Jennifer Lawrence on fame: ‘Because I feel normal I expect to be treated normally’

Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence sat down with the Telegraph during her latest promotional rounds for American Hustle in New York last week. She had to skip the premiere because she had an early morning call for Mockingjay in Atlanta, but a fair amount of interviews were had including this one. JLaw already won a NY Film Critics award and snagged a Golden Globe nomination for her performance as Christian Bale’s wife, Rosalyn, so I suspect an Oscar nod is on the way too.

This interview isn’t hugely controversial like some other JLaw talks. She only mentions her body once! That’s a record, right? I am one of the people who likes it when Jennifer talks about body image, but I can see why some of you get tired of the topic. So here is some more of Jennifer trying to convince us how normal she really is and how being famous kinda sucks. She talks about the time she tried to go to Whole Foods right after Hunger Games hit theaters. Here are some excerpts:

She’s still a dork: “I’ve just met U2 and Bono out in the hallway and I’m still sweating.”

On her Rosalyn character: “Her actions are dreadful and crazy and dramatic and make no sense. Yes, she’s manipulative but it’s out of naivety because she’s young and doesn’t know any better. She doesn’t understand the gravity of what she is doing which I think makes her a more understandable and likeable character.”

She did little research for the role: “I don’t really think about work until I read the script for the first time and I don’t start the process until I show up on the set and start speaking. I work so much that if I thought about work when I wasn’t working, I don’t know what kind of a mess I would be in. I had all the knowledge I needed from just watching television and movies and I knew Rosalyn’s type. I got the script and called David O. Russell up and said, ‘I’m in, but let’s change her up a little bit. Let’s talk about some things.’ So we rewrote the dialogue and once things like the costume and the hair and the physicality come in, a lot of times the words follow. Much like real life: You walk differently in heels than in flats or you carry yourself differently when you’re in sweatpants or dressed up nicely. So a lot of it started from physical changes.”

What she’s wearing in the interview: “None of this is mine. I have to give it back. Make as much news of the jewellery as you can and then maybe I’ll get it for free. And the clothes? I looked at my options, tried this on and it was comfortable and covered up my stomach roll when I sat down. So I went with it.”

On sudden fame: “The day the first Hunger Games came out was a kind of bizarre day for me because I wasn’t famous 24 hours earlier and I got up to go about my day as usual and went to the grocery store. All of a sudden there were like 25 paparazzi following me and there was a three-car pile up. I was really terrified and I went home and locked myself in the house. I couldn’t really process anything. Then my doorbell rang and all of my friends were there with wine and vodka and the things I needed. They came in and we all just kind of watched TV and had a normal day, so that was nice.”

She’s not special: “Because I feel normal I expect to be treated normally and I’m trying to be being patient with the fact that that’s not exactly how everybody else feels. When I’m at the dentist getting my teeth cleaned people are standing looking through the door. And I’m like, ‘What would you do if someone was staring at you while you were getting your teeth cleaned?’ So it’s a work in progress. When I meet young fans I understand them because I was like that too, but it’s the real life day-to-day run-ins with people who sometimes don’t really know how to act that make me feel weird, and I don’t like it.”

On the near future: “2013 has been kind of a blur. There’s been a lot of good and some bad. It’s been a whirlwind and I think I will always remember being very tired but excited. In 2014 I’m looking forward to peace and rest. I’d like to slow down; I’d like a little less attention; I’d like to buy a house and have a home. So 2013 was a really exciting whirlwind and I’d like 2014 to be kind of an unwinding, peaceful time.”

[From The Telegraph]

Oh I feel for her on the part about getting her teeth cleaned. That’s really creepy! Famous people really should have an expectation of privacy during medical or dental procedures. They always get papped outside of medical buildings, but I think those types of pictures should be off limits. Getting gawked at during a teeth cleaning goes beyond acceptable behavior by fans. Really.

In related news, Amy Adams gave an interview (released by People and other outlets) her kissing scene with JLaw in American Hustle. Amy says, “She does a great job at it. She has very soft lips.” That seems like a typical way to sell a film – with the promise of a lesbian liplock. As if this movie couldn’t sell itself upon its many other merits. I’m not blaming Amy at all for this. She probably answered a a million questions, and that’s the quote the press grabbed for the headline. Sigh.

This is definitely one of her better interviews and I really want for her to build a life for herself outside of show business. I think that’s key to maintaining a balance and not letting it drive you crazy.
Slight OT though: I’m seeing American Hustle this Friday, anyone who’s seen it yet, what did you think?

    • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

Tell me if it’s any good–I love me some Christian Bale. And anyone who’s a fan of him–go on youtube and put in ‘Sam and Sarah Laurel Canyons’…*fans self*

I never thought a scene TALKING about sex could be so hot–especially the way they looked at each other. I watched it for about an hour last night…..

    • Green Girl says:

While I agree that taking a break from Hollywood would be great for her, I wonder how feasible it would be for her to truly get away because it seems like she’s always filming or promoting a film. With a schedule like that, I’m sure it can be difficult to find time just to get groceries, let alone volunteer for an organization or take up a hobby.

  2. MelissaMelissa says:

Bless her for being unpretentious, but I want her to go away for a while as much as she does.

  3. Lucy says:

Lovely, as always, I really hope she gets that rest. She deserves it.

  4. crazydaisy says:

what’s not to love about this gal? love her! may she always remain normal.

  5. bns says:

If she wins another Oscar this year I’m going to gouge my eyes out.

    • Tulip Garden says:

If you feel that strongly, maybe start with puncturing your ear drums ’cause then you won’t have to hear about her on all the entertainment shows or listen to her speech. This would also work better because you need those eyes for eye candy…and no one should be deprived of eye candy! Just a suggestion.

  6. carol says:

I know everyone thinks that jlaw is so beautiful and talented, but I think that its Amy Addams that is more beautiful.

    • Audrey says:

      They’re both beautiful and talented.

I loveeee Amy and Jennifer, it doesn’t need to be a contest.

I love that Amy was on charmed back in the day haha. And she was so great in sunshine cleaning

      • D. says:

Plus one million. I’m a fan of both, and both are wonderful, gorgeous in American Hustle.

      • kimmy says:

Amy was on an episode of Buffy too!! Love her!

Every time I see a preview of American Hustle, I can’t help but think how amazing Amy Adams’ performance appears to be. Hope I’m not wrong. Its a shame that the Best Actress race is SO stacked this year.

  7. Nymeria says:

Because I feel special, I expect to be treated specially.

  8. Audrey says:

I get what she means. I get really awkward when I’m treated differently at the bank after they pull up my account info. It’s weird, I’m still the same as when we struggled to keep $20 in there. We’re just in a better situation now. Stop offering me tea and coffee, I just need laundry $$.

I can’t imagine going through her level of change

  9. mark says:

    Poor girl 🙁

She complains about fame but i bet she’s selling herself for that oscar and dior campaign

    • Melissa says:

+1 so sick of this chick

    • angie says:

she has a right to express herself or is it forbidden because now , she is a star and she was not complaining, she just said she was still getting used to all the fame which is normal.IMO.
i mean some people should read the whole interview really * rolls eyes*

  10. Jules says:

Love this woman…I enjoyed reading this interview. Lawrence is fantastic in American Hustle (everyone really knocks it out of the park) but Jennifer Lawrence is a freaking huricane!.

  11. Anne says:

Especially liked the comment about talking up the jewelrey so maybe she could keep it!!
