Cate Blanchett vs. Lupita Nyong’o: who looked better at the pre-Globes events?

wenn20975333

There were about 20 million pre-Golden Globes events in LA this weekend, and as such, at many events there were only one or two significant people attending. This is just a fashion post for those people. Cate Blanchett attended several events, which is surprising to me because I don’t see her as much of a partier or schmoozer, but maybe she’s running a quiet Oscar campaign this year. Maybe she really does want that lead actress Oscar for Blue Jasmine. Whatever’s happening, I’m glad we’re seeing more of her. This navy gown is Michael Kors – these pics are from the AACTA International Awards on Friday.

And here’s Cate at the 2014 G’DAY USA Los Angeles Black Tie Gala last night. She wore Prabal Gurung – Gurung does a lot of these larger prints, and it can be really hit-or-miss. If I had seen this on someone else, I probably would have hated it. Even now, I think it’s sort of beneath Blanchett. But she comes close to pulling it off.

Here’s Lupita Nyong’o at a Saturday brunch for the 2014 Film Independent Filmmaker Grant And Spirit Awards Nominees. Since it was brunch, I’ll forgive the “dress shorts”. The whole ensemble is Peter Pilotto Resort 2014 – not my favorite look for Lupita, but damn, she can really wear ANYTHING, can’t she?

And here’s Lupita later Saturday at the LA Film Critics Association Awards. She wore Altuzarra’s ‘Marlene’ dress from the Pre-Fall 2014 collection. The dress is sort of Kardashian, but I love Lupita in lighter colors – they really pop off her skin and she looks like a goddess.

Bonus Jared Leto from the LAFCAs – I like his outfit! I like the beard too.

And finally, we have Naomi Watts wearing a sad Marchesa pageant dress at the G’Day event. STOP WEARING MARCHESA.

Lupita’s legs are amazing and I was about to forgive the shorts, but since you posted her in that amazing white dress, I will merely ignore the shorts picture.

I do like Cate’s navy dress but what is going on in the bust? Is that her bra showing through the lining? Bad tailoring or bad fabric for the lining?

  2. smee says:

Kate – flawless as usual, especially the blue dress.
Lupita in that white dress – wowwowowowow! Not loving the shorts outfit.

    • Sullivan says:

Cate looks divine in the dark dress. She pulls off the white print dress as well.

Lupita looks nice in the white.

Naomi, while pretty, is giving off a Miss Havisham vibe.

    • Kate says:

I like Kate in the darker dress also. Not feeling the shorts on Lupita but she made up for the faux pas with that white dress. Looked stunning on her skin

  3. Tessa says:

I think Lupita is perfectly pretty, but the hype about her looks is a little extreme for me. She’s pretty, sure, but I’m not seeing this perfect stunning goddess everyone else is where people lose their shit and weep at her immaculate beauty. I just don’t see it.

    • Ice Maiden says:

I think the word ‘goddess’ is overused – these days it’s used for every pretty girl but imho it should be reserved for striking, statuesque beauties like, say, Charlize Theron, Iman or Cate Blanchett.

That said, Lupita, while maybe not a ‘goddess’, is gorgeous, and the white dress looks fantastic on her. She has a smile which could brighten up the dreariest day.

    • D. says:

@Tessa: This!…yes, thank-you. Really over doing it with the whole Lupita Nyong’o thing. I like her, she’s very pretty and is a pretty good actress but…. sweet Jesus…she is not the second coming. Everyone needs to calm down before you all start hating on her too.

      • Observer says:

Um, a lot of people genuinely think she IS a goddess/perfection itself so…that’s their opinion, just saying, sometimes it’s actually coming from a sincere place.
Anywho, for me she is pretty/stunning/beautiful but one thing that annoys me is the whites of her eyes, they’re yellow and it something I am a little picky about I’ll admit, but it something I can’t help but notice in every photograph of her.

      • christina says:

Odd that you would say that about Lupita yet one of the comments above called Cate Flawless and you say nothing. Is it that you don’t think Lupita all that and you think Cate is.

Are you ok with people thinking Cate, Charlize Theron, Meryl Streep are the second coming? Or do you think it’s over used for everyone.

      • Maria says:

Lupita is beautiful, talented, educated, and humble.

If that’s not goddess material I don’t know what is. Plus, she defies conventional beauty standards and I love that.

Her skin, bone structure, and smile are mesmerizing <3

    • kibbles says:

I somewhat agree. She looks pretty but technically so do most people in Hollywood. I think she is striking in the way Cate Blanchett is as in they have a unique look that is natural and unconventional. I think part of the hype is in part due to the fact that there are so few African women with her darker skin tone who are given any attention or praise in Hollywood. She’s special and rare in an industry that is full of tall and blonde women, many of whom have messed with their face, breasts, and other body parts. I haven’t seen her acting yet, but if she is a good actress, then I don’t have a problem with her.

    • Kiddo says:

She has incredible bone structure, impeccable symmetry in features, beautiful skin and tone, with a nearly flawless body. I don’t understand the part about goddesses needing to be tall, the perspective of the modeling industry has corrupted the concept of length as key to a beauty standard, but whatever. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, although scientific studies do indicate a consensus on beauty when presented with subjects who have a higher degree of symmetry.

      • Ice Maiden says:

I’m not saying that height has anything to do with beauty, just that when I picture a ‘goddess’, I visualise someone very tall and very striking, even if not necessarily beautiful. I just think the word is thrown around a bit too casually these days – any famous woman who’s not ugly (which is to say almost all of them) is a ‘goddess’.

    • ANDREA1 says:

@Tessa I agree completely not only Lupita even Cate. These two women have been overhyped by CB and I just don’t get it. They are both gorgeous but goddesses? No way.

    • Tatiana says:

I find Lupita absolutely beautiful, poised and stunning.

    • Valois says:

I don’t see it either. To each their own I guess.

      • ncmagnolia says:

Seriously, I don’t either. I know Lupita is the “hot young thing” now, but I just don’t understand.

For me, it’s Cate. Always, always, Goddess Cate.

    • Stef Leppard says:

Lupita is special because she has a flawless face and body AND a flawless fashion sense. Plus she’s so elegant. I don’t know, I think she stands out from the rest of the Hollywood starlets.

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

I can’t get over the fact that she’s THIRTY. She looks young…….like ‘wet behind the ears’ young.

      • Spooks says:

I actually think she’s beautiful, but her fashion sense is soooo overhyped. I haven’t seen her in anything spectacular. Everything has been so basic. And I hate this white dress. It’s to cheap looking for her.

      • Ice Maiden says:

@virgilia I was shocked to hear that too. If I had to guess her age based on her appearance, I’d have guessed she was a teenager. And not even late teens. Mid-teens. She does look older in the white dress, but in the other photos she really looks very girlish.

    • Alexis says:

I do. There’s just something memorable and sweet about her face. And her skin is so stunning! YMMV.

  4. Kiddo says:

I love the blue on Cate, the style, especially as a departure from beige. But what’s going on with the rumples up near the shoulders and armpits? The dress is falling oddly there. But overall is gorgeous.

I’m waiting for Jared Leto to break into an impromptu tap dance, or to spontaneously toss out jazz hands.

  5. Nev says:

    Jared’s shoes so happening!!!!!

  6. lisa2 says:

They both look better in their second outfits. The first on both are misses for me.

  7. GeeMoney says:

Naomi Watts’ dress is pretty. And so is the white one that Cate has on in the second pic.

    Jared Leto looks ridiculous.

Lupita should have checked the mirror more than once for that shorts outfit. I like her and all, but that outfit is fug. The pic of her in the white dress is nice, though.

  8. Renee says:

I like Cate in the smoky blue, the pink 80s thing does not complement her skin tone AT ALL. I don’t mind Lupita in the shorts ensemble but the white shoes have got to go. Also, I’m not sure how I feel about her lipstick shade.

  9. merski says:

OH NO NAOMI!!!!! She usually has such a perfect style, I just can’t believe she is wearing Marchesa! Ugh. Someone must have forced her. Like, she had to wear it in exchange for a leading part in a Weinstein produced movie. Because there is no other explanation for this…

    • Stef Leppard says:

Naomi’s dress looks like lingerie that has started to mold.

She’s worn Marchesa before. Remember she wore that hideous white Marchesa dress to a Diana premiere?

      • merski says:

Christ, yes, I totally forgot that. And that was recently. See? I smell a Weinstein-conspiracy! 😉

  10. Cecilia says:

Cate is always stunning & on the cutting edge. Love her. Lupita looks dreadful in the shorts outfit. The white dress is ok but I just don’t get the hype about Lupita. Nice smile, but overall meh to me.

  11. Vera says:

I adore that blue dress on Cate, and Jared must have a photo of Dorian Grey somewhere. He just turned 42. As for Lupita, I think she ‘s gorgeous with flawless skin, and if I’m losing my mind a little by seeing a beautiful black actress in designer clothes, so be it.

  12. Tatiana says:

Cate looks amazing in the second prabal grunt dress. It gorgeous and so her. Lupita also looks gorgeous, specially in the white one. Naomi is the only that looks bad, I mean that dress is horrible.

  13. Esmom says:

Love both of Cate’s looks and both of Lupita’s too, even the formal shorts. I think my favorite is Cate’s second look. I can’t imagine anyone else pulling that off so amazingly.

  14. Decloo says:

This whole post looks like a ‘worst-dressed” list to me. Cate’s Michael Kors is pretty, if you are going to a funeral. The shoes are ridiculous. The shiny Oriental thing looks like it came from one of those Chinese websites for $35. The rest of it….just awful. Awful.

  15. lucy2 says:

Cate and Lupita are two women where it doesn’t matter what they’re wearing, they just always look poised and lovely. I do like Cate’s blue and Lupita’s white dresses.
Naomi, what is happening there? No more Marchesa!

  16. TheCountess says:

The Kors dress gives Cate headlight boobs.

I loathe Pilotto in general, and that shorts getup does nothing to persuade me otherwise. Yet somehow, Lupita is still slamming in it. And the Marlene dress? Needle-on-record-scratchingly gorgeous. Lupita for the win.

  17. Sumodo1 says:

I am not liking any of these looks. Jared Leto’s a big fashion no-no. The shoes! The shoesssss!

  18. Chloe says:

I actually really like the Prabal dress that Cate is wearing, if it was just white it would wash her out the but the color makes her pop, plus I like her with her hair down. I like Lupita’s white dress, the Kardashian comment made me laugh, because Kim K would probably look okay in that dress too if she would wear it 4 sizes to small to show off her plastic parts.

  19. 4EvaRedd says:

Adore Cate! Love her as a redhead most!

  20. Zimmer says:

To whoever said they are surprised Lupita is 30, so am I. She looks 15! Great genes for sure! I hope to see a lot more roles with her.

  21. Mingy says:

I thought Cate was amazing in Blue Jasmine! I was in awe of her performance.. Just. Wow.

And that Lupita is working the hell out of that white dress.

  22. lisa says:

CB, really, there is no Kardashian who could come close to looking as good in that white dress as Lupita,
For me, I think both Cate and Lupita have a presence, a style, a carriage, which elevates whatever they are wearing to a piece of art. They both have worn some not so attractive outfits, but both seem to somehow make it work.

    • Sachi says:

      I agree with this.

Nothing more to add about Cate. Just flawless.

Lupita has a face that looks…serene, like she is not burdened by every day struggles. That doesn’t mean she isn’t, but it’s just how she looks IMO. There isn’t any artifice and pretense on her face and her demeanour. Her whole aura is radiant and she has a quiet confidence and poise that makes her very different from many celebs who overdo the red carpet and their outfits/appearances in general. Lupita is herself, I can’t see much that is Hollywood-manufactured about her.
