Kerry Washington in maternity Balenciaga at the Globes: gorgeous & glowing?

wenn20983421

Kerry Washington made my list for Best Dressed of the Golden Globes. It was partly because I genuinely thought her Balenciaga maternity gown was pretty, and partly because Kerry was just so happy and giggly and bubbly throughout the whole evening. She just looked like she was having the best time, and that helps when you’re working a gown. As for this Balenciaga… it photographs in a weird way, I think. On E!’s red carpet, it looked like a pale, greyish seafoam green, but in these photos, it looks like an off-white. Also: Kerry’s pregnancy hormones and some slight weight gain have made Kerry look drop-dead gorgeous. Her skin is glowing, her hair is gorgeous, her body looks amazing. This was one of her best red carpets ever.

Speaking of “Best Of…”, here we have Emma Thompson in vintage Lanvin, with her daughter Gaia Wise as her date. Emma was either three-sheets to the wind BEFORE she even arrived, or she quickly chugged six cocktails upon arriving, because Emma was having a ball the whole time. I love that the HFPA always puts Emma in the front, because she’s always standing to clap, shouting words of encouragement to whomever’s on stage, giving the best reaction shots and generally just being the best awards-show attendee ever. I loved her bit with the Louboutins and the cocktail, but I actually dislike this dress a lot. It’s not good.

I think if Emma’s dress had been entirely made of the gold part, and floor length, she’d have knocked it out of the park. This… meh.

    • Spooks says:

I usually LOVE Emma, but her mock-drunk act was a bit cringeworthy. Her daughter is very pretty.

    • Nastja says:

Emma always has to be the center of attention. And she taking the eccentric English lady a bit to far. She obviously has a very very high opinion of herself.
And as someone said, her daughter looks smug.

      • Anna says:

Lol, actually she’s one of the few in Hollywood who DOESN’T have a high opinion of herself, or her profession.

  2. Leah says:

    Kerry looks stunning.

  3. LadyMTL says:

I wasn’t crazy about Kerry Washington’s dress. On TV it came across as this weird oatmeal-y color and I did not like the fact that the top half basically looks like a napkin held closed with a pin. I think Olivia Wilde looks miiiiiiles better, tbh.

    • Anna says:

Wilde looked how I would dream to look preggers and on a red carpet. She showed…everybody!

    • Stef Leppard says:

Agreed. Olivia looked stunning. Kerry’s skin and hair did look good, but I thought this dress was kind of frumpy.

    • lunchcoma says:

I didn’t love Kerry’s dress, either. It’s fine but rather bland, and I’m not going to squee all over it just because she’s pregnant. Oliva’s dress knocked it out of the park – much more interesting.

    • Another Ann says:

Kerry looked lovely, but the dress itself was a bit boring. Very Wang, very minimalist and dull.

      • LeLe25 says:

I’m not a big fan of Kerry’s red carpet style, but I thought this dress was okay.

Her hair on the other hand really bothers me. It is always so flat on the red carpet, and I think she has the kind is face that needs volume. Kerry please let your lovely hair breathe a little and try a cloth flat iron.

That said, she is a beautiful woman, and even more stunning now that she’s pregnant.

  4. Kristen says:

    Emma’s daughter is very pretty.

  5. harpreet says:

Emma’s daughter looks like Ireland Baldwin, no?

As for Kerry’s Balenciaga, I always have thought Balenciaga’s structure and shapes of dresses were perfect for maternity wear. She looked lovely.

  6. Marianne says:

Didnt like Kerry’s dress. Looked like she was wearing a vest.

Emma Thompson also had an ugly dress. But she was a total hoot during the telecast.

  7. Anna says:

I am totally not digging Kerry Washington’s dress and all that belly-cupping. Olivia Pope is better than that.

    • AG-UK says:

      @Anna
Yes why do pregnant women and their partners feel they need to hold the belly in photos. I mean we know she is pregnant. I think Kerry looks lovely her face is so pretty and she does glow.

      • Ice Maiden says:

LOL! That was my first thought too. So you’re pregnant, just like millions of women around the world. We get it.

It’s even worse in films and TV. Any character who is pregnant is doomed to spend every scene either holding her prosthetic bump or putting her two hands on the small of her back and leaning backwards with a sigh. Meanwhile in the real world, pregnant women just get on with it.

      • jaye says:

It’s probably because photographers are shouting “Show us your bump!”. I’m sure she doesn’t walk around bump cupping all day long. And if she did, so what?

      • Lucinda says:

I did it for two reasons. At first it was completely unconscious. If I was thinking about the baby, my had went to my belly. When I got further along, it was to hold my tummy. That weigh stretches and the extra support of your hand is comfortable. It’s not all about vanity. Obviously every woman is different. That was just me.

    • gaggles says:

Why is belly cupping such a big deal? I don’t get why it’s an offense.

    • Dingo says:

Pope always nails it – Washington not so much.

    • lenje says:

I’ve never been pregnant, and I don’t find that offensive AT ALL. I also remember it was discussed here a while ago, and some commentators said it was comfortable for pregnant ladies to belly cup.

This said, I like Kerry’s dress. Olivia looks fantastic, and Drew is definitely glowing.

      • jaye says:

Yeah, I think most women’s hands just end up there. I know I did my fair share of bump cupping when I was pregnant because I was just excited that there was a PERSON in mah belly! lol. I loved putting my hands on my bump and feel my baby moving around in there.

      • Another Ann says:

When the baby starts moving, it’s almost impossible not to put your hand on your stomach. It’s like an instinct. Plus, if the baby is kicking or pushing out, it sometimes feels better to have your hand there.

  8. Dani says:

I really like Emma but I think the whole throwing the Loubs over her shoulder thing was a bit much.

  9. eliza says:

I am a big fan of Matthew and his wife. They strike me as a nice pair who enjoy their life together. I have really grown to appreciate him as an actor. He takes some risks with characters and I really love him for it. Glad he won last night. He deserves some recognition.

    • Pandy says:

I was just thinking that Camilla Alves looks like she could use a good slap across the face. Always with the “moody” posing.

  10. blue marie says:

Ha ha, love the last photo of Emma with Matthew, awesome.
I would like Emma’s dress better if it were longer, and her daughter is a pretty girl.
Kerry looks really good. Did she bring her husband?

  11. bsh says:

I don’t get the hate about the belly-cupping. Lainey has been pretty vocal about it and she sounds just bitchy. Sure, some celebrities abuse it cause they have a “look at me! I am carrying a baby, I am so special!” attitude, but aren’t we a bit too harsh? Isn’t a woman allowed to proudly show her state in an appropriate way?? Kerry Washington is not a famewhore, she’s a beautiful, talented artist who has nothing to prove! Plus, I think in many cases it’s just an instinctive gesture. I am not even pregnant and I cup my belly all the time, especially after a big meal, just to check how much of it it’s showing!! 🙂

    • Ellen says:

      ITA.

Some pregnant women are super-glowy and aware of the fact that they are at an event with another person INSIDE them. If I were a nominee AND I were pregnant, it would feel like, “I am at this super-cool event and this will be quite the story to share with the baby someday.” I would probably belly-cup without even realizing I was doing it. Lainey needs to chill.

    • elisa says:

I don’t get the hate over belly-cupping either. I think it is instinctual too. When I was pregnant, I did that all the time, and I wasn’t even aware of it until my mom pointed it out. I don’t think it is showing off or anything like that. You are just in love with your baby and hugging him/her. At least that is the way it was for me.

I loved Kerry’s dress. It came across as a very pretty cream colour on my screen. She looked stunning.

Loved Olivia Wilde’s dress as well. Both women looked gorgeous.

    • Mingy says:

Lainey hates everything pregnancy or kid related…

  12. GlimmerBunny says:

Loved both Kerry’s and Olivia Wilde’s dresses. Pregnancy does make them both (even more) stunning!

  13. Amy says:

Admit it, of all the people in that ballroom, isn’t Emma the one you’d like to be sitting by? You know her table scored extra booze (even if they had to steal some from another table) and she’d make sure your wine glass was never empty. Compare that to sitting at, say, Goop’s table.

    • elisa says:

She always looks like she is having fun no matter where she goes. She is one of the few celebrities that I always say seems like fun in real life.

    • Lisa says:

I always want to hang with Emma. Sitting at Goop’s table, I’d just want to be hanged.

  14. Grant says:

I thought Kerry’s hair looked kind of thin and lifeless, especially as the night went on.

  15. LAK says:

The amount of weight Kerry’s put on relative to her original weight is huge. She was skeletal pre-pregnancy.

If she were a regular person instead of a hollywood person, i’d say she’s barely put on any weight because she would probably not be as skeletal as she’s been for the past few years.

  16. Lexie says:

I don’t get the belly-cupping hate either. I’m pregnant and I often hold my belly without even realizing it. I guess it’s part “Oh wow, where did this come from?” Like suddenly having an extra appendage so you keep touching it. And the other part is just protective. If a horde of photogs surrounded me, it would be instinct to put some sort of shield up, as weird as it sounds.

    • Malificent says:

Yup, it is instinctive. I belly cupped all the time — even when there was no one around to see it. It’s kind of like checking in on your little buddy. And later in my pregnancy, my kid was frightened of loud noises and would kick. His little butt stuck out, so I would rub it in an attempt too soothe him….

  17. Sisi says:

the bust part of Kerry’s dress is horrendous. It’s straight at the front and pointy at the top. total shame, because the person wearing that tailoring disaster is has never looked so beautiful imo.

  18. Janet says:

Watson’s dress doesn’t work because the length is all wrong. Floor length would have been much better. That length just made her look dowdy.

  19. Jess says:

Kerry was beautiful but her dress was beyond boring. And I love Emma too but her dress was not great. Meanwhile, I don’t get the belly cupping hate either. I never did that when pregnant but I always rested my hands on top of my belly when pregnant.

  20. Fan says:

Gorgeous, the best maternity dress that I have ever seen.

  21. Kiddo says:

Emma’s dress was awful and she overplayed the drunk Brit bit, but I still like her.

  22. jaye says:

I think Kerry and her dress looked lovely. That last pic w/Emma Thompson and Matthew McConaughy and his wife made me smile.

  23. Holly says:

Something funky was going on with the darting on Kerry’s dress. It was fine otherwise, but just not well fitted.

  24. P.J. says:

Speaking of being totally destroyed on the red carpet, did anyone else react the same way I did to Hayden Panettiere’s totally BIZARRE red carpet interview with Carson Daly? It was so awkward and uncomfortable!! (The poor guy.) She could barely answer his really mild questions, was squinting and taking extremely long pauses between his asking and her answering…just so, so bad.

I suspect that someone was hitting up the green in a BIG way before arriving! Funny but still, not.good.

Also, I agree with everything said it the post about Kerry 🙂 I’m thrilled that she finally (publicly) acknowledged her pregnancy and the extra weight looks beautiful on her. (If anyone else remembers, this is more along the lines of Kerry’s natural figure from most of her career. She’s said that several years ago she began Pilates and cut out sugar, alcohol, processed carbs more and lost a TON of-maybe too much-weight. She recently adopted the Hollywood “lollipop” look and I think it was too much.) So happy for her and her hubby! Hope it’s a girl ❤

  25. BettyBlue says:

    Totally agree.

  26. mrsmc says:

I liked Kerry dress also I think it is nice to see a celebrity who truly looks happy for once.

  27. Lisa says:

I love Emma, and her daughter looks so much like her dad! (Greg Wise, forever that weak reed, Willoughby, of Sense and Sensibility)
