Jennifer Lawrence says she kissed ‘Fatman’ instead of ‘Batman’: rude or funny?

Jennifer Lawrence

I just noticed that Christian Bale didn’t turn up at Sunday evening’s Golden Globes despite being nominated in one of the Best Actor categories for his role in American Hustle. His two female co-stars, Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams, cleaned up in their categories. I guess Christian was busy doing something else. Too bad.

I’m not really here to knock on Bale, and I’m not planning on knocking on Jennifer either despite the headline to this post. Well I am calling her out at least a little bit. These JLaw blinders make me feel extra guilty if I don’t notice when she does screw up. Remember not too long ago when Jennifer very earnestly told Barbara Walters that fat shaming should be regulated? She specifically said, “it should be illegal to call somebody fat.” At the time, most of you were like, “Dream on,” and I agree. The government can’t regulate people acting like a-holes and saying a-holish things. I am very much against fat shaming, but I also recognize that dealing with a-holes is a part of life.

Anyway, I think fat shamers should be shamed, which is why I did appreciate JLaw’s attitude when she called out the Fashion Police crowd. Aaand now JLaw has gone and described Christian Bale as “Fatman” because he gained weight for American Hustle. Ooooh boy:

What a missed opportunity! Jennifer Lawrence may have been lucky enough to smooch Christian Bale in the Golden Globe-nominated film American Hustle, but director David O. Russell admits it wasn’t exactly how she pictured it. During the Australian Academy of Cinema & Television Arts Awards in West Hollywood Friday night, the director told Us Weekly what the Oscar winner really thought about kissing him.

“‘I finally get to make out with Christian Bale and he’s a really fat guy,'” Russell recalled Lawrence, 23, saying while filming the crime drama. She said: “‘He’s Fatman, not Batman.'” (In 2012, Bale showed off a much more muscular, toned physique when he played Bruce Wayne in The Dark Knight Rises.)

[From Us Weekly]

Christian Bale probably didn’t care at all about JLaw saying this because he purposely gained weight for this role. He willingly packed on a gut, but this is a chink in Jennifer’s teflon if she thinks she can toss around “Fatman” and not look hypocritical. When she spoke to Walters, JLaw admitted, “I get it, and, and I do it too, we all do it. [But] the media needs to take responsibility for the effect that it has on our younger generation, on these girls who are watching these television shows, and picking up how to talk and how to be cool.” Lots of young girls look up to Jennifer Lawrence (as Katniss and as the actress) and think she’s super cool. What I’m saying is this — JLaw needs to watch her mouth and not let this happen again. The internet almost universally adores her, but it won’t take much to turn that tide.

I wouldn’t say it’s bad per-se but given all her commenting on weight and Hollywoods obsession with it, it is a little bit of a case of foot in mouth.
If you’re going to take a strong stance on something then you have to follow through in all aspects.
I do think she meant it more as a joke rather than a social commentary though.

    • mom2two says:

I agree. Because of all of her earlier talk, people will call her out on this.

    • Azurea says:

To be fair, she didn’t say it publicly. The article attributes the quote to David O. Russell, so who knows if she said it. He might have dreamed that up as a fun story.

      • Tiffany :) says:

Exactly my thoughts. We don’t know the exact phrase she used. If she said the word “Fatman”.

      • The Wizz says:

Exactly, a fair chance the director paraphrased her…I do that all the time. Unfortunately the director probably innocently didn’t realise how diabolical using the word “fat” is in this context because of JLaws previous comments.

    • Lindy79 says:

Valid point. It’s the kind of thing I could imagine her saying in a jokey way but any articles on this, he’s repeating what she said.
David O’Russell really should stop talking on her behalf or repeating private conversations in a public forum. Between this and the 12 years a slave thing below, he’s doing her no favours at all.

    • TSwise says:

You don’t think that they’re telling jokes on Fashion Police? (I have actually never heard any of the hosts on FP call anyone but Christina Aguilera fat, and that was because she did it first. I use FP as an example only because that was who Jennifer used as her example.) Why are Jennifer’s jokes more okay to tell than Joan Rivers’ jokes?

      • Spooks says:

YES! I watch FP quite a lot and they never comment bodies, only clothes.

      • JessMa says:

The difference is that FP is on national television for an audience. Here Jen is talking to one person in private using an inside joke/nickname the cast and crew has been using on set. Furthermore Bale is not fat, this is just movie weight. It is hard to fat shame a good looking fit guy. It is not like she was talking about Seth Rogan or Jonah Hill. Regardless fat men in Hollywood get a pass. Fat guys get the roles and the hot girls. It is women probably 95% of the time that are given a hard time about their weight in Hollywood and in real life.

      • Ally8 says:

Yeah, but they do use code. “She should dress to flatter her body type” is invariably used for curvier women, i.e. ladies larger than a US size 4 should only wear one kind of dress, one that hides their unseemly flesh from us!

All pretty ripe coming from three women with obvious body image issues.

    • Yep says:

It’s just because of her earlier talk that I find this messed up.

  2. nicegirl says:

I’m not sure about the adoration part, nor do I think it is super cool to call someone fat when you are speaking out against fat shaming. That is definitely hypocritical. It may be a rumor, but I think I may have heard she also called Val Kilmer fat?

    • V4Real says:

      You heard right.

    • Lindy79 says:

I was on the Globes Instagram page, who were posting pictures as people were arriving and I was shocked at the level of people *ahem young girls* commenting on EVERY SINGLE picture with variations of:

      “WHERE IS J-LAW??”
“WE DON’T CARE ABOUT ANY OF THESE PEOPLE!! We want JLAW!!”
“why are you not posting pictures of Jennifer!?”

I was *this* close to replying “because she clearly hasn’t arrived yet you bloody tool so calm down! and have a bit of respect for the other people attending!”

It summarised everything that is wrong with the internet.

    • bns says:

Yeah, she made a joke about Val Kilmer’s weight in an interview once.

    • Sullivan says:

It’s a good thing America’s Sweetheart said it and not Jay Mohr.

      • V4Real says:

        LOL!

      • JessMa says:

Jay said it for a national audience to put her down and joke at her expense. Jen made a comment to one person using a nickname the cast and crew used. Bale is not fat and joked about the nickname.

  3. Jenns says:

To be fair, Christian Bale gave an interview back when he was promoting Batman Begins where he said that the crew jokingly called him “Fatman” instead of “Batman”, because he gained weight for the role, but not muscle tone.

I’m just wondering if she is repeating that joke.

    • m says:

Probably. Plus, see was talking about the character not the actor, two totally different things.

      • meh says:

It’s true it wasn’t a personal dig at Bale, but the message is still, “kissing a fat person is not hot. This person was hot but then they got fat so they aren’t anymore.”

I mean, come on, if you want “the media” to take responsibility for the messages it sends about bodies and weight, start with yourself.

      • meh says:

Eek. Sorry about the double post

      • JessMa says:

She not the media nor was she sending a message. It was a joke to one person. One. Person. You should be able to joke around with your friends without having to be censored. Especially if you are using and inside joke that the cast and crew, including Bale, are all a participating in.

    • emmie_a says:

Just bc the rest of the crew said it doesn’t mean anything or give her an excuse.

I guess Jennifer just doesn’t want the media or the general public to call HER fat. Everyone else is fair game.

      • JessMa says:

It actually does. If the cast and crew, including Bale, have an inside joke that is their business. Not to mention Bale is not really fat or offended. He also seems super friendly with her and has publicly praised her. I think they are totally fine.

  4. Tapioca says:

    Dear Jennifer,

Please stop talking whilst people still like you.

    Love & hugs,

    The People xx

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Ha! It’s too late for me, I’m afraid. I’m tired of her.

    • Florc says:

It’s getting harder to like her…
Although Jenns above does make a good point, JLaw still just got off an interview where she talked about fatshaming. The internet can easily take her quote out of context and blow it up so big it does real damage to her fan base.

  5. Maya says:

I personally feel that winning that Oscar last year has gone to Jennifer’s head. These days she comes of condescending, know it all, preachy person – kind of like Gwyneth but in a more subtle way.

PS: and yes she is sounding hypocritical with the comment about Fatman. She could have said something else as the reason for not wanting to kiss Christian Bale’s character instead of focusing it on the weight.

    • Leah says:

I actually read somewhere that the reason Jlaw is so “preachy” as you call it with regards to weight is because she had a stylist that pressured her to loose weight early on in her career. She was basically told that the designers didn’t make samples in her size etc. She was made to feel insecure about her weight and don’t forget how young she was and still is, its bound have made her feel insecure. So i can’t compare that to 40 year old Gwyneth. I do agree about the fatman comment. That sounds like an in joke between the actors on AH ( There was story that the crew named him Fatman) and it should have stayed there.

      • don't kill me i'm french says:

Just imagine if it was Bale who had said that he didn’t want to kiss an actress because she was fat
        #DoubleStandard

    • Nastja says:

She did lose a lot of weight in the past 2 years.

    • JessMa says:

It was a joke to one person. An inside joke the cast and crew were using. Also French, where does it say she didn’t want to kiss him? This is turning in to a crazy game of telephone. She joked around with Russell, he repeats his version in an interview, and now people are distorting what he said. Crazy.

  6. doofus says:

I don’t like that she said it, but…

…she could have been referencing his nickname from the set of the first Batman movie he did.

from what I remember, the crew nicknamed him “Fatman” because he packed on so much bulk for that role that he had trouble fitting into the Batman suit at first. so, it could have been a joke between them on set, but I still think it was perpetuating the fat shaming she is against.

    • lucy2 says:

Agreed – I would be curious of the context, especially since we are hearing it 2nd hand to begin with. My guess is it was a running joke on set, not meant maliciously, but who knows.
Without more context, it does sound hypocritical, since she has been speaking on the subject so much.

  7. V4Real says:

I’m beginning to think it will not take long before people start to tire of JLaw’s beer guzzling down to earth, girl next door schtick.

It’s not ok to fat shame people unless you’re joking about it is how she’s coming off. The word fat should be illegal but you call Bale Fatman. Yep what a way to stick your Oscar winning Golden Globe foot in your mouth.

    • JessMa says:

Way to misquote someone. She means tearing people down for laughs on tv shouldn’t be done. She thinks it is harmful and sends the wrong message to kids and teens. She is not saying private jokes and comments between friends should be banned.

  8. jess says:

Shes trying to be funny when she says these type of things but it just makes her sound like an idiot. Im noticing that people are starting to get sick of her aw shucks attitude. Not many people are buying it anymore.

    • Ice Maiden says:

Yup. I know she’s young, but she comes across as having the sense of humour of a 14 year old. Someone needs to tell her to put a lid on it.

  9. Div says:

She’s a good actress, but she’s said a shit load of stupid things that she gets a pass for and it kind of amazes me. I’m all for calling out body-shaming, but I distinctly remember her saying stuff about how she didn’t want a body like a 13 year old boy and how she wasn’t fat like Val Kilmer…not to mention the whole bit where she used the word dykey and her cat Chaz Bono trans joke. So yeah, her director saying she called Bale “Farman” doesn’t surprise me.

    • prayforthewild says:

Never realized she had such a bad case of foot-in-mouth disease, wow… A quick Google search reveals:

“In Hollywood, I’m obese. I’m considered a fat actress, I’m Val Kilmer in that one picture on the beach.”– HuffPost

“I’ve never met a cat where you assume first that it’s a boy. Because normally dogs are boys and cats are girls. But she has such a masculine energy that everybody always says ‘he’ and for the first week I thought it was a boy. I named her Oliver, she had a collar with Oliver. Oliver, Oliver, Oliver. And that’s just weird for a cat. So we call her Chaz Bono.” –Ellen

“I eat like a caveman. I’ll be the only actress that doesn’t have anorexia rumors.”–Entertainment Weekly

Lawrence was a total tomboy: field hockey, softball, basketball on an all-boys team. “I was so dykey,” says Lawrence. –Rolling Stone

“By the way, you are the most interesting person. I was in the dressing room going ‘I want weird quirks!’ …That’s so cool! He can’t step on the floor!” Jennifer Lawrence speaking directly to Jesse Eisenberg about his OCD on the Jay Leno show.

“That’s so cool! he can’t step on the floor!” O…M…G… She seems like kind of an jerk, then at other times says good things. IDK, she’s speaking against fat prejudice but then allowing herself free reign to say whatever she likes showing her own prejudice, ignorance, or insensitivity. She needs to slow down and think more before she speaks. Not everything said under the guise of a ‘joke’ is automatically acceptable.

  10. Maria says:

Yo, if you don’t want to be called fat, don’t call others fat.

    It’s very simple.

    • Spooks says:

I was fat and I never ever called someone fat. I don’t think I ever said anything insulting about someone’s looks. Because we don’t all do it. Some of us know how it feels.

I watch Fashion Police quite a lot and I never noticed they insult people’s looks. Bad fashion, yes, but not their bodies,

      • angie says:

I think Kelly Osbourne called Christina Aguilera fat several times (because Christina used to mock her or something…) and Joan Rivers made bad and unfunny jokes about Adele’s weight on the David Letterman show. I think she also called Christina and Mariah Carey fat… And these are only the examples I can remember off the top of my head.

      • lucy2 says:

I only watch FP during award seasons, and several times I’ve seen Joan make comments about people’s bodies.

    • JessMa says:

She did not call him fat. He is not fat. This was an inside joke on the movie.

  11. K says:

I take it you contacted Lawrence’s publicists to and they confirmed that Russell’s account of the conversation is factual, yes? Before you climbed on your high horse about remarks that may have occurred during a private conversation with a third party?

    • Migdalia says:

What are you talking about?? David Russell said this himself about a conversation he had with Jen…in person…at a Q&A with both Jennifer and Christian sitting right beside him. O_o.

      • V4Real says:

LOL! You don’t need anymore proof than that.

      • I Choose Me says:

I’m reading all of the posts from the Jen apologists with a bit of a smirk. Look, I don’t hate her I just find it supremely annoying how she gets a pass for stuff that we would blatantly call out another actress for just because we like her, we really, really like her. I’m kinda glad that people are noticing that she does not in fact sh*t diamonds out of a platinum assh*le.

Why yes, I had my bitch flakes today. Why do you ask?

  12. Kiddo says:

    Motormouth.

    • Sullivan says:

Yes, she’s a motormouth. Cute, sure, but I think she might be exhausting to be around for any great length of time. Of course, this might only be what she’s like when she’s **on.** Maybe she dials it down a bit when the cameras & mics are gone.

  13. ray says:

as a massive j-law fan in pretty sad by this. and im ashamed to admit that her whole shtick it wearing thin

  14. Feebee says:

Fatman instead of Batman, ha too good to let go. However given her recent statements, one she should have.

  15. Nanou says:

I may be wrong but seems like Bale is still filming the Ridley Scott’s Moses movie.

    • don't kill me i'm french says:

Yes,it’s right! On his IMDB,his fans were disappointed ,some thought he was going to come back in USA for GG whereas it ‘s filmed in Fuerteventura

      • Gail says:

Yes, Christian is definitely still filming Exodus. The shooting was supposed to be over by GG but because of bad weather, the schedule got extended. That’s the reason he missed the ceremony.

  16. msw says:

    Damnit.

  17. blue marie says:

It was a joke but it’s hypocritical, I like her although she does seem to have a problem with foot in mouth disease.

  18. Greata says:

Why does this girl keep on getting a pass….? She was rude in her GG acceptance speech. She at first acknowledged the work of the other nominees, then in an offhand way admitted she had not really seen all of the movies…then giggled as if it was inconsequential. She has now shat on The Hunger Games franchise…according to David O’Russel, the franchise is treating her like a slave. Specifcally this is what he said: ‘I’ll tell you what it is about that girl – talk about 12 years of slavery, that’s what the franchise is.’ Obviously, they had to have discussed this. This guy is totally obnoxious. I don’t care how talented a director he is…. The question also must be asked, is he trying to shade 12 Years A Slave as well ?

    • Lindy79 says:

IF, and that’s an IF she said that then both he and she need a slap.
She could however have been moaning about the HG to him (which I don’t agree with, she was only contracted to do 1, if she hated it that much she could have said no, or turned down X Men if she was that bloody tired), and he made up that little word play on his own, possibly trying to be funny or quippy and failing miserably.

      He’s an ass.

    • Leah says:

I hated David O Russels comments But you can’t blame her for David O Russells comments. She may have complained or she may been really exhausted and he saw that. But his comments likening it to slavery is all on him.

      • mimi says:

I agree. Russell was way out of line for making that ignorant and offensive “12 Years a Slave” remark regarding Jennifer. He was being an asshole as usual. It’s not Jennifer’s fault. He made the stupid remark, not her.

      • I Choose Me says:

Agree with that remark being all on him. I believe he’s THAT insensitive.

    • Algernon says:

The Hunger Games comment is inappropriate simply because comparing making movies to slavery, when people still suffer through it today, is utterly ridiculous. Please, have a little perspective. But they had a hard time getting Jennifer Lawrence signed onto American Hustle because of her (overcrowded) filming schedule, and he’s probably still annoyed he had to cut her part down because he could only have her on set for a few weeks, and not the full two and a half months he wanted. David O. Russell has never handled disappointment well.

    • Marianne says:

Oh good god. As for her speech, she was nervous. Her giggling is probably no different, then people who swear or stammer.

Secondly…SHE DID NOT MAKE THOSE COMMENTS ABOUT COMPARING HER WORK SCHEDULE TO SLAVERY. David O Russell did. Maybe he’s pissed that her hectic schedule takes time away from her doing more films away. Maybe she made a comment that she’s exhausted (and he ran with it). Who the eff knows. But you can’t place blame on her for that.

    • lisa2 says:

I felt the Shade to 12 because it was so obvious to me.

If Jennifer is over worked then STOP WORKING. She is in a position to say no. And there are many many actresses that would love the chance to get a tiny piece of what she is getting.

The whole pass regarding her slips or cute humor. She is the one that talked in detail during her interview how being called FAT is wrong. She hinted at Joan Rivers.. now Joan will say she says the things she does as humor. Funny a joke.

Is it different for Jennifer if she says the same as a “joke”

I just find it so interesting how the take on what celebrities say is twisted depending on who the celebrity is.

    • JessMa says:

She did not trash the hunger games. They don’t have to discuss anything. He knows first hand about her schedule because he did two films with her while she does hunger games. He is annoyed at having to share her. Don’t put that on her.

  19. sarah says:

I’m getting a little tired of her “aw shucks” personality.

  20. Corrie says:

She should watch it. She’s close to the tide turning and when it turns its hard to go back. Ask Kstew. Funny doesn’t last too long.

  21. Sarah says:

i think its more of the stupid word play batman, fatman.

She has reached the Peak, people now will try to find anything to make her look bad.

    • Kathycat says:

People don’t need to “find” anything as though making up stuff or blowing things out of proportion to make her look bad. She already has said a lot of hypocritical crap that she got a pass on because “omg she’s so down to earth and real unlike the fake, anorexic actresses of Hollywood”

      • V4Real says:

“People don’t need to “find” anything as though making up stuff or blowing things out of proportion to make her look bad.”

        +1
Yeah like saying I have seen all the movies nominated but oh not really but you know what I mean.

If that had been someone like Goop or Leo who said that people would be ripping them apart.

  22. Hello Kitty says:

I love you, Bedhead, but “chink in the [armour]” is a little antiquated and not used in polite conversation anymore.

    http://www.slate.com/articles/sports/the_good_word/2012/02/chink_in_the_armor_jeremy_lin_why_it_s_time_to_retire_the_phrase_for_good_.html

    • TSwise says:

Yes it is used in polite conversation, and no it’s not antiquated. The word chink literally means “fissure or crack”. A fissure or crack in one’s armor renders one vulnerable to attack in the spot that is exposed by the fissure. Political correctness is way out of hand, geez.

      • Hello Kitty says:

It’s cool to call gay people a “bundle of kindling” or say that a black person is acting “cheap and stingy”?

This is not a case of a white person getting offended for a racialized word. I’m Asian and “chink in the armour” is antiquated.

      • ScrewStewrat99 says:

No it isn’t cool to call gay people a “bundle of kindling” or to say a black person is acting “cheap and stingy”.

Saying “Chink in the armor” has nothing to do with Asians and the phrase isn’t used to put down Asians. There is no comparison between using this phrase and calling a gay person a fag. Nobody complains when Brits call cigarettes Fags because they aren’t being derogatory. Neither is saying “Chink in the armor.”, unless someone uses it to put down an Asian, which is not being done.

      • Alexis says:

Why can’t we actually listen to how people from the actual groups impacted feel about the use of an offensive term? It galls me how people are so dismissive of comments like @Hello Kitty’s. Maybe it’s important to listen how Asians feel about a commonly used phrase that contains an racial slur about their groups rather than shouting over them and saying that they are wrong.

      • ScrewStewrat99 says:

I understand chink can be an offensive term and used to put down Asians and I’m sorry it used that way and offends people. Racist people are a-holes.

I just think that comparing the phrase a chink in the armor to calling a gay person a fag is wrong and reaching. When you call a gay person a fag you are literally trying to insult, harm and bring a person down as if they are beneath you. When someone uses the phrase a chink in the armor they are not insulting, harming or trying to bring down the Asian race as if they are beneath them. Unless of course they are using the phrase in a racist joke or other harmful way.

The n word is a whole different story because it was a word made up just to insult and put down a race of people. Chink was not created to insult Asians. Assholes decided to use it to insult people like they decided to use fag as an insult to gays.

It’s all about context and I’m not going to stop using words in my vocabulary because some a-holes have given them other meanings and try to use the words for bad. I mean so many people use so many words to insult others that have nothing to do with their actual meaning. Any word can be made to be offensive and if we just stop using every word that offends somebody there will be nothing left to say.

    • frisbeejada says:

I like antiquated – it’s different/individual/quirky – and in this homogenized world something to be cherished..

  23. Mark says:

She said it about a guy so it doesn’t count guys calm down but like it’s said in the post she’s adored by the internet so she’ll get way more passes than Kirsten Stewart had. Also this site is apart of the fashion police crowd

    • Maya says:

I am sorry Mark but guys do have feelings as well – most guys are also insecure on their looks and if someone called them fat then they will be hurt.

I am a firm believe people should stop commenting on anyone’s looks be it man or woman. Each has their own reasons to look the way they do and they shouldn’t be judged based on that.

  24. Seán says:

I’m very much against fat shaming too but jokingly using the term ‘Fatman’ for someone who purposefully gained weight for a role or affectionately writing something like “The hobbits were fat, cheerful folk” is not the same as looking at someone on a red carpet and saying “They look so fat in that thing, that’s gross!” I think people have a tendency to contradict themselves but as a celebrity, everything you say is on record and can be used to call you out on it.

Lawrenc’s comment is nowhere near Cate Blanchett’s comment about Judy Garland. I caught her Golden Globes speech last night and at the end, she said something like “I’m glad my agent plied me with alcohol the way I’m sure Judy Garland was plied with barbiturates.” I felt that was pretty harsh considering the circumstances around her death.

    • gaggles says:

Yeah I agree with this. It’s different in this specific context. Bale willingly gained weight and I’m sure they’re friends. It was said privately to a grown man who probably has a sense of humour and knows it’s not meant in a mean-spirited way. It’s not that big a deal.

Note: I don’t like Jlaw’s cult of personality. I like her just fine, i HATE the way she’s treated by the media. As America’s sweetheart and she can do no wrong. It’s barfworthy.

      • V4Real says:

It might not have been meant in a mean spirited way but it’s the second time that people have heard JLaw call someone fat. It leads people to question her true character. She speaks out about fat shaming people but yet has no problem using the word herself. I’m sure Jen and Val Kilmer are not friends so what’s her excuse for calling him fat?

      • gaggles says:

@V4Real I’m kind of meh about it. I can’t stand the way people fawn all over her but I feel like people are looking for a reason for her to fail or tear her down here. And honestly I can’t blame them BECAUSE her fans so adoring and everyone excuses her for practically everything. And they so often tear so many other women down to build her up. On top of that people excuse the erasing of female characters that are older in order to write the role for Jlaw to be in the film. American Hustle and SLP are both like this. So no I’m not a fan who excuses her behavior.

I think in this particular instance it’s not that big a deal and it’s said between friends. Her val kilmer comment is mean. But I think she brought it up to distinguish the unfair standards for men and women. Should she be excused for it? No. Should be thrown into the fire for it? No. Should people stop calling her America’s Sweetheart and going on and on about how talented she is, beautiful, men want her, women want to be her crap? Yes, because that is sooo effing overblown and is in fact much more damaging then we realize.

In that this instance I wouldn’t’ say she’s necessarily hypocritical, she’s just not bright. But she definitely needs to choose her words wisely though.

    • meh says:

But her whole issue is the messaging about weight and bodies that comes out of Hollywood. And the whole premise of her joke is “kissing a fat person is not hot. This person was hot but then they got fat so they aren’t anymore.”

Or maybe a certain amount of “normal” fat is to be celebrated, but “really” fat people should be made to feel gross and unhot and the butt of the joke. And I’m not talking about Bale, I’m talking about all of her fans who happen to be fat.

  25. lily says:

To be honest, the only time I find Christian Bale attractive is when he plays Bruce Wayne in The Dark Knight.

    • Spooks says:

Really? I find him attractive always, even in American Hustle.

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

I agree Spooks…he has a charm that doesn’t go away.

      • Maya says:

His voice in Batman is divine..

      • balehead2012 says:

+ 1, Spooks! He does have a charm that is there in every movie, doesn’t he? And he looks especially good in Equilibrium, 3:10 to Yuma, Flowers of War, Public Enemies, The New world etc. etc.

    • I suggest “3:10 to Yuma.” I’m not a Western fan (I got dragged to it), but that movie was very well done and I loved Bale’s character. (And Russell Crowe’s, surprisingly.)

    • don't kill me i'm french says:

I saw American Hustle in streaming with my mum for some reasons
She tought he was very attractive because he or his character was warm, confident and funny. She loved him and Renner in the movie

    • littlestar says:

Same here, I’ve only ever found him attractive as Bruce Wayne.

  26. Roxanna says:

Slowly but surely the internet is going to rip her a new one, it’s probably going to slow and painful; painful enough to make me feel bad for her, even though I’m far from a fan. You know what they say love is fickle and it seems like the internet is getting over the honeymoon phase. I really hope that it doesn’t effect her or make her fell bad but she should get called out on things such as the whole hypocritical body shaming, she should know that’s also not ok.

Also can someone explain to me why she gets a pass for a lot of things? I would really like to know because a lot of people are putting her on a pedestal and when ever she does something that no one else would get a pass on they act like ostriches and put their heads in the sand.

    • Alexis says:

That’s why it’s better to come up neutral (like say, Amanda Seyfried or Rosario Dawson) or even with a vaguely b*tchy rep (like say, Natalie Portman or ScarJo) than to burst on the scene with a “we love her she can do no wrong” rep. You’re bound to disappoint in the context of the 24/7 media. Best of all is to develop a “she can do no wrong” rep over a long period of time and hang onto it when you’re at a phase of life and experienced with media attention in such a way that you can handle and maintain the rep (like Meryl Streep, Amy Poehler, Iman, Tina Fey, Tilda, Cate Blanchett, etc.).

This tends to only be a problem for women because the rocket to prominence is so fast for very young women because due to ageism, so many of the best roles are or can be given to very young women who aren’t necessarily experienced enough with fame not to make mistakes.

  27. Fan says:

She is sending a mixed signal. She hates dieting but makes fun of fat people.

  28. Penelope says:

Oh, big f****** deal. Talk about a non-story.

  29. olivia says:

Interesting how she really never gained back her “pneumonia” weight

    • prayforthewild says:

Apparently in Hollywood weight lost due to pneumonia remains as a ‘chronic’ condition. And not just for JLaw..

  30. Alina says:

So for Jennifer it is ok to call men fat? First Val Kilmer and now Christian Bale…

  31. Lucy says:

*clutches pearls* Ohmygod what an absolutely despicable human being she turned out to be!!!…Please.

    • V4Real says:

Not yet but she’s getting there.

    • TSwise says:

She is the one who set the standard for herself.

      • eatingpie says:

This. No one would truly make such a big deal about this, but she’s the one who said “Nay!” to body-shaming and calling others fat. But obviously, that only applies to others and not her.

    • mia girl says:

Yup. Or everyone will slowly decide that those traits they most liked in her (or any up and comer) are those they now hate.

I’m kind of scratching my head on the small tide that is turning on this girl, and really for no real concrete reason I can discern. If you didn’t like her to begin with, then I get it. But those who liked her and now are tired of her shtick… I don’t get. She works hard, doesn’t fame-ho herself around and doesn’t take herself too seriously.

If the worse that this girl can do is talk endlessly about body shaming and young girls’ body perceptions, I’m totally ok with that. I have a teenage daughter and in my mind there can never be enough talk about this.

Sure, she won an award that someone else might have deserved more, but, she isn’t be the first and won’t be last. That is more the fault of those who nominated and voted for her.

I know we can all be a fickle bunch of gossip followers, but I’m surprised by some of the comments about JLaw in recent days. Oh well.

      • Ctkat1 says:

@ Mia Girl: I totally agree. It’s disheartening that people are now “turning” on her for not doing anything especially egregious. Neither of these two recent controversies ( Fatman and the 12 years a slave comment) actually came from her, they came from David O. Russell. She might have joked about Fatman, but she didn’t make it a public thing, and she didn’t compare her HG contract to slavery.
People are mad that she won the Golden Globe, but she didn’t vote for the award. She also didn’t campaign this year- she’s been completely absent from all of the brunches, receptions, Q&As and screenings this year. I don’t really want to see the tide turn on this girl, especially for things like this.

  32. Marianne says:

I think its a tad different, mainly because he packed on the pounds for a role (on purpose). I dont think Christian Bale is cowering in a corner somewhere. Whereas the media can be really harsh on starlets. And they are purposefully being cruel about it.

  33. Cro-girl says:

She was a joking. Media sources doing a whole lot of weight commenting and body snark and fat shaming is not a joke.

  34. WendyNerd says:

Yeah, I read that and I was like, “Sh-t! The bloom has gone off the JLaw rose!” Well, it was bound to happen. That was really f—ing stupid of her to say. The hypocrisy bells went off in my head. I think maybe she thought it was okay since he was INTENTIONALLY big; but no, JLaw, it really, really is not. Bale might have been that way temporarily for a role, but there are a lot of American men out there with that exact body type. Just because you’re talking about a guy doesn’t mean you’re not body-shaming. I’m sure Bale wasn’t bothered by it, but there are men who look like that who could feel hurt. Kind of puts the whole body-image thing in a crappy light. Jennifer, when it comes to body image and anti-fat shaming, if you want to talk the talk, you’d better…. talk the talk.

    Seriously. That was f—ing bad.

    • Alexis says:

It was insensitive and she should probably apologize. It’s not talked about and they receive less external pressure from others and in the media, but guys ARE sensitive about their body images. And they’re only getting more sensitive about it because media/society is moving towards putting more pressure on men. I think the best way to move toward parity is to put less pressure on women, but unfortunately in body image the move toward parity is coming in the form of same amount of pressure on women and more for men. It was a forgivable mistake, but a mistake nonetheless. While people are still far from “hating” JLaw (her fans are spreading this persecution meme, I’m like wha?), the bloom is off the rose is an eloquent way of putting it.

I still like the concept of JLaw, though. She’s getting roles and acclaim for her work and not so much for her looks. She’s like a young Sandra Bullock or Julia Roberts insofar as clearly there are many prettier women in Hollywood, and so she gets the roles mostly because she’s a good actor. They’re all basically slightly above average-looking people with access to good makeup, an open sched for diet and exercise ahn darn good acting chops. I like that because that’s actually the standard for male actors. So many young female actors clearly get work purely on the basis of their looks. Rarely is there an overlap of most beautiful young actress and really good acting chops; honestly, only Winona in the 90’s comes to mind. JLaw needs to chill on trying to seem relatable. She has the fundamentals such that many women will relate to her anyway. And even the weight stuff. Not going full Hollywood with her size over time will make a bigger statement than her dumb bunny comments on weight. ScarJo has quietly done this for a decade and honestly, I’m much more impressed by ScarJo because of this track record. Also the weight stuff is kinda weirdly self-important, too. She’s not the first female actor not to be a skeleton, and honestly, she’s a slim blonde in really good shape, hardly groundbreaking, so chill out already.

  35. Kim says:

To be fair, this is hearsay.

  36. Jordan says:

Since he gained weight for the role, I don’t think there is anything wrong with some good natured teasing between friends. Now if she said it to Jonah Hill, that would be different.

  37. shabboo says:

I’m probably gonna get slammed for this but some I’m not against fat shaming, being fat is unhealthy and we shouldn’t pussy foot around it so we dont hurt peoples feelings.

I’m not saying I go round point at fat people calling them names, but I’m not gonna pretend that it’s not a problem.

    • meh says:

A high weight itself is actually not inherently unhealthy, just as a very low weight is not inherently unhealthy. You cannot tell the state of a person’s health by their size.

  38. Elle Kaye says:

Why are some women so snarky to each other? You call her behavior an “act”, or her “schtick” and that you are tiring of it. Well, did you ever stop and think that this is just who she is…a young, gregarious woman who is enjoying her life?? Oh, heaven forbid it! Some women are having none of it. You gave her ample time to have her fun, now she has to go back in her box until you decide how she should behave for the next go-round.

Why does it bother you? You think it isn’t genuine? It is too “cutesy?” But Meryl Streep and Sandra Bullock can say whatever they please. They can photo bomb, make hilarious comments, and people take these comments for how they are meant, humorous comments coming from very funny women. Why can’t Ms. Lawrence be viewed the same way? Why do you feel the need to knock her down a peg or two?

She does nothing harmful that I can see, yet she is bashed. I will never understand that mentality. You will only allow other women to get so far up before you drag them back down. Such a shame.

  39. Chloe says:

I’m not a huge fan of J-Law, but I’ve enjoyed her in some movies and think she does have some acting talent. I got her whole fat-shaming comments made to the fact that she was never really fat, like many other actresses, but in Hollywood she was being called fat and told to loose weight. When Tina Fey made the Matthew M joke about him loosing 40 lbs for DBC it defiantly shows that it’s a big problem in Hollywood and it scares me how many actresses have gone to extremes to meet the appropriate weight. As for the “Fatman” comment apparently it was a joke on the set that Bale started, so I’m not hating on her for repeating it, but it does make a point that both of the women in AH were thin and several of the male characters were not, it seems to be the standard in Hollywood, the men may not be in the perfect weight category but women have to be, pretty sad.

  40. fruitloops says:

I am surprised by the number of commenters using the ‘she was just joking’ excuse, since it is what bullies usually use as an excuse for every mean thing they say to their victim when called out for it.

    • Jordan says:

True fruitloop, but real bullies aren’t “friends” with the people they are bullying. This was teasing between friends, nothing more. Would it be bullying bald people if she made fun of his atrocious comb over?

      • balehead2012 says:

@Jordan, that comb over was hilarious, not atrocious 😀 And the opening scene of the movie, when he is ‘arranging’ his hair to hide his baldness … LOL!
I agree, I think this was a joke between them (it was Bale who told us about the Batman-Fatman joke of the crew) and it wasn’t meant to hurt anyone, but people became really sensitive to these kind of remarks, so there will be many persons who will shade her for it. I’d hate to be a celebrity and have to watch every word that comes out of my mouth!
Anyway, she got to make out with him, regardless of the big belly and the comb over, so if I’m gonna hate her for sth., it will be for that 😀

  41. Ginger says:

Any one is LUCKY to make out with him fat or not IMO. But the stuff that comes out of Jennifer’s mouth… She can be so funny. I can see her saying this. However I agree it may be somewhat hypocritical though I’m sure it wasn’t intended to be mean.

  42. Jay says:

I wouldn’t say she’s almost universally adored. Most gay, trans, plus size and non-white women I’ve talked to don’t have the time of day for her.
