Sandra Bullock in Prabal Gurung at the Golden Globes: bad ball gown or striking?

Sandra Bullock had one of the most memorable gown at last night’s Golden Globes and not for a good reason. She was in color block Prabal Gurung, who was also responsible for Zoe Saldana’s monstrosity of a dress, which Bedhead will cover shortly. Bullock’s gown reminded me of Anne Hathaway’s last minute Oscar change last year, in that the dress was sewn with darts that lined up just perfectly over her nips. On camera, Bullock was nipping out all over. Don’t they make pasties to take care of that? I don’t understand how a whole team of people could have signed off on this look. This dress is pink, black and blue, it makes no sense.

In terms of Sandra’s styling, her makeup was perfect and I liked that she switched up her hair. She’s been really bringing her style game this year. Sandra’s extensions looked a bit fake and too-long, but otherwise she was gorgeous. That’s a good thing, because this fug dress would have been much worse with bad styling. Oh and she was up for best actress, for Gravity, which went to Cate Blanchett for Blue Jasmine. (Full list of winners is here.)

Hayden Panettiere was one of the first arrivals on the red carpet last night, and she was also one of the worst styled. She was in Tom Ford, in a forgettable little black and white gown that hung limply, just like her slicked-back hair. Hayden was up for supporting TV actress, for Nashville, which went to Jacqueline Bisset. Bisset was visibly shaken when she accepted her award, dropping an S-bomb and saying that her mom used to say “Go to hell and don’t come back.”

Also suffering from bad styling and an underwhelming dress is Orange is The New Black’s Taylor Schilling, in Thakoon. I find Taylor so pretty on that highly watchable series, and I would have loved to see her bring more glamour to the Globes. Instead she wore a green dress that looked like a nightie and sported loud, messy makeup. Taylor needs new people! Taylor lost out for best TV actress to Robin Wright.

As a palette cleanser, here’s Julianna Margulies in black and gold Andrew Gn. In photos this dress looks a bit too formal and fussy, but on camera it was perfect. I also loved Julianna’s simple styling and her amazing Van Cleef drop earrings. Julianna was also nominated in the best TV actress category.

Finally here’s Anna Gunn of Breaking Bad in Donna Karan. This champagne colored dress fits her beautifully, but I would have liked to see more color on Anna. This look is very washed out. Also, where was Marie/Betsy Brandt? She and Dean Norris should have scored an invite.

JMarguilles was my best dress of the night, tied with Hellen Mirren. That said, I like Sandra Bullock’s dress as well. It’s unusual in all sorts of right ways, without trying too hard. Eeeeeven though I liked Diane Kruger’s execution of this dress (in black, white and red) better >.< And I like Taylor's dress – minus the lace bit on top, I adore that slinky 1930s vibe. Lots of love for this post, is what I'm saying!

  2. Wiffie says:

Ugh, sandy. No. gahh, it’s so bad. Her face is beautiful, and that dress gives her this shape that’s just ODD. NO!! and the darts? I just can’t…

  3. Bshg says:

Hayden has a very peculiar body shape and that dress did not do her any favor. It made her arms look stumpy and flattened out her chest. She looked pretty bad.

    • lucy2 says:

I agree – I’d like this dress on someone else probably, but I don’t think the lines were right for her.

    • Terae says:

I agree… She looks stumpy And like a flattened out column… Some curve-inducing cinching in the dress might have worked but I the first thing I wondered was, didn’t she just in the past year get a new set of bolt-ons? She seems like the type who would be showing those puppies off

  4. serena says:

I absolutely love Sandra’s dress but please.. take care of the nipples! I mean, how difficult can it be to cover ’em up properly? UGH!

  5. Rhea says:

Lately Bullock seems to be in the mood wearing a gown that has a mixed of pink colour in it…. Not a fan of this look—the material make it seems…idk, cheap? Doesn’t really look like red carpet worthy.

  6. len says:

Yesss, Margulies was my best dressed. Absolutely gorgeous.

    • Esmom says:

She looked like royalty to me. She really blew the doors off the place with that look. I liked Sandra’s, too, and thought her hair and makeup were perfection.

  7. blue marie says:

I didn’t realize Sandra has extensions? I don’t like the dress.
    Julianna almost always looks beautiful.

    • Hannah says:

I don’t think Sandra wears extensions. That hair looks pretty real to me.

    • Esmom says:

Maybe just the ponytail? It did look longer than her hair has looked lately when it’s down. Didn’t bug me though, it looked natural.

  8. Hannah says:

I can’t quite believe that Hayden’s dress is Tom Ford. It looks quite cheap and pedestrian. Not that I’m a big fan of TF but his stuff usually looks pretty high-end.

  9. Kiddo says:

Sandra Bullock, for some reason, (other than the leaf dress the other day) always appears to be wearing color combinations that would better suit sportswear or activewear/workout gear in her dressy clothing. It doesn’t appeal to me. I suppose it’s nice that she switched it up from her standard tight dress mode, but this dress doesn’t look sewn well. Does that make sense? It came out of the sporting section of David’s Bridal.

Julianna Margulies’ dress reminds me of high end wrapping paper. It’s beautiful, but at the same time, I’m torn about it. It is a bit heavy, but I think she did carry it off.

Anna Gunn looked like Venus in that dress. I still can’t get over how much more beautiful she is in real life as opposed to how she looked in Breaking bad. I think the pale color worked for her.

    • Esmom says:

Agree about Anna Gunn. They really did play down her looks in the show, didn’t they?

      • Kiddo says:

It makes me realize how the authenticity of the character was more important to her than vanity. She really is an actress instead of just being a star.

    • gogoGorilla says:

Oh, thank god. I thought I was the only one who is not frothing at the mouth over JM’s dress. All I see are giant gold snowflakes. Do not like.

I don’t mind Sandra doing the color blocking, but this dress is just weird. The shape is off and it looks like it doesn’t fit. If you just look at the top, it’s not bad, but when you factor in the bottom… just, no.

      Anna Gunn looks gorgeous.

  10. Faye says:

I thought Julianna looked the best of all the ladies here. The gown was simple but beautifully cut. And she came with the best accessory of all – her dishy husband :).

I actually found Sandra Bullock’s gown kind of interesting. And her makeup and hair were fabulous.

  11. chloe says:

I like Sandra’s stile of dress except for the Colorado blocking and the ends of her hair looks dry and brittle. Julianne’s dress and hair is one of my favorites of the night. I hate Hayden’s slicked back hair.

  12. Bianca says:

Julianna Margulies looks absolutely stunning. A very striking look!

  13. mellie says:

Love Julianna and the dress, love Sandra, the dress meh…Hayden…love the dress, the hair and face just look greasy and dirty…enough with the greased back hair and pony tails…I want pretty updo’s and beautiful poofy curls…I’m from the midwest…big hair please! haha.

  14. L says:

The gossip about Hayden’s dress was hilarious. Someone from E tweeted that “Tom Ford just confirmed that he ONLY dressed Naomi Watts for the event. Hayden P. purchased her dress retail”

  15. Nicolette says:

Sandra’s hair and makeup look lovely and the dress itself looks comfortable to wear, but I’m not a fan of that color blocking.

  16. Abby says:

Sandra’s hair was my fave of the night. Beautiful.

  17. Tig says:

Sandra’s makeup and hair were great/ the dress, not so much. Pointy satin-y nipples- thought Anne H’s dress disaster last year would save us from more, but evidently not.

JM’s dress was a stunner/ she can really carry off dramatic dresses,

  18. JudyK says:

When I first saw Sandra’s dress, I thought, “Oh no”…but the more I look at it, the more I like it, except she needed a satin pointed-toe pump with it, not the damned ankle straps.

Julianna Margulies…OMG, I think I have a girl crush. She looks like royalty.

  19. lisa2 says:

I just didn’t like Sandra’s dress. I don’t want to see any more color blocking. I know her hair is straight.. but it looked too flat even in that style.

  20. Dani says:

Loveeee Sandra’s dress. Love her in general. She can do no wrong.

  21. Grant says:

    Loved Sandy’s look.

  22. flutters says:

I like the idea of Sandra’s dress and I love the outer outline of it. I feel like if the colors were a little different and the chest area a little better rendered, I would have loved her look. But still not bad and her hair & makeup are lovely. I agree with those who say Diane Kruger’s dress executed the idea of Sandra’s dress better.

Julianna Marguilles’s dress definitely didn’t photograph as well as it looked but it’s lovely. I also love the shape of Anna Gunn’s dress though I’m compelled to agree that the color is a little pale for her.

  23. Mara says:

Sandra could do no wrong she looks beautiful.

  24. GIRLFACE says:

Eeesh! I don’t like any of these. Anna looks the best by far. Sandra’s makeup is pretty but that dress is not.

  25. Diana says:

That. Styling. Perfection. And, I like the dress.

  26. Cricket says:

Taylor Schilling looks like she followed the Middleton women’s make up routine.

Agree JM looks classic and beautiful.

Sandra’s dress, didn’t like the pink and the darts, or the hair.

    • Decloo says:

Taylor looks seriously awful. The dress looks like a cheap night gown and the makeup is a “Dynasty” throwback.

  27. JenniferJustice says:

I dont’ care for Sandra’s dress. I like it better on Diane Kruger – the neck is better on Kruger’s. That plunging neckline on Sandra is not flattering. She has no cleavage, so we’re left with alot of clavical. Don’t care for the color blocking either. Love Juliann’s dress. She is so regal and always a pleasant surprise when it comes to style. Hayden needs to stop with the body suit dresses. She’s always seems to be trying to show off a banging body, but she too think and broad-shouldered. She should try something softer and more feminine…just once, try it.

  28. Maple Goodness says:

    I love you Sandra!!!

Sandra looked just beautiful and I like the dress! I could just stare at her and stare at her… She is totally my girl crush!!

  29. Jessica says:

Sandra’s dress, with the light pink and light blue, looked like a baby shower. “What are we having, you have to guess! And then we’ll do a reveal with a stupid cake colored with the baby’s gender.”
