Phil Robertson advises men to only date, marry 15 year old girls who carry Bibles

phil1

Two pieces of Duck Dynasty news have come out in the past few days. I kind of hoped that I could just avoid writing about Duck Dynasty for a while now that A&E decided to bend over for bigot-money, but as it turns out, Phil Robertson’s GQ interview was only the tip of the iceberg. Now that Phil and his clan are more widely known, several media outlets have been digging into past statements made by all of the Robertson men. One of the most notable (“most notable” = shadiest, grossest) is this video from 2009 which has been getting a lot of play this week. In the video, Phil is “preaching” his particular brand of gospel, and he’s advising the menfolk to only date and marry 15 and 16 year old girls. In Phil’s opinion, once a girl gets past 17, she’s worthless because she only cares about money and she won’t “pick your ducks.” Seriously.

Here’s the transcript from the relevant portion:

“I’m going to give you some river rat counseling. Make sure that she can cook a meal. You need to eat some meals that she cooks, check that out. Make sure she carries her Bible. That’ll save you a lot of trouble down the road. And if she picks your ducks, now that’s a woman. They got to where they getting hard to find, mainly because these boys are waiting till they get to be about 20 years old before they marry them. Look, you wait till they get to be 20 years old the only picking that’s going to take place is your pocket. You got to marry these girls when they are about 15 or 16. They’ll pick your ducks. You need to check with mom and dad about that, of course.”

YIKES. Personally… well, I think even 20 years old is too young for most women to marry. And in most states, 15 and 16 year olds aren’t even legally allowed to marry (much less consent to a romantic/sexual with some creepy old duck hunter). You know what’s weird though? Someone who watches the show told me that Phil’s sons married college-educated women in their 20s. So the gospel of Phil Robertson isn’t followed too closely by his heirs. Something to think about.

Speaking of the heirs, Phil’s son Willie made an appearance on Fox News’ “All-American New Year’s Special” (as opposed to The Partially American New Year’s Special on MSNBC?). Willie was asked about the controversy with A&E and his dad, and Willie said, “We’re just glad to be back to work, and A&E and us are fine… We’re looking forward to getting back to making some funny shows. It’s a New Year so we’re ready to break in a New Year and start it all over again. We’re ready to move on, you know. I think we all learned a lot and we’re just ready to move on, and the family’s happy, and we’re ready to go. I’ve got to make sure my guys are back there building duck calls.” Here’s the video:

I think I may throw up.

    • Rose says:

Are we sure Warren Jeffs isn’t under that beard?

    • Bubbles says:

I just googled him. He has a master’s degree?!

      • Algernon says:

My brother’s new girlfriend has a master’s degree (as she kept telling us, loudly, over the holidays). Masters degrees have lost a lot of their mystique in recent days.

      • JLG says:

LOL at Algernon’s comment! That shade gave me LIFE!

      • Marie says:

Well, they’re fake. I dunno when Phil went bearded and dirty, but the kids only did it for the show. They were normal yuppie Southerners. So yeah, they have degrees and are playing a lot of people for fools.

      • Isabelle says:

One of my top pet peeves are people that brag about their degrees, education, etc..Everybody and their mother has a Masters degree these days, its not unique. Don’t think it’s an indicator of intelligence it is proof of an education. Unfortunately, education doesn’t lead to intelligence, just a little more knowledge.

      • Bluebear says:

First, I know a lot of idiots with college degrees and I know a lot of really intelligent people without them. Degree’s mean little outside of furthering a career. Also, let’s remember that C’s get degrees; so your doctor could have graduated last in his class and still be YOUR doctor. Scary thought, right?

Second, and I hesitate saying this, he is so very clearly joking. A bad joke that is in extremely poor taste? Yes. But a joke nonetheless. People make some pretty poor jokes: dead baby jokes (who are those ass clowns?); rape jokes; racist jokes. I don’t associate with those people, and I wouldn’t associate with this moron either, but let’s not get too twisted up over this and keep the focus on the racist bigot part.

I, personally, am far more offended that he claimed black people were happier pre-civil rights era than I am that he made a (ridiculously stupid and off color) comment that you should “marry ’em young and raise yourself up a good duck pluckin’ woman”. I don’t think he actually believes that; but he does believe that homosexuals will go to hell and blacks were happier à la Jim Crow.

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

Agree so much with your thoughts about college degrees not being a gauge of intelligence, bluebear.
I also agree with what you are personally more offended by-I’m in the same boat.

But I disagree that he was joking…but at the same time he was married in 1966, when it probably wasn’t that unusual in that area of the country to marry young.

Now I hate that I’m defending this jerk…sigh. Just trying to be honest and fair.

    • elo says:

A college education does not necessarily a smart man make. There are many good, smart people who never went and lots of idiots marching around with degrees.

      • gg says:

Yep. I hope he keeps on talking because with every syllable he gets outed as being stupider and people will just ignore him.

      • Decloo says:

@gg: Unfortunately, I don’t think his comments will be ignored but instead will be a rallying cry for the scary amount of Americans who are like-minded. There are people who share this man’s opinions and when people such as this duck guy are given a platform, become famous and become rich, it begins to validate those opinions. I’m all for free speech but when the media lavishes attention on these backward idiots (and not just DD, I’m talking things like “Teen Mom” too) then their actions and beliefs are given credence. The so-called “liberal media” is thinking of the bottom line and not what kind of credo they are promoting.

      • Spooks says:

Are there really Americans who think this way? I mean, even the hardcore right-wing ultra Catholics don’t think like that here.

      • Holly says:

One of the dumbest people I know has a master’s. She isn’t able to point out the continent of Africa on a map and completely butchers the English language on a regular basis. Sadly, she teaches ENGLISH.

  2. Kim1 says:

    Is”pick your ducks” a euphenism?

    • aang says:

I think he might literally mean pluck the feathers off a dead duck, which is less gross than anything else it could mean.

    • OriginallyBlue says:

No. Apparently after you kill the ducks you have to process them which includes picking the feathers off them.

    • Kayla says:

I think he saying men need to find a girl willing to get her hands dirty

      • Gypsy says:

If you have a 15 year old daughter or sister, or niece you think it’s okay for a 30/40/50 to tell you he wants to marry her.
The Taliban believes 10/11/12/13 year old girls needs to be already married and with baby, so I supposed him saying 15 is fine by some people…just not me.

  3. Tiffany27 says:

WTF is an “All-American” New Years? Fox News is such a mess.

  4. Kiddo says:

A grizzled pork rind uttered something archaic and another grizzled pork rind said something on Faux News, validating the demographic to itself. And the modern world ignores A&E, while it rotates.

  5. UghInsomnia says:

He was 18 and Kay was 14 when they started dating. They got married when he was 20 and she was 16.

  6. Jessica says:

What the hell does “pick your ducks” mean?

    • Tapioca says:

Literally pick the feathers off ducks! It’s messy work and takes forever to do it right without breaking the skin.

I particularly love the “all women are gold diggers” shade in his comment – if you’re married off and impregnated in some backwoods Deliverance nightmare before you have a chance to establish a career, what else can you do but live off your husband?!

  7. Kisty says:

Backwater Hick for sure! However, it didn’t sound like he was saying older men marry 15 year olds. It sounded like he was sayings teens to marry teens. Not to wait. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but what happened to not judging others for no one is without sin.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

I think that’s what he meant as well. I read he was 18 when he married his wife, who was 16 at the time.

      • daisyfly says:

He was eighteen when they started dating. He was twenty when they got married because she was pregnant at sixteen. He spent half their marriage drinking and beating her, and since she had no real education and those babies, she had really no place else to go. He’s advocating that same helplessness for other girls.

      • Brittney says:

YES, daisyfly! He really is. Just like most white men who are bigoted toward the gay community, he also wants to keep women down. Anything that threatens his superiority and prevents him from dominating others is a “sin”. He makes me so sick.

    • MaiGirl says:

Sure, but that doesn’t in any way reduce the misogyny of what he is saying. Better get with them young and trainable (Better cook well! Better pick ducks! ((whatever the eff that means!)) before they turn into gold-digging wenches at the stroke of their 20th birthdays! It’s difficult to avoid judging such judgmental statements.

    • Mia4S says:

“but what happened to not judging others for no one is without sin.”

What happened to it? People misinterpreted it and turned it into a lazy excuse. Judge not less ye be judged. So I shouldn’t judge the monster who kidnapped three women and raped and tortured them for years? Please. It means before I judge I need to be ready to be judged myself and stand up in comparison. I’ll happily put myself in for comparison against this idiot.

So he has issues with gays, blacks, women…I assume Jews and Hispanics are next? 😉

      • Mich says:

        Preach it, Mia4S! 🙂

      • Hakura says:

@Mia4S – I may not be able to stay awake (or stand) listening to my grandfather (an old-school pastor from down-home Alabama) preaching a prodestant sermon on Sunday morning, but I’m with Mich, Preach it, girl!

(I don’t ‘fit’ into the rules of my family’s religious beliefs, not that I have a problem with the basics or don’t believe in God. I just disagree with too much outside of that, especially the deep-South old-school misogyny so much of their ‘rules/sins’ are known for.)

      • I Choose Me says:

        *Bangs tambourine and shouts Amen!*

      • Lauraq says:

I’ve always taken the ‘don’t judge’ thing to mean you can disagree with and condemn someone’s behavior, but only God can say ‘This person is going to hell.’ Which really is a problem for the ‘gays burn in hell’ people, isn’t it?
That, and the Bible says you’ll be judged by the same measures you use to judge others. Which I took to mean that if you’re harsh with others, you will be judged harshly, but if you’re understanding, you will be given understanding…and I think that’s a direct judgement on hypocrisy, not a rule saying you can’t condemn someone who rapes and murders.

    • Red32 says:

Is there any bigger sin than victimizing the weak? That’s basically what he is preaching – trap, I mean, marry a girl while she is still a child so she will follow your will rather than developing her own. That way she’ll be too busy picking ducks to get any education or means of supporting herself (translation – she can’t leave or it will at least be very difficult to leave).

  8. doofus says:

it’s all about controlling the womenfolk with this neanderthal, ain’t it?

  9. Lydia says:

This hillbilly realness right here. Ew. Go the eff away already.

    • Mich says:

Sadly, it isn’t just southern rednecks who think like this. I’m from the South but have family in PA. During one visit, the patriarch of the PA clan informed my aunt that women shouldn’t work outside the home except as teachers. And that they shouldn’t be teaching boys over the age of 14. My aunt was a member of the White House press corps representing one of the biggest news names on the planet.

    • Florc says:

Mich is right. This isn’t just a hillbilly or redneck mentality. It’s just the way some people think regardless of religion, education, and finances.

  10. Aussie girl says:

So Phil advises men only to date & marry 15 year old girls carrying bibles. Shoot, then count me out.

    • Lucy2 says:

I know, right? Damn, I’m too old for that prized catch! Plus I also think for myself and have an education and career, so I guess 3 strikes and I’m out. Well, darn.

    • I’m an old maid now….

      • Hakura says:

At 27, I’m right there with ya. *Pulls out her little clam-shaped purse full of odds & ends, a shower cap, cat treats, & a powder compact 3 shades darker than her skin tone* It’s alright dear, it’s bingo night at the church! Gladys has her good-luck troll ready tonight!

(F-that shit, let’s go have some tequila… I’m sure we can mend our broken, educated, self-confident, disappointed hearts by slumming it with some men who look like they shower more than once every 2 weeks).

  11. tifzlan says:

Kay, getting reaaaaaal tired of hearing about this prick. It doesn’t surprise me that he’s a misogynistic asshole too, in addition to being a racist asshole and homophobic asshole.

    • Hakura says:

It’s the a-hole holy trinity! (& here I thought Kanye had cornered the market, how wrong I was!) An accomplishment worthy of national news coverage, to be sure.

  12. jwoolman says:

Good ol’ Phil has been saying obnoxious stuff about women, gays, blacks, etc. for years. The stuff in the GQ interview was his standard patter when he goes out to preach to groups. The next generation may rally behind him because he’s their dad and they love him, but they don’t seem to talk like him. Behind closed doors, they’re probably wondering how to keep dear old dad from wrecking the business….

I wonder how many people supporting him because they think the show is full of family values and they can watch with their kids actually read the interview. Good ol’ Phil wasn’t very family friendly in it. He’s likely to go too far too publicly too often one of these days and the enthusiasm will wane.

I still wonder about his obsession with bestiality. What is he really doing with those poor ducks?

  13. Kcaia says:

He is so going to be a gay, black woman in his next life.

  14. Talie says:

Did everyone see the photos circulating around of what these phonies looked like before their show? All the sons looked like they belonged in a boy band circa 1999.

  15. Christin says:

He’s made a few shady comments about the sons’ wives, so it’s clear they don’t fit his ideal of the cook and duck feather pluckin’ woman.

    • Axis2ClusterB says:

Willie’s wife, in particular. She has also shown no hesitation in popping off back at him. They very obviously dislike one another.

      • Sachi says:

I think all the sons’ wives are like that. Phil calls them yuppies all the time and he says it with obvious disdain. The second son, Jase, has an outspoken wife. She’s not afraid to call the men out on the show. Phil doesn’t have any specific scene with her at all, unlike with his other DILs and she doesn’t have an episode that centres around her. She’s just a bit player and rarely interacts with anyone but her husband and Korie.

      • Hakura says:

@Axis2ClusterB – Good for her! I know I sure wouldn’t (nor have any inclination to) hold back in those situations.

  16. Merritt says:

Sick, just sick. This man is a bigot. And now he is advocating child marriage.

  17. Florc says:

Now that people are digging they’re sure to turn up more. Will A&E still stick around? This seems like the beginning of he end. The money will dwindle and A&E will shut them out.

  18. QQ says:

Oh i wonder where the “oh but he has the right to blah blah blah first amendment” crowd championing for this guy and allowing A&E to give a platform for this batshittery.

Im sure gay bashing and jim crow fond memories are cool but maybe not so hot on this unwashed looking moron and his ilk coming for their teenage daughters

    • Pandy says:

Well, I’m to too sure about that ending the show (coming for the teenaged daughters I mean). Sister Wives is still on the air, isn’t it? Didn’t that ass just win a court case in Utah that allows cohabitation between multiple “spouses”, although it still allows the bigamy laws to stand.

      • Hakura says:

@Pandy – “Didn’t that ass just win a court case in Utah that allows cohabitation between multiple ‘spouses’, although it still allows the bigamy laws to stand.”

This is the first I’m hearing about this, which ass? (You mean the Sister Wives’ ass?)… & how does *that* work? Are you saying… Multiple ‘spouses’ can live together legally… But *having* multiple spouses is still illegal? HTF does that make sense? (Or am I totally confused? o.O)

    • Lauraq says:

I’ve said since this thing first happened: He has the right to say whatever his opinions are. Others have the right to criticize him for said opinions. And A&E has the right to keep him or fire him as they choose.
I don’t agree with what he’s saying at all, but I did notice some of the people originally trumpeting A&E’s right to fire him have gotten pouty since A&E exercised their right to keep him on.

  19. Dani says:

What?? Is he fully there? Like, are we sure he doesn’t have brain damage of some sort? WTF is wrong with him. Teens marrying teens is just as bad as a teen marrying an adults. Teens shouldn’t be getting married!!

  20. lenje says:

This is so disgusting. NOT Biblical at all.

  21. klue says:

Does he have daughters? I pity them if he does. And his poor wife?!

  22. Kate says:

Now we know they’re just punking us. These guys are scripted.

  23. teehee says:

Ok. NOW I’m offended. I wasn’t before cos I wasn’t surprised, but, this borders on “brainwash a young child into being your servant” kind of treachery…. GAG
A young person doesn;t need to be swayed into plucking your ducks for you. A grown woman can decide if that’s what she wants for herself- IF that’s what she wants. It speaks a lot about a man who has to resort to a defenseless, immature ‘thing’ to have a wife!!

    • Leila in wunderland says:

Yep. Look at his good old-fashioned values. Being gay is wrong, but a sexual relationships with 14 and 15-year olds are ok,

The people who were all, ‘he’s just a harmless, respectful old man exercising his first amendment right, leave him alone you meanies,” are going to have a hard time supporting him now. He’s a homophobe, he’s prejudice towards black people and people who aren’t Christians, he promotes sex with high school sophomores, and he’s a misogynist who believes that women should be submissive.

  24. Tiffany says:

The man hooked up with his wife when she was 14. We know that they did not wait until marriage to engage in sex. I have met guys like him, they go for the youngest person they can get to make up for their own shortcomings. You think if Kay was like the other wives (more than a high school education, opinionated) they would still be together.

  25. Leila in wunderland says:

Are the ‘free speech’ people going to defend him now? Since they support this person’s ‘right’ to express homophobia, racism, and basically say that people who aren’t Christians are inferior and bad, without the public responding negatively, do these same people also support his ‘right’ to basically promote pedophilia without the public responding negatively? Sarah Palin, where are you now?

    • Nance says:

Haha! This is EXATCLY what I’ve said, I CAN’T wait for this to happen!

    • Hakura says:

@Leila – “…without the public responding negatively, do these same people also support his ‘right’ to basically promote pedophilia without the public responding negatively?”

In this case, I *think* the more specific term is ‘Ephebophilia’ (Wiki: “Ephebophilia is the primary or exclusive adult sexual interest in mid-to-late adolescents, generally ages 15 to 19.”), but I totally agree with your statement. =) (I’m *totally* not trying to be one of those annoying people who corrects others, though! I just remembered because someone actually corrected me when I said the same thing earlier today xD)

  26. megsie says:

If Robertson dies tomorrow in a fiery car wreck, will we forgive him as we did Paul Walker?

    • Leila in wunderland says:

      What did Paul Walker do?

    • Jen says:

Paul Walker was a creep, but he wasn’t preaching that everyone should shack up with a teenager in Hawaii. In fact he kept it incredibly quiet (probably because he knew everyone would think it was creepy).

    • OriginallyBlue says:

Paul Walker started dating a girl when she was a teenager and dated her for years. Yes it was wrong, but it was the worst thing he did. This guy is racist, homophobic, misogynistic and damn near killed 2 people and paid them off to avoid going to prison. I don’t think they are on the same level.

      • kibbles says:

Walker also never reportedly beat or abused any woman, child, or lover. Dating a teenager was morally wrong, but at least he dated her long term and seemed to be in a mature and respectful adult relationship with her at the time of his death. From all appearances, the girl loved him and had consented to being in a relationship with him.

The same can also be said about the semi-creepy relationship Celine Dion has had with her husband her entire life. He managed her when she was a pre-teen and honestly who knows what was really going on in their relationship before she reached age of consent. However, they seem to be in a loving and respectful marriage that will likely last until death.

What Phil Robertson is preaching isn’t as uncommon in the South as we would want to believe. However, it’s really f-ed up when a man feels the need to go up to a podium and preach to other men that women over the age of 20 are basically used up and worthless. Every circumstance is different, but at least in other cases, these men aren’t preaching and endorsing pedophilia, racism, homophobia, etc. on a stage or in a national publication.

The man is disgusting. He’s also violent which isn’t surprising. A man who doesn’t have respect for women and other human beings because of their sexuality, will be more likely to raise his fists because he believes that God has made him superior to females and homosexuals. Sickening that millions have now come to worship this man.

    • melinda says:

Huh? Sure the girl Paul was with was young, but I myself have always liked older man and have always found ones that are very respectful. Who is to say Walker wasn’t just as respectful. Shame on you for say such things without knowing their situation. And shame on you for bring Walker into the same convo as this sick red-neck.

  27. FingerBinger says:

It sounds like Phil and R. Kelly learned from the same school of dating and marriage. I know R.Kelly is essentially a predator, but this is gross and creepy too.

    • mayamae says:

Well, he could go the Jerry Lee Lewis route and endorse choosing your child bride from within your own family.

  28. Dreamyk says:

Phil: at 15 and 16 my daughter was going to school dances, to the mall with her girlfriends, concentrating on her school work and learning how to drive/rules of the road so she could get her drivers learners permit.

You sir are pedophillic misogynistic prick.

  29. Skye says:

If my daughters lived anywhere near Phil Robertson and his ilk, you better believe they’d be carrying Bibles everywhere. Big, thick, heavy ones. With metal bookmarks.

On second thought….a dictionary would do just as well.

  30. putchka says:

Another idiot with a platform. How many imbeciles can they cram on TV?

    • Decloo says:

As many as the imbeciles who watch this stuff. The reason these shows are so popular is because there is actually a huge demographic that feels the same way Phil does. That’s the scary part.

  31. yennefer says:

He talks about women as if they were cars or cooking robots, you know: check all the functions, contact a salesman before buying, don’t buy a used one, it will spoil before you drive it.

  32. Lucy2 says:

I think that can be the new slogan:
    A&E- Bending Over for Bigot-Money since 2013.

  33. kim says:

so funny that such a “popular” show and I have yet to find one person I am acquainted with that has seen an episode. Most common response is, “I’ve seen the advertising on stuff, but no…I don’t watch whatever they are. “

    • Hakura says:

Same here! I actually managed to ignore a lot of the idiot products everywhere (pretty much the same way I manage to ignore the ‘One Direction’ stuff absolutely everywhere). It was only when certain stores put up the really ‘in your face’ advertisements around the holidays that I actually asked my Mom ‘WTF is that even *about*? So they’re duck hunters? What’s the big f*cking attraction?”

She doesn’t watch it, so she couldn’t answer, except to say they make ‘duck calls’. xD I seriously think the ONLY product they *haven’t* plastered their faces on are razors.

  34. OriginallyBlue says:

      • Maryy says:

he obviously means teens should marry teens not that a 15 yr old girl should marry a 40 yr old man…come on now, reading comprehension isnt that difficult

  35. Anon says:

Wonder if Phil ever stopped beating his wife and children, other people?

    • Melanie says:

Did he do that? I’ve never heard he was physically abusive to his family. I wouldn’t be shocked but I’ve never heard it.

  36. buzz says:

    American Taliban

  37. Melanie says:

Man, I would be embarrassed if I just spent all last week supporting this guy.

  38. Sumodo1 says:

I live in a part of Florida where views like Phil Robertson’s are part of the local vernacular. That, and I’m not from here. So, being that I used to be in network news, I realize that cable nets are making beaucoup bucks televising human sideshows. If you buy into watching those shows, you MAY be encouraging MORE programming like that. If we all stop watching it, guess what? It will go away.

  39. St says:

The most funny part that he said that 4 years ago, that Duck DYnasty show has been popular for few years now. Which means he was in the spotlight for some time. And people knew he said those stuff. This video existed for 4 years. And it wasn’t hided in some underground safe or on moon. Yet for 4 years no one cared about what he said… But they suddenly do now… Why didn’t you cared before?

    • MJ says:

Because A&E made sure anytime he was shown on TV that he was heavily edited. He wrote a book called “Happy, Happy, Happy” that I’m sure was heavily edited and whenever he gave interviews there was always an A&E “minder” to make sure he didn’t say anything controversial.

People just thought they were a fun-loving, religious Southern family until the GQ interview came out, then the other videos started appearing. I don’t know why the videos weren’t released before. I’m sure there will be more, although I don’t think anything will happen. Duck Dynasty is too big of a cash cow for A&E to care.

      • mayamae says:

I’m surprised GQ hasn’t been slammed for their “liberal agenda” in “setting up” poor old Phil.

    • KT says:

EXACTLY!! This clip was shown AGES ago! And we all laughed because it was just Phil’s archaic grumbling about relationships ‘nowadays’. People need to lighten the hell up and realize that this is ALL scripted.

He’s not saying “creepy old duck hunters” should marry underage girls, he’s saying that he believes teenagers should marry teenagers; that they shouldnt wait too long to get married. A sentiment I, being 19, definitely do not agree with but good lord don’t take what he said out of context, he’s said plenty of other things that are offensive in context. One other commenter said they wouldnt let their daughters around the Robertsons…seriously? I mean, I know they’re bigots but if you’ve ever seen even a glimpse of the show you’d know just how well mannered they are. They not sexual predators, theyre homophobic racists

    • MJ says:

Very few people are taking it out of context.

He’s saying it is better for teenagers to marry because teen girls aren’t “fully formed” and the man/teenage boy can shape them into the type of subservient woman who does nothing but cook and clean for her husband and brainlessly does whatever he says, no questions asked. He’s basically saying teen girls should be stupid for wanting to be independent and he is heavily implying that they shouldn’t consider college or becoming fully educated because that way she might leave him and/or take his money (or not marry him in the first place).

That is every bit as offensive as what he said previously. And no, if I had a daughter I would not let her anywhere near this family.

      • anon says:

Pretty sure I wasn’t debating that point. I fully understand that’s what he meant thank you. I was saying that he’s not talking about men marrying young girls which is what some commenters and the even the article seems to suggest.

    • Pandy says:

I didn’t hear him say teens for teens … I heard him say he was talking to a teen and said it, but I can’t believe he wouldn’t give the same advice to say, a 36 yo bachelor looking for a wife. You are wrong here anon. He never said this was advice only for teens.

    • Hakura says:

Re: Who Phil was addressing with his ‘advice’ – I’m honestly not sure *who* he was directing his statement toward. In the quoted segment of the article, (while talking about others) he says *boys* are waiting until girls are older to marry them, which he’s saying doesn’t work (yadda yadda)… But I can’t say for sure if *that* means his advice is directed at *boys* (as opposed to ‘men’).

IF he is talking to *boys*, it’s still a horrible message, just a *different* horrible message than the one he’d be sending if he’s addressing men (or both boys/men).

    • Steve Zodiac says:

Actually he is saying that men of all ages should marry girls before they reach 20. He is talking about how girls should be getting married before they turn 20. At no point does he say anything about when men should be getting married. His comments in this article are very specific about the fact that he only considers 15 & 16 year old girls worth marrying and that by 20 years of age they are ruined. What others are saying about these redneck creeps is true. He endorses racism (likey belongs to the K.K.K.), has strange ideas about bestiality, bashes gays and women and pretty well endorses statutory rape and the taking of “child brides”.

As a refresher – here is what he says ” They got to where they getting hard to find, mainly because these boys are waiting till they get to be about 20 years old before they marry them. Look, you wait till they get to be 20 years old the only picking that’s going to take place is your pocket. ”

When he says “these boys are waiting till they get to be about 20 years old before they marry them” he means THE GIRLS – NOT THE BOYS.

This is what he means and this is why people are saying what they are saying about the creep.

      • Steve Zodiac says:

And to make this absolutely clear. He is referring to THE GIRLS when he says “till THEY get to be about 20 years old.” He is CLEARLY stating that the mistake that men are making these days is one of waiting until a girl reaches 20 years of age or older before marrying them. He is saying that guys should marry girls BEFORE they (the girls) reach that age. This is not about couples getting married too young. It is a clear and blatant attack on women and girls.

He is not saying that boys are waiting ’till they themselves are 20 before they get married. He is saying that males are waiting too long to grab these young girls for wives. It’s that old “get ’em while they’re young and keep ’em barefoot and pregnant” redneck mentality at play.

And do note that in the south the term “boys” as in “good ole’ boys” can referrer to grown men as well as a male under the age of 18. Boy does not mean a child. It can mean a grown man – just as well as an adult. 18 is the age of an adult. A boy is a MAN at age 18. People talk about our “boys in blue” or our “boys overseas” and use they term often times when referring to young adults. When someone like this talks about “these boys” he is not being literal.

  41. Dawn says:

So I don’t watch this junk ever but is there any possibility that this guy is just playing people to see how far he can go before people turn them off? He is already rich by everything I’ve read and people who know the family say this is all for show so I don’t know what to believe. He has fans and that to me is what is so scary that others truly believe in that drivel.

  42. Maureen says:

This man’s opinions do not affect my life, and I don’t see how they should affect anyone else’s life either. These are his opinions and they don’t mean one iota of anything to my life. Why get worked up about it??

    • Mich says:

This man is active in politics, specifically throwing his weight behind specific Tea Party candidates running for Congress. His opinions absolutely do affect your life.

      • Maureen says:

So what would you have? No Tea Party? No right-wingers? No Republicans, etc? This is a democracy we’re talking about. Our democracy is PRECIOUS. Politics is how we navigate through social and community issues which, in a country as incredibly diverse as ours, is naturally bound to contain numerous types of ideologies, personalities, and characters. Democracy is how we sort through it all without killing each other. So again I ask: what would you have? That no one but those who represent your own views should be allowed to express their opinions, or have elected representatives, or form social organizations, or vote?

This is not snark. It is something to really think about: How important is Democracy to you, really?

      • Leila in wunderland says:

@Maureen: Wow, there’s actually someone defending him. Do you think homophobia, misogyny, racism, and religious chauvinism make the world a better place, or a worse one? Are these the kind of people you want making laws in this country that affect people who aren’t heterosexual, male, white, and Christian?

Nobody is saying that he does not legally have the right to his views, the right to vote, the right to be a part of any organization. No one is even saying that he doesn’t have the right to run for any office. We’re just saying that attitudes like his have had a negative impact on human society and can have very real consequences for people who are say, gay, or bisexual, or black, or female, or Muslim, or atheist, or agnostic.

      • Mich says:

        @ Maureen

Don’t you dare. I corrected your statement that this man’s opinions do not have any impact on people’s lives and you accuse me of not supporting Democracy. That is effed up. Particularly at a time when civil rights are being rolled back across this country.

      • Maureen says:

        @ Leila

It’s bizarre that you found my comments supporting democracy and free speech as “defending him”. I didn’t defend Phil Robertson. I defended his right to free speech and his right to donate to whatever political platforms he chooses, because I have the same right and so do you if you live in America.

        @ Mich

How you interpreted my comments as accusing you of not supporting democracy is beyond me. Whatever. I made my point and I stand by it.

    • kibbles says:

Anyone with wealth and the means to express their views in the national media does have a large affect on public discourse, politics, and our lives. This man has caused one of the largest firestorms in American discourse in 2013/2014. People have spent weeks talking about him and millions have come to his support for his homophobic, racist, and now misogynistic public statements. After Duck Dynasty ends, I wouldn’t be surprised if one of Phil’s sons runs for political office or if FOX gives someone in the family their own show or job as a pundit much like Sarah Palin. These people have a large influence on the lives of the millions who tune in to watch them on television. If they are preaching hate, then some of their fans will believe that being homophobic, racist, sexist, etc. is okay too. Yes, there really are people that stupid on this earth. People like Phil contribute to the bullying and violence against gays and women that still happen everyday in America.

      • dagdag says:

@kibbles said ….People like Phil contribute to the bullying and violence against gays and women that still happen everyday in America. ..

This is the point. They contribute and are relevant to people who think and believe like them. If I would not read some gossip pages I would have ever known about them. I do not care for fundamentalists of any type of religion and I would never get into any type of discussion with a fundamentalist.

They are no danger to me. Ok, I have to add, I live in Germany and churches do not play any important role in daily life, if at all. The official churches are actually empty, some sects or small church organizations are full, but they really do not count.
I know ONE person who goes to church and that is my brother who is a protestant theologian and very critical towards the bible.

    • MavenTheFirst says:

That’s right, Maureen. Don’t have an opinion, and don’t care about the world because it doesn’t affect you. I suggest you study world history to see how the story ends with this attitude.

      • Maureen says:

I don’t care about the world … because I don’t wish to engage in a thrashing of some guy whose opinions happen to be different from mine? No, I don’t think his views are important to me or to the world at large. I don’t happen to believe that every unpleasant opinion spells gloom and doom for humanity.

  43. Andrea says:

Apparently Phil wants the divorce rate at 100% (my father is 71 and states that everyone he knew who married their high school/college sweetheart are now on their 2nd, 3rd, or even 4th spouse). Yes, you can quote me your story until the cows come home that you are married to your hs or college sweetheart, you are not the norm. Most people I know who married before the age of 30 are now divorced also. I didn’t have a bf until I was 18 and I guess old Phil would have had me marry him (I left him due to his verbal abuse not to mention threatening me with his gun). I’m 32 and still don’t feel mature enough to be married, I certainly was not at 15. I just wanted a bf at 15, not marriage.

I have friends trying to get me into this show, but I know that it is not for me. Besides, seeing these phonies used to be clean cut, it is clearly an act like Breaking Amish. They need to go away and not be on TV.

  44. Nance says:

Can wait the people defend the “free speech” for this, this will be so funny. Come out Sarah!

  45. Nance says:

I would like to think he is just trolling, but I’ve seen documentaries about some countries that allow or don’t check properly people to marry minors. It’s even cultural at some places, this is sick.

  46. Jennifer12 says:

So he’s basically recommending that guys be pedophiles?

    • Maureen says:

No, because he didn’t recommend anything that is illegal. Like it or not (and I don’t particularly) it is perfectly legal in some states to marry at 15 or even younger with parental consent.

And anyway, pedophiles target very young children, not teens.

      • MavenTheFirst says:

He recommended the easy control and subjugation of women by marrying barely pubescent girls. This transcends any issues of illegality. But perhaps that doesn’t matter to you?

      • Maureen says:

You mean like I “don’t care about the world or have opinions”? Maven, you certainly have a way of making unfounded and outlandish accusations against people who post comments that don’t please you.

    • Hakura says:

@Jennifer12 – As Maureen states, the term for it is different, given the age group. “‘Ephebophilia’ is the primary or exclusive adult sexual interest in mid-to-late adolescents, generally ages 15 to 19.[Re: Wiki]”. So if he *is* telling adults to go for girls that age, he’d be promoting that guys be ‘Ephebophiles’.

  47. noirod says:

    He’s JOKING!!

    • MavenTheFirst says:

      So, who’s laughing besides you?

    • sapphoandgrits says:

No, he isn’t. Especially since he started dating a barely-14-year-old when he was an 18 year-old man, and married her as a pregnant barely 16-year-old just shy of his 21st birthday. The way he’s treated his wife during their married is, AT BEST, abusive.

  48. jwoolman says:

    Not defending the Philster, but:

Marrying very young has been normal in many cultures and times. The thinking was once you reached puberty, it was ok. People lived with extended families, though, so the youngsters weren’t usually out on their own. We may not marry so early now, but many young teenagers are in sexual relationships and pregnancy is not that uncommon among kids who in earlier times would often just get married. My mother (born in the early 1920s) said that out in the country, nobody ever set a wedding date until the girl got pregnant. It’s actually a major cultural shift that marriage is an unusual option in such circumstances, along with better access to more reliable birth control.

We delay marriage nowadays more because in our culture, early marriage tends to be a disastrous pattern… We need a lot more time to learn what we need, and girls are very likely to stop formal education when they marry. Phil’s case shows that- his wife was 16 and pregnant when they married and she felt she needed to put up with his abuse. But while she was busy raising his kids, cooking his food, doing his laundry and dodging his abuse, he was getting a college degree and a master’s degree. Getting a wife tends to help men do what they want.

Someone mentioned Jerry Lee Lewis and his 13 year old wife. No comparison to Phil. I don’t think Jerry was abusive and his wife certainly had no trouble speaking her mind at any age. Jerry came from an isolated community where girls expected to marry early (his wife waited a year longer than her sister) but she stayed with her family and the husband moved in with them. Sex before marriage was apparently frowned upon, so folks reached the logical conclusion that horny teenagers should just get married … 🙂 Divorce was common, so as people grew they shed their spouses easily enough. Jerry wasn’t even out of his teens, I think, but it was his second marriage. It was an interestingly fluid system but did rest on the reality that there wasn’t much for girls to do at the time and birth control was probably not much if it existed at all (so marriage would protect the child’s right to support). I don’t think duck picking or gold digging were even under discussion, though. Phil is an obnoxious odd duck, and he would be equally obnoxious no matter when or if he married a woman of any age.

Jerry’s wife was also his second cousin or maybe further removed, which was also common (as it is in many places) and I imagine protective for the girl. Second cousins who marry don’t have extra risk of genetic problems. Actually the extra risk even for first cousins is quite small. The biggest risk is between full siblings and then between parent and child.

    • Sheena says:

Other cultures and past culture but not in this current day and age in the US. 15 is under the age of consent in most states in the US.

  49. Sachi says:

This is the guy who said, on the show, that women are like dogs: they both have their quirks. F— him.

He often makes sexist comments about women on the show itself. Even his wife compared him to a caveman. In her words, “Phil is like, ‘I’m the man and you’re the woman’…except we’re not in the cave, we’re in modern times.” There were times on the show when he’d give her a look, and she’d put on this cutesy-poo face, like a child. Living with him must be a nightmare.

    • MavenTheFirst says:

“This is the guy who said, on the show, that women are like dogs: they both have their quirks.”

This is me holding back a lot. No self-respecting woman would let this pass. I will shut up now because I am itching to say deeply evil things.

  50. LAK says:

    No words.

This guy need’s to stop talking already! He is living in the dark ages ! Keep your religious beliefs to yourself ,take your bible and stupid comment’s and go awayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!
