Who was the best-dressed at the ‘Girls’ premiere: Lena, Allison, Zosia or Jemima?

Why was there so much satin and sateen at the Girls Season 3 premiere last night? Ugh. Girls premiered in NYC last night at the Lincoln Center (which is a fight I don’t have the energy for today). I know it’s bizarre, but I’m just going to say it… I like Lena Dunham’s dress the best. I personally don’t think any of these ladies are living up to their potential style-wise, but Lena is at least giving me some glamour and Sparkly Realness. Lena’s dress is Rochas Spring 2014. I usually think Rochas is pretty overrated (kind of like Lena), but I like the idea of this and the execution is decent. Her “do no harm” styling is pretty good too – Lena made an effort and we should applaud that.

Allison Williams – who is content to be “the pretty one” of Girls – wore satin Christian Dior. I loved what Red Carpet Fashion Awards had to say about this: “There is something very Ariel Winter/Lucy Hale about this frock, and what I mean by that is that it feels better suited to a teen Hollywood starlet.” I was thinking that I could see Carey Mulligan wearing this in a longer version too. It really feels like Allison only really gives a crap about how pretty we think she is and how she dresses. So you’d expect her to knock it out of the park on the red carpet, but this dress just feels like some sad reject that was offered to Marion Cotillard and Jennifer Lawrence and a million other girls before it got to Allison.

As for the other two ladies, Zosia Mamet and Jemima Kirke… Zosia wore Saint Laurent – a blah little black dress that I’m not feeling. I don’t have the designer ID on Jemima’s dress. Maybe it’s vintage, but I doubt it. It looks like a new dress trying to look vintage.

I like the black dress best; simple and pretty. But out of the others, I actually have to say Lena. I never thought I’d type those words, but she definitely looks the best.

    • Kiddo says:

I agree. Allison looks like she’s wearing restaurant bling, a la the Jen Aniston movie about the office.

    • Esti says:

I’m with you on the black dress, simple and sexy. She normally dresses so badly, this is refreshing.

    • Spooks says:

Where did Allison say she’s content to be the “pretty” one? I haven’t seen that.
She has a face that could look really well with strong makeup, like Kristen Stewart has, Too bad she isn’t a little more adventurous.
I can’t desice which one looks best because they all look so so awful.

    • QQ says:

Im here for Zosia’s dress and to say ZOSIA ZOSIA ZOSIA (that name is so dang pretty and enchanting to me)

  2. Leah says:

Jemima is always gonna be the coolest. She gets by on sheer attitude and sass.

    • Esmom says:

Maybe but that dress is seriously fug and unflattering. It looks like Carrie’s prom dress. I think I like Allison’s the best, maybe because she looks the most put together and that color is pretty.

  3. lucy2 says:

I don’t think any of them look very good. Zosia and Lena’s dresses were better, but they all just kind of look a mess.

  4. Jessica says:

    I dislike all of them.

  5. pretty says:

Can’t wait for this show. I think the show is very fun to watch. I love the dialogues. And that Adam guy is so hot. And Elijah.

    • Leah says:

Adam Driver is so hot. I am shocked this site hasn’t discovered him yet. Since they ship other weird but hot dudes like Cumby. Maybe its because he isn’t british.

      • Hillshmill says:

Agreed! At first I didn’t like Adam bc of his character. But then u found myself reading articles about him and realized I had a crush. Dude was a marine before he got into acting.

      • Spooks says:

Just yesterday I searched for the oldest Cumby post here and it was titled: Benedict Cumberbatch is surprisingly heterosexual. Who would have though he would become sexy man no.1 here, lol.

    • Nev says:

      WORD.

      when he is running….heaven.

  6. Kiddo says:

Speaking of Carey Mulligan, did anyone else see Inside LLewyn Davis yet? I love the Coen brothers and this dark movie, but I thought Mulligan was the least convincing in character; a bit wooden even.

    • Kezia says:

Haven’t seen it yet, but to add my two cents I never find her believable in anything, I think she’s wooden in everything.

      • don't kill me i'm french says:

        did you see SHAME?
        she’s different in SHAME.
As i dislike her acting in NEVER LET ME GO (she cries in every scene, her character is passive and whiny) as she’s strong , broken and sexual in SHAME

    • don't kill me i'm french says:

i saw it : it’s all for Oscar Isaac

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

I was supposed to see a double header of American Hustle and Llewyn Davis last week but I was too sick.

What I REALLY want to do is American Hustle, Inside Llewyn Davis, and Her.
David O. Russell, Cohen Brothers and Spike Jonze. YES PLEASE!

      • NYC_girl says:

American Hustle was good. I loved the clothes. I saw Her last Friday, alone – and cried. It was sad. Love Joaquin though.

      • Kiddo says:

I’m not as excited about American Hustle. There is too much hype. I’ll wait until it’s streaming. Nebraska is supposed to be good, and I’d also like to see Her.

      • m says:

I really wasn’t feeling American Hustle. The acting was great but it was too long and the editing was absolute shit. It was also hard to follow.

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

I love Joaquin and Amy Adams. As far as Scarlett goes, I might have to just block her out with my hand 😉

Just kidding. I don’t hate Scarlett, just not a huge fan.

    • Grant says:

I think Carey Mulligan is criminally overrated. She was on the verge of being the new “It Girl” circa 2010, so I’m glad that she’s kind of been eclipsed by the likes of JLaw/Jessica Chastain/etc.

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

        Noooooo! I love Carey!
I like JLaw too though. Chastain is hit or miss for me.

    • BSandham@hotmail.com says:

I saw Inside Llewyn Davis and I thought Carey Mulligan’s performance was lousy. She’s usually a decent actress but not in this movie-she overacted and was shrill. I wonder if it was the direction? I thought all the other actors were good. I liked the movie-very atmospheric and I loved the mid-century aesthetic.

  7. Anna says:

I like Zosia’s dress the best.
I didn’t really like Lena before, but after hearing that she made an incredibly tasteless joke about Karla Homolka and Paul Bernardo’s rapes and murders, I can’t stand Lena.

    • cr says:

Had to Google that. I have a macabre sense of humor, but joking about dressing up as Karla and Paul and her sister/victim crosses the line.

As for everyone’s dresses here, blech to all of them.

  8. gg says:

I guess it’s supposed to be alt-chic to look like hell even when you’re all dressed up now?

  9. Sabrina says:

I have to agree that Lena’s dress is best. Allison’s dress does look like something someone younger would be wearing.

    • Gauchita says:

It looks like the mall version of the one GOOPy used at an award.. you know, the napkind with gems on the pockets? Allison has the hair of Waity and the style of Gwyneth; that one of a boring, anorexic, spoiled rich girl. And I would hate her for it IF she didn’t owned. This is what she said in that other post about mag covers for the girls in tv: “I wanted to establish a baseline: Here’s what I look like, I have long brown hair, I wear this kind of dress, this is the deal. You can count on it! “. She can be boring if she wants to. It’s her body. Let’s be real feminists!

  10. Thinkaboutit says:

All around bad. Lena looks good? To me she looks like a potato wrapped in sparkly tin foil.

    • Kiddo says:

Now I want a baked potato with broccoli.

    • Rosalie says:

Baaaahahahaha Lena is probably the only woman who I don’t mind straight up bashing. She’s got it coming. And this potato comment just made my day.
She wears stuff that she KNOWs looks bad because she is trolling us, her whole career lately is responding to the negative comments. So obviously she needs to keep generating negative comments by dressing like a damn potato!

    • Peep says:

Please don’t insult potatoes. They have more beauty, grace, and likeability than this sack of garbage.

  11. Renee says:

All of their outfits look kinda budget but I have to give it to Lena for the amount of sparkles on her dress. Lena is giving me a kind of Liza Minelli vibe here. I think that Jemima is very pretty. Allison has Maria Shriver Kennedy energy.

  12. Nev says:

    GORGEOUS!!!!

  13. skyler says:

    FUG. Everyone of them.

  14. marina says:

You can capture this photo in one word: nepotism.

    • Liz says:

Seriously, what is with the “nepotism” accusations directed toward these particular girls? You could say the same thing about most of Hollywood, so what’s the point? What about the Sheens, Douglases, Deschanels, KStew, Angelina Jolie, Drew Barrymore, Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, Baldwins, just to name a few. Most Hollywood people get their starts because of their family connections.

This just smacks of “I have a problem with these girls that I can’t articulate, so I’m going to personally attack them,” which is silly.

      • Leah says:

Very good point Liz. Add to that the gyllenhaals, Paltrows, and several others. Its a bit odd to direct this criticism only at the actresses in Girls.

      • marina says:

I direct it other undewhelming actors and actresses who wouldn’t be where they are without their well connected parents. See: Kate Hudson, Goop, Lily Collins, Emma Roberts… some are actually talented like Bryce Howard, but probably wouldn’t have gotten a chance without her Dad, to be fair), Michael Douglas, Charlie Sheen (a-hole, but talented). Would Ireland Baldwin really be model material if we didn’t know her famous parents? No way! Trust me I could articulate what I don’t like about them just fine, but chose to do it quickly and succinctly.

      • Latisse says:

Do you know what, I HATE lena dunham for so many reasons. But nepotism is not one of them. I mean, I’m sorry, I don’t care if her parents are alt-artists in NYC, that does NOT get you a show on HBO, she did that herself and should get kudos for doing so.

Do you know HOW ANGRY I AM that I had to defend Lena Dunham today. Ugh, why do I even bother to get out of bed in the morning.

    • Cazzee says:

Bingo. There is nothing ‘wow’ about any of these women that would ever make them stand out in an open casting call….so they cleverly avoided that step by choosing their parents wisely.

      Connections for the win!

      • Liz says:

Cazzee, I totally disagree with you. I find Allison and Lena to be really compelling actors. I saw Tiny Furniture, Lena’s first film, before Girls was created, and it was one of my favorite films of the year. Since it was lauded as the hit of that year at a number of film festivals, obviously a lot of people think she’s extremely talented. I live in hipsterville, Seattle and can tell you she captures her generation’s hipsters perfectly.

I wonder if she’s going come out of this show sort of disliking other women. I was in an all-girl band for ten years and the amount of sh-tty comments we got from other women was absolutely astounding. Guys loved us, and girls just tore us apart because we weren’t perfect, they spent a lot of time giving us the stink eye while we played, criticized our matching outfits, which they found too cutesy, and stated if we weren’t cute girls, no one would like us, blah blah blah…It was such crazy, sexist bullshit, I wound up wondering what the hell happened to girls. Now the majority of my friends who like Girls, including my husband, are guys.

I’m not saying women shouldn’t be critical. It’s just that when it comes to assessing the work of other women, they are often so hypercritical and dismissive that there is no room for a female artist to develop. I grew up in the 90’s, when women were way more supportive of and interested in other women.

      • skeptical says:

Liz, i also grew up in the 90s and I see no reason why I must support this spoiled princess. If your goal was to showcase her “talent” i must say i still can’t see it.
She would not be where she is today without constantly using her many connections to her advantage. She deliberately trolls us by wearing dumpy clothes and then screaming “body-shaming” when she is called out on her poor fashion choices. She seems to like playing the victim in the press.
And she INSISTS on casting herself as the lead all the time. As if no one else is worthy of starring in her “art”. And as her “roles” are written by her and seem to be based strongly on her own experiences, I’d hardly say what she does can be called acting. She’s just casting herself to type. She is playing herself, so of course she would appear good at it.
My respect goes to the poor souls struggling at community theaters, who are talented but not connected, trying to make their dreams come true.

Btw above someone referenced a tasteless tweet lena made.. she joked that she could dress up as a victim of Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka (Canadian couple convicted of serial rapes and murders in the early 1990s.) my fave “apology” was when she said her tweet was just a throwaway.. i guess no one should be offended then?

  15. Penelope says:

While Lena looks the best here, not one of them looks knock-out great. In particular, that dress does absolutely nothing for Jemima (the REAL “pretty one” of the group, imo).

    • Sojourner says:

That’s what I’ve been thinking (“the real pretty one”), trying to think how to say it without getting in trouble.

  16. Dani says:

Lena’s dress looks like a sequined tent that you can buy at Modells. Why can’t she stand properly? Why can’t she give a fk? Why can’t she be grateful? So many why’s and not enough answers. Allison looks the best because she’s the only one who probably tired. This show is so overrated. I know it’s supposed to be realistic but I can’t get through five minutes without rolling my eyes.

  17. Tania says:

I’ve seen more than a few quotes from Allison at this point with regards to her styling. I think she puts WAY too much thought into it and she just isn’t at the level of say, someone who should be putting so much thought into it–ex. Bullock, Lawrence, Cotillard, etc. If anything she is only promoting her own stereotype as the vapid pretty girl.

  18. ALJsMom says:

Lena grates on my nerves. Why is she always standing around with her mouth gaping open? She tries sooooo hard to be quirky and different. She is gross

    • Rosalie says:

Exactly. If all you’ve got to set you apart is looking like a gross mess that can’t be bothered to close your damn mouth then you should probably just STOP.

  19. Tiffany says:

Best dressed. Bri Will.I.am. There I said it.

  20. OriginallyBlue says:

    Blah for all of them.

  21. Grant says:

Zosia looks the best to me. I just want to slap everyone else, but that might be because I can’t stand any of them on that god-awful show.

  22. j.eyre says:

I must be broken today because as far as the dresses go, I like all of them. They aren’t necessarily being worn the best, but I like all of them to some degree.

  23. umyeah says:

None of the above please. Tried watching this show once and couldn’t get through a whole episode. Lena needs to fix her posture. Whatever she wears, she looks so frumpy dumpy.

  24. Danskins says:

There are no standouts. They all look equally blah. They are the anti-Sex & the City. I really miss that glamorous show.

  25. smee says:

Jeebus, Lena! It’s not that she looks ugly, it’s just that her dress is so, so wrong for her. I’m certain she fell in love with the fabric, but she needs to look at the total package on her body. I even dislike what I can see of her shoes. Her hair does looks very cute like that. ZM and the satin slip dress – no. Those are hard to pull off and she didn’t make it. The extra shiny fabric looks cheap and it’s unflattering. AW’s dress looks so stiff and tight. Strange lengths and not a great color on her. Make-up or the lighting look harsh. And the black dress didn’t even register with me….too lazy to go back up. For such hip young women they really aren’t doing that well with style.
