyonce is such a goddess, BOW DOWN” when really it sounds like this album has been a disorganized mess from the very start. It sounds like Bey only got her sh-t together this fall (probably when she saw Lady Gaga and Katy Perry’s pissing contest) but please, let’s not pretend that Beyonce pulled this stuff together in three months. She has literally been working on this album for more than 18 months, and this album was originally supposed to come out MONTHS ago. She has literally thrown out dozens of tracks that she’s spent a fortune on, hiring and firing producers and tossing samples and figuring out who she wants to “homage”. The Mrs. Carter Tour was supposed to be in support of this album, remember? And I find it very interesting that she dropped the album on iTunes and we really have no idea when the actual CD (a tangible product) will be released, probably because this has been a messy rush job and everybody on Bey’s team is scrambling to set up some (what’s that?!) PROMOTIONAL events to support the album.

I’m just saying… it’s perfectly possible that Beyonce is a goddess who is redefining how pop stars release their work AND it’s possible she’s a disorganized mess who rushed this album release as some kind of massive stunt to shield herself from criticism. Both could be equally true.

Also – have you seen this “girl f—k your cupcakes” Instagram comment from a Bey-stan? It’s pretty much the best thing ever.

I’m gonna be honest and just say that I am LOVING this album. It’s been playing non-stop on my itunes/iPod. I’ve got to hand it to her and her team. Damn. I really haven’t liked a Beyonce album like this since B’Day so this was a pleasant surprise. 430,000 units on iTunes so far. Geez. I wonder how Katy/Gaga/Miley feel?

    • Paige says:

I’m not trying to discredit Beyonce in anyway but do people really believe she would have sold nearly 600k or more if her album was actually promoted. It doesn’t excuse their low sales but she didn’t have to worry about leaks and piracy because it didn’t get a chance to leak. Artists that have release dates albums leaks weeks in advance. Plus, you only have the option of purchasing the full album not just singles like most people do with artists nowadays. The album is great, but I only love a few songs. I’ll wait.

      • Dani2 says:

I hear you, but I guess we’ll never know huh? I don’t think it would have been as crazy successful but her fans have been waiting for a new album from her for a while so that’s part of the reason why the response has been so insane. And yeah, I commented further down in the thread that the whole “buy the whole album” is a marketing strategy but I can’t hate! I truly feel like it’s the one of the few good albums from a female mainstream artist this year.

      • An says:

According to Billboard the album has sold 618 000 copies in the US over the weekend.

    • Kim1 says:

Love it Love it Love it
Don’t care why it was released its out I love it

    • Kim1 says:

Update according to Apple 828,773 albums sold worldwide
      Bow Down

    • Tiffany :) says:

Woops, I was duplicating what Kim1 said. That is huge!

    • JojoAnn says:

I really loved 4 too. It was a very brave shift towards RnB pop when everyone was messing with Electro pop. I’m pretty sure the bulk of those haters hadnt even heard it. Hating this girl is all about bandwagons.

Speaking of which, why do they hate her so much? All I see is a hardworking, ambitious woman who seems to live clean and is remarkably low maintainance (remember her concert rider?). She never responds to even the most cruel gossip, she enjoys her body which is of a type constantly derided (often on racist grounds) and is loved within the industry even by supposedly rival acts. It is true she isnt articulate but neither is Brad Pitt! She does clearly try to improve herself on issues she cares about like say feminism. Yes, her skin is lighter but same applies to pretty much most black and latino artists. Its a sick society and she just happens to live in it.

I guess what I am saying is, I dont get the hate. This is the one chick we should be routing for.

      • mabooski says:

        thank you!

      • Jayna says:

I liked 4 and was glad to see her move to R&B. I did think she sang too hard sometimes. I know it was on purpose but sometimes it was wearing on the ears when I was trying to be chill listening, but there are some great songs on 4.

      • mabooski says:

        thank you!
re : interviews, beyonce has said herself that she doesnt like them due to the fact she doesnt feel the most comfortable hence the autonomy of life is but a dream (where she controlled EVERYTHING)

i feel like called her ‘disorganised is part of this need to discredit her accomplishment for some reason. like people are quick to use ALL the mental gymnastics in the world to defend banjowagon crispyssnacks ignorant comments on ‘female identity’ but question Bey’s feminist credentials.

Lena dunham can have her naked body all over her show, and its great but Bey shows some skin on GQ/at the superbowl/in her videos but she’s TERRIBLE. this all reminds me of the twitter convo #solidarityisforwhitewomen (look it up).

She is well within her rights to scrap material she doesnt like and start anew, that doesnt make her disorganised, it means she wasnt happy with the end result. Like, let her LIVE. katy perry and Gaga were never TRUE competition for Bey anyways like come ON.

      • stanhope says:

        Amen!!!! This is the truth.

      • Nan says:

        @JojoAnn, mabooski

I think this “a hardworking, ambitious” and I would add “obviously in control of every aspect” are exactly the reasons why some people need to lessen here. All those who wish for success are too forcibly reminded about the need to have both talent and willingness to work. Also, sorry, but anyone who puts “disorganised” and Beyonce into same sentence has not taken a single look on her life.

  2. Ana says:

But have you listened to it or seen the videos? Those are not the videos of a disorganized mess! I really feel like this is going to change the way the music industry works!

    • Dani2 says:

Lol there’s nothing messy about this at all, this was a very carefully planned career step for her. And it doesn’t negate the fact that it’s actually a good album by itself. I know that the fact that you can’t buy individual singles was a ploy to sell more of it but I actually can’t hate. I kinda love her right now. And the fact that she sampled Chimamanda’s call to feminism, I couldn’t not love this album.

      • Linda says:

I damn near lost my mind when I heard chimamanda’s voice on BOW DOWN. I love love love chimamanda so much that I am going to name my daughter after her( I am Nigerian by the way lol) . This album is crazy good.

      • Dani2 says:

@Linda I was introduced to her stuff earlier this year and she’s one of my favourite writers/people/women ever. And aww really? My dad is Nigerian *insert hug* 🙂 And yes girl, this album is so unexpectedly good, I haven’t quite gotten over it lol.

      • Linda says:

Dani did you enjoy the song Rocket? I love it, she gave me some D Angelo realness. Also her body in Drunk in love ! Oh my lawd!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • JALorden says:

Bowie just did this earlier this year, after being gone for ten years and he topped the UK charts and got two Grammy nods.

It’s been done. She’s not changing anything.

      • Leigh says:

Thank you! Let’s give credit where it’s due…

      • LadyAnne says:

thank you ! That’s what I was about to write.

      • Anna says:

Bowie said he was gonna release the album 2 months before it came out…….
I’m not trying to take away any credit from what he did, but you really can’t compare the production that went into both albums and music videos.. Not only that the attention/focus is more on Beyonce, so it’s harder to hide things..

      • WendyNerd says:

Actually, there was quite a bit of advanced promotion for ‘The Next Day’. I remember because I pre-ordered the album about a month before it was released and listened to songs from it on his website before the thing was finally sold on iTunes. And that wasn’t because of a leak. The official video for ‘The Stars Are Out Tonight’ came out on his vevo weeks before the album. He even had the whole record streaming for a while before anyone could own it officially. So yeah, that wasn’t really the same thing.

      • Tiffany :) says:

I love Bowie, but this is not the same thing at all.
He did do advanced promotion and released a video before the album came out.

Also…Beyonce engineered a big moment of hype (surprise release) and then released the music as ALBUM ONLY. That is a biiiiiiiiig new tactic right there. Society has bought music in a very single focused way recently, and Beyonce’s album sales IMO are the direct result of people not being able to buy only 3 of their favorites from the whole album. It is a 1, 2 punch.
        1. Surprise to build hype,
        2. only allow album sales.

If you compare quality of music, Bowie is in a class buy himself. If you are talking about marketing tactics, Beyonce just made some game changing moves.

      • ya says:

oops – didn’t see this and posted the same thing! Ya I guess Bowie released a surprise single rather than the entire album at once, but he still did basically no promotion other than videos.

The only difference with Beyonce is that the videos are coming after the full album release, whereas with Bowie, the single was the surprise.

      • Tiffany :) says:

Ya, I think Beyonce not allowing singles to be purchased before or during the first week of album sales is very unique. I don’t believe Bowie did that.

      • MonkSolo says:

Comparing Bowie to Beyonce is like comparing a French Restaurant to McDonalds

    • Tiffany :) says:

I agree, this was NOT the result of being disorganized. If it was sent for cds to be pressed, it would have leaked.

    • ya says:

She copied David Bowie’s strategy earlier this year, when he released his album completely out of the blue and shocked everybody.

You can only do this so many times before the novelty wears off!

ETA: sorry didn’t see the comment above before posting this.

    • Jayna says:

Of course not. You can’t film 17 music videos if this album was a disorganized mess. This was planned for quite a while to get those all of the videos planned and then shot, and the whole roll-out of this album was executed beautifully.

      • Penny says:

Hard to say really, she films so much, and not just behind the scenes type stuff either, she does full blown film and photo shoots that aren’t actually for anything in particular, just for her ‘archives’. Some of the music video’s were clearly made for the songs…some of them are the kind of thing she films all the time just because.

  3. MCraw says:

ANY WOMAN WHO ACTIVELY HATES BEYONCÉ WILL NEVER BE HAPPY.

This has been your Monday Memo.

    • Latisse says:

Why can’t you just give this woman credit where credit is due? I was wondering how this site would twist her success and the fact that she managed to sell 600k in 4 days! 4 DAYS! And it has been twisted to she is a disorganized mess? Girl, bye.

I know I will be one of the lone Beyonce defenders her and will probably be called a stan for the trouble so I’m gone. Let the haterade drinking commence.

    • MsDaisy says:

THIS. They will never be happy because she will never lower her standards and she will always be beautiful.

      • MCraw says:

I’m a marginal fan, honestly. Haven’t cared for her work since single ladies, which I think is the same for everyone who isn’t a Stan.

But to be perfectly honest, for a site full of bitches who love celebrity and gossip I can’t see how you don’t love what she did. For a site that nags that famous women aren’t feminist enough, I can’t see how you can’t love what she did. She shut down EVERYTHING doing what she does. As a woman, I respect that. As a gossip I love it- can you imagine how crazy other singers are right now?? On top of that, stellar, quality work. And that is all I need for a great day. If you’re mad after all that, nothing and no one will make you happy. Ever.

      • Chrisseh says:

or this is why you guys are stans bc her standards are stander compared to a lot more grater artist and you guys constantly insist on others to worship her and her popularity and you guys insist on saying crap like this^^^^, like im a hater for not wanting beyonce put in my mutha friggin face every God dang mutha freckin min!! Jesus!!!

    • Jessica says:

I don’t actively hate her, because I don’t give enough shits for that, but I don’t like her either. Different people have different tastes. It doesn’t mean someone else will never be happy if they don’t love what you love. Chill, and take off the caps lock.

      • MCraw says:

It’s actually a joke being all caps. But, like you said, you don’t *actively* dislike her. And that’s exactly what I meant. People who go out of their way to find fault, find something (anything!) wrong with this woman to dislike her will do so with everything and everyone else. Even if you don’t like her, her music or her non-personality, fine. But, as a gossip, if you still find no fun in the gossip she creates… When do you have fun? Not you exactly, but people in general. It’s not about “haters” either.

Just my two cents. Good day ladies!

    • John Wayne Lives says:

Her intense, all encompassing, in your face self loving phoniness in nauseatingly exhausting. She is the opposite of the kind of woman I’d want my daughters to be.

  4. MelissaMelissa says:

Here’s how she did it: By not doing it alone.

Like I said previously, she has finally found a team that can work magic for her. This is another leg of marketing and Public Relations strategy. Beyonce has been so terribly overexposed since she announced her pregnancy then the countless magazine covers, articles, and appearances after that.

So someone sat down with her (or sat her down) and crafted a strategy. I’m sure she had her input because after all it’s her voice, her talent, but it took many many people to pull this off. They won’t get the credit but I hope they get a huge paycheck because it’s paying off. It’s the best she has done in years, if not ever.

  5. AlmondJoy says:

Um.. disorganized??? If you watch the videos and listen to the way it’s arranged you’ll find that its far from disorganized. I know disliking Beyonce is the trend here at Celebitchy but her album is actually AWESOME. I haven’t liked her music this much since Crazy In Love. It’s gotten amazing reviews so far.

    • Dani2 says:

Right? I’m so close to stanning for this chick, it’s crazy. I couldn’t care less what the celebitchy thinks, for me, it’s one of the best albums of the year. Up there with Bruno Mars’ one.

      • V4Real says:

Whoa there calm down. I have heard the music and saw the videos. My brother’s girlfriend paid for it. It’s not all that. Maybe it’s better than some of the music she has put out recently but Bruno Mars quality, I don’t think so. . This album, and I understand that it’s just my opinion can’t come close to Emeli Sande’s Album “Version of Events. Now that’s good music.

As for Beyonce I will just wait until it is on Youtube and Pandora. She will not force me to buy her entire CD when I only like about 2 or 3 songs. Bow Down bitches is exactly what she is making people do.

      • Dani2 says:

@V4Real That’s your opinion, that’s cool. And I LOVE Emeli Sande, I’ve been listening to OVOE for close to two years now.

    • Maria says:

      Thank you!

I haven’t bought an album in years and just purchased hers: Drunk In Love, XO, Haunted, Partition, Flawless, and Blow are amazing in terms of production and sound.

I haven’t enjoyed Beyonce this much since Dangerously In Love and am THIS close to stanning for her.

She came into her own this album!

Her sales are off the charts and if this is people’s idea of a stunt then so be it, the music stands it’s own (something we haven’t seen much in female performers this year).

      /screw it
      //I’m stanning right now

      • Linda says:

I have Emeli Sande’s album and it’s a wonderful album but beyonce’s album is crazy good. What impressed me the most was the grown up sexiness in the songs and the video. I am tired of all these songs on the radio which seems to cater to teenagers. I am a GROWN WOMAN and I want grown up sexy lol.

      • Apsutter says:

Could not agree more Linda! I want some grown woman sexy, d*mn it!

    • Tnicky says:

Thank you! People love nit-picking every little thing Beyonce does for no reason at all. Frankly, I’m exhausted with it.

I’m not a stan by any means, but I’ve listened to the WHOLE album and it was in no way disorganized. It was a very cohesive piece of work to me at least.

    • Samtha says:

I can’t stand Beyonce as a person, but I don’t get the disorganized mess critique either. Hiring and firing producers and not releasing certain songs…neither of those things are that unusual. It sounds to me like she had a very good idea of what she wanted to do, and anything that didn’t fit her vision, she tossed aside.

    • Anna says:

      LOLLL I KNOW.
Wtf do you mean disorganized. This has been going on for a year and a half with no one saying a word about it. That seems super organized to me. The “bow down” track wasn’t released, it was leaked. As for standing on the sun and grown woman, those were released as part of the H&M campaign, so it’s not like she intended to release them as singles and they failed so she put them on an album.
Beyonce’s team said in a few weeks you’ll be able to buy individual songs.
The reason why people are saying “bow down” is because every song has a realllllly good video that can stand on its own and doesn’t seem like it was rushed and isn’t basic at all. AND it’s number one in hundreds of countries. She can also sing and dance her butt off live and still look good…..

It’s totally the trend here to hate Beyonce, Kanye, Kim etc.. It’s funny how opposite the comments here are to other sites.
People may try and come at me for “beyonce stanning” but this just seems like lazy journalism LOL (along with a few other missing details from other stories).

      • AlmondJoy says:

Thanks, I agree with all of you!!! My hubby went to school for music engineering and can’t STAND Beyonce lol… but even he admits that the album is one of the best in terms of production. He even downloaded it for me while I was at work. I was shocked lol… he said “You know I hate Beyonce but this thing is outstanding.”

  6. Marine says:

She is not the first one … Bowie did the same thing this spring .. But still it is refreshing

  7. Cherry says:

    1. ‘the plan all along was to release everything all at once’ (…) ‘I don’t want anybody to get the message, when my record is coming out. I just want this to come out when it’s ready and from me to my fans.”
Yeah, I think we can all agree that that’s total BS. First of all, we’ve already heard snippets of some of the songs (like ‘bow down’/flawless). Second, the Mrs. Carter Tour, which was supposed to be in support of this album, is already over (I think?). Third, I just don’t buy this story. It sounds like it was just made up afterwards to do damage control.
    2. But! What’s also true is that this whole stunt, well thought-through or not, totally paid off. The album’s selling like crazy. And you know why? I downloaded it yesterday and it sounds FANTASTIC. So there. Frankly, I don’t even care about stunts and publicity and tours- I’m just glad Beyonce finally made a great album. She’s such a talented lady, and we tend to forget that because of all the BS that’s surrounding her.

  8. queenfreddie says:

I like only 3 songs off her album. But the videos are pretty cool to be honest.

  9. Tapioca says:

Except the album *was* supposed to drop earlier in the year to fit the usual “successful lead single/heavy promo/release record” template – some of the other artists involved actually wondered aloud what had happened to it – but there was no successful lead single, so they came up with the “visual album” idea as the hook (‘cos Lord knows none of the songs has one).

As an example of industry turd-polishing it’s near-flawless, but I’m wondering if the label might just have spent a small amount of what would have been their promo budget on digital downloads…

    • Anna says:

She never released anything this year in an attempt to turn it into a “lead single”.. So I don’t really know what you’re talking about

  10. Violeta says:

I’m just cackling at this… well it’s a perfectly crafted team work that put that calculated PR stunt alright. Add to that Billboard is full of sh!t and corrupted, for a price they will give any album a decent review (and Rolling Stone travesty as well!), because one has to buy the whole album to listen to the songs that people will purchase out of curiosity, and once the surprise novelty wears off, the (non corrupted) critics will be more honest about it. Unless there are very few who know, Beyoncé’s label though her album was average at best and didn’t want to back it up big promo wise since there wasn’t any potential hit per se (she might be married to him but Jay-Z can’t do sh!t), hence why her PR/creative team came up with that strategy that has already been done before by other musicians btw.

    Double cackling at the sycophancy!

“So how did Beyonce keep the project so secret? Lots of code names, for starters, and a shifting deadline that wasn’t finalized until a week ago.”

Triple cackling! If little crap businesses can hire people to write glowing reviews and spam every conceivable forum to attract customers, I think multi-million dollar record companies can buy these files or at least have some intern sit in their underwear and download the album a thousand times. Just look at the iTunes reviews, they are by one word the same!

  11. bowers says:

I don’t think this woman wants anything “disorganized.”

  12. MissMoody says:

This album has been a disorganized mess. I’ve been following its progress through the urban blogs and apparently there was loads of behind the scenes panic because none of Beyonce’s “leaked” tracks were catching fire. With that said, she pulled a rabbit out of her behind. This surprise album stunt was the best possible move she could have made. And no option to download individual singles until the 20th? Genius. Not for those that have to pay $15.99 for it but for Team Beyonce, applause. Lady Gaga said something in a press release for ARTPOP about it bringing the pop music industry into a new age where the artist is finally in control of the icon or some gibberish like that. Beyonce may have actually accomplished that. How do you get people to purchase full albums is one of the music industry’s biggest riddles and Beyonce did, in a sense, solve it. Would it work with artists other than Beyonce? Maybe. Release singles for radio play but only make the album in its entirety available for purchase? For a limited time of course. I think it could work. Beyonce’s music isn’t iconic to me. It’s not the music that I find myself going back to like I do with Mariah Carey for example but as a brand, as a business, this was a great move.

    • Abby says:

This. I don’t think Beyoncé is the greatest artist/singer/talent (yes, she has all of these things-don’t jump on me haters, let’s just say from a pure music perspective there are plenty who do it better). But what her and her team really are are branding/marketing/pr talents. This is where they excel beyond almost everyone else. And they should get a ton of credit for that. That and her work ethic- it’s where they really shine.

  13. QQ says:

Eh! i think is a brilliant ploy and i say this as someone that watches her videos on Mute cause she is that pretty but her music is THAT stupid … And shit in my whole Beyss Christ history ive only illegally downloaded 2 songs and this album had 4 good ones on it, different sound and less idiotic lyrics and so on, so Frankly this is an all around triumph to get people to HAVE TO listen to and SEE the whole body of work, no picking and choosing or skipping

  14. Han says:

Beyonces new album sold almost 500k in one day. In comparison Katy Perry sold 280k in one week , Miley a little less and Gaga even less in the debut week of Art Pop. So disorganised or genius stunt this worked like a dream. She will be by far the biggest selling female artist of the year.
I like that you have to buy the whole album, probably won’t buy it, her music is not really my cup of tea, but its sort of a great sentiment.

    • Tiffany :) says:

Britney’s new album only sold 107,000 in its first week. People keep talking about Perry, Gaga, and Miley….but Britney’s numbers are shockingly low. She debuted at #4 and was the only new release in the top 5 (usually new music tops hold overs).

  15. Ladyray says:

Kaiser, please listen to it first before you say it’s disorganized. I am nowhere near a STAN. Actually I don’t care much for Beyonce but I actually enjoyed the album. Yes, it’s in your face sexuality, and at times very sensual. I would say this album, or at least three songs are very feminist. I know, Beyonce & feminist in the same sentence? Have I gone crazy?

But yes, if you listen to Partition (which is super sexual), towards the end there’s a woman speaking French saying, “Men think that feminists hate sex, but it’s an exciting and natural activity that women love.”

Flawless has this speech sampled from feminist writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie that goes along the lines ” “We teach girls that they cannot be sexual beings in the way that boys are.”

and grown woman too! Apart from the message, the african beat is dope on it and then I LOVE when her mothers looks at her.

So no, I felt like she thought about this album and what she wanted to say.

    • Ladyray says:

***Flawless has this speech sampled from feminist writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie that states” Because I am a female, I am expected to aspire to marriage.I am expected to make my choices always keeping in mind that marriage is the most important. Marriage can be… a source of joy and love and mutual support. But why do we teach girls to aspire to marriage and we don’t teach boys the same?”

This goes back to her bow down song where she says to people “don’t think i’m just his little wife…don’t forget it, bow down b*tches”

    • Anna says:

      YES.
Luckily everyone I’ve talked to and seen talking about this has noticed the feminist undertones to the whole album and all think it’s great. I love when she sampled Chimamanda’s speech.

I feel like I commented 30 times on this post, but I can’t stand when people criticize incorrect info. Like at least get it right before you wan an criticize something

    • idk says:

Wasn’t her song “grown woman” featured in her Pepsi commercial? Just wondering…

    • Tiffany :) says:

Ladyray, I am loving those quotes you are writing about! Thanks for sharing! 🙂

  16. paola says:

There was nothing messy or unorganized about the release of this album. She was in for a big risk though, if something worthy and important in the world news came up on the same day nobody would have paid attention to her. That’s why I think she was relieved that Mandela died mere days before ( not that she was happy that he died, but having your album out the same day of Mandela’s death would have been catastrophic for the album release). Plus releasing the album 10 days before Christmas out of the blue was a smart move. Many people are now rethinking their Christmas gifts, at least many of my friends are. I don’t like Beyoncè, but i like her more now, she was ruthless and brave to risk it like this and I’ll forever be grateful for sparing us of endless single promotions and publicity.

  17. Leigh says:

    BOWIE DID IT FIRST.
Not hating on Beyonce – I’m indifferent about her – but let’s all calm down and give credit where it’s due.

    • AlmondJoy says:

I had no clue that Bowie released a visual album. Ill have to search for it. On another note, David Bowie is in a lane all his own and has been in the industry for YEARS. Beyonce shouldn’t be compared to him.

    • Sam says:

What credit???? Was Bowie in the studio with her? If Bowie did it first she did it better!

  18. Irishserra says:

I don’t know much of anything about Beyonce and I just don’t ever listen to any of her music because… Well, I don’t know, it’s just not my taste. But is it possible that the lack of promotion resulted in lack of hype and expectation, which in turn lent itself to an album that could just be appreciated for what it is?

I ask this because I find personally that I enjoy movies and music much more when I just come across them, as opposed to being barraged with hype for months and then when I finally watch/listen, being overwhelmed by the mediocrity.

This is not a criticism of the woman in any form or fashion. Just something I’ve been mulling over in my mind about artists in general.

    • Diana says:

I completely agree with this comment. I think all the advanced hype can be more damaging to sales, sometimes. Because, often, I get sick with the constant stream of hysterical praise-hype of months and months in advance — see this! It’s the best ever! You’ll be amazed! By the time the actual product rolls out, I’m already bored/underwhelmed by it.

  19. Grant says:

I don’t even care about all the behind-the-scenes stuff. All I know is that she released the best album of her career. She can be nauseating more often than not but she put out a great product this time. It’s on a completely different level in comparison to her past releases. The music videos are even great! They’re what Gaga wishes she could produce.

  20. TheOriginalKitten says:

No comment about the album, haven’t heard it.

Just here to say that she looks amazing in the stage photos.

    • Linda says:

Plsssss kitten listen to it. Beyoncé grates on my nerves a lot but this album is fantastic. I love the cohesiveness with the videos. I also love the grown up sensuality in the songs and she killed me in Bow down as acclaimed NIGERIAN writer chimamanda Ngozi Adichie featured on the track.

  21. Lucy says:

It might have been a hot mess, but it worked for her. And the album is actually really good.

  22. LadyAnne says:

Hmm, hello ??? David Bowie’s The Next Day, anyone ?

  23. Singtress says:

No leaks about the release whatsoever doesn’t say “disorganization” to me.

In fact, it says the opposite. Tight control on every aspect (even if it did go overbudget time wise)

  24. Amy says:

The album was an exclusive to iTunes this weekend but retailers will have it this week. That was announced in the official press release. You can hate on Beyoncé for a shit ton of things but I don’t think being disorganized is one of them.

  25. ronnie1213 says:

Long time vistor, I’ve only commented a few times, but WHO CARES IF BOWIE DID IT FIRST. Bowie didn’t crash itunes due to the fan freak out, if we’re comparing. I am a huge beyonce fan and I don’t care if she was disorganized, maybe it was a blessing in disguise. The videos and album don’t feel disorganized and that’s what matters. Its an awesome listen, but it sounds like Kaiser hasn’t given it a chance before theorizing all this. She did something amazing and yes it was also her team but my goodness, why all the shade and nitpicking……

    • The Truth says:

And the reason why is that David did not WHORE himself out with a bunch of ass shaking nude videos

      • Dani2 says:

There’s nothing quite as funny as an uninformed nay-sayer, have you heard the album at all? Probably not. And LOL at you thinking that all you need to do is “whore” yourself out with ass-shaking videos to have the best sales for a female artist in this year. Miley DID that, she didn’t have this kind of commercial impact. Try another angle honey, this one flopped.

      • Anna says:

:/ I guess you didn’t listen to the songs “The Truth”…
@Ronnie1213 Bowie said he was gonna release an album 2 months before he did and its not like it’s similar to Beyonce’s so why the comparisons?

    • Ladyray says:

THANK YOU!! No one is saying Bowie didn’t do it first. What does that have to do with Beyonce’s album? She never claimed she’s the first to ever release a visual album.

The shade is so strong here.

      • Leigh says:

” No one is saying Bowie didn’t do it first”… No, but everyone seems to be giving Beyonce all this credit for “pioneering” something, when it just isn’t due to her. It seems that everyone is claiming it’s some sort of Bey-brain-child, when it’s not.

      • Linda says:

Excuse me while I go play beyonce’s rocket and make love to my husband.

    • queenfreddie says:

Bey has a long history of ripping off other artist and not giving them any credit for it. I don’t think that’s the case here though. Radiohead did the same thing as Bowie & Bey this year. But Bey sold the most and deserves credit for that. 600,00 copies sold in a few days is really great.

      • Tiffany :) says:

It isn’t a big deal, but what Beyonce, Bowie and Radiohead did is quite a bit different.

        1. Bowie released a new album after many years, but pre-released videos to Vevo and allowed pre-sales.
        2. Beyonce released an album without a release date, pre-release video or single, did not allow people to buy singles for at least a week after its release.
        3. Radiohead released an album and did not predetermine a price for it. They asked fans to pay for what they thought its value was.

The only thing they really have in common is that they shook up the traditional model in their own way, but they were able to do so because they had a pre-existing fan base an a substantial amount of fame to garner hype without the traditional methods. No new artist would be able to try any of these 3 tactics.

  26. The Truth says:

Bey Stans are so irritable , and tragic

Bey needs videos to sell her ‘art’ because her ‘ music’ sucks without the visuals, her biggest ‘hit’ single ladies is because of the video and that Bob Fosse routine

This ‘album’ is basically B Day Anthology Part 2

There is nothing artistic about this crap, Bey and her team had every intention of dropping this album on December the 14th

Huge sales or no Huge sales the album is mix bag of Rihanna B sides

    • Linda says:

I am a Rihanna fan but I must say that you are delusional. This album sounds nothing like what Rihanna would do. Sheesh

    • DeeG says:

Thank you for your type of commentary you’re the reason I went looking for her music. Your kind of “critique” made me run towards it. I wanted to know what the Bitter Bettys where on about.

    • Lynn says:

@ “the Truth” you sound like you don’t know what your talking about. Stop hating just to read your own words. This is in no way like Rihanna! Bahah
Beyoncé did a fantastic job with this “grown ass woman” sex charge album.
I love the whole visual package! Getting all the visual stuff with the songs really let’s you get caught up in what she is trying to present.
Hats off to B. Cause she brought her A game.

    • LQ Jones says:

Exactly, and I don’t care if she sampled famed feminist Chimichanga blah blah blah.

  27. Applapoom says:

I have not downloaded a contemporary album in years and I am not usually a B fan (I really liked Destiny’s Child from 15 years ago) but have to say this album is amazing. She is a consummate professional and doubt she is disorganized. I am still impressed by that video from a few months ago where a fan tried to grab her and she was very calm and graceful about it.

  28. ashley says:

Best album of her career!!! I saw all the videos, they’re amazing. Even if you don’t like her, give credit where it’s due. Disorganise is not in beyonce’s vocabulary.

  29. The Original Original says:

Werent they already crazy in love, now theyre drunk in love? Whatever

  30. Veronica says:

This is her best album. I’m in love with Partition and Superpower …

  31. Emmeline says:

I heard that her fanbase already knew about the album so it wasn’t a complete suprise.

    • Jayna says:

They knew there would be an album and that she scratched a lot of songs and started over. It was sounding like it would be the later part of 2014. So no one saw this coming. From the fans I’ve seen posting it was a total surprise that way. In fact, many thought it was a hoax. No single, no CDs pressed, so no leaks. On a freakin’ Friday, not the usual Tuesday, her album pops up for digital release only and 17 videos with it,, no single songs available for purchase until the 20th. This was a gamble and it paid off big. And it was genius. Once the physical CD drops, another rush of sales, especially for Christmas.

The last few albums I have listened to leaked, so then went to iTunes streaming for a week, and Gaga played what felt like half the album live a couple of times before the release. Many albums have two singles before it drops. This album was nothing. A digital release only initially is mind-boggling to me, and selling it initally as an album only was another great idea as was including all the videos with the album. But, boy, did it work.

  32. Veronika says:

I think this album and project is what her career had been building to for years. Like the thoughts that were on Sasha Fierce and 4 have been completed and polished to perfection. Ok back to listening to “Superpower” …

  33. mikeal says:

I am in no way a Beyonce fanatic, but I do like some of her songs, but I’ve have to admit that this album is solid, I wouldn’t go so far and call it ground breaking but I’ll say it’s a creative achievement for her,and that is why it selling, the buzz of the surprise release could have work against her if fans and critics thought it was bad.

The pop music industry today have become less about that album and more about the hit singles, therefore there is minimal creativity and no risk, so all that left is generic songs that will become a hit single but when you listen to the album as a whole it is bland. I think Beyonce with this album have manage to escape this trend, this wasn’t a safe album nor was it easy radio friendly pop. It’s not going to be to everyone’s taste, but I personally found it interesting and enjoyable.

  34. OhDear says:

Why so much Beyoncé hate? She may not be someone you think of as a BFF, but she’s a professional and has a hell of a work ethic. She made a well received album and did it without following the usual industry procedure. And it worked. There are far worse people to hate on.

  35. Penny says:

I’m liking the album, most of it anyway, but I could do without the sexual lyrics. It’s sexy right up until you realize she’s singing about Jay Z, and no one wants the image of Jay Z getting a blow-job in their mind.

It’s interesting that she’s not getting the usual heat for the explicit lyrics and some of the clothing she’s wearing in the clips (in Flawless she wears the same thong style demin cutoffs that Rhianna got called tacky and slutty for wearing). She really does seem to be immune to some forms of criticism. Not that I think she (or any other pop star for that matter) should be criticized for being sexual, but it’s just interesting to see how people react to it differently depending on who it’s coming from.

  36. Yeah, Right says:

I actually agree with Kaiser on this. She dropped buzz singles hoping they’d catch on – two of which didn’t make the album and another reworked to be on the album and spun as another fauxminist anthem. I think there was MAJOR publicity drummed up for her this year (wasted opportunities someone else could’ve had to be honest) and an album was apart of that. She’d been teasing the album for quite sometime, so the no publicity and out of thin air commentary needs to end. I do think the “album” was just pulled together this fall given we saw more and more “leaks” from the visuals of the album on this blog and others as well as entertainment shows. I think this was what her team thought of to save face; it’s worked temporarily being she’s sold more than her contemporaries and out did herself. But if we were to be real. Her selling 600,000 in the US alone and nearly 900,000 WW isn’t impressive given her supposed fan base. You’d think it’d have gone platinum overnight and further have tripled that worldwide. For some, it’s not thing to sneeze at, but when you call yourself the “Queen” or “King” you need to have numbers to back it up. She just had a well orchestrated stunt in which she utilized the press to her advantage (there was no mention of randomly finding the album of iTunes and Bil Werde BB editor, knew about it) as well as iTunes, similar to Lady Gaga’s Amazon deal.

    • Penny says:

      This.

I still don’t get the surprise factor. Beyonce’s been everywhere this year, and this album has been teased all through that. First her documentary was meant to line up with her album promo, then her tour. Just about every single writer and producer who worked on it has given an interview about it and it’s been brought up in every conversation about Gaga and Katy Perry and Miley’s albums. We all knew it was coming very soon. There were leaks earlier in the year. Her people have been dropping hints for months that it wouldn’t be the most mainstream Beyonce album and the leaks confirmed that. That and the fact that she went ahead with the tour rather than push it back to support this album kind of confirmed she wasn’t going to do an all out promo tour for it.

The visual album is a nice touch, but there’s only 2-3 great video’s in there. The rest are just standard, rote music video’s that wouldn’t rate a mention if they were released normally. There’s a couple that are rather budget by Beyonce standards. She deserves all the credit in the world for her PR, but while I like the album, I’m not getting the almost religious fervour it’s inspiring.

    • LQ Jones says:

      This X 2^^^^^^

    • Anna says:

she didn’t drop any buzz singles. those 3 songs were all for Pepsi and H&M. thats why they didn’t make the album. the only reason why grown woman had a video was because on tour everyone loved the choreography.

      • Yeah, Right says:

They could’ve been sold with Wheaties, that doesn’t negate the fact that she threw something out there and it didn’t catch on – they were buzz singles. Period. Further, Grown Woman I’m sure she released because she low key was promoting it on tour, in a commercial and a leaked (I’m certain by her camp) video clip. Let’s face, what she was selling wasn’t worth buying and this was a last minute move that panned out better than bad for her.

  37. Emily C. says:

I think she’s just a professional pop star who’s good at making money. I’m completely sick of all the “BOW DOWN TO BEYSUS” bull as well, but that doesn’t mean the opposite is true either. She’s just someone doing her job well. Maybe we’re not used to that any longer from pop musicians.

    • endoplasmic_ridiculum says:

I think she’s a great pop act. A really great pop act. She obvioulsy brings a lot of joy to a lot of people. I’m just not one of them. I just can’t connect with her music or her public persona.

The “bow down” and the “Sasha fierce” business was borderline farcical..

I remember when “Irreplaceable” came out, I just kept thinking “Is this ex-bf a hobo? If you can fit “everything you’ve got in a box to the left”, you’re a hobo”…

  38. glaugh says:

there is nothing disorganized about this album. maybe you should give it a listen before you make random speculations like that. it’s highly produced and polished. the videos are gorgeous too.

    • lariesa says:

i tried listen 5 times i was completely turned off thought i was her biggest fan i guess not cause this is not hot

  39. Suki2 says:

Pretty Hurts is the best one IMO fantastic video, great art direction.

  40. Ana says:

This review puts it all into context. “This album is awfully close to a masterpiece,” — and “seventeen Beyoncé videos? The sheer stupefying onslaught of sound and spectacle — of rhythm and melody and singing and hoofing and clothes and hairstyles and makeup and, it must be said, lingering close-ups of the singer’s booty — leaves you without much in your head, besides an overwhelming sense of Beyoncé’s indomitability. To paraphrase the poet: Imma let you finish, but Beyoncé just made seventeen of the best videos of all time.” http://www.vulture.com/2013/12/jody-rosen-on-beyonce-close-to-a-masterpiece.html

  41. lariesa says:

I think yall idol worshiping her how dare yall compare this album with bday have several seat that shit was a slap in face it was nt catchy none song I heard remind me of how vocally talented she really is she threw that shit out there to say she can put any thing out and sell garbage i like her but dont stand bye
this project she made me like jay z even more all his album are classic this shit was ass and she really was triping stop idol worshiping I was completely turned off would nt dare pay 16 dollars for that shit
