Princess Charlene looks sad in Monte Carlo after Charlotte Casiraghi gives birth

FFN_Charlene_Princess_CHP_121813_51288809

Here are some photos of Princess Charlene and Prince Albert yesterday in Monte Carlo. They were in attendance at the Children’s Christmas ceremony. I have to say… I LOVE Charlene’s ensemble. She’s so Christmasy! I love that tartan skirt – it could have gone so wrong, but it’s exactly the right cut and the high waist ensures that she doesn’t look like a lumpy, poorly-wrapped Christmas present. The velvet bolero jacket works surprisingly well too. What’s up, Charlene? Coming into your own sartorially?

As you can see in some of these photos, Charlene did look sad at times during the event. She looked at the little children surrounding her and she thought of the darkness of the Insemination Chamber and The Baster Of Doom. Either that or she just has a natural sad-face. Like, some women (like me) have “natural bitchface” (also called “resting bitchface”). Charlene has Resting Sadface. Or perhaps she really is sad because she will have to return to The Insemination Chamber now that her niece-in-law has provided yet another male heir to the Grimaldi line.

Monaco has a new little royal. Charlotte Casiraghi has given birth to her own little prince, named Raphael, says the palace in the principality. Casiraghi, 27, and her boyfriend, actor-comedian Gad Elmaleh, 42, released a statement that Raphael was born in Monaco Tuesday. Sources tell PEOPLE the birth was around 9 p.m.

In a surprise “tickle,” as one source put it, the palace communiquéé added that “grandmothers are doing well.” The baby is the second great-grandson of the late Princess Grace and the second grandson of Princess Caroline – after Andrea Casiraghi’s son .

A Monaco palace source explains that the line about the grandmas was a “little joke from the parents.” In case anyone is wondering, mother and baby are doing well, too.

“Everyone is very happy here. It is good news,” the source tells PEOPLE.

It is the first child for equestrian and Gucci model Casiraghi and a second for Elmaleh, who is father to son Noé. The couple met via mutual friends two years ago.

Princess Caroline “gets my jokes,” Elmaleh told PEOPLE earlier this year.

Clearly thrilled about the impending birth, he added: “There’s lots of joy and excitement. I’m at a certain point in my life where building a family is very important.”

[From People]

Charlotte just had a boy with a man 15 years her senior, who is Jewish to boot. And they are engaged – it was something of a shotgun engagement, and I have no idea if Gad will convert to Catholicism for Charlotte, or whether she will convert to Judaism or whether they even care. I believe – and royal experts, please correct me if I’m wrong – that for the moment, little Raphael Elmaleh is not really an heir to the Grimaldi throne because he was not born “in wedlock” and because the father is not Catholic. It doesn’t really matter because Andrea Casiraghi and his now-wife Tatiana welcomed a son (Sacha) earlier this year too. Which means that, as it stands now, Andrea and his son are the first and second in the line of succession. Which means that Albert is going to make Charlene go back to the Insemination Chamber so that she’ll finally provide him with an heir. Thus, the Sadface.

    She reminds me of ScarJo.

  2. blue marie says:

I like the outfit as well, but she has a perma-sad face.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

She does. She never looks happy.

      • blue marie says:

I don’t follow these people all that well (only get info of them from here) but didn’t she have ample time to leave him before the marriage? I realize he confiscated her passport before the wedding, but couldn’t she have left before that?

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I find it hard to believe all the conspiracy, she was kidnapped and forced to marry him theories, but, like you, I’m just a casual follower and I don’t really know. I certainly hope it isn’t true.
I just noticed that Charlotte is making the sad face, too. Monaco must be depressing.

  3. Rhea says:

I would go with her having natural sad face as I’m one of those. Unless I’m smiling really wide on my photos, most people who don’t know me that well would think I’m sad because of something. And if I’m putting serious-non smiling-face they would say that I’m pissed off at something! Lol

    • Secret Squirrel says:

I have a resting “shut the f**k up” face. Everyone thinks I am permanently in a bad mood. The fact I am pretty much nearly always possibly just maybe in a bad mood is irrelevant!

I think Charlene is under a lot of pressure to produce a bub for Monaco, so I completely understand why she isn’t smiling with her whole face. A grimace for Grimaldi is more apt here…

    • Spooks says:

Well, me, the camera hates me. I’m lucky if my eyes are facing the same direction. In a good picture, I just look stoned out of my mind. In a bad picture, I look crazy. I don’t smoke, I don’t even drink. I look fairly normal. But the goddamned camera… I’ll take a sadface any day.

  4. Kittypants says:

There’s always such overwhelming sadness in her eyes. They scream, “Someone rescue me, please!” Mind you, I’d be the same if I was married to that pig.

    • RobN says:

Really, it isn’t the fifteenth century. If she didn’t want to marry him, she wouldn’t. It’s really that simple. She may not like the bargain she made, but she made it after years of dating and with her eyes wide open.

  5. Ice Maiden says:

She always looks sad. But I really don’t get what’s going on with Charlene. I find it very difficult to believe that she was forced into this marriage. While she may not love her husband, she probably loves the lifestyle. So I can’t say I feel sorry for her – sad face or no.

  6. Suze says:

Believe me when I say that I am not one who thinks babies solve everything in a marriage. Or anything for that matter. But having seen photos of Charlene with kids – she appears to be good with them – and knowing that she was expected to produce an heir, I have to say I really would be happy if she had a baby. I just think, in her case, it would help.

  7. LadyMTL says:

I have a very sleepy looking “resting face” so I can see how Charlene might not be as miserable as we think she is. That said, I doubt she’s over the moon happy, either.

Also, I want her outfit! That tartan skirt is amaaaaazing, where can I get it?

    • DreamyK says:

Right? That’s probably my favorite outfit I’ve seen her in. I’d like to see her go a little more Tilda.

  8. Sara says:

Ok, so all French people here may disagree with me, but Charlotte and the other Casiraghis are considered rather trashy, and Gad Elmaleh was seen as really downgrading with her. He’s a charming stand-up and good actor. Very random couple.

    • QQ says:

Haha No trust me my 90th year old gramma was talking MAD SHIT about the grimaldi royals and Carlota in particularly the other day!.. She actually sniffed: “Oh i know how the times are… What with Carlota being a baby mama..Don’t get into that arrangement QQ *slow blinkies*

      QQ: Mama, That’s Shade!

Mama: No no, they are trashy, they like that

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

Oh Lord—that reminds me of my own grandma. You can’t tell her NOTHING that you want to be kept a secret–because she tells the rest of the family the minute you hang up the phone. And most of our conversations start with my grandma saying this ‘Girl, let me tell you this…..’–my grandma is such a gossip 🙂

  9. Kaboom says:

The Grimaldi girls sure like their men older and from odd walks of life.

  10. Barrett says:

Wow not funny. What if she had fertility issues?

    • PHD gossip says:

people have been insisting for years that as a swimmer she did a lot of doping and cannot have kids. This was before they married. Perhaps there is truth to that.

      • LadySlippers says:

Ya know, you’d think if that was a concern they would have had fertility testing before walking down the aisle… Or am I being too logical here?

  11. inthekitchen says:

Just a note, the new baby can’t be the heir, because it’s born out of wedlock. If it CAN be the heir then Albert already has like 16 heirs, also born out of wedlock. So, I vote for resting sad-face, but not because there is another heir.

When is she going to have a baby though? Isn’t that why he married her in the first place?

…oops, nevermind. I read the end of the post…

    • Mrs.Krabapple says:

The baby can be eligible IF the parents subsequently marry. Since Albert married a woman who was not the mother of his illegitimate kids, then his kids can’t get the throne (unless he divorces or is widowed, and then marries the kid’s mom).

  12. truthful says:

I love her outfit too, but once again she looks sad as heck.

I remember when they first got married, we would think of ways she could flee on CB, LOL.
He is so gross, not even in the dark could I.

he looks like he wants to shake her into a smile.
he is horrid to me, not just his looks but his shanky hoe hopping.

  13. LAK says:

Point of correction, when female inheritance rights were given to the women in Ranier’s final act of renegotiating the deal with France and constitution, Caroline became the heir after Albert. It was a point of contention because it looked like Albert might never marry or have kids legitimately (he was still denying his issue publicly at that point).

I know we are used to the male line of succession as the norm, but this has been ratified in Monaco.

Should Albert fail to have kids, the order of succession is Caroline, Andrea, Sacha, *Charlotte, Pierre, Stephanie and her kids. In birth order as opposed to gender preference.

*is charlotte older than Pierre? I forget. (can’t be bothered to google)

New baby Rapheal is illegitimate for now thus putting him out of the line of succession. If his parents marry, he follows Charlotte in the line.

    • Mrs.Krabapple says:

I think Pierre (who is one year younger) is ahead of Charlotte. Although Monaco did away with the absolute requirement that the heir be a direct descendant of the reigning monarch, it still kept the *preference* for males over older females (which is how Albert got the throne ahead of older Caroline).

      • LadySlippers says:

Most inheritance laws don’t change past actions just future actions. So regardless, Albert stays ahead of Caroline.

And the Mongasque Princely Family isn’t my forte so I don’t know if males skip females or if it’s straight birth order. Sorry!

  14. mkyarwood says:

I really like her punk rock princess glam look there. I hope she finds a way to let that Georgie Porgie prince get her pregnant. She would be so much happier with a child to care for, given that she doesn’t seem to be allowed to do anything else.

  15. JenniferJustice says:

She may not have been physically forced to marry fat boy, but I do think she was highly pressured, guilted, and made to feel obligated not only by fat boy, but her own family, his family, pretty much everyone. She probably caved and now highly regrets her decision. It probably does feel like prison – somewhere you don’t want to be with someone you don’t want to be with, no real friends – just “yes” people and servants. No doubt she is very lonely and nothing but a lonely future lying ahead. I do feel sorry for her. If you’ve ever been cheated on by someone you really care about (and I think she did really love him in teh beginning before she found out about the affairs and the love child), it is bone-crushing. When you’re young, you compare yourself to his lovers trying to understand what the other woman has that you dont’ because you’re not old enough, experienced enough to realize that the problem lies with him and it’s simply a mentality that rarely changes. It’s who he is regardless of who he’s with. I bet she realizes now that he wasn’t worth her dispair let alone the rest of her life and her loyalty. What a shame!

    • Ice Maiden says:

I can understand why Charlene’s family might have pressured her into the marriage, but why would Albert have done the same? What is so special about her that he needed her as a wife? He may not be the most attractive guy – physically or in any other sense – but I’m sure there are any number of European models, actresses and minor royalty who would jump at the chance to live the high life in Monaco. Why Charlene?

      • klue says:

        Maybe she has a peen?

      • Lisa G says:

No one else would have him.

      • Decloo says:

        @klue: Guffaw! Thanks for that.

      • Alina says:

the gossips say Albert had Naomi Campbell, Gwyneth Paltrow, Brooke Shields, Claudia Schiffer and way more famous women

      • Sachi says:

I think because it’s Charlene can be easily “managed”.

Sure, Albert could have had an heiress, a supermodel or a celebrity. But why would he? All of those women would have come into the marriage with their own wealth, connections, power, and influence. If they didn’t want to deal with him anymore, they could just walk away. Albert is not very close to a lot of minor royalty. Not many of them, even the defunct royal/noble houses, will associate with the Monegasque royals anyway.

Charlene, on the other hand, spent more than a decade of her life as Albert’s girlfriend. She moved to Monaco more than a decade ago to be his girlfriend. Didn’t get a job, didn’t learn French, didn’t develop a profile whatsoever.

She’d have had nothing to fall back on had Albert not married her. She was willing to put up with a lot from Albert including illegitimate kids and womanizing.

Charlene is the perfect politician’s wife: wears pretty clothes, presentable and malleable (the many plastic surgeries to resemble Grace Kelly and look more regal + adopting a formal, somber style point to that transformation), and will turn a blind eye to her husband’s shenanigans and stand by him no matter what.

  16. tracking says:

I agree she always looks sad. Since her marriage anyway.

  17. Grant says:

How did she get herself into this mess to begin with? I’m so confused.

  18. m says:

Charlotte and Gad aren’t engaged. Gad shot that rumor down a while back.

  19. Thinker says:

Charlotte is really beautiful. To me she looks like a combination of Angelina Jolie and Grace Kelly… Now on a snarky note, like Angelina, Charlotte has those really strange prominent veins protruding from her arms.

  20. Maureen says:

I don’t know if she’s happy or sad. I can’t even take a guess. Why? Because this woman only has ONE facial expression. One. I can’t get a read on someone whose face seems stuck in one look. A sort of bland, un-readable look.

  21. natebati says:

Gad means bastard in croatian. For real. Also Gad is a name of local black snake. But it has biblical meanings too.

  22. Alina says:

Both were a couple 10 years or so prior marriage. All this runaway bride stuff is pure fiction.
Charlene is just a non-smiley person. As a swimfan i “knew” her before she met the Prince… she cannot smile. She tries but it looks bad, really bad and forced.

look at older pics. Even before she met Albert she was never natural with posing in front of a camera: http://www.hellomagazine.com/imagenes/royalty/201006243759/charlene/wittstock/style/0-8-966/charlene-1-a.jpg

She has an anti-smile-face and her plastic surgery (!) doesn´t help her now. Look what she´s done to her face…

    • LadySlippers says:

You’re 100% her work has not helped her (and boy has she had a TON of work too).

    • Sachi says:

So sad what she’s done to her face. Nowadays she can’t move it anymore. It’s too stretched and the cheeks are too big (fillers).

  23. Maureen says:

If Charlotte wants to marry Gad in a Catholic ceremony it’s perfectly fine that he’s Jewish. It’s called a “mixed marriage” (or “mixed nuptials” or something, I forget the exactly terminology!) and it is totally allowed. He does not have to convert.

  24. Caroline says:

Charlotte is so pretty… but an illegitimate child with a random man who’s so much older…

  25. sue says:

FIRST UK CITIZENS U R VERY JEALOUS OF CHARLENE, WHY DO U ALWAYS WRITE HORRIBLE THINGS ABOUT CHARLENE, SHE IS NOT SAD, SHE IS DIGNIFIED, MAYBE THEY AGREED NOT TO HAVE KIDS, CHARLENE IS BEAUTIFUL, HARDWORKING, ELEGANT….:..NOW WHY DID PRINCE WILLIAM MARRY THAT UGLY LAZY, EXHOBITIONIST…WAITY , WASTE OF SPACE, WOW SHE IS FLOP!! She has secured her meal ticket with prince george PATHETIC!!!!!

  26. ann says:

prince william cheated on kate several times, so he is no better than albert, what about diana geez how many boyfriends did she have, there are rumours prince harry is not charles song, so give charlene and albert a break!!!!!

  27. ann says:

prince william cheated on kate several times, so he is no better than albert, what about diana geez how many boyfriends did she have, there are rumours prince harry is not charles son, so give charlene and albert a break!!!!!

  28. Jazzy says:

It’s always been said that the Prince was gay, so that’s why he was unmarried for that long. He had supermodels to go with him to events and things like that, but it has always been his sister Caroline (Carlota’s mother) the one doing First Lady-Princess duties.
Then Charlene came up and apparently there was some kind of deal between them to shut up rumors (what everyone knew back then)
I don’t think they will ever have kids, and that might be one of the reasons why Charlene looks sad all the time. I remember when Prince Rainier was alive, they were talking about skipping Prince Albert and get Andrea to be the next Prince of Monaco (and he was like 10-12 years old)
