I’ve been getting emails from the dragonflies. Apparently, the Dragonflies were expecting some Tom Hiddleston coverage at the end of 2013, or in the first few days of 2014. I apologize for not getting on it sooner! Tommy doesn’t have any new major interviews out – there are a few newish quotes, but I wasn’t sure if they were actually old quotes just getting recycled, so I didn’t say anything. But as the Dragonflies have repeatedly told me, Tommy ended up “winning” some prestigious end-of-the-year “awards”. It’s pretty funny, actually. Here’s the breakdown:
CNN did an online poll for everyone’s favorite celebrities of 2013, and shock of shocks, Tommy’s dragonflies (or just Josh Horowitz!) ensured that he won “CNN’s Favorite Male Celebrity of 2013.” Maybe I’m just mad because the Cumberbitches only got Benedict Cumby to #2. Damn it, CNN.com readers! The list also included (in descending order) RDJ, Hugh Jackman, the largely absent Chris Hemsworth, Idris Elba (he’s the only man of color on the list), Bradley Cooper (meh), Joseph Gordon Levitt, Justin Timberlake and Leonardo DiCaprio. Yeah… that’s a decent top ten. It’s not MY top ten, but at least there’s no, like, Ian Somerhalder.
Speaking of Somerhalder… he almost became E! News’ Celeb of the Year of 2013. Except that the Dragonflies once again swooped in and voted until their fingers (and other body parts) were numb. Tommy got 52.9 % of the vote (38,689 votes!) and Ian Somerhalder got 47.1 %. And that tells you a lot about both Tommy and Ian and their respective fan bases. “The kids” who watch Vampire Diaries are the ones voting like crazy in this poll, and still… the Dragonflies out-flanked them.
And finally, Tommy won VH1’s annual poll of “The Hottest Supernatural Characters” for 2013. And when I say Tommy, I mean Loki. Which I’m fine with. Out of all of the questionable polls, this is the one I find most agreeable. Loki is a major star, and it wouldn’t surprise me at all if Loki got his own franchise. VH1 also noted that they had people voting for Hiddleston from 135 countries, and he’s especially big in China. Good job, Tommy.

He’s no Cumberbatch, but I must say, I like the guy, and I thought that he was the best thing about Thor: The Dark World. Congrats to him on all of his “awards”.
I loved him, then he got annoying, and now I love him again. He is really likable, and a good actor. I even like him more than Cumberbatch :prepares to get hit:

Tom is cute and likeable though… I completely understand why you and all of the “Hiddlestoners” like him.
I like Cumberbatch a lot. And I find him attractive, to the horror of most people I know, I just like Tom better.
Oh Spooks, I know I wouldn’t hit you. Everyone has their preferences and it looks as if I’m the opposite of you. I like TH but like BC more. I don’t think either is good or bad — it just is.
Ah spooks, never be afraid to speak your mind here! My preference for TH or BC tends to swing depending on which way the wind is blowing on any given day. Even with their characterizations aside, their personalities both appeal to me. I must say that I think TH is actually having great fun slumming it with the great unwashed and seems to shine most when allowed to bring his own humor to the party. The fact he can appeal as Shakespeare boy, a vampire and Loki is truly a great testament to his acting range. BC is similar and has cracked out that great sense of humor, but he seems to keep a lid on it all more than TH. I would love to see him unleash and really have some fun with a character in a comedy lead!
As you can see, sense of humor is sexy to me!

Before seeing this new thread on dear Tommy, the wind was blowing towards BC. In fact, it was practically a hurricane towards BC. LOL.
So glad that there’s finally something on TH. I was beginning to get really bored about the lack of news (good news that is). Anyway kudos to TH for being able to win these awards albeit through Hiddlestoners, Dragonflies and whatnot-fans.

I was getting a bit batch-crazy there for a while, but seeing Hiddles again after what has felt like months has been refreshing. Now I get to see the new Sherlock and will swing back, then watch Coriolanus and over I go to Hiddles again.

Did you really enjoy the whole performance? I have read that the acting is good but some of the arrangements were a bit annoying such as the chair moving and loud music.
It was definitely something to get used to because of how the play was originally written. The whole shower thing was probably a practicality since Tom needs to wash off for the next scene and yes, because some people want to see a topless Tom.
I like electronic music so I had no problem with it so I may not be the best person to talk to on that. I will say that because of lack of props, you actually do need to know the play and listen. At least read Wikipedia or something. I kind of saw the chair thing like when you are a political official, you are always in the public eye so people will always see what you are doing. Hence, barely anyone left the stage.
It was cool to see the actor who played Dean Thomas from Harry Potter in it, wasn’t expecting him. Also, there was a guy who was in Parade’s End with Cumby.
That’s an interesting point re the chairs. I hadn’t thought of it.
I’ve seen quite a bit of talk about it on Twitter but it’s not an unusual device – you’ll see it quite frequently at arts or fringe festivals. But I took it as simple functionality – if you’re going to stage a play in which the majority of scenes have a crowd in a tiny space with a minimal cast, you need to create the crowd energy somehow. So you put the non-scene actors in chairs on set and have them glower at the audience. Crowd energy sorted.
I liked the set design even if it did get a bit busy at times with all the moving of chairs. There was that nothing new in it but it did tie in nicely to the costume design and political relevance for today. I thought the shower scene (private pain) contrasted nicely with the public display of wounds in the see through humility gown. It also raised issues around the cult of celebrity which was both ironic and relevant to todays lust for celebri .
Across the board the acting was good. Tom was excellent. His dramatic timing was spot on and he brought a variety of emotions and intelligence to his performance which made him very watchable. He also gives a lot to the other performers allowing everyone to shine. It was very much ensemble playing.
The trouble with the Donmar is that at any given time those sitting on either side of the stage have someone’s back to them which in crucial scenes is annoying because it means you are dependent on voice and body language to see the complete interaction,
The balance of the focus between politics and embittered war hero I felt gave it more relevance for a today’s audience. That was in part die to the way Tom/Josie interpreted Coriolanus by making him more of a likable but flawed warrior as opposed to the angry snobbish fighting machine. He did in corporate his distain for the plebeians in a very witty caustic manner which was probably more damming than an anger.
I’m surprised Benedict didn’t win all those, he’s been everywhere this year.
I don’t think Loki would do well in his own movie. He’s that kind of character who needs a good foil to work with, which is why he does well in Thor because Thor is in it. If he were on his own trying to be the protagonist, it wouldn’t work.

I think its because his fans will vote and vote often so that he wins these things, no matter what. Is the win diminished when the ballot is stuffed? Just wondering.
Cumberbatch fans do the same. Ian Solm-whatitsface fans do the same. The list goes on.
Oh, lord love little Puddletom. All those awards and none for acting. And a generation of fans set to hit their doctors’ surgeries with RSI from all that clicking. He’s an expensive crush, healthwise!
Anyway. I saw Coriolanus. If anyone’s interested, I can list my likes and dislikes. I wasn’t that keen (for taste and understanding rather than quality reasons). Gotta give Tommy-omelette some mega-sixerpoints for superlative diction, though.

Ok. Well. There are lots of fripperies. I’m at a Shakespeare production principally for the verse and the acting, so concepts and staging don’t really bother me one way or the other, but I get that they are Marmite for some. If you’re not big on bells and whistles, they might get on your nerves. But there’s nothing outlandish or that hasn’t been done before.
Bummers: I thought too much was missing. I don’t mind hoofing it all the way up to theatre to find a favourite speech or two missing, but when it’s a shedload of good stuff missing, then I get miffy. And even after all the cuts, I didn’t get Rourke’s point or vision. No idea what she was trying to say about the play or Coriolanus himself. If it’s not clear what you’re saying AFTER taking half of a play away, then um… well… yeah. I didn’t like the gender swap for the tribunes and I didn’t like the bits that were played for laughs.
Smiles: I thought all the cast were great. Especially Mark Gatiss, as I don’t usually rate him as highly acting-wise as many seem to do. And including Hadley Fraser, who seems to be getting a bit of a pasting in quite a few quarters. Of all the potentially contentious things about this production, I didn’t think making the Volscians gruff northerners was one. Puddletom has a beautiful facility with the verse and genuine commitment. His Caius wasn’t mine, but I genuinely give him props for what he did. Findlay, Findlay and Findlay. Did I say Findlay?
Overall: I didn’t get it (I blame myself for this) and elements of it weren’t to my taste but it was a highly competent production and full of quality performances. It’s basically Findlay’s play.
PS: I also saw Protest Song at the NTShed. I know Rhys Ifans (quite rightly) is denigrated as a douche around here, but I like him as an actor. And this was by far the best thing I’ve seen in a very long time.
Thanks, Sixer. Excellent review. I have heard similar things about Rourke in regards to exactly how she was trying to portray the character of Coriolanus. I am seeing this on screen in February and very much looking forward to it.

Perhaps this one is a bit deep for some of the hiddlestoners and that’s why there were still tickets left for you to get (I’m still jealous of that!). Either that or their mummies wouldn’t let them out that late at night! 😛
Squirrel – honestly, I think we just hit the website at exactly the right moment for a return. As I said, we were supposed to see Henry V, but my parents fancied it and we gave up the tickets to them. In the end, it all worked out wonderfully – my parents loved Henry and Sixlet Major is still walking on air such was his lurve for Puddletom and Coriolanus. Father Christmas smiled upon me this year.

So, what of note was cut from Coriolanus? To be honest, I can’t see how you can cut much from that play. Although it’s long, dramaturgically, it’s tight. All I can imagine cutting is some of Menenius’ stuff. I’m seeing the live screening on Jan 30th, so I’m looking forward to chatting about it further then. I’ll look out for Protest Song on NT Live. Right now, I’m all about Shakespeare. This week, I have Wooster Group’s Troilus and Cressida, then next week, I’m seeing Langella’s King Lear, which got great reviews when it played in the UK.
I’m curious about what was cut, and I was a little worried that the cuts were intended to make Caius seem more noble and heroic. Not sure if that was what the director actually did.

Isn’t Henry Cavill supposed to be really smart? And now that I think about it, Vin Diesel and Tom Hardy I’ve heard are smart, too.
I guess what I meant is that yeah, there are smart hot guys out there, but I just feel like the Cumberbatches of the world are the ones that really put a smile on my face. When Chris Pine did that interview with Graham Norton and Benedict awhile back, Cumby blew him out of the water as far as personality went. Chris seems like a good dude, but he also just seemed like he was just trying to get through the interview (while being incredibly meh) while Cumby was more interested in being entertaining and letting his kick-ass personality fly. I was hoping that I would see a little spark of coolness from Chris, but either he was having a bad day or just really is “meh” personality wise.
And Quinto, as awesome as he is, plays for the other team and probably wouldn’t look twice at me on the street. It’s hard to get too excited about him being all great considering that, lol.
I wouldn’t judge someone’s personality based on a talk show interview. Some people find it hard to be funny and entertaining when they are pressured. If I was on that couch on Graham Norton I probably wouldn’t say a word.
When I said that the Hemsworths and Gandy are boring, I meant they look boring, I don’t know much about their personalities. I just need something interesting to find a man attractive. Glasses, freckles, a big nose, something. and of course personality.

GeeMoney, I had not heard that about any of the men you wrote about but Tom Hardy being smart wouldn’t shock me. Can’t really comment much on the other two…. But Vin Diesel might be smart. Huh.
I must agree with Marty on Hiddles being traditionally good-looking. I would call him classically handsome in an Old Hollywood kind of way. I think Cumby, whom I adore as I adore no other, is a good example of a guy who “grows on you,” looks better & better over time, & is indeed getting more handsome with age. He didn’t shoot me between the eyes the first time I saw him. Things changed for me when I saw him as Sherlock whipping the scarf off that beautiful coat, & then I heard his voice & that, as they say, was that. Now I am completely, incurably Batched.
But Tommy, on the other hand, was on Charlie Rose with the War Horse team. He had longer, gingery hair & had a bit of facial scruff. He looked like Prince Hal without the hollow crown. I screeched to a halt on my way into the room & demanded to know “Who is THAT?”

Agree 100% with you LadyS. Vin Deisel has never struck me as anything but a head scratcher (as in I scratch my head and wonder how he ever got famous). I’ve not noted him as every having said anything of substance EVER… His looks don’t appeal to me either.
TH and BC really only started appealing to me when they let their intelligence and personalities shine through. Suddenly they become very interesting! That they are also handsome was a bonus. I am a woman who likes substance!
Interestingly enough, I’ve read that Vin Diesel writes Dungeons and Dragons lit, which would make me think 1) he’s a bit of a nerd and 2) he’s probably pretty smart. Plus, I hear that short film he made called Multifacial was really good. He’s more than a meathead.
I’ve always thought that Hiddleston was cute. I don’t have the hots for him, but I sure as hell would love to be his friend. He seems like he would be extremely fun to hang out with.
All Cumberbatch had to do was open his mouth, and when that happened, I was instantly attracted to him. His intelligence and personality is such a turn on that he has literally become nothing short of wonderful in my book, looks be damned.
I still find myself very attracted to Chris Hemsworth, though. Hell, a poster of the man is on the back of my office door at work! My co-worker and I like to stare at it when we’ve had a rough day, lol.

Couldn’t quite put my finger on why classically handsome guys like Brad, Gandy, Hemsworth et al, do nothing for me but that’s as good a summation as any I’ve thought of. I like man with a bit of character in his face, a certain inimitable aspect and capacity for expressiveness that shows personality. That and a sense of humor.

I agree, Roberta. I would like to see him get roles that go above and beyond appeal to fangirls and see him get more notice from the mainstream public. Loki and the Marvel movies are great but they appeal to a relatively small demographic, which is not the one I fit into. Hiddleston first came to my notice via The Hollow Crown and that type of work is where I appreciate him the most.

I love Tommy as an actor, and I love Loki as a character, but it is so far removed from the actual norse legend that the whole Thor movie franchise is WRONG. Loki is supposed to be hated and gets what he deserves in the end. Now Marvel is rewriting the legend because the bad guy went and got popular. I would be amazed if CH wasn’t secretly spitting chips about this given he has basically had to take a back seat to let Loki shine. I wouldn’t like a stand alone Loki movie unless it was truer to the myth. Thor 3 is going to be interesting and the last chance Marvel have to stop ruining the legend and bring it back to how it is supposed to be.

I bought my copy of The Hollow Crown on DVD from Amazon. Not sure where/if it is streaming online. I do highly recommend it. It aired for 3 hours at a time over 3 consecutive weeks on my local PBS affiliate. Very engrossing and well acted by all.
I don’t want a Loki movie at all. As much of a nice boost as the movies have given Tom’s career, I don’t want him to forever be known as the guy who played Loki. I saw someone on Twitter say, “I am going to see Loki tonight!” in reference to seeing Coriolanus. I cringed.
@SecretSquirrel, the movie is made to be faithful to the comic, not the actual Norse legend. But I don’t know if the comic is faithful to the legend.

Prestigious end of year awar…hahahahaha! Oh dear, that is just, oh god that’s funny. Internet fans are hilarious. I think waiting until he’s nominated for or wins some real awards would be a lot more helpful to his reputation then goosing online polls at this point. The public knows him as Loki, and….Loki. Let his future work speak Dragonflies.
I wouldn’t be too sad for Cumby Kaiser, he’s got actual award nominations this year (double ensemble SAGs no less). Although many of his fans do him no favours either!

Mia 4S, sorry, but Cumberbatch doesn’t have any actual award nominations in his own name. Those SAG nominations are, as you said, for ENSEMBLE, and one of those films features three people who received SAG noms in their own names and the other features two people who received SAG noms in their own names.
SAG ensemble award >>>>>> Hottest Supernatural Character of the Year or Celebrity of the Year. That’s my point.
It’s about career longevity. One puts on a list with Meryl Streep, the other puts you on the list with the guy from the Vampire Diaries. I think Hiddleston is talented, he has great potential, which is why I think fans making a big deal out of Internet polls is silly. It’s the same with Cumberbatch in these polls. Neither guy should be the same breath as Vampire Diaries or Supernatural or whatever. Narrow genre Internet fame. It’s not a big deal but I do hope fans realize how silly it all is.

Btw I always wondered that these supernatural guys and Ian have such massive fan following yet they got no Hollywood offers or heck even new tv offers….why is that??? Does there popularity and fan following count for nothing….very strange if you ask me
Mia, I do understand the difference between the silly end of the year internet polls and the serious acting nominations, but both Hiddleston and Cumberbatch have been part of nominated ensemble casts. In 2011, Hiddleston was in Midnight in Paris and War Horse, both of which were Oscar-nominated for Best Film. I suspect he doesn’t care about being eonline’s celebrity of the year or VH1’s superwhatever of the year but being part of an ensemble, even one that includes Meryl Streep, while great, doesn’t mean the attention is going to filter down to someone who didn’t get individual recognition, particularly when 3 other people in the film did. The reviews that I have read of August: Osage County barely mention Cumberbatch even being in the film once they get past Streep, Roberts, Margo Martindale, Chris Cooper, Juliette Lewis, Ewan McGregor, Dermott Mulroney, and Abigail Breslin.

It’s also worth mentioning that SAG gave a nomination to Jeremy Irons for The Hollow Crown, which I found a bit of a slap in the face for Hiddleston.
As a side note, none of the above was meant as a Cumberbatch is better than Hiddleston or viceversa, because personally I love them both.
I see his picture regularly on Celebitchy but I still have no clue who he is… I’m behind though – I’m just learning about Cumberbatch. He’ll be next.
It certainly gives you an idea of how obsessive Tom’s fans are, in terms of sheer number there is no way Tom could have beaten Ian Somerhalder, the second has 4 million followers on twitter, the first almost 1 million.
But, meaningless awards aside, I’m glad for him that Coriolanus is doing so good, hopefully he’ll do more theatre.

I’d take Hiddles over Cumberbatch any day of the week: his voice is better, he’s far more charming, and certainly more appreciative of everything.
That being said, he should stick with theater.

He’s good and funny in Only Lovers Left Alive. He is just 32 I believe so he has a bit of time to show what he can do. I like him a lot I also like BC but both need to be wary of over exposure.
It’s funny that an actor who’s 32 is considered a young actor, but was he an actresses he would be almost past his prime.

He isn’t old but it’s not like he has just appeared on the horizon, that happened in 2009.
Loved him in Only Lovers Left Alive and agree re over exposure. Sometimes it can really put you off an actor the press are constantly playing them up whilst ignoring actors who are just as good.Chiwetel Ejiofor was pretty much ignored prior to TIFF but as it turned out he has given one of the best performances of this year.
Tom did not really get going with his career until after RADA when he was 26 so he is not doing to badly considering he has worked with some excellent directors and had parts in credible TV shows. HE won theatre awards and leading roles in indie films in his first year out of Rada. He was actually recruited to a well respected agency whilst he was a student at Cambridge and had a few TV roles prior to his even going to RADA.
I am really glad he has returned to theatre and the wonderful reviews are the icing on the cake.
Well this was bound to happen. As I read some Hiddleston fan on IMDB saying that some 8000 votes are hers only on that E and CNN poll as she voted non stop for like 6-7 hrs…gosh.
How can people have so much free time on their hand???
I am happy that Cumby didn’t win any poll cz first they are useless and last time I checked the comments on CNN list….many were mocking Tom, calling him overrated and some even asking who is he??!? I don’t want Cumby to get that wrath so glad he came second.
hahaha! #2 isn’t much better. Cumberbatch is usually found on the same lists as Hiddleston. I love them both, but both are ridiculously overhyped and treated like trophies by their fandoms. Awards, polls, etc are nothing but vain validation.

I feel like many magazines put these two on nomination lists because they know their fans will vote and garner clicks. They want more clicks so whoever garners that will be there.
To me it’s just a harmless poll. In fact, I loved that they are getting a lot of love from GQ UK’s Best Dressed, for example. It’s stupid as well, but it’s good fun.
I actually think the opposite. It shows that more people are paying attention to less conventional types in Hollywood. It’s like the public is putting a foot down and telling the media enough with shoving down our throats who we should think are attractive or should grace the silver screen. I say, it’s a good thing =) The media is finally paying attention to what the public wants. Of course that doesn’t guarantee jobs lined up for them, but at least we can tell the media what to spoon feed us lol

I agree Bubbles! Tis a damn shame. Even legit actresses still get hounded about their “beauty tricks” and diet and exercise.
Benny did do well in one area which was something to do with some of his internet stuff receiving high hits but I agree the polls tell you nothing about their career status or acting ability . I was surprised that it was even considered noteworthy or the relative merits of who won or lost even generated a discussion.

Who misses his tweets? I do even if they were really random and funny at times. I’ve made a list of my favourite ones.
5) when he did song of the day and put the wrong video with it.
4) when he was trying to delete a tweet and had to be helped out by a fan whist being laughed at by his friend
3) his rant about people asking if he really rode a horse and drew the pictures in War Horse
2) his funny tweets documenting everything on his train journey home including funny comments about the train announcements.
1) New Year’s Eve/day when he kept drunk tweeting and making no sense.

Yeah, I agree with this. As entertaining as his older tweets were, I think he made the right decision. Although he still gets inundated with tweets and some of them are really crazy so I have wonder if he may have waited too long to pull back. Whether he actually tweets or not is apparently not of much importance to some; they bombard him with inanity all the damn time.
But those tweets will die away as they move onto the “next big thing”. At least I hope so.
And he probably doesn’t read many of them these days.

Well he never really tweeted fans in the old days of twitter (with the exception of the fan that helped him delete a tweet) it was just his ramblings which is why people sign up to twitter in the first place.
It’s so sad he has to stop being himself for the sake of the fans who have no control of themselves and are embarrassing. Unfortunately for the rest of us they are the loudest, hence the reason why Tommy is on top of every poll.

I didn’t see the tweet in question, but based on some of the shots of his riding, I cringed. He had potential–lots of it–but I kept wanting to tell him Heels Down! Back Straight! (Okay, I spend way too much time with horses.)
Crazy.. I remember when Stars were made because of a break out performance. not because of the number of twitter followers or some random awards/polls.
but I guess times they are a changing.
Ok yes he is pretty hot but he is also a very good actor. I saw him in Warhorse when it first came out and the scene where he knows he is about to die is stellar. He was wonderful in the Hollow Crown. He is the best thing about the Thor movies. So the man deserves to be noticed but I wish it wasn’t so swayed towards this shallow polling crap.

As attractive and as talented as he is, he gets on my nerves. Can’t help but roll my eyes at his ‘wins’ and his borderline obsessive fandom. Albeit not all of them are nuts, a good majority are though, ie: one girl on tumblr cursed me out because I found him ‘annoying’. He needs to disappear a little. A Loki film wouldn’t hold its own because like others mentioned he needs a good cast around him to bring out the best in Loki.
